Bobby Moynihan, Chris Parnell Shoot Indie Movie in Trailer for Mockumentary ‘Micro Budget’ (Exclusive)
Image
The trailer for the mockumentary film Micro Budget features an array of notable comedy stars and launches ahead of the project’s festival debut later this month.

The Hollywood Reporter’s exclusive first look at the promo teases the comedy feature from director and co-writer Morgan Evans. Brandon Micheal Hall, Bobby Moynihan, Chris Parnell and Patrick Noth star in Micro Budget, which centers on clueless father-to-be Terry (Noth), who moves with his pregnant wife to Los Angeles to shoot a low-budget disaster movie that he aims to sell to a streaming service for a big profit.

Rounding out the cast are Maria Bamford, Mike Mitchell, Neil Casey, Emilea Wilson, Nichole Sakura, Jordan Rock, Jon Gabrus and Hal Linden.

“I read about this Paranormal Activity guy,” Hall’s character explains in the trailer. “He made that movie for like nothing, and then he sold it for a bajillion dollars. So I said,...

Bobby Moynihan, Chris Parnell & Maria Bamford Star In Morgan Evans’ Comedy Feature ‘Micro Budget’
Image
Exclusive: Micro Budget is a comedy feature about an aspiring director who recklessly moves himself and his nine-months-pregnant actress wife from Iowa to LA to shoot a low-budget indie movie and sell it to a streamer for a “fuck-ton of money”. Sound familiar?

Saturday Night Live alum Bobby Moynihan and Chris Parnell and Lady Dynamite’s Maria Bamford star in the film, which is the debut feature from Morgan Evans, who wrote animated feature Merry Little Batman for Amazon/MGM.

Newcomers Emilea Wilson (Alternatino With Arturo Castro) and Patrick Noth (The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show) also star.

The film centers on Terry Terrison (Noth), who plays the director, Documented by his cousin Devin’s (Evans) behind-the-scenes camera crew, Terry finds that the only thing standing between himself and his dream is, well, himself. The mockumentary skewers the world of show-business and the depths some maniacal auteurs will sink to in pursuit of their vision.

Aimee Mann’s ‘Suicide Is Murder’ music video: Salute to Oscar and BAFTA nominees could win her Grammys [Watch]
Image
Four years after the release of her Grammy-winning album “Mental Illness,” Aimee Mann has shared a new single, the stirring, beautiful waltz “Suicide Is Murder,” from her forthcoming 10th solo album “Queens of the Summer Hotel.” The accompanying music video reunites Mann with actor James Urbaniak, who previously starred in the video for Mann’s “Patient Zero” with Bradley Whitford. Watch the “Suicide Is Murder” music video above.

Some shots may seem eerily familiar as the video nods to lauded films of the 1960s and 1970s. Rob Hatch-Miller, who co-directed the video with Puloma Basu, took to Twitter to highlight some of their inspirations. The video’s final shot draws on the Oscar-nominated “The Sterile Cuckoo,” which earned bids for Best Actress Liza Minnelli and Best Original Song. The haunting shot of Mann’s female specter walking the halls of a house in...

Other Music Review
Image
For its legion of fans, Other Music was more than just another independent record store. Trading for over two decades, the renowned New York premises achieved something approaching mystic status as the go-to shop for music lovers. Situated across the street from Tower Records, the David and Goliath gamble paid off handsomely, and Other Music proved to be a huge success, also pulling in its fair share of high-profile fans.

Right from the bat, this warm and diverting documentary is a bittersweet exploration of the store. The film’s opening – shot a few days following Other Music’s closure in 2016 – finds a trumpet-heavy procession heading down a busy Manhattan street, a banner with the store’s logo proudly displayed upfront. This could certainly be read as a eulogy, but it’s also a heartfelt celebration of a community and cultural hub eroded by gentrification and the digital revolution.

Directing duo...

Opened in 1995 directly across from Tower Records on East 4th Street street in lower Manhattan, Other Music was more than just a record store. Image
Distributor pivoted after coronavirus pandemic forced theatre closures.

Films released via Oscilloscope Laboratories’ virtual cinema initiative have generated more than $200,000 since the company reconfigured its distribution plans when the coronavirus pandemic forced theatres to close.

O-Scope kicked off its virtual cinema programme with The Avalon venue in Washington DC on March 16 as soon as it became clear theatre closures would endure for a while.

Other Music Documentary to Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival
While the words “legendary” and “record store” may fall together a bit oddly for some, one that truly lived up to the billing was New York’s Other Music, which closed in June of 2016 after more than 20 years in business. Renowned for the kind of fringe and hard-to-find and next-big-thing music that its name suggests — this writer (who eulogized the store at the time of its closing) bought the first Strokes Ep there on consignment in 2000 — the store was known and revered by music-heads all over the world; it was the epicenter of several local scenes, its employees included members of Animal Collective, Anti-Pop Consortium and multiple DJs and future industry executives.

Next month, a Kickstarter-funded documentary on the store is set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, which takes place from April 24 through May 5. The film, directed by Rob Hatch-Miller and Puloma Basu, has been in the...
