Tom Cullen wears "the heaviest costume they've ever made" in House of the Dragon season 3
Image
HBO is filming the third season of House of the Dragon as we speak, and while we'll catch up with lots of familiar faces, there will be some new characters in the mix too. That includes Luther Largent, the commander of the Gold Cloaks in King's Landing, played by Downton Abbey veteran Tom Cullen.

Cullen talked a bit with Country & Townhouse about his new role. "I’m a big fan of the whole world. It’s been utterly thrilling to be involved thus far!" he said. "Started filming a few months ago. It’s been great. Everyone is so kind. Not an ego in sight."

I have the heaviest costume they’ve ever made, apparently, so that’s the only challenging thing. But I would wear it forever if it means I get to be in that world.

In George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, Luther Largent is a tall,...

The Gold Season 2 Review: Chasing the Ghosts of a Golden Curse
Image
All stories of stolen treasure are, at their foundation, stories about a void. The first season of The Gold showed us the solid object: its theft, its melting, its dispersal. The second season concerns itself with something far heavier—the half that vanished.

It is a narrative built around an absence, a gravitational phantom pulling everything into its orbit. We have lept forward into the 1990s, an era where the brutalist grit of the old decade gives way to a slicker, borderless world. This new landscape is the perfect place for a ghost to thrive.

The story moves beyond London’s confines, becoming a global pilgrimage of sin and consequence. We find John “Goldfinger” Palmer in Tenerife, a sun-bleached Icarus building a kingdom on a lie. We meet Charlie Miller, a man burdened with the physical weight of this mythical bullion.

And we watch Dcs Brian Boyce, a man condemned...

Given HBO’s History of Reusing Top Talent, One ‘The Last of Us’ S2 Star Could Join House of the Dragon Season 3
Image
HBO productions have been an unparalleled goliath in the small screen since the advent of prestige TV, starting with The Sopranos. While the network isn’t immune to mishaps, given its years-long dominance on TV, longtime viewers have come to expect quality whenever a show releases under the HBO banner.

While this boils down to HBO’s nature of venturing into untouched territories with its stories, marking a stark departure from networks that rely on established formats, one common link among them has been their impeccable actors. With Isabela Merced proving to be the next reliable talent with The Last of US season 2, it’s safe to say this won’t be her last rodeo with the network.

A ‘House of the Dragon’ Is Going to Prison for This New British Drama
Image
Among many other contributing factors, much of House of the Dragon's enormous success can be chalked down to its impressive and star-studded ensemble cast. From Emma D'Arcy to Olivia Cooke and former Doctor Who, Matt Smith, the triumph of the show thus far will see even more eyes follow its many acclaimed actors in their future projects. One such actor, Phil Daniels, who portrays Maester Gerardys in the series, is someone with a wonderful pedigree as a performer, with many likely excited to learn of his latest casting in a brand-new BBC prison drama, Waiting for the Out (w/t), where he portrays prisoner Frank.

As cited on Radio Times, the Quadrophenia actor joins several other exciting names in the upcoming six-part adaptation of Andy West’s memoir The Life Inside, including the likes of Gerard Kearns (The Day of the Jackal), Stephen Wight (Bergerac), Samantha Spiro (Sex Education...

Aemond Targaryen Is Ready To Take Flight With Latest 'House of the Dragon' Funko Pop
Image
Another dragonrider has been added to Funko's Pop! Rides collection for House of the Dragon. Prince Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar have been transformed into a brand new Funko figure. They will join the rest of his family in this latest set. While its release date has yet to be announced, the figure in question is now listed on the official Funko website.

With a listed price of $30, the Aemond Targaryen with Vhagar figure is part of the Pop! Rides Deluxe set. It's 15.2 cm (6 inches) tall and will have the Prince Regent mounted on his dragon. Based on the renders, Vhagar's entire body isn't going to be featured, which makes sense considering that she's a really large dragon, as seen in the show. While the release date for this figure has yet to be listed on the Funko site, online retailer Popculcha estimates that the figure will be...

It's been far too long since the most recent season of House of the Dragon concluded on HBO, and the wait for new episodes rages on and on, but at least we're continuing to receive news about what's to come in season 3. The 15 Best Stephen King Characters, Ranked
Image
Stephen King is happy to describe his stories like they're a burger-and-fries combo meal. It's a fair self-assessment; King's writing is cozy and approachable in how it tells us about horror and mystery, saving the rare moments of his more lyrical art for the pages where it punches the most. His characters are often familiar to the middle class of the past decades, everyday folk put at odds with something beyond their experience. Many of them do what they must, then fade. King is best at ideas and structure, but his endings -- and even the characters that carry them -- are sometimes weighed down with flaws.

That never stops one of his books from being great fun to devour, and sometimes, some of King's characters get a shine to them that makes them stand out. We're going to have a palaver with 15 of his best, a ka-tet of men...

Best films of 2024 in the UK: No 1 – All of Us Strangers
Andrew Haigh
Andrew Haigh’s devastating metaphysical drama follows a lonely gay writer as he interacts with the ghosts of his parents

Andrew Scott on starring in All of StrangersThe best films of 2024 in the UK

Underneath the radical swoon of Andrew Haigh’s ground-shifting gay drama Weekend was a swell of sadness. Clearer in the film’s more universal right-people-wrong-time romance but also in the more specific, and knottier, queerness. It was a rare, giddy uplift to see young gay men fall headfirst for each other with such believable and unfettered intimacy but their affection existed in a world full of caveats – where to kiss, how to act, who to be – and it was only in privacy that they could really be themselves. “When I’m at home I’m absolutely fine,” Tom Cullen’s Russell says. “I’m happy being gay … It’s when I go outside …”

10 Shows to Fill the Void Left by My Lady Jane
Image
My Lady Jane has sadly been added to the ever-growing list of streaming shows canceled after just one season. Despite being praised as one of the best shows of the year so far, the series didn't attract enough viewers to earn another season. While the story did end on a positive note, fans were understandably disappointed by the news, especially since the show only adapted the first half of the book on which it was based. The fanbase is already rallying to save the series, but as they wait to see if another platform will grant their wish, they might want to check out some other shows in the same vein.

With its seamless blend of comedy, fantasy elements, revisionist history and steamy romance, My Lady Jane had a lot to offer viewers. Fans of the series might have a difficult time finding another show that ticks all the same boxes,...

“I Feel Like I’ve Grown Up”: ‘Line Of Duty’ Star Vicky McClure On Stepping Out Her Comfort Zone In Paramount+ UK Thriller Series ‘Insomnia’
Image
Whether playing Di Kate Fleming in Line of Duty or a back-against-the-wall bomb disposal expert in ITV’s Trigger Point, Vicky McClure has mastered the art of procedurals over the years.

But in Paramount+ series Insomnia from The Crown producer Left Bank, in which she plays a career woman, Emma, who experiences a breakdown when she suddenly stops being able to sleep, the actor-producer bucked the trend.

“I feel like I’ve grown up, I’m 40 now,” McClure told an Insomnia Q&a in London late last month. “There’s a lot of procedural drama that I do and I enjoy it, but I was excited to step into something that felt different.” McClure added that she quite enjoyed walking in heels for the entirety of the series, for example.

McClure’s challenge was made trickier by the fact she has never suffered from insomnia – although “just a bad night...
