How ‘Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado’ Strengthens Colombia’s Position as a World-Class Shooting Destination
Image
Being home for a new, fresh take on the legacy of one of the most iconic children’s shows of the 21st century is no small feat, but Colombia was ready to take on the challenge when it came to Paramount+’s “Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado.”

Shot in Colombia over 53 days between July and September of last year, with production services provided by leading local company Tis Studios, Alberto Belli’s “Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado” employed 401 Colombians as part of the crew. The film also had Colombian actors as key members of the cast, including Maria Cecilia Botero as Abuela, Oscar Rodriguez as Tio Nico, Valentina Acosta as Maria Elena and George Slebi as Papa Cole.

Created in 2000 by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh Valdes and Eric Weiner — and produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio — “Dora the Explorer” famously broke the fourth wall to include children...

Exploring ‘Dora’: How Paramount+’s ‘Search for Sol Dorado’ Expands on 25 Years of Nickelodeon History
Image
“Swiper, no swiping.” “Oh, man!” “¡Hola, soy Dora!” “Backpack, Backpack.” “We did it!” “If there’s a place you gotta get, I can get you there, I bet. I’m the map!”

These are phrases burned into many a mind across multiple generations, as “Dora the Explorer” celebrates its 25th anniversary. There’s the target Millennial and Gen Z audience of the original animated “Dora” series on Nickelodeon, their Boomer parents who overheard it, and now the Gen Alpha and Gen Beta kids watching the CGI-animated reboot “Dora” on streamer Paramount+.

The classic “Dora” quotes are sure to resurface this week as new live-action movie “Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado” debuts on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ Wednesday and brings the nostalgia for the series up to 11. And that’s exactly what Nickelodeon and its parent company Paramount Global are counting on, especially at a time when so much is uncertain in the entertainment landscape,...

How Old & Tall Is Dora The Explorer?
Image
Dora's age varied in different series, starting as a 7-year-old in the original and aging up to 10 in the sequel. Dora's height is a mystery, with speculations from a meme placing her between 5'1'' to 5'2'', but likely around 4 feet tall. In the live-action movie, Dora ages up to a teenager at 16 years old and is portrayed taller than in the cartoons.

Dora The Explorer is one of Nickelodeons best-loved shows, but the question of "how tall and how old is Dora" isn't easy to answer. Co-created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh Valdes, and Eric Weiner, the long-running series began back in 2000 when the original Dora The Explorer cartoon started airing on Nickelodeon. Since then, its spawned video games and books, a number of toy lines and several international versions alongside a sequel series and a live-action movie that have seen young Dora age somewhat.

As with...

Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss Review: The Pointless Search for Happiness
Image
If you think about it, it's a bit odd that people value happiness so much, elevating it to this almost mythical status — "The pursuit of happiness;" "I just want you to be happy;" "Don't worry, be happy." This is bizarre and paradoxically unhealthy for a variety of reasons. While words are semantically subjective, 'happiness' is an emotion, and emotions are essentially ephemeral. Rooting for one above all the others creates a life out of balance, to somehow reference both Pixar's Inside Out and the film Koyaanisqatsi.

Happiness runs contrary to contemporary society and existence as a whole on this autophagous world. We have hedonic adaptation, meaning that we get used to good things but not to bad things, which is hopelessly depressing when you really think about it. Modern culture has also numbed us to most of the things which have historically brought happiness and meaning to individuals. The...

Eric Weiner’s ‘Deadly Detention’ Turns ‘The Breakfast Club’ into a Bloody Slasher [Buried in a Book]
Image
Trapping characters in a single location makes for a compelling story. And having everyone be strangers certainly helps rack up conflict and drama as well. Sure, it’s an overworked formula at this point, but the results are undeniable. Eric Weiner, a ghostwriter for Fear Street Sagas, gave the recipe a whirl in his 1994 book Deadly Detention. He was clearly inspired by one of the most seminal examples of these “bottle” tales, The Breakfast Club, but unlike John Hughes’ benchmark of teen movies, the characters in this story aren’t mired in expectations or concerned with social constructs. No, these young detainees are running from a more tangible threat — one hoping to keep them in school forever.

The book begins with the six main characters reporting to their disciplinary destination, classroom 301 at Harrison High School. For a few hours on this ill-fated afternoon, these unlucky students belong to Mr. Lance Crowley.

Nd/Nf Review: Giraffe Takes a Melancholic Look at a Changing Denmark
Like Jia Zhangke’s Still Life, Giraffe is a fiction sketched around the margins of an infrastructure project, capturing impressions of life and landscape in a place across which the state will soon sweep like a hand across a countertop. Instead of Still Life’s Three Gorges Dam, which juxtaposed the epic scope of the Ccp’s ambition against the worker ants carrying the project out or being washed away in its wake, Giraffe’s Danish director Anna Sofie Hartmann tells a prototypical EU story of technocratic consensus and its faint, localized counterweight of regret over dying tradition.

To get to Copenhagen from the European mainland, a lot of people take ferry that leaves from Puttgarden in Germany and arrives in Rødby, on the island of Lolland. This route will soon be replaced by the Fehrman Belt Fixed Link, an 11-mile road and rail tunnel—the longest in the world...

Dora the Explorer live-action movie scheduled for a Summer 2019 release
Author: Zehra Phelan

Paramount Pictures have added another film to their ever-growing release schedule, announcing on Monday that the live-action adventure Dora the Explorer has been given an August 2nd, 2019 release date.

Live-Action Dora the Explorer Movie Gets Summer 2019 Release Date
Paramount Pictures has set an August 2, 2019 release date for their Dora the Explorer live-action movie adaptation. As of now, the movie will only be going up against an untitled "event film" from Warner Bros., while also being situated between Universal's Fast & Furious spin-off and Paramount's new Terminator movie on July 26, 2010, and Disney's Artemis Fowl and Universal's new Quentin Tarantino movie on August 9, 2019. There is no word yet on when production is supposed to begin at this time.

Paramount first announced the Dora the Explorer movie back in October 2015, when Puss in Boots writer Tom Wheeler was set by the studio to write both this movie, and a Micronauts adaptation. There was little to no movement on the project until this past October, when the studio brought in Nick Stoller to write the script for this adaptation, for producer Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes producing partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller.

Ashton Kutcher in Jobs (2013)
The Book of Job(s) For Religious Nones
Ashton Kutcher in Jobs (2013)
(Rns) The new movie about Steve Jobs is short on anything explicitly religious. Like its main character, however, it’s got a thread of transcendence running through it.

The truth about Jobs and religion may be that, in this arena as in others, he was ahead of the cutting edge.

The film isn’t making the purists happy, in part because it takes too many liberties with history. But it’s not a documentary. I’ll go against many of the reviews and say that Ashton Kutcher does a pretty good job at representing the personality found in Jobs’ speeches and in what has been written about Jobs — particularly in the massive authorized biography by Walter Isaacson.

One quote in that book, from one of Jobs’ old girlfriends, pretty much captures the character in the film: “He was an enlightened being who was cruel,” she told Isaacson. “That’s a strange combination.
