And Mrs Review: Marrying a Dead Person is Real but Not Real Funny
Image
The idea for And Mrs feels like it was hatched after somebody stumbled upon the word necrogamy during a Wikipedia search. Necrogamy is a marriage in which one of the engaged is dead and was originally intended to provide financial support for war widows. First-time feature director Daniel Reisinger aims to use necrogamy as a unique way of exploring the idea of overcoming grief, with Aisling Bea playing a Londoner who decides to proceed with her wedding despite the untimely death of her fianc (Colin Hanks).

But Reisinger hides what little he has to say about dealing with such heartbreak behind the safe spaces of rom-com conventions and Melissa Bubnics anything-for-a-laugh script. While no one was expecting Harold and Maude-levels of risk and reward, Reisingers occasionally amusing film takes a well-meaning idea and drowns it in strained comedy, removing too much of the real-life messiness from it.

Rom-Com Clichs...

Colin Hanks in The Good Guys (2010)
‘You laugh the hardest in grief’: And Mrs, the cathartic romcom about marrying your dead fiance
Colin Hanks in The Good Guys (2010)
Finding the funny side of bereavement may be taboo, but Colin Hanks and director Daniel Reisinger hope their new film starring Aisling Bea will help to change that

Shortly after Daniel Reisinger’s mum died, the director found himself howling with laughter. “It was the shittest week of my life,” he explains, over a video call from his native Australia. “But I’ve also never laughed harder. We were singing Bette Midler’s The Rose around Mum’s bed, and none of us can hold a tune to save our lives, but we were belting it out and all crying our eyes out and laughing.”

Finding the funny side of grief may still be considered taboo by some, but Reisinger is hoping to change that with his new film, And Mrs. It stars Aisling Bea and Colin Hanks as Gemma and Nathan, a betrothed couple whose big day is thwarted...

“Cinema is in a very bad way,” says Brian Cox, on eve of production of directorial debut ‘Glenrothan’
Image
“Cinema is in a very bad way – I think it’s lost its place,” Brian Cox told the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) during a surprise appearance in the festival’s industry programme.

“I think it has lost its place, partly because of the grandiose element between Marvel and DC and all of that, and it’s beginning to implode. You’re losing the plot, I think. Television has really stolen the march, when you get incredible things like Ripley, like Succession,” said Cox.

“In terms of the work,” continued the Succession star, referencing films in the vein of Deadpool & Wolverine,...

Brian Cox Says Cinema Is in “a Very Bad Way,” Cites Marvel, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’: “It’s Become Party Time”
Image
Brian Cox thinks cinema is “in a very bad way,” with the Marvel and DC Universes partly to blame.

The legendary actor of stage and screen — who most recently garnered critical acclaim for his award-winning role in HBO’s Succession — spoke at an Edinburgh International Film Festival panel on Saturday. When asked about the recent critical success of globally popular TV shows, Cox cited the latest MCU installment Deadpool & Wolverine as a great example of cinematic “party time.”

“What’s happened is that television is doing what cinema used to do,” Cox told the audience of television’s originality. “I think cinema is in a very bad way. I think it’s lost its place because of, partly, the grandiose element between Marvel, DC and all of that. And I think it’s beginning to implode, actually. You’re kind of losing the plot.”

He discussed Ryan Reynolds and...

How Director Daniel Reisinger Enlisted Billie Lourd, Colin Hanks for Bittersweet Rom-Com ‘And Mrs’
Image
What do Billie Lourd, Colin Hanks, and Bette Midler have in common? The answer: They were all rather taken with Daniel Reisinger.

The charismatic Australian director (Sideswiped, Players) spoke to The Hollywood Reporter on just how he landed such an impressive cast for what is a relatively niche British rom-com. And Mrs is one of Edinburgh Film Festival‘s world premieres in its out of competition category this year.

To describe this film, penned by Melissa Bubnic, as a rom-com feels misleading; its protagonist Gemma, played by Irish actress Aisling Bea, is left bereft and blindsided when her fiancé Nathan (Hanks) drops dead months before their wedding. In a bizarre but incredibly endearing effort to honor their love and distract herself from her own grief, she sets about trying to posthumously marry him.

Lourd, the daughter of Star Wars legend Carrie Fisher, is Nathan’s zany and heavily pregnant sister Audrey,...

“Rebooting” Edinburgh: Director Paul Ridd Hopes to Take Film Festival to the Big Leagues
Image
It’s that time of the year again: Edinburgh has come alive.

With three different festivals taking over the Scottish capital for the month of August (Film, TV and, of course, the Fringe), the city is bursting at the seams with creativity.

That’s what the 77th Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) director Paul Ridd hopes, anyway. In his words, he’s worked to reboot this year’s event and embrace “the spirit of discovery” in an impressive slate of projects premiering, around half of them world premieres. With Nora Fingscheidt’s The Outrun starring Saoirse Ronan, Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus and the European premiere of Colman Domingo film Sing Sing among the lineup, Ridd has shown a commitment to take the Eiff to a league above.

“The long-term plan for me would be to [look at] the models of the likes of Sundance and Telluride,” Ridd tells The Hollywood Reporter.

And Mrs | Trailer released for Aisling Bea comedy drama
Aisling Bea at an event for EE British Academy Film Awards (2020)
Comedian and actor Aisling Bea headlines the dark comedy drama film And Mrs, out in September. Here’s a trailer:

Since beginning her career as a stand-up comedian, Aisling Bea has made her mark on screens big and small. She put in a memorable performance as a contestant on series five of Taskmaster, and since 2021 she has written and starred in her own superb sitcom This Way Up, which is available to stream on Channel 4. She also found success in America, starring opposite Paul Rudd in sci-fi comedy drama Living With Yourself.

Bea is next set to headline the comedy drama film And Mrs, about a woman whose husband-to-be dies just before their wedding day. The synopsis, if you’d prefer a more official description, reads as follows:

A hilarious and heartfelt comedy drama about Gemma, a woman living in London whose American fiancé, Nathan, dies shortly before their wedding day.

Official Trailer for RomCom 'And Mrs' - A Wedding Without a Groom
Image
"That is the promise that I made!" Vertigo Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for an amusing romantic comedy film called And Mrs, from director Daniel Reisinger. Set for a UK release this fall after premiering at the 2024 Edinburgh Film Festival coming up in August (though no US release set yet). When a reluctant bride-to-be's fiance drops dead, she insists on marrying him anyway - vowing to overcome public opinion, the law of the land, and her loved one's objections. Apparently marrying someone posthumously is actually allowed in France, but not in the UK. Aisling Bea stars as Gemma, joined by Colin Hanks, Billie Lourd, Susan Wokoma, Harriet Walter, and Elizabeth McGovern. The director explains: "Gemma's quest to marry Nathan is about a good old-fashioned forever love - one that's beyond swiping right or left. And Mrs lets you laugh about love and grief like touchstone films, The Big Chill...
