Fantastic Four | Fox’s calamitous 2015 film, a decade on
Image
As Marvel finds box office success with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, we take a look back at the 2015 film’s difficult production.

On the 6th August 2015, director Josh Trank dropped a bombshell. It was the day before the release of his comic book movie, Fantastic Four, but the filmmaker wasn’t in a celebratory mood.

“A year ago,” Trank wrote on Twitter, “I had a fantastic version of this. And it would have received great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though.”

It was the moment when the darkening mood behind the scenes burst into public view. Although anonymous stories about Fantastic Four’s troubled production had emerged in Hollywood outlets months earlier, Trank’s tweet was unprecedented – it was swiftly deleted, probably following irate calls from 20th Century Fox, but the damage was done. One analyst told TheWrap at the time that Trank’s...

The Green Lantern veteran also revealed a few details about the cyberpunk heist adaptation for Apple TV+ based on the book of the same name by William Gibson:

Neuromancer | Apple TV+ releases brief teaser for its forthcoming show
Image
Upcoming cyberpunk TV show Neuromancer has a huge reputation to live up to, and Apple TV+ given us a tiny glimpse at what to expect.

AppleTV+ has a rather good sci-fi selection already, but it’s in the process of adding another title to its library that is one of the foundational stories in futuristic fiction. Neuromancer is adapted from the book of the same name by William Gibson, and along with Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, is largely credited with birthing the cyberpunk genre.

Cyberpunk has continued to flourish in these past few years, not least because of CD Projekt Red’s enormously successful videogame, Cyberpunk 2077, itself adapted from a tabletop role-playing game that like Neuromancer and Blade Runner, launched in the 1980s. While Cdpr are also developing a Cyberpunk 2077 live action TV show along with Anonymous Content, it feels appropriate that Gibson’s seminal novel will arrive on our screens first,...

Neuromancer First Official Teaser Takes Us To A Familiar Location From William Gibson's Novel
Image
Welcome to the Chatsubo, cowboy.

To mark the 41st anniversary of William Gibson's Neuromancer hitting shelves, Apple TV+ has released the first teaser for its upcoming series adaptation of the Cyberpunk classic.

The promo doesn't show much, but we do get to walk through the doors of Bar Chatsubo, an establishment that should be very familiar to fans of Gibson's work.

Briana Middleton is set to play Molly Millions, and some recent set photos revealed that she looks pretty much exactly how the cyborg mercenary is described in the novels.

Molly, also known as Sally Shears and Rose Kolodny, was first introduced in Gibson's 1981 short story Johnny Mnemonic (which was adapted as a critically-lambasted 1995 movie starring Keanu Reeves) before going on to play a more significant role in the Sprawl Trilogy, Neuromancer (1984), Count Zero (1986), and Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988).

'Neuromancer' Gets First Look Teaser as Apple TV+ Series Enters Production
Image
Apple TV+ has released an exciting teaser for its highly anticipated Neuromancer adaptation, offering a first look at a key location from William Gibson's iconic 1984 sci-fi novel. The short clip was shared online on July 1, the same date that the book was published 41 years ago, to announce the start of production on the 10-episode cyberpunk series, which will arrive on the streaming service, courtesy of show creators Graham Roland and J.D. Dillard. Roland is acting as the showrunner, while Dillard is directing the pilot episode.

The 26-second video (shared below) tracks through a dark, empty bar that slowly starts to come to life. A pinball machine flickers on accompanied by gameplay sounds, triggering a domino effect across the room. Other lights turn on before a neon sign illuminates the space, revealing it as "Bar Chatsubo." The watering hole is a primary spot in the Neuromancer novel as it is...

After Decades in Development Hell, 'Neuromancer' Adaptation Takes a Giant Leap Forward at Apple TV+
Image
Over forty years after its source material was first published, Neuromanceris finally coming online. Apple TV+ announced that the long-awaited cyberpunk science fiction adaptation has entered production in a new teaser clip. No release date for the series has yet been announced. The series will be an adaptation of William Gibson's seminal 1984 novel, which essentially birthed the entire cyberpunk genre. Many attempts at adapting the novel for the screen have been made, but Apple, whose Macintosh personal computer was likewise first released in 1984, will be the first one to successfully crack the code.

In the teaser, a bar slowly comes to life, its lights and arcade machines switching on, before a neon sign buzzes to life, revealing that the bar is the Chatsubo, the Chiba City lounge that is a key location in the novel. It then announces that the series, which was first greenlit in early 2024, is now in production.

‘American Primeval’: Inside the ‘Pulsing, Scraping’ Sound Design
Image
Westerns require a certain snap, crackle and pop: the sound of a boot dragging on gravel, the jolt of a shotgun blast, the clip-clop of horse hooves. To make those noises and more for Netflix’s brutal miniseries “American Primeval,” nine-time Oscar-nominated sound designer Wylie Stateman and Emmy-nominated co-supervising sound editor Anne Jimkes-Root took their cues from director and

exec producer Peter Berg, whom they’ve worked with on previous projects including “Friday Night Lights,” “Lone Survivor” and “Painkiller.”

“Pete said, ‘I need this to feel raw; I need the [characters’] decisions to be immediate and in the moment,’” Stateman said. That sense of the visceral is of a piece with the unrelenting tone of “Primeval,” which tells the story of an East Coast mother, Sara (Betty Gilpin), and son, Devin (Preston Mota), who head west with taciturn mountain man Isaac (Taylor Kitsch) as their guide. They traverse hazardous terrain on...

Why Drew Goddard's Sinister Six Movie Was Canceled
Image
A little over a decade ago, Sony Pictures set out to grow the "Amazing Spider-Man" franchise into a whole cinematic universe. Beginning in 2012 with Marc Webb's reboot, which starred Academy Award-nominee Andrew Garfield as the titular webhead, the studio had ambitious expansion plans with the upcoming sequel as well as a slew of spinoff films that were in development. Although "The Amazing Spider-Man" didn't receive the most enthusiastic reception from critics and fans compared to Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire's "Spider-Man" a decade earlier, people were still interested to see what Webb and Garfield had in store for the sequel. It offered a chance for this new reboot to distinguish itself without having to follow the tried-and-true origin story again.

Unfortunately, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" was an overall disappointment. The film received mixed reviews, criticized for its messy tone and a script that reeked of studio interference. To be fair,...

'American Primeval' Season 2 Is Being Worked On, Reveals Director Peter Berg
Image
American Primeval, Netflix’s ultra-violent answer to Yellowstone, was released earlier this year as a six-episode limited series. For those who watched it, it appeared that the definitive nature of the bleak ending had sealed the show’s fate. However, according to series director Peter Berg, Netflix is considering bringing back the Western drama for Season 2. Spoilers ahead for the American Primeval finale.

During an interview with Esquire, Peter Berg (Deepwater Horizon) revealed that the filmmaker and the rest of the American Primeval crew are currently trying to figure out how to make Season 2. The series, which is set in 1857 in the Utah Territory, saw most of its main characters perish by the end of the six-episode season. However, as Berg notes, they are still interested in telling another story about the children that survived the cruelty of the wild west. This means that the show's creators have to lock...

Will Splashy Projects From Olivia Wilde, Cynthia Erivo and Harris Dickinson Help the Cannes Market Get Its Mojo Back?
Image
Todd Olsson will stop at nothing to get studios interested in his films.

To drum up interest in screenings of “Wardriver,” a Dane DeHaan crime thriller that Olsson’s company, Highland Film Group, is selling at Cannes, he channeled those hyperventilating tastemakers who have become ubiquitous on social media and shot a fake “review” of the film.

“This movie moves!” a very caffeinated Olsson exclaims in one of the parody TikTok videos he sent to potential buyers. “It’s got action, sex, cars and one of my favorite things — hacking into networks and stealing f–king money!”

Sign-ups for screenings of “Wardriver” surged.

“We acted like complete imbeciles and made asses of ourselves in order to get people to pay attention and somehow it worked,” says Olsson, who serves as Highland’s president of international sales. “Maybe it’s the magic of TikTok, but people seem to pay attention to...

One Of The Best (And Most Underrated) Superhero Movies Of The 2010s Is Taking Over Max
Image
It's always nice to see a decent movie faring well on streaming services. Most streamers' charts are typically populated by some of the most questionable "content" you're ever likely to encounter on your journey through the streaming sphere, but there are still some standouts that crop up from time to time. Case in point: "Chronicle."

This 2012 superhero origin story/sci-fi thriller/teen drama caused a minor stir upon its debut for presenting an original take on the superhero genre using a found-footage approach. The film also put stars Dane DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan on the map and established director Josh Trank as one of the most promising young filmmakers of the time. Sadly, his next film, 2015's "Fantastic Four", proved to be a box office flop that put Trank in director jail, but "Chronicle" remains a well-respected directorial debut.

The film follows three Seattle high school seniors: DeHaan's Andrew,...

Property of 20th Century Studios

Helmed by Josh Trank in his directorial debut, Chronicle is a multi-genre film, featuring superhero, sci-fi, found footage and psychological elements. The 20th Century Fox movie centers around popular Seattle high school senior Steve Montgomery (Jordan), alongside friends Andrew Detmer (Dane Dehaan) and Matt Garetty (Alex Russell), as they form a bond after gaining telekinetic...

The 5 Best Michael B. Jordan Movies, Ranked
Image
Michael B. Jordan has returned to movie theater screens this week with “Sinners,” the new movie from “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler. Jordan stars in the film as Smoke and Stack, a pair of twin brothers who find themselves fending off a vampire attack one unlucky night. His dual roles in “Sinners” represent yet another instance of Jordan testing his limits onscreen. That’s not surprising to see from an actor who has already pushed himself to try on the roles of action hero, inspirational real-life figure and even director in recent years.

Jordan has, in other words, accomplished a lot over the course of his 20+ year career. Here are the five best films he has starred in, ranked.

Neuromancer: Briana Middleton Dons A New Costume As Molly Millions In Latest Set Photos
Image
We recently got our first look at Graham Roland and J. D. Dillard's upcoming streaming adaptation of William Gibson's Cyberpunk classic, Neuromancer, via some revealing set photos featuring Briana Middleton as Molly Millions, and we now have another look at the actress sporting a very different costume.

Millions is a ruthless, but honourable "razorgirl" (street samurai) with augmented reflexes and cybernetic implants, including razor-sharp retractable blades underneath her fingernails and vision-enhancing mirrored lenses covering her eye-sockets.

So far, Middleton is the only main cast member to be spotted on set, but other photos have revealed some background actors in various Cyberpunk-inspired outfits.

Green Goblin is Coming Back- Spider-Man: Brand New Day Reported Plot Sounds So Good It Can Solve Kevin Feige’s Biggest Problem in MCU
Image
Tom Holland’s return to the MCU is officially titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The fourth film in the franchise has finally received its title and a release date of July 31, 2026. The film will see what happened to Peter Parker after the world, including his best friends, forgot his identity, and he restarted his life as a vigilante without all the tech.

The subtitle Brand New Day is derived from the comic book storyline of the same name. The comic also saw a world where reality had changed for Peter, and many of the things had reversed. Apart from the return of the Green Goblin, the storyline also hints at the state of the Daily Bugle and introduces a villain who might just be what Sadie Sink is playing.

Green Goblin might be in Spider-Man: Brand New Day if it follows the comics A still from Spider-Man: No Way Home...

Neuromancer: Apple TV’s William Gibson adaptation adds Dane DeHaan
Image
Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. Versions of a feature film adaptation have passed through the hands of directors like music video maker Chris Cunningham, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob‘s Chuck Russell, Torque‘s Joseph Kahn, Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali, and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller. An adaptation of Neuromancer is currently moving forward as a 10-episode series that’s set up at Apple TV+, and Deadline reports that Dane DeHaan of Oppenheimer and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has signed on to play a character named Peter Riviera.

In the source material, Peter Riviera was “a thief and sadist who can project holographic images.” Which sounds like a great character for Dane DeHaan to play.

"Really Surreal, Really Weird, But So Great": Christopher Nolan Complimented 1 Oppenheimer Star's Performance Despite Very Limited Role
Image
Oppenheimer actor Jack Quaid recalls the surprising complement he got from Christopher Nolan, despite his limited role. Hitting theaters in 2023, Nolan's World War II historical epic about J. Robert Oppenheimer's creation of the first atomic bomb was a massive hit both critically and commercially, with Cillian Murphy playing the titular theoretical physicist. Oppenheimer features a star-studded cast to bring its abundance of historical figures to life, with Quaid, who is well known for starring in The Boys and a new action comedy called Novocaine (2024), playing a small role as real-life scientist Richard Feynman.

In a recent interview with Men's Health, Quaid looks back on his time filming Oppenheimer, revealing that Nolan gave him a unique complement for his bongo-playing performance during a scene set at Christmas. Quaid features sparingly in the scene in question, but the director still took the time to tell the actor that he was "impressed.

Netflix' Best Western Created One of 2025's Most Tragic Love Stories (& It's Not the One Fans Think)
Image
Quick LinksWho Was American Primeval's Jacob Pratt? What Happened to Jacob and Abish?

The following contains spoilers for American Primeval, now streaming on Netlflix. It also contains a mention of suicide.

With Westerns like Yellowstone reigniting the genre for TV, Netflix decided to take things in a raw and unadulterated direction. The streamer achieves this with the shockingly gory American Primeval, which focuses on the 1850s and the Utah War.

The series depicts American soldiers, the Mormons and Natives battling for territory. Along the way, the show maps out one of the most tragic love stories of its genre. But it's not the one fans think is on top of the list. It's a darker story, focusing on Dane DeHaan's Jacob Pratt and his wife, Abish.

We Are Glad These 3 Actors Turned Down Playing a Marvel Villain in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Trilogy
Image
Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy saw quite a few villains—both good and bad—played by some of the renowned actors in the industry. The greatest villain of all would be the psychotic Green Goblin, who made the first Spider-Man film memorable for generations of viewers. Willem Dafoe’s unhinged performance in the film played a huge role in the success of such a villain.

Dafoe was popularly known to audiences as the character actor who controversially played Jesus in Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ. Interestingly, he was chosen for the role over three other famous actors, which will be surprising for fans. However, it is hard to imagine anyone other than Dafoe in the role now.

Before Willem Dafoe, these 3 actors were initially considered for Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man...

A 2017 Sci-Fi Flop Is A Massive Streaming Hit On Max
Image
A major box office disappointment is experiencing a small reprieve on the Max streaming service after its disastrous 2017 debut. "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" was written and directed by Luc Besson, and is an adaptation of the French comic series "Valérian and Laureline," by writer Pierre Christin and illustrator Jean-Claude Mézières. It stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as special operatives tasked with maintaining order throughout space for the human race. While there is plenty of sci-fi spectacle on display in "Valerian," there's also a love story at the heart of the film, with Valerian chasing his sidekick despite her consistent refusal to indulge his romantic desires. After the pair are dispatched to the intergalactic city of Alpha, they uncover a dark threat to the city and must work together to save both Alpha and the rest of the universe.

Clearly a passion project for Besson, who...

Valerian Cast & Character Guide: Where You've Seen The Actors Before
Image
Content Warning: The following article contains mention of rape.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets may not be the most well-known movie, but the Valerian cast is certainly stacked with A-list talent. Based on the French science fiction comic series Valérian and Laureline and released in 2017, the movie takes place in the 28th century and centers on two operatives, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are tasked with traveling to the peaceful Alpha, the City of a Thousand Planets, to complete a mission. However, when an unknown force threatens the future of the entire universe, Valerian and Laureline must race against time to stop them.

Valerian had a hefty budget of over $177 million (via Box Office Mojo) and has the distinction of being both the most expensive independent movie and European movie ever made. Unfortunately, Valerian failed to make a splash at the box office, grossing just over $225 million worldwide,...

This American Primeval Storyline Offers The Darkest Possible Remake Of A John Wayne Classic
Image
Warning: Major spoilers for American Primeval below!A key American Primeval subplot offers an unofficial remake of classic John Wayne Western The Searchers. Netflix's American Primeval is being noted for its unvarnished look at the Old West, and what a grimy, violent, and bleak era it was. Its depiction of the West is a far cry from the Westerns of John Wayne, who was the leading star in the genre from the 1930s to his final film in 1976. Wayne's "Oaters" tended to feature good guys versus bad guys, with no sex, blood or foul language present - which is the opposite approach to American Primeval.

One of Wayne's darkest roles came with The Searchers, where he plays bitter, racist Civil War vet Ethan Edwards, who spends years trying to find his missing niece. Debbie was taken by the Comanche and is later found to have joined the tribe and...
