Image

In Season 1 of Apple TV’s sci-fi series, Foundation, one of the key characters was revealed to be a robot - a secret that has been kept for thousands of years. Only the rulers of the Galactic Empire, Brother Dawn, Brother Day, and Brother Dusk, know of the robot’s true nature.

In the first episode of Season 3, Demerzel, played by Laura Birn, welcomes Zephyr Vorellis (Rebecca Ineson) to the Imperial Palace on Trantor. ‘Foundation’: Lee Pace Breaks Down Shocking Episode 3 Ending & Day’s Devastating Loss
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Foundation Season 3 Episode 3, “When a Book Finds You.”] Lee Pace‘s Brother Day can’t seem to catch a break in Foundation Season 3. His Cleonic Dynasty is going to end in months, but he couldn’t really care less about that. No, this “goblin” version of the emperor — Pace’s word — is more devastated by the fact that his courtesan (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing) was just ripped from his life. It’s an intimate, human moment in such a sprawling sci-fi epic. Episode 3’s ending is a turning point for Day. He just set his plan to abandon his empirical duties into motion. He’ll accompany Song (Wong-Loi-Sing) back to her home in the Mycogen sector. Everything’s going right: The Claviger commander (Ibraheem Toure) commits to helping them escape from underneath advisor Demerzel’s (Laura Birn) watchful eye. But when Day lets his lover in on the Empire’s biggest secret — that Demerzel is ...

‘Foundation’ Season 3 Episode 3 Review and Ending Explained: Demerzel Breaks Her Centuries-Old Code
Image
Apple TV+’s Foundation season 3 continues to be one of the most epic sci-fi adaptations on the small screen. Episode 3, titled When A Book Finds You, is another emotionally charged chapter in this centuries-spanning saga. This episode is a turning point for major characters like Brother Dawn, The Mule, Demerzel, and Gaal Dornick in this galactic chess game.

The biggest punch of this Foundation season 3 episode comes from Demerzel, who was struggling with an existential crisis due to the Prime Radiant’s predictions. In this episode, she lets Song, Brother Day’s consort, live, even though she’s loyal to a forbidden religion. This action raises questions about her faith and autonomy.

Also, the episode’s title refers to a banned manuscript that viewers were introduced to in the first episode of season 1 itself- Kalle’s Ninth Proof of Folding. This book has now triggered a secret alliance between Gaal...

New Season of Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Show Based on Isaac Asimov’s Book Opens With 100% Rt Score
Image
Apple TV+’s Foundation season 3 has begun with a bang- it has bagged a perfect critic score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Early reviews are praising it as an epic and cerebral space odyssey. Season 1 had a 72% score while season 2 reached a flawless 100% perfect critic rating. This indicates that the show has perfected the art of maintaining the same quality as before.

Based on Isaac Asimov’s sci-fi books of the same name, the show gradually evolved from an ambitious adaptation to one that justifies the author’s vision. Throughout seasons 1 and 2, the creators added new characters and changed many more to add depth and nuance to the narrative. Season 3 is all set to take it up a notch with grand spectacles and an uneasy alliance between the Empire and the Foundation. But that’s just the beginning, as the buzz is only building.

Foundation: Season 3

Streaming on: Apple TV+

As a certain disgraced boxer once declared, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.” For Jared Harris’ Hari Seldon, who foresaw the demise of a galactic civilisation and set in motion a plan to temper the fallout, that punch comes in the form of the Mule. A maniacal telepath who can bend enemies to his whim with a thought, the Mule crashes into Foundation’s third season as an agent of absolute chaos, single-handedly laying waste to an entire armada in the season’s show-stopping opener.

Swivel-eyed and openly homicidal, he’s an unusually traditional villain for a decidedly non-traditional show. Upon its arrival in 2021, Apple TV+’s Foundation established itself as byzantine, uncompromising and sometimes disorientatingly dense series that made little allowance for dwindling attention spans. Building on and expanding Isaac Asimov’s series of millennia-spanning novels, it...

A panda travels to Africa to save his kidnapped dragon bestie in this bland, animated attempt to imitate some distinguished predecessors

Here is an animated feature, financed by production companies spanning the European Union, about a panda and his dragon best friend having adventures in Africa; it is, to be honest, sensationally derivative and not on the same level as Pixar, Disney or even Dreamworks films at their best. Even those studios are very derivative these days, quite inferior to their best from just a few years back. But it doesn’t really matter because most kids are fantastically uncritical viewers, bless them, so this ought to earn back in receipts the equivalent of its tax exemptions at least.

Judging by the smooth rendering and thoughtful character design, the film-makers probably spent a fair few euros pulling it together, but it comes perilously close to competitors’ intellectual property, especially The Lion King...

Foundation Season 3: Confirmation, Cast, Story & Everything We Know
Image
Foundation, Apple TV+'s adaptation of the Isaac Asimov novel series, first aired in 2021, with two seasons currently complete and a third on the way. The first season of Foundation received mixed-to-positive reviews, with praise going to the set design and acting of both Jared Harris, as protagonist Hari Seldon, and Lee Pace as the villain Brother Day, one of a series of genetic clones that rules the Galactic Empire. Season 1 picked up two Primetime Emmy nominations and won two Visual Effects Society Awards and that led to a second season, which premiered in 2023.

The books that the series is based on took the form of a trilogy, published from 1951 to 1953, which was followed by two more books in 1982 and 1986, and prequel novels written in 1988 and 1993. The original trilogy on which the Apple TV+ show is based was originally collected as short stories and novellas and is based on The...

‘Really Love’ Review: A D.C. Couple Appreciate – and Create – Black Art
Image
Isaiah (Kofi Siriboe) and Stevie (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing) don’t meet cute in “Really Love.” They meet with understated beauty, at a time in their lives when ardor and connection will be tested by the dreams each has harbored for much of their lives. He’s a talented painter watching other art school classmates get representation and gallery shows. She’s in the last year of law school and sure to be courted by elite firms.

For her debut feature, director Angel Kristi Williams doesn’t make it easy on her protagonists. And her deliberateness of vision, trust in story and clear-eyed empathy suggest she’s a talent to keep track of. For their restrained yet smoldering performances, the two lead actors received a special jury acting prize at the 2020 SXSW film festival.

Stevie and Isaiah first connect at a gallery opening in front of a large painting of a woman.

The Duo Behind Really Love Talks Bringing Black Romance Back to Mainstream
Image
In September of 2020, I came across a tweet from Felicia Pride about the premiere of her feature film, a romantic drama entitled Really Love. At the time, I'd known Pride for her short film Tender about two women having an intimate morning after a one night stand. What stopped me during this aimless social media scroll in particular, was the feature's poster. Actor Kofi Siriboe - who has actually taken my breath away in real life - was pictured embracing the utterly stunning Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing, whom I recognized from Mara Brock Akil's Love Is. I was immediately smitten.

Pride wrote, "So proud that Really Love is premiering at AFI Fest's Special Presentations. Filmmaking is not for the faint of heart. And this baby was determined to teach us all the things and challenge us like firstborns do. Grateful to have learned a different kind of perseverance and steadfastness to a mission bigger than you.

AFI Fest To Close With World Premiere Of Errol Morris’ ‘My Psychedelic Love Story’
Image
The 34th annual AFI Fest said Monday that Showtime’s Errol Morris-directed documentary My Psychedelic Love Story will close the festival next month.

The movie follows LSD high priest Timothy Leary and how he became a narc in 1974 and abandoned the millions he urged to turn on, tune in and drop out. Was his “perfect love” Joanna Harcourt-Smith a government pawn, as suggested by Allen Ginsberg? Morris and Harcourt-Smith reexamine the Leary saga: his period of exile, reimprisonment and subsequent cooperation with the authorities.

The docu is inspired by Harcourt-Smith’s memoir Tripping the Bardo With Timothy Leary: My Psychedelic Love Story.

In addition, AFI today unveiled the festival’s Special Presentations section offering an array of non-fiction and fiction features including the world debuts of Kelly Oxford’s comedy-drama Pink Skies Ahead, Matt Tyrnauer’s Showtime docu series The Reagans, and Angel Kristi Williams’ drama Really Love. SXSW Winners: Despite Cancellation, Festival Announces Grand Jury Prizes
Janet Pierson
Normally, the SXSW Film Festival award winners are handed out during a lively ceremony at the end of the first weekend, but this year required some improvisation. When the SXSW became the first major film event to cancel in the face of global pandemic, it was unclear what would happen to the hundreds of films and filmmakers primed for the late March festivities.

While many filmmakers were left struggling to figure out their next moves, the festival’s leadership opted to hand out awards to the films set to premiere at the festival, with the juries announced weeks earlier. SXSW Director of Film Janet Pierson and her team made the decision to “continue and expand to all the juried competitions, if the majority of the filmmakers opted in and juries were available.”

Before Sundance gets underway, SXSW has unveiled the first wave of their film lineup. This year’s slate includes Judd Apatow’s Pete Davidson-led comedy The King of Staten Island, a new Spike Jonze-directed Beastie Boys documentary, an intriguing new film by Amy Seimetz, and more.

There’s also The Lovebirds, directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) and starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, whose comedic stylings coalesce astoundingly well in the first trailer. The duo play Leilani and Jibran, a couple who are accidentally embroiled in a murder mystery as a man claiming to be a cop commits murder with their car and leaves them with the evidence.

Ahead of a release on April 3, see the trailer below, followed by the SXSW 2020 lineup.

Love Is (2016)
TV Review: ‘Love Is….’
Love Is (2016)
Romantic comedies are surprisingly rare on television. Recently, if a show could at all be described as romantic and/or a comedy, there’s usually been a biting twist as if the show wanted to distance itself from any trace of saccharine storytelling. Shows like FX’s “You’re The Worst,” HBO’s “Insecure,” and Netflix’s recently concluded “Love” hinge on romance, but funnel it all through a purposefully cynical, acidic point of view.

“Love Is…” is not that kind of TV rom-com. Based on the real life relationship of creator Mara Brock Akil (“Being Mary Jane”) and executive producer Salim Akil (“Black Lightning”), “Love Is” embraces a far more traditionally swoony kind of romance, even down to the “When Harry Met Sally” style framing device of 2027 Nuri (Wendy Davis) and Yasir (Clarke Peters) telling the story of their 30 year romance straight to camera.

Their love story begins in...
