Kafka Asagari Admitted Sigma Is the Easiest ‘Bungo Stray Dogs’ Character to Write Because “He’s completely average”
Image
Bungo Stray Dogs has a brilliant range of characters, all based on authors and important historical figures. One character stands out amongst them, and it’s Sigma. He serves as the main antagonist of the Sky Casino Arc, and then becomes somewhat of an ally of the Armed Detective Agency (Ada).

Sigma was created from the Book by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, making him a blank slate. He struggles with his identity and purpose, making him a relatable and fan favorite character quite quickly. He has fairly simple motivations and personality in Bungo Stray Dogs, as compared to everyone else.

He also isn’t a direct reference to any author or historical figure, giving Kafka Asagiri freedom to choose how to write him. In Bungo Stray Dogs, he might be the most innocent character. Sigma’s appeal lies in his normalcy as compared to the others, something the author even admitted.

Despite being born from the Book,...

We’ve Never Understood What ‘Bungo Stray Dogs’ Was Trying to Tell Us All This Time
Image
Bungo Stray Dogs is one of those stories that lures in its audience with its comedy and action tropes and traps them with a complex plot. The characters who at first feel lightheaded or vicious turn out to be so because of their tragic past. Nothing is as it seems in the story.

The series often shows the characters exploring their purpose in life. The protagonist, Atsushi, for example, had no idea who he truly was. It also talks about redemption through various character arcs and how they change themselves. But as it turns out, we did not quite grasp the plot’s aim in its entirety.

The Core Theme of ‘Bungo Stray Dogs’ Revolves Around Its Most Eccentric Character Because “I think of Dazai as a donut”
Image
Kafka Asagiri’s Bungo Stray Dogs is a literary homage that blends action and psychological depth to deliver a story for the ages. Every major character in Bungo Stray Dogs is based on a famous real-world author who caught Asagiri-san’s attention, and their powers are based on the masterpieces of these authors (like Akutagawa’s Rashomon).

Dazai Osamu is perhaps the story’s most important character. His playful yet tormented personality is based on the real-life author Dazai Osamu and his work, No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku). While he is mostly suicidal, his eccentric personality is a driving factor in the story, and it resonates with universal struggles.

While the simplest way to describe Dazai in Bungo Stray Dogs is to call him a suicidal maniac, the truth couldn’t be farther away.

Dazai’s Eccentric Personality in Bungo Stray Dogs Distracts Fans From the Real Purpose of the Story
Image
Osamu Dazai can easily turn his head, raise a peace sign with a ‘teehee’ sound, and get fans to swoon over him. Or he could get morbid as he slays his enemies in the most torturous ways possible. Dazai’s duality and eccentricity in Bungo Stray Dogs has made him a fan-favorite character.

As beneficial as that is for the character’s popularity, his antics take away the focus from the complex narrative of Bungo Stray Dogs. The story is riddled with references from literature and the lives of famous authors. The complexities are a treat for those who like to dig deep, but Dazai doesn’t allow most fans to look beyond the surface.

With anime becoming increasingly popular around the world, so has the demand for more diverse characters, and that has led to some of the most iconic black characters in anime. Black characters have become more popular both in Japan and outside, especially in the past few decades as anime fandom grows. Some mangaka, like Eichiro Oda, were way ahead of their time by incorporating Black characters in their work which paved the way for future creators to follow suit.

More than just a handful of small examples in lesser-known works, black characters can be found in even the biggest anime franchises. Trailblazers like Tite Kubo and Masashi Kishimoto have designed some of the most memorable black characters in anime and manga.

This set a precedent for a new generation of manga and anime creators who looked up to these icons and wrote some deep and multifaceted characters. The most iconic...

The Correct Order To Watch Bungo Stray Dogs
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Bungo Stray Dogs."

Kafka Asagiri's "Bungo Stray Dogs" starts off with a note of pathos. An orphaned teenager named Atsushi keels over in hunger after being kicked out of his orphanage, lamenting that he can never belong. Just when these sentiments start to soar, though, the mood shifts as Atsushi accidentally saves an eccentric detective from drowning. This detective, Dazai Osamu (who made /Film's rundown of the strongest anime characters), acts as the conduit to an undiscovered world of special abilities and faction rivalries, exposing an invisible war being fought in the bustling city of Yokohama. However, Asagiri's evolving story about superpowered detectives and mafia bosses is not always about such deathly serious matters, as comedic levity is an integral part of a world plunged into chaos. This bittersweetness elevates "Bungo Stray Dogs" into an experience that one cannot get enough of.

Bungo Stray Dogs Is Already Dark, But One Official Alternate Is Somehow Even More Brutal
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Bungo Stray Dogs: Beast

Bungo Stray Dogs: Beast is an official alternate universe of the original Bungo Stray Dogs series, offering a much grimmer and darker take on the characters and events that unfold. Unlike the main storyline, Beast flips roles and explores how the characters fates could have dramatically changed under different circumstances. This alternate reality provides fans with a deeper understanding of the mysterious book in the original timeline and how it partially functions.

Bungo Stray Dogs: Beast doesnt shy away from making the storyline darker than it already was. The main protagonist, Atsushi, is plunged into a role that doesnt fit his kind personality, whereas Akutagawa is pulled into a role most foreign to him. Yet, the greatest and most shocking change comes from none other than Osamu Dazai, who is revealed to have an even greater understanding than anyone first assumed.

Best Quotes From Bungo Stray Dogs
Image
When you watch Bungo Stray Dogs it’s easy to get sucked into the super abilities, surprising plot twists and charisma of the characters. Many of those characters are loose allusions to different literary figures from around the world such as F. Scott Key Fitzgerald and Osamu Dazai. It makes sense that an anime series that makes nods to various authors and poets would have quality lines sprinkled throughout; whether it be a character sharing their unique life philosophy or just waxing poetic because it sounds cool and profound. I may not have captured all of them, but here’s a list of some of the best quotes from Bungo Stray Dogs ! Bungo Stray Dogs has a colorful cast of characters. Nearly everyone has a name and power based on a well-known author and their work. Despite this similarity, the characters themselves are different people. They look and act more like anime characters than their namesakes; this makes them more like inspirations than counterparts. The anime characters have no obligation to share anything with their namesakes beyond their names, and even that rule gets bent sometimes. However, there are times when other things about these two groups line up—like the day they were born.

There are plenty of ways to get to know the Bungo Stray Dogs cast besides their roles in the anime and their birthdays. Plenty of information...

How Bungou Stray Dogs' Queer Subtext Amplifies Its Greatness
Image
Bungou Stray Dogs is a standout in modern anime for its strong characters, witty dialogue, and skillful storytelling. Dazai Osamu is not just one of the protagonists; he's the very embodiment of ambiguity and complexity. In the opening moments of the first episode, Dazai's obsession with finding the perfect way to die is immediately established, however, it is not simply this that makes him such a walking riddle. In the world of anime narratives, characters often fall into set roles and patterns. His connections with Oda, Atsushi, and Akutagawa, however, defy these conventions. Dazai's relationships are infused with queer subtext, creating layers of interpretation that enrich the story and allow for a more nuanced exploration of identity, acceptance, and the multifaceted nature of human connections.

These bonds in Bungou Stray Dogs elevate the anime into a work that goes way above simple entertainment. The relationship between Dazai, Oda, Atsushi, and...

Anime Review: Bungo Stray Dogs Season 2 (2016) by Takuya Igarashi

To build upon the compelling first season, which introduced a formidable new adversary in the Guild and unveiled Osamu's surprising past as an executive member of the Port Mafia, the creators of “Bungo Stray Dogs” choose to rewind the narrative, delving into Osamu's backstory before progressing with the central storyline. The result is excellent once more, also because the second season takes a rather darker, more mature-oriented approach to the story.

Film Review: re:member (2022) by Eiichiro Hasumi
Image
Over the course of his career, Eichiro Hasumi has been making quite a name for himself directing entertaining genre features, even though the majority of them is somewhat forgettable. Apart from “Assassination Classroom: Graduation” he is perhaps best known for this entries into the “Resident Evil”-franchise, “Infinite Darkness” and the upcoming “Death Island”, which cemented the reputation of the animated entries of the franchise being in many ways superior to the lukewarm features by the likes of Paul W.S. Anderson. In between these last two projects, he directed “re:member” (also known as “Re/Member”), which was released on Netflix, and which is his take on the horror genre, blending ideas from J-horror, the slasher genre and time travel movies.
