You don’t pull the plug on a show with a 93% rating while it’s still climbing the charts, but that’s exactly what HBO Max did with Josh Holloway’s Duster. Fans were ecstatic to see the actor return on screen after 7 long years in a role that looked tailor-made for him. But just as it wrapped up its Season 1 finale on a massive cliffhanger, to say the least, it was axed. And guess what, despite this new update, Duster kept showing up on HBO’s Top 10 lists in more than 20 countries (via Flix Patrol).
We’re talking the US, Australia, France, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, to name a few. While these countries might not agree on much, apparently, all agreed Duster was worth watching. While the cancellation is a major blow for all die-hard fans, one question remains on everyone’s mind: why kill a show just as it’s gaining momentum?...

J.J. Abrams teamed up once again with Loststar Josh Hollowayto bring a new kind of detective story to HBO. Dusterstarred Holloway and Rachel Hilson in the 1970s crime thriller. Holloway plays Jim, a getaway driver who ends up crossing paths with Nina (Hilson), an FBI detective on a mission. The dynamic between Hilson and Holloway led to plenty of fun interactions and exciting scenes between the two actors for fans to explore. Yet despite the positive response to the series, it wasn't enough to save the show. Still, it is ranking high in the HBO charts and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%.
Duster has ranked in the Top 10 for the last week, despite the news. But even that wasn't enough to save the show. While the series remained in the streaming platform's Top 10, that wasn't going to grant it a Season 2. The series didn't reach the Nielsen Top 10 for...

Josh Holloway's distinctive red Plymouth has driven its last joyride. "Duster," the 1970s-set series by creators J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan focusing on getaway driver Jim Ellis caught up in a crime syndicate and FBI agent Nina Hayes (Rachel Hilson) tasked with taking it down, was officially canceled by HBO Max before the dust had even settled on last week's season finale. The show marked a long-awaited reunion between Holloway and Abrams, both of whom worked together on the hit ABC series "Lost," as well as Abrams' first significant project since "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" hit theaters in 2019. Incredibly enough, it also represented the only actual title to come to fruition from Abrams' and his production company Bad Robot's lucrative first-look deal with HBO announced back in 2020. The high-profile casualties in that deal included the likes of "The Shining" spin-off "Overlook," "Justice League Dark," and the wildly expensive "Demimonde.

You’re probably thinking, “Another article about cancellations? We Get It.”
And hey, you’d be justified in feeling that way. However, a series like Duster, one that is refreshing, interesting, and a hell of a lot more entertaining than many other series currently airing, deserves a eulogy article.
Duster wasn’t going to win any awards, but it was a pretty perfect summer series that deserved a lot more than the hand it was dealt.

In case you didn’t hear the news, Duster was cancelled after one season on Max (now HBO Max — again). It brings to an end an innovative and fun adventure that stood out amongst the lackluster summer fare that’s been rolled out this summer.
You may not be aware, but behind the scenes, Duster languished for a long time after being given a straight-to-series green light in 2020.

The crime drama Duster is officially done at HBO Max. Even though the show got strong reviews and was liked by many viewers, it just didn’t attract a big enough audience to stick around.
According to Entertainment Weekly, HBO Max decided not to bring the show back for a second season. It was one of the platform’s original series and the first reunion in 15 years for Lost star Josh Holloway and creator J.J. Abrams.
In a statement shared with EW, HBO Max said, “While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a second season of Duster, we are so grateful to have had the chance to work with the amazingly talented co-creators J.J. Fans of Lost star Josh Holloway’s throwback 70s crime drama on HBO Max have seen Duster get dusted, as the show will not be returning for a second season. According to Variety, the show’s season finale, which aired less than a week ago, will now stand as the series final. Considering the series seemed to be pulling in some strong reviews, it seems that, like so many other shows, there are no second chances to make a big viewership impression on streaming platforms.
Considering Duster is one of the only projects created and produced by J.J. Abrams since his renewed deal with Warner Bros. back in December, it does not bode well for his collaboration going forward. The series was co-created by Latoya Morgan, and alongside Holloway costarred Rachel Hilson. In a statement, HBO Max said:

The latest show from J.J. Abrams going to be a one-and-done series, despite its high praise from critics and fans.
Per Deadline, the new series Duster has been canceled after one season on HBO Max. The unfortunate update comes one week after the show's freshman season wrapped up its run. During its short run, the series drew high marks from critics with a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 92%. Its audience score was also strong at 83%, leaving the majority of viewers satisfied.
However, streaming numbers for Duster were not overly impressive. The series managed to hang in the daily Top 10 on HBO Max, but it has not ranked in the Nielsen Top 10 ratings for streaming originals. The show only barely made Luminate's list of Top 50 streaming originals during its fourth week by hitting #50. Duster also failed to gain a lot of traction on social media. Even though it has a 92% Tomatometer score and 83% Popcornmeter score, HBO Max has canceled the crime thriller series Duster less than a week after the season 1 finale was released on July 3. The series, which was first ordered in April 2020, reunited Josh Holloway and J.J. Abrams after they both previously worked on Lost.

It’s one and done for Duster, as it becomes the first show canceled in the new HBO Max era for the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service. While the cancellation isn’t all that surprising, it is disappointing for those who had just caught the season 1 finale last week!
Duster starred Josh Holloway, reuniting him with Lost co-creator and EP J.J. Abrams, who was one of the co-creators for this series. The writing was arguably on the wall for this series even before the show debuted on the streaming platform.

Deadline reports that while Duster came from some big names, it didn’t get the attention and viewership that it needed. That being said, it was performing well with both critics and audiences, but even if the viewership was good, the series would have been difficult to save.

HBO Max has canceled its 1970s-set action-comedy series Duster after one season.

Exclusive: After a five-year build-up, it was a short run for Bad Robot’s 1970s crime drama Duster as HBO Max is not proceeding with a second season of the series from J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan. The news comes less than a week after the Season 1 finale debuted on the platform.

This post contains spoiler from the Duster season finale on Max.
We’ve arrived at the season finale of Duster on Max. As we left off last week, it was clear the house of lies built by Nina (Rachel Hilson) and Jim (Josh Holloway) as they investigate Saxton (Keith David) had come crashing down. But could they find a way to survive? That’s the question we had to answer during this week’s finale, “66 Reno Split.” Let’s dive in and see how it turned out.
We open this week by flashing back to South Philly in 1954. There, Saxton is threatening Virgil Hayes (Kenneth Mosely). Seems Virgil isn’t keeping up his end of the numbers-running racket. Young Nina watches the exchange. It’s not long before her father ends up dead, providing the fuel that’s led to her choice of career and current situation.
Present day Nina wakes,...

There’s no time for a deep breath in Duster’s explosive episode 8, the kind of finale that doesn’t knock on your door but breaks it down with a flamethrower. In this jaw-gritting, gun-smoke-filled final act, we finally learn who Xavier is, Saxton meets a Shakespearean end trying to save his son, Nina’s quest for justice reaches an agonizing crescendo, and Jim (Josh Holloway) stumbles upon a truth so seismic it may just tip the political balance of an entire nation.
Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? All of them get answered and then swiftly replaced with even thornier questions. Nina, once shackled and sedated by betrayal, survives an assassination attempt by a rogue agent, only to uncover that the conspiracy she’s chasing is far from over. Saxton does not die as the villain he spent years becoming, but as a father who sacrifices everything for his child.

Max's Duster has not yet been renewed for a Season 2, but its intense Season 1 finale makes it clear that there's plenty more story to tell, something one of the show's main stars agrees with. The show follows Josh Holloway's Jim Ellis, a newly turned informant, and Rachel Hilson's FBI Agent Nina Hayes, as the two work to take down Keith David's Ezra Saxton and his crime empire.
Duster star Benjamin Charles Watson sat down with The Direct to discuss his character Royce Saxon's journey throughout Season 1 and explain what he'd like to explore with his character if the story continues.
Watson revealed that if a Season 2 happens, "It's gonna be really, really different, and it's gonna be really fascinating and interesting." He noted to The Direct how he'd "really want to see if Royce has the ability to step into his father's shoes." The actor wants to...

[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for the Duster Season 1 finale.] The first season of Duster has come to a bittersweet end. The finale sees the culmination of this season’s events (and leaves a few dangling threads for a potential Season 2 to pull from). The episode begins with young Nina back in Philadelphia in 1954 at the moment when she first lays eyes on Ezra Saxton (Keith David) as he gives her father a tongue-lashing at his convenience store, and she accidentally alerts them to her presence. In the present day, Nina (Rachel Hilson) awakes in custody, with Billy (Evan Jones) torturing her for information about who else she’s been working with besides Jim Ellis (Josh Holloway). It doesn’t take long for Jim to realize what has happened to her. After returning his daughter Luna to Izzy’s (Camille Guaty) house, her doctor boyfriend mentions meeting Billy at the hospital and the fact that he spoke...

In just a very short time, Josh Holloway’s Duster has received a lot of fan appreciation. While viewers loved him as Jim Ellis, Rachel Hilson is also not far behind with her fiercely powerful role as FBI agent Nina Hayes. Just fresh out of Quantico, she’s all set to bring down crime boss Saxton, making her much more than just a supporting character.
Even before she stepped into this role, Hilson already had an impressive resume over the years, with roles in several other popular shows. From crime to heartfelt rom-coms, she has dabbled in every field. While Duster might be her biggest role to date, these other shows also deserve their due credit. So, let’s look at the five standout shows that you should definitely watch if you loved seeing her as Nina in Duster.

“You can’t unring a bell,” they say, and in Duster episode 7, that bell is ringing loud and clear, echoing all the way from Las Vegas to the White House. After six episodes of cryptic glances, coded messages, and enough shadowy deals to fill a spy novel, we finally crack the suitcase that’s been dangling like a carrot on a stick. They say fortune favors the bold, but in Duster’s Episode 6, fortune seems to be playing hide-and-seek with Nina Hayes. I swear, this episode had me gripping my screen like a lifeline in a storm: equal parts admiration and edge-of-seat anxiety.
But just when I was ready to say ‘smooth sailing’ after Duster’s Episode 5, today’s one threw a wrench in the works, and boy, did it get spicy. Nina, with a confidence as fierce as a wildfire and nerves of steel, plunges headfirst into a world where every smile could be a loaded gun. Jim Ellis’ (Josh Holloway) warnings echo in my head: one wrong word, and it’s curtains for her. Yet here she stands, a one-woman wrecking ball amid a corrupt maze where politicians and gangsters dance a dangerous tango.

[Warning: The following post contains spoilers for Duster Episode 6.] Things get pretty hairy for Nina (Rachel Hilson) and Jim (Josh Holloway) in this week’s edition of Duster… but things also end on a somewhat swoony note. Like Episode 2 (which was also directed by Steph Green), this segment begins with the ending, as the two have to work together to survive a shootout. The story then goes back in time to reveal how they’ve gotten there. The day of the big meeting with the Russians, Nina is almost found out when Agent Grant (Dan Tracy) shows up to the hotel where Nina is waiting for Saxton (Keith David). Billy (Evan Jones) rightly clocks her as duplicitous, and while Royce (Benjamin Charles Watson) is too busy flirting to notice, Billy doesn’t let it go. We ended last week with Nina (Rachel Hilson) and Jim (Josh Holloway) up against it. How would they find a way forward? That was the challenge before us in this week’s episode. Let’s see how they fare in Duster season 1 episode 5.

Jim, meanwhile, is in hot water with Saxton. He lost the Howard Hughes car, which he gave away to save his life. He can’t admit the truth, so instead looks like he bungled a big job.

Have you ever watched a show so bonkers, so brazenly over-the-top, that you start to wonder whether the writers were sipping kerosene instead of coffee? That’s Duster Episode 5 for you: a glorious explosion of betrayal, bad decisions, and unexpected bisexual romance, all wrapped in enough patriotic symbolism to make Uncle Sam weep into his bourbon.
Where Episode 4 built tension with subtlety, Episode 5 of Duster cranks the volume. Titled, ‘Ravishing Light and Glory’,, the episode takes us from moonshine-soaked desperation to wedding-crashing lesbian liberation and back again with a generous sprinkle of espionage, fireworks-as-weapons, and one deeply confused government official.
Jim Ellis (Josh Holloway) gets fired, Genesis gets dumped (and then saves the day with explosives), Nina infiltrates Saxton’s camp disguised as a Russian interpreter, Wade waffles between loyalty and fatherly guilt, and Chad Grant confirms himself as the human equivalent of mold: everywhere, unwanted, and strangely persistent.

When actress Mira Sorvino thinks about what and who helped her launch her career, she credits Tribeca Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal for giving her that break.
“Jane Rosenthal actually gave me my first job in the industry. It started off being a volunteer position — I was an intern at Tribeca Productions, reading scripts. Then it turned into a paid position as a reader after they ended up liking my coverage. I did that for two years, and during that time I actually read the script Amongst Friends that ended up being the first feature that I ever starred in. We went to Sundance and that launched my career,” the actress recalled. “Tribeca helped me start my career, and it’s always given a hand up to young artists and people who had the gumption to just go for it.”

Some men are born to run from trouble. Jim Ellis (Josh Holloway) seems like the kind who’d invite it to dinner, serve it whiskey, and play cards with it till dawn. I didn’t think Duster could get more chaotically thrilling, but episode 4, titled Criminalus Velocitus Super-Sonicus, proved me wrong and how gloriously.
It’s the kind of episode that doesn’t politely ask for your attention. It walks in unannounced, kicks the coffee table, and demands you watch closely. Because if you blink, you’ll miss a contract killer sipping whiskey with his target, a guilt-ridden agent chasing coordinates like a scavenger hunt, and a father-son dynamic more dented than the vintage car they wrecked.
Ellis, hilariously tragic and charmingly idiotic, finds himself hunted by Enrico the Blade, while Nina Hayes, our resolute agent with a soul far too heavy for her shoulders, tries to decode what looks...

This post contains spoilers from Duster episode 4 from this point forward.
At some point, we all have to pay the toll. But what happens when the bill comes due? How do you respond? Well, Jim (Josh Holloway) has been delaying his bill coming due for a couple weeks, but that ended in the fourth episode of this first season of Duster. Let’s see how it all plays out.
Enrique the Blade
As we open the episode, Jim is contemplating his troubles. In the pilot, he arranged to work for Mad Raoul when he planned to go on the run. Instead, he made a deal with Nina (Rachel Hilson) and stayed in town. That meant going back on his promise to Mad Raoul, which didn’t bode well. As we open this week, we find out that Mad Raoul is planning to connect, sending his top man, Enrique the Blade...

The arc of the universe is long, but it always bends towards that "Watchmen" meme. To paraphrase Doctor Manhattan: It's 2004 and I'm watching Josh Holloway play a suave, charming rogue lying to everyone with whom he crosses paths in a series co-created by J.J. Abrams; it's now 2025 and I'm watching Josh Holloway play a suave, charming rogue lying to everyone with whom he crosses paths in a series co-created by J.J. Abrams. In another 20 years, we may very well be putting on our virtual-reality visors in the five minutes of free time a day our AI overlords allot for us — I should mention that, in this hypothetical, everyone's favorite streaming service Quibi has been brought back from the dead — so we can watch Holloway and Abrams reunite on another show all over again.
The parallels between "Lost" and the new HBO Max series "Duster" might seem as if they begin and end here.
