However, only a few good movies have succeeded with this aim, one of which is the recent Alice, Darling. This 2022 movie from Mary Nighy covers all the bases it needed to, and then some it's heartbreaking, raw, grounded, and thought-provoking. It's an educational film in a way, as viewers can question and see how abuse can come in different shapes and forms. Such a dark and real topic is always difficult to give justice to on a dramatized scope, but Alice, Darling made sure to handle it as carefully as possible without glamorization.

The hit Paramount Network series Yellowstone will soon be coming to an end, and while Kelly Reilly is expected to reprise the role of Beth Dutton on the follow-up series that’s now going by the title The Madison, she’s also making some time to star in the Sky Original crime thriller series Under Salt Marsh, which is expected to start filming later this year. According to an exclusive via Variety, Reilly will star as former detective turned teacher Jackie Ellis in Claire Oakley's new original series, Under Salt Marsh, a gripping thriller set in the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen. Split into six parts, the series sees Oakley co-write, direct, and executive produce the project under the banner of Little Door Productions, with Jonathan Harbottle and Nikita Lalwani co-writing and Mary Nighy directing episodes 3 and 4. There is no one correct way to direct a movie. Most filmmakers nowadays shoot loads of coverage -- i.e. all of the footage necessary to effectively cut the movie together in post-production. This approach gives directors a variety of options in the edit to shape each scene to their liking. Other filmmakers know precisely what they want each day they show up on set, and shoot only what they need to piece together the scene as they've imagined it (typically via storyboard).

If not guided by an ominous score and a remarkable lead performance of brittle, jittery anxiety, it might take you a third of Alice, Darling, a new film starring Anna Kendrick as a woman in an emotionally abusive relationship, to realize something is wrong. Alice’s relationship with Simon (Charlie Carrick), a thirtysomething Toronto-based artist with a suave British accent, could seem innocuous on a clue-by-clue basis. In isolation, a “thinking of me?” text with a kissing face emoji, or the way he drapes his arm over her like a cape, or his chiding to raise her professional ambitions, could seem like affection. Seldom are scripts bold enough to ask and answer the question: Why does she stay? In these fictional depictions, the decision to leave a romantic partner who treats their significant other poorly seems like the most obvious choice in the world. Gone is the nail-biting and second-guessing mentality that comes with years of being told you're wrong, you're ungrateful.

No, we don't see suggestive smirks, positive interactions, or glimmers of flirtation between the abused and abuser that blur the lines between affection and controlling tactics. The men are bad news, and this spectacle-like take on domestic abuse disempowers the women characters in these relationships, chalking their situation up to poor judgment calls. Hair in showers, hair in lakes, hair in spirals, hair in hands. Camouflage and signal, sword and shield, of the body and off, not quite alive and not yet dead. A boundary. One of many.

A début feature for Mary Nighy, some shorts, some TV, some roles in front of the camera to her credit. A credible and compelling work, buoyed by strong performances from its cast but given further strength by several choices that ground this. Written by Alanna Francis, working with Mark Van De Ven as story editor as she did for 2019's similarly relationship focused The Rest Of Us, the film is a story sufficiently solid that at times I felt it might have been a stage play.

Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick has been in news since September, when her film “Alice, Darling” made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In a recent interview with People, Kendrick disclosed the reason as why she can connect with the film so much, which revolves around the story of a woman compelled to deal with a problematic relationship.

Kendrick told the magazine that her “personal experience with emotional abuse” was the prime reason behind her doing the film which she also executive produced.

The Oscar-nominated actress and star of “Alice, Darling,” which she also executive produces, has been quite transparent about her emotional connection with the new drama, which spotlights a psychologically abusive romantic relationship. Kendrick plays the titular Alice, who untangles herself from toxic partner Simon (Charlie Carrick) while on a weekend trip away with her friends (Kaniehtiio Horn and Wunmi Mosaku). Mary Nighy (“Industry”) makes her directorial debut with the feature, which premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival before hitting theaters this week.

Kendrick started the “Alice, Darling” press tour by detailing her own experience with emotional and psychological abuse by a former partner. The “Up in the Air” and “Pitch Perfect” alum credited “Alice, Darling” for helping her “normalize” the experience and act as a therapeutic way to process her grief and recovery.

As you catch up with the films featured in our best-of-2022 coverage, it’s time we turn our sights to January. While the first month of the year usually isn’t a treasure trove, there are plenty of worthwhile offerings if one digs deep enough. Featuring some 2022 awards qualifiers finally getting a proper release, a few genre delights, and more, check out our recommendations below.

11. When You Finish Saving the World (Jesse Eisenberg; Jan. 27)

In capturing tangled family dynamics, one wouldn’t be surprised if Eisenberg looked towards The Squid and the Whale, another one of his Sundance selections (albeit from some two decades ago), for inspiration. While there’s a similar lived-in feel courtesy Benjamin Loeb’s warm 16mm cinematography and a keen sense for awkward, fraught drama––including throwing around profanities at the family table––the script isn’t as polished or piercing as Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama.

Despite the unpredictability of the last few years, both in Hollywood and beyond, recent years have proven fruitful for female filmmakers. From winning the top awards at the starriest festivals to notching back to back Best Director Oscar winners (for the first time ever for Zhao and Jane Campion) and churning out big-time box office hits, women have been unquestionably on the rise.

Until, perhaps, now. As we do every year, IndieWire is looking ahead at the next two years of studio features directed by women to get a sense of who Hollywood is elevating in still-rarefied spaces. Getting the chance to helm a studio feature is, of course, not the golden ticket for any director.

But it’s hard to deny the power and prestige of directing a big-time movie released by a major studio, even in a world where streaming platforms are making significant inroads into the “blockbuster” space.
