‘The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper Finds Hope In Airport Bars
Image
During the last Presidential election, Jordan Klepper, one of the hosts of The Daily Show, was snowed in at Straubel International Airport in Green Bay, Wisconsin after a Trump rally.

His flight was delayed three and a half hours so he decamped to the airport bar.

Who happened to be sitting next to him? A man, dressed in a custom suit made to look like President Trump’s border wall, who had spent the previous day trying to troll Klepper and his crew as they filmed at the rally.

But instead of this turning into an argument or a fight (Klepper may be 6’4″ but was absent of his security team thanks to the snow), the two just talked. They may not have necessarily agreed with each other, Klepper realized that Brick Suit Guy, otherwise known as Blake Marnell, was not an idiot and admitted some of Trump’s weaknesses and...

Late Night Comedy Discovers the Dangers of Resistance Under Trump 2.0
Image
In Wes Craven’s 1997 hit slasher “Scream 2,” a movie-obsessed character spouts off the three rules of horror sequels: The body count is always bigger; 2. The death scenes are always much more elaborate; and 3. Never, under any circumstances, assume the killer is dead.

Those same rules could apply to late-night comedy’s approach to tackling Trump 2.0. Just over seven months in, Trump’s threats have already spurred a flurry of corporate parents to ante up large sums of money to settle lawsuits many experts deemed frivolous (higher body count), Stephen Colbert was fired from “The Late Show” mere days after blasting Paramount for paying the president (more elaborate death scene) and a scandal involving Jeffrey Epstein’s client list that would have ended any other president’s tenure continues to be carefully brushed aside by Trump allies in power (don’t assume the killer is dead).

When Trump was initially...

Jimmy Fallon’s Greg Gutfeld Interview Scores Biggest ‘Tonight Show’ Audience Since 2023 | Exclusive
Image
“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” scored its biggest audience since 2023 as it hosted Fox News personality Greg Gutfeld and the Jonas Brothers last week, TheWrap can reveal exclusively.

The Aug. 7 telecast, which welcomed Gutfeld and the Jonas Brothers to the NBC late night show alongside musical guest Good Charlotte, brought in 1.7 million viewers, according to Nielsen live-plus-same day figures, the highest viewership “The Tonight Show” has seen since Dec. 19, 2023, when the show hosted Bradley Cooper, Martha Stewart and Rufus and Martha Wainwright. (The measurements exclude live sports lead-ins.)

Viewership for the Aug. 7 show boosted viewership for the week of Aug. 4, which also welcomed Chris Pratt, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Seth Rogen to the show, to average 1.2 million, ranking as the most-watched week of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” since the week of May 19.

During the week of Aug. 4, “The Tonight Show” also hosted Rose Byrne, Jordan Klepper and Heidi Klum,...

Emmys upheaval: ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ now predicted to win Best Variety Talk Series
Image
Less than a month after CBS shockingly canceled The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the Emmy race for Best Variety Talk Series has been completely upended.

Based on initial Gold Derby predictions following the nominations in July, The Daily Show was favored to win its 12th Emmy in the category, extending its record. But in the weeks following The Late Show's cancellation, there's a new frontrunner in the race for Best Variety Talk Series.

Drumroll, please!

Variety Talk SeriesContenderOdds 1.Late Show with Stephen Colbert66.1% 2.The Daily Show30.5% 3.Jimmy Kimmel Live3.4%

According to the Gold Derby tracking data, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert now has a 65 percent chance of winning the Emmy, compared to a 31 percent chance for The Daily Show, and a 4 percent chance for Jimmy Kimmel Live. That's a stark difference from the last time we checked in on this race, on July 29, when The Late Show...

‘The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper Talks Up Late-Night Gang As He Makes His ‘Tonight Show’ Debut
Image
Jordan Klepper, one of the hosts of The Daily Show, is such a fan of late-night that when he started on the Comedy Central series he found himself in an awkward situation.

Making his debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Klepper revealed that on his first day at The Daily Show in 2014, he called host Jon Stewart “Dad.”

Working on a piece about Crimea, which had just been invaded by Russia, Klepper said: “I realize I’m in way over my head, and we have to figure out a way to make this work. Luckily, the people on The Daily Show are some of the smartest folks; they crafted a bit around me being overwhelmed, being put in a place for their first time, like Crimea and their first day on their job. I remember brainstorming with Jon … and nervously throwing out ideas. In my nervousness, I called Jon ‘Dad,...

Jordan Klepper Recalls Awkward Moment From His First Day With Jon Stewart That Made It On-Air | Video
Image
The first day at any new job can be overwhelming, but the first day at “The Daily Show” was truly terrifying for host Jordan Klepper. But his nerves did lead to a funny moment making it into his first segment.

Stopping by “The Tonight Show” on Tuesday, Klepper recalled his first day on the Comedy Central show, explaining that he only auditioned for the show four days earlier. He was still full of confidence and energy though — at least until he learned he was needed for a segment about Russia invading Crimea.

“Immediately I’m like, ‘What is Crimea? Is it a thing? Is it a place? Where is it?'” Klepper recalled. “I go into the office with Jon Stewart, who knows where Crimea is. He’s written editorials based on what’s happening in Crimea, he has opinions about it. And I realize I’m in way over my head,...

‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ surging in Emmy predictions after shocking cancellation
Image
What a difference a week — and a shocking cancellation — makes.

When the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on July 15, the Best Variety Talk Series race appeared to be a slam dunk for The Daily Show. However, following CBS' so-called "purely financial decision" to end The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on July 17, the forecast has become clouded.

The Late Show has a 26 percent chance of winning the Emmy, according to the Gold Derby predictions. That's a 19-point surge from the 7 percent chance the show had on the day it was canceled. Stephen Colbert's ascension is the direct result of Gold Derby's experts, editors, and users updating their picks, no doubt believing Television Academy members might want to reward The Late Show for what many see as a political decision, and provide a platform for a charged acceptance Emmy speech from Colbert.

Meanwhile, The Daily Show has seen its hopes drop significantly over that same time period.

‘The Daily Show’ Finally Has a Host Young People Will Watch
Image
Late-night television is struggling. We see it with Stephen Colbert’s Late Show, where CBS’ latest financial disclosures lead me to believe that someone on staff is setting money on fire every day as a pre-taping ritual. Whether Colbert is actually losing $40 million a year is really besides the point, in general late night is suffering a viewership crisis. The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart admitted as much earlier this week, calling the format the equivalent of a “Blockbuster kiosk inside of a Tower Records.”

But ironically, The Daily Show might be the first late-night program that actually hacked something that feels miraculous in a time when TikTok and short-form video content is frying Gen Z brain cells like electric mosquito traps in Florida. In fact, The Daily Show brought in new viewers this week in the 18-49 demographic.

How? They brought in a host under 40 years old who has a large internet following.

The Daily Show Gets A Brand New Host Amid Jon Stewart's Confession Of An Uncertain Future
Image
The Daily Show has appointed a brand-new host for the Tuesday through Thursday slot, despite Jon Stewart hinting at a possible cancellation for the show. The hugely successful talk show has run on Comedy Central since 1996, and Stewart had a long-term tenure as host from 1999 to 2015, after which he departed, before returning in 2024.

Despite the growth in viewership following Stewart's return, the host has intimated recently that The Daily Show could face the same cancellation fate as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. However, despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the show, a new host of The Daily Show has just been appointed.

Per THR, Josh Johnson will take over the hosting gig for The Daily Show in the coming days. He previously worked as a writer for NBC's Tonight Show before becoming a correspondent on the Comedy Central series. He will join a host rotation of Ronny Chieng,...

Jon Stewart helps lead The Daily Show to its biggest numbers in a decade
Image
Amid the changing tides of late-night TV, one thing remains constant: Jon Stewart delivers. The Daily Show saw its best ratings in 10 years, and it's all thanks to Stewart's return.

According to Nielsen data, The Daily Show's second quarter of 2025 returned the best quarterly share since 2015's third quarter. The numbers reflect viewers in the 18-49 demo in live-plus-three numbers, a key share of the audience for networks. The last time numbers were this good, Jon Stewart was saying goodbye to The Daily Show for what we believed was the last time.

Now, Stewart has turned Monday nights into must-see TV. The lone night Stewart is behind the desk has become The Daily Show’s biggest winner. Ratings for Mondays are up 43% compared to when he returned in the first quarter of 2024.

That's not to completely dismiss the rotating cast of correspondents that fill in the rest of the week behind Stewart.

‘The Daily Show’ Explains Trump’s Beef With Jerome Powell: Nothing Gets Him Madder ‘Than Someone Doing Their Job Well’ | Video
Image
One of the latest targets of Donald Trump’s rage is Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, so on Thursday night, “The Daily Show” host Jordan Klepper explained why. It all comes down to Powell just doing his job.

Earlier this week, Trump commented that he was surprised Powell was ever appointed, let alone extended as chairman. And while it’s true that former president Joe Biden extended Powell’s tenure, he was not the president who appointed the man to begin with. Trump himself appointed Powell back in 2017.

“I get it. I’m also trying desperately to forget everything that happened during Trump’s first term,” Klepper joked.

Since appointing Powell, Trump has publicly hurled insults his way multiple times over. So, Klepper explained why Powell has become a target.

“I mean, the way Trump talks about him, you’d think they caught him at a Coldplay concert with Trump’s wife,...

Will Skydance Cancel ‘The Daily Show’? Jon Stewart Weighs In On Future Of Late-Night Series
Image
The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart, who recently called Paramount Global’s settlement with President Donald Trump “shameful”, has weighed in on the future of the late-night show.

Asked whether Skydance, which is in the process of buying Paramount Global, parent company of his network Comedy Central, would cancel the irascible talk show, Stewart essentially shrugged his shoulders.

But he did reveal that he has not had any contact with David Ellison or others at Skydance and joked that he’s been “kicked out of shittier establishments than that” and the company may “sell the whole fucking place for parts”.

He also compared Comedy Central to muzak.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t heard anything from them,” he said on his podcast The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart. “They haven’t called me and said like ‘Don’t get too comfortable in that office, Stewart.’ But let me tell you something, I...

Here Are the Best Epstein Jokes That Are Taking Over Late Night
Image
The crimes of Jeffrey Epstein aren’t funny. He ruined countless lives and created an unprecedented network of pedophilia and exploitation. He died before he could answer for any of it, before he could provide any details about his conspirators, clients and collaborators. It’s bleak shit. However, watching the Trumpverse implode over their fumbling and incoherent attempts to bury the entire thing has been funny.

The Department of Justice saying there’s no client list then releasing an edited clip of Epstein’s cell before his death, Trump asking everyone to just “forget about it” — this has culminated in Maga civil war. Apparently, there are sects of the right-wing cabal that actually do draw the line at child abuse. Everyone from Roseanne Barr to Andrew Schulz is threatening to jump ship. This chaos has been ripe picking for the late-night hosts, and Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jordan Klepper and...

Jordan Klepper Charts Trump’s Long History With Jeffrey Epstein on ‘The Daily Show’

Donald Trump has a decades-long history with Jeffrey Epstein and Jordan Klepper has the receipts. On the latest episode of The Daily Show, Klepper took viewers through the many associations between the president, Epstein, and Ghislaine Maxwell.

The host reflected on the “Maga civil war” that has been brewing ever since the Trump administration said they would not be releasing the Epstein files after all. Trump’s latest excuse is that the files were created by Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and James Comey, a plan which Klepper noted “sounds so...

Emmy Nominations Records and Milestones: RuPaul Becomes Most Nominated Reality Host for ‘Drag Race’
Image
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “The Daily Show” shattered records at the 2025 Emmy nominations, making new franchise records and awards history.

With his 10th consecutive nomination, RuPaul Charles now holds the record of having the most nominations for Outstanding Host for Reality or Reality Competition Program, breaking the previously held tie and making the host the sole record holder.

The drag competition franchise also earned 10 nominations, making it the most nominated of any reality or reality competition program this year. And with nine nominations, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” surpassed its own record for the most and consecutive nominations ever for Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program, having been nominated every year since the category was created.

Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show” earned 12 nominations, making the Comedy Central series the most nominated late-night series for the second consecutive year. Additionally, the series outpaced its previously held franchise record of seven nominations.

‘The Daily Show’ Hits A Ten-Year Ratings High
Image
When Jon Stewart left The Daily Show in August 2015, his final episode and its lead-up helped Comedy Central to some pretty decent numbers for the man who arguably changed the state of late-night.

Stewart’s return to ratings success has been well documented but what might be surprising is that The Daily Show just scored its biggest quarterly share in ten years – since Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band sent him off to the Land of Hope and Dreams.

Nielsen data shows that the second quarter of 2025 was the show’s best quarterly share since the third quarter of 2015 when it comes to viewers in the 18-49 demo in live-plus-three numbers.

It’s somewhat of a surprise given that his first show back in February 2024 was the most-watched episode of the show in five years and the period in question – April, May and June – scored higher ratings than the...

‘The Daily Show’ leads Best Talk Series Emmy odds amid outrage over the low number of available slots
Image
Now this is something to talk about.

There's outrage in Hollywood over the expected number of nomination slots for the Best Talk Series Emmy. With only 13 submissions this year, the category is dropping from four nominees to a historic low of three. In this era of Peak TV, that simply doesn't seem like enough representation.

In 2023, buoyed by industry complaints that Last Week Tonight With John Oliver kept winning the talk-show category despite not exactly being one, the Television Academy reimagined the variety races as Best Talk Series and Best Scripted Variety Series. The former is for programs that rely on unscripted moments such as interviewing guests, while the latter is for variety fare, essentially scripted from start to finish. That solved the John Oliver problem, but it also limited the number of submissions for each category. Last year, there were 14 entries for Best Talk Series, which yielded four nominees,...

‘The Daily Show’ Keeps Desi Lydic on Her Toes

On May 8, the day before she popped on a Zoom for this conversation, Desi Lydic was wrapping up prep for that evening’s The Daily Show when the 4:30 curse struck again. White smoke was billowing in Vatican City, and now the staff of the Comedy Central institution needed to reshape the first half of the episode around the announcement of an American pope. “We’ll have an entire show written and then some time between 4 and 5 o’clock, something will happen,” says Lydic, who shares the hosting carousel with Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta and Jon Stewart. “Then we have just enough time to scrap it and start from scratch.”

‘Daily Show’ Argues Trump Is Like the Villain of ‘Les Miz’ Ahead of Weekend Protests in LA, NYC | Video
Image
While reporting about the upcoming protests set to take place in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. this weekend, “The Daily Show’s” Michael Kosta and Jordan Klepper argued over which “Les Misérables” character Donald Trump is most like between Jean Valjean and Javert.

“These detention raids are a cruel display of Trump’s villainy. He’s definitely the Javert of our time,” Kosta chimed in first.

His opinion on the subject stemmed from recent interview Trump did while walking the red carpet for the Kennedy Center’s showing of the “Les Misérables” musical. While there, a reporter asked Trump if he identified more with Javert, the main antagonist in the story, or main protagonist Jean Valjean. His response? “I don’t know.”

Klepper chimed in, shutting down Kosta’s judgement and throwing some shade at his fellow “Daily Show” colleague while he was at it.

‘The Daily Show’ Hosts On Political Optimism, Catharsis & Hunting Pythons
Image
Michael Kosta, one of the hosts of The Daily Show, is currently in the Everglades hunting pythons.

However, while Desi Lydic hosts the show this week, Kosta is not just taking a break from the bleak political situation with a good ol’ snake hunt. He’s in the field, one of The Daily Show’s signature segments.

“One of my favorite things we do on The Daily Show is going out to the field,” he said at a FYC event in L.A. before heading to Naples, near where three men recently caught a 25-foot Burmese python, one of a number of invasive species destroying the Everglades National Park.

Kosta is not the only member of the new hosting team that has recently been hunting invasive species.

Only 18 months ago, Ronny Chieng was also in Florida to highlight the challenges posed by lionfish, which prey on 80% of fish on the reef,...

Inside ‘The Daily Show’: The team behind the satirical news series on politics, puppies, punchlines — and staying sane
Image
Since its debut in 1996, The Daily Show has been a cornerstone of political satire and late-night comedy. Under Jon Stewart’s iconic leadership from 1999 to 2015, it evolved into a cultural phenomenon that reshaped how America engages with the news. After Stewart stepped down from his daily hosting duties, Trevor Noah took over the news desk. Following Noah’s departure, Stewart made a return in 2024 as a weekly guest host on Mondays, joining a dynamic team of rotating hosts — Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta — and correspondents Troy Iwata, Josh Johnson and Grace Kuhlenschmidt. Each brings their own sharp perspective to the desk and in the field, continuing the show’s tradition of blending humor with hard-hitting commentary. The Daily Show won two 2024 Emmy Awards for Best Talk Series and Best Picture Editing for Variety Programming from seven nominations, as well as the 2023 Emmy Award for Best Talk Series.

‘The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart Defends Writers Amid Tech Growth: “We Are Feeling The Plate Shift Underneath Us”
Image
Jon Stewart gave a stirring defense of writers as tech companies increasingly dominate the entertainment business.

The Daily Show host said the loss of opportunities for writers as technology companies, such as Apple, Netflix and Amazon move further into the business, would be a “tragic thing to lose”.

At an FYC event to promote the Comedy Central late-night host, Stewart, who previously hosted The Problem with Jon Stewart for Apple, said, “We are feeling the plate shift underneath us.”

“We cling onto this idea that what we do is a craft, and we do it for connection. As we watch these tech companies get into content, it is very important for us that writers are part of the process. That the team can touch the product so they can grow as artists. We have a respect for the craft. A tech company buys it and suddenly downgrades a writers room...

‘The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng Revels In The “Countercultural” Nature Of The “Circus”
Image
Ronny Chieng became a U.S. citizen in April. The day it happened was a normal day at work with Chieng sitting behind the desk of The Daily Show, until it wasn’t.

Answering questions from the audience, Chieng was surprised by Bill Murray, a guest on that evening’s show, who congratulated him on his achievement, kissing him on the cheek and saluting him before leaving in a very Murray way.

“It’s a crazy day,” said Chieng. “It is a crazy experience to become a U.S. citizen the same day you’re supposed to interview Bill Murray. It’s been a long day, I had to go for the interview, they ask you like 100 questions. I had to memorize how many colonies there were and who’s the President right now. It was very difficult.”

Chieng is pretty clearly aware of who the U.S. President is at any moment,...

‘The Daily Show’ Unveils ‘Racial Support Pilots,’ Mocking Dei Criticism | Video
Image
Nathan Fielder isn’t the only comedian who’s allowed to joke about airline pilots. “The Daily Show” made fun of Dei hand-wringing around the industry on Tuesday with the introduction of its latest service: White Flight.

The fake commercial starts with a man rolling his eyes and muttering “Dei” at two pilots who happen to be a Black man and a woman.

“Are your passengers uncomfortable with the look of your pilots?” a cheery woman says in the Comedy Central voiceover. “Then you need White Flight, a revolutionary new service offering racial support pilots. Sign up and your diverse pilots will be given one of our White Flight stand-ins. Passengers will be reassured by a handsome Caucasian pilot with a penis.”

Jordan Klepper stars as the poster pilot for White Flight, a white man who happily greets passengers as they board the plane — but who’s only qualified to...

Image
Jordan Klepper’s “Fingers the Pulse: Maga: The Next Generation” has earned the best share ever for “The Daily Show Presents,” TheWrap has exclusively learned. It’s also the highest-rated “Tds Presents” special for the Comedy Central late night program in four years.

The special earned a share of 3.89, up 106% compared to the prior “Tds Presents” episode share of 1.89. It also scored a 0.241 rating, up 50% from the 0.151 rating for the most recent “Tds Presents” special.

“Fingers the Pulse: Maga: The Next Generation” also outperformed Klepper’s prior “Tds Presents” special on Paramount+ by 35%.

The half-hour special follows Klepper as he explores the world of young Maga – a pocket of young voters who emerged in support of Donald Trump during the 2024 election and made him the Republican candidate with the strongest performance with voters under 30 since 2008.

It marks Klepper’s sixth “Fingers the Pulse” special to date, following “Rally Together,” “Moscow Tools,...

‘The Daily Show’ editor Cathy Trasborg on letting Trump supporters ‘reveal themselves’ in the edit: ‘We just let them play out’
Image
The Daily Show editor Cathy Trasborg has edited hundreds of episodes of the long-running late-night series, earning an Emmy Award for Best Picture Editing for Variety Programming (Segment) last year and three other nominations since 2020.

“I’ve learned the show a little bit better, the type of direction that we’re looking to go in, and what kind of comedic pacing they’re looking for in our field pieces, or our sketches,” Trasborg tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Editors panel when asked how her time on the show has evolved since her first episode in 2019.

“I started with the Trump administration in 2019, and we got a little bit of a reprieve with Biden, and now we're back with Trump again, and he's flooding the zone all the time with his news,” she adds. “So every day it’s changing. I don’t think I watched the...

‘The Daily Show’ Host Jordan Klepper Dissects the Dangerous and Hopeful Sides of Young Maga for ‘Fingers the Pulse’
Image
Ever since the 2024 election showed a wave of young voters supporting Donald Trump, Jordan Klepper and “The Daily Show” have been interested in exploring the reasons behind that shift. The Comedy Central senior correspondent and occasional host knew the topic would be perfect for a deep dive. But what he didn’t expect was how hollow this new wave of ideology would feel.

“There is more movement and excitement about the Maga movement, but there’s not an ideological yearning for it,” Klepper told TheWrap.

The topic lies at the center of Klepper’s latest “Fingers the Pulse” segment. Though it’s part of a satirical comedy show, Klepper views these segments as a kind of anthropological experiment where his own preconceived notions are tested by reality. Over the course of the roughly half-hour special, “Maga: The Next Generation” travels everywhere from the “Gulf of America” during spring break and...

Jordan Klepper on What New ‘Daily Show’ Special Taught Him About Trump Youth
Image
For his sixth The Daily Show special, Jordan Klepper is taking on the Maga youth in The Daily Show Presents: Jordan Klepper Fingers The Pulse: Maga: The Next Generation, a half-hour segment airing after directly Monday’s (May 19) new edition of The Daily Show. The special finds the clever correspondent conversing with Gen Z Donald Trump supporters at Texas A&m, a Miami UFC fight, and in Clearwater, Florida, for spring break. He also interviews a few rather notorious members of the Maga faithful like former UFC fighter-turned-January 6 convict Scott Fairlamb and the leaders of the Tampa Bay Young Republicans who were criticized for inviting right-wing rabble rouser Andrew Tate to speak to them. The responses he gets from his interview subjects are, as usual, often shocking and contradictory, and Klepper’s quick wit keeps the exchanges from veering into the morose. So why this particular topic, what were...

‘Daily Show’ Sets Jordan Klepper Special ‘Maga: The Next Generation,’ About Young Trump Voters (Exclusive)
Image
Jordan Klepper will once again “finger the pulse” in a new Comedy Central special focused on young Donald Trump voters.

Presented by “The Daily Show,” the special, titled “Maga: The Next Generation,” will premiere immediately following “The Daily Show” on May 19 at 11:30 p.m. It will stream on Paramount+ and be available on “The Daily Show’s” YouTube channel starting May 20.

Klepper, the “Daily Show” host known for his man-on-the-street interviews at Trump rallies, will meet young Republicans where they are, visiting everywhere from college campuses to Mma octagons. He’ll seek to answer the following questions: “In 2024, Donald Trump did better with voters under 30 than any Republican candidate since 2008. Was it because of economic anxiety or were they drawn to the rizz of a 78-year-old fist dancing to Ymca? Is the Maga vibe shift permanent, or are young voters just rebelling against a Constitution that’s been bossing America around for 250 years?...

‘The Daily Show’ Is In “Game Shape” To Deal With Political Carnage – Contenders TV: Documentary, Unscripted & Variety
Image
The rhythm of late-night television changed back in 2017 when Donald Trump became President, forcing all of the talk shows to prepare for the dreaded 4 p.m. rewrite.

So, when Trump was reelected for a second term, it’s a challenge that all of the late-night shows know how to face.

The team behind The Daily Show says they’re already in “game shape” to handle it.

Desi Lydic, one of the show’s hosts alongside Jon Stewart, Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper and Michael Kosta, was behind the desk earlier this month during “tariff week,” which saw the news change almost hourly. How do you handle a situation like that?

“Oh my god, with a lot of help from a lot of staff members and some opiates,” Lydic joked during Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary, Unscripted & Variety event. “[That] was a bit of a roller-coaster news week.

Tim Baltz Has Always Been ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Pole-Dancing, Monkey-Kissing Moral Center
Image
Watching HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones over four seasons, nobody can argue that many characters —each of them members of a self-serving family of megachurch moguls — have experienced a great deal of personal growth. Creator and star Danny McBride is the first to admit that they’re all devious scoundrels. But amidst all of that moral bankruptcy, at least one of the lot has emerged with their integrity intact.

Tim Baltz’s tenure playing Bj has seen him brawl with a naked man, suffer a catastrophic spill during a pole dance and in these final episodes, apparently french kiss a monkey. But all that has only fortified a character who went from hapless brother-in-law to inarguably the most evolved one of the bunch. “They see him as pathetic, yet he’s the person who retains his values throughout,” says Baltz. “The tension in his life is that he’s behaving...

Jon Stewart Won’t Stop Trolling Elon Musk on ‘The Daily Show’
Image
Apparently dismantling the federal government is a lot easier than having a brief chat with the fifth-billed star of Death to Smoochy.

It’s been three weeks since Elon Musk publicly offered to guest on The Daily Show, after Jon Stewart’s lengthy takedown of the Trump administration’s Doge cuts. But Musk only agreed to appear on the Comedy Central show if the interview “airs unedited,” which wasn’t a problem since, as Stewart pointed out, “that’s actually how the in-studio interviews normally air.”

The Daily Show staff immediately took him up on said offer via a post on social media, and Stewart later reiterated that invitation on the air, claiming that he’d be “delighted” to have the chainsaw-wielding billionaire on the show. In retrospect, that may have been the best acting that Stewart has done since 1998’s The Faculty.

But Musk was a no-show. He...

‘The Daily Show’ Creates Charity to Help Elon Musk: ‘This Man Is Barely Worth $300 Billion’ | Video
Image
“The Daily Show” is dedicating itself to a worthy cause: making comically rich billionaire Elon Musk even richer. At least Troy Iwata is.

“This man is barely worth $300 billion at this point, but we can change that,” the senior correspondent said on Thursday night. As he spoke, the light around him darkened and soft piano played, mimicking charity commercials. “For the simple price of $50,000, you can help a 53-year-old boy afford all the things he was already able to afford.”

It should be noted that Iwata started by asking the “Daily Show” audience for a measly $30,000 or, as he put it, “just 70,000 cups of coffee a day.” That number ramped up to $2.5 million by the end of the segment. It’s all in the interest of making sure “the richest man in America stays the richest man in America,” Iwata explained.

Repeatedly, host Jordan Klepper interrupted Iwata and tried to stop his plug.

‘The Daily Show’ Creates Welcome Back Video Catching Up Astronauts Stranded in Space for 9 Months: ‘Welcome to Hell’
Image
A pair of NASA astronauts whose 1-week mission unexpectedly turned into nine months on the International Space Station are back on Earth. So to welcome them home, “The Daily Show” went ahead and created a video catching them up on everything they’ve missed.

On Wednesday night’s episode of the Comedy Central series, host Jordan Klepper applauded the safe return of Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, whose landing actually included an appearance from dolphins who happened to be nearby.

“That is incredible. I mean, I wish the dolphins hadn’t welcomed them back with a Sieg Heil, but still, it’s a beautiful moment for humanity,” Klepper joked.

The host was, of course, referring to Elon Musk appearing to give a Nazi salute at Donald Trump’s inauguration, which the astronauts missed while in space. And that’s not the only thing they missed, so “The Daily Show” — or NASA,...

‘The Daily Show’: Jordan Klepper Isn’t Surprised Trump Defended Ignoring Judge’s Order With ‘Oral Doesn’t Count’ | Video
Image
The Trump administration defended ignoring an order from a federal judge this week by saying the verbal order came too late after the written one and thus “didn’t count” — and “The Daily Show” host Jordan Klepper isn’t surprised.

This particular order came as President Donald Trump used an obscure law known as the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport several people he suspected of being Venezuelan gang members. Said law is meant to be used during wartime, and allows the government to deport people without due process. It was last used to target Japanese Americans during World War II.

“Why does Trump always have to pick the oldest, most racist laws to do what he wants to do?” Klepper wondered before imitating Trump. “‘I’m cutting taxes under the authority of the ‘It’s Ok to Drown Italians Law of 1863.'”

But, in an emergency hearing over the weekend,...

Is The Late Show with Stephen Colbert new tonight, March 18?
Image
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert left fans in the dark to start the week. But what should they expect to see on CBS tonight?

There was a noticeable hole in the late-night TV lineup to start the week. Stephen Colbert and his crew were absent, leaving the Late Show audience to look elsewhere for reaction to what transpired over the weekend.

Unfortunately, that trend will continue on Tuesday night. There will not be a new episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tonight.

Instead, CBS will reair the February 17 episode. Tune in to revisit Colbert's conversation with fellow late-night TV host and Daily Show alum John Oliver. The War and the Treaty served as the musical guest that night.

What to watch instead of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tonight

Once again, late-night TV audiences will have to channel surf to find an alternative. The good news...
