Image
The rush of a high-octane battle or the blooming of young love, the anime world is so much more than just an obvious means of entertainment. As the famous saying goes, Anime is not for kids, and thats because when it comes to tackling social issues, anime shows are on a different level. Whether it's discussing the insinuations of being a social recluse or dealing with school bullying, some anime shows have gone the extra mile to highlight the graveness of such issues.

For instance, bullying is a reoccurring theme in most shows with high school settings; however, sometimes cruelty can go a long way in destroying someones life. For those who have the heart to watch, these anime have not only addressed this harrowing act but also offered viewers the strength to stand against it.

Oshi no Ko's Underdog Stories are Some of Its Strongest After All
Image
The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of Oshi no Ko, "Growth," now streaming on Hidive.

Recent episodes of Oshi no Ko focuses on Melt's insecurities and growth as an actor. Melt's honest underdog arc sets him apart from the drama of other main characters. Melt's character development aligns more with shonen protagonists in the anime industry, such as those in Bakuman and Zombie Land Saga.

Oshi no Ko is continuing a particular subtheme in its second season here in the Summer 2024 anime season. So far in the Tokyo Blade story arc, the narrative has been quite strong with characters like Aqua Hoshino, Kana Arima, and Akane Kurokawa taking center stage, literally and otherwise, but there is still room to explore other chraracters, too. Fans wouldn't call this an ensemble anime, but here and there, it pays off to see Oshi no Ko's world through the eyes of side characters like Melt Narushima the actor.

Oshi no Ko Season 2, Episode 7 Spoilers
Image
The following contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 7 of Oshi no Ko, "Sun."

Akane Kurokawa's flashback cements her as a shonen-style heroine, contrasting her with bitter, subversive Kana Arima. The professional and personal feud between Akane and Kana adds depth and contrast to Oshi no Ko's storytelling. Akane's episode makes her more likable, showcasing her as a good-hearted, driven character.

Episode 7 of the new season of Oshi no Ko, just like the episode before it, devotes all its screen time to a single character. While Episode 6 was a heartfelt underdog story starring the downtrodden actor Melt Narushima, Epiosde 7 makes Akane Kurokawa the star. It's true that most episodes of Oshi no Ko juggle a variety of characters and plot threads, and for good reason, but the show needs to dive more deeply into its main cast now and then. Now it's Akane's turn, and Episode 7 gets a lot of work done...

Oshi no Ko Season 2, Episode 7 Blends Shonen Rivalries With Seinen Deconstruction
Image
Shonen grit and subversive elements are finely balanced in Oshi no Ko Season 2. Akane and Kana's rivalry is intensifying, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown. Episode 7's pacing sets up Episode 8 for a satisfying resolution of the rivalry.

The following contains spoilers for Oshi no Ko Season 2, Episode 7, "Sun," now streaming on Hidive.

So far, Oshi no Ko Season 2 done a fine job balancing itself between several opposing and contrasting ideas. This season has some subversive elements like the first season did, revealing the ugly truth of the Japanese entertainment industry in the process while also having refreshingly honest, relatable underdog stories to tell that feel more like shnen than seinen. Episodes like this week's "Sun" manage to both glorify and deconstruct the idea of girls like Akane Kurokawa leaping right into the competitive entertainment industry.

The previous episode handled that balance fairly well with the downdtrodden amateur actor Melt Narushima,...

What Is The Best Martial Arts Anime?
Image
Anime, especially shonen battle anime, has always prided itself on its creative approach to combat. From the complex supernatural ability systems of the Fate series’ Servants to the David-and-Goliath-type showdowns of Attack on Titan, the anime medium adores coming up with unorthodox, over-the-top combat techniques and power scales. However, the series that come to mind first when thinking of the most mesmerizing face-offs in anime are usually much more grounded and reliant on skill over sheer strength.

The traditional combat practices of martial arts, from the ancient Shuai Jiao to still popular boxing and karate, are disciplines of focus, diligence, and perseverance. Their unique and multifaceted merits make for truly engrossing combat in anime. More realistic and intimate than any overpowered supernatural showdowns, martial arts anime is responsible for some of the best exemplars of action in the medium.

10 Anime Husbandos Who Don't Have A Romance Arc
Image
Though some great anime husbandos don't receive their happily ever after, those loveless husbandos still find a place in the hearts of fans. Many factors go into crafting a great husband – they must be attractive with a personality that would support a good romance. Not every anime fan shares the same criteria for what would make an ideal partner.

Some fan favorite husbandos may be surprising, but are understandable upon deeper thought. For instance, a kuudere like Loid Forger may seem too cold to be an ideal husbando on paper, but many fans like that he's careful and thoughtful. Unfortunately, fans don't always get to see their favorite husbandos in a romantic setting. Though they love them all the same, they've definitely been robbed of many swoon-worthy moments.

The Best Pre 2000s Anime, Ranked
Image
Anime continues to reach new heights thanks to modern achievements like Tokyo Revengers, Demon Slayer, and Spy x Family, but the current slate of top content wouldn’t be where it is today without the decades of development that preceded it.

Post-2000s anime have plenty of advantages and insight that would have previously been impossible. However, an anime doesn’t need to be new in order to achieve mainstream success and there is no shortage of pre-2000s series that continually expire the next generation. There’s a lot to love when it comes to the older anime or a past generation.

In 2118, the Japanese government has enforced a mandatory system known as Sibyl, which uses software to analyze the criminal tendencies and capability of the general public. When the chief inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department Akane (Kana Hanazawa) investigates the mysterious death of a professor, she finds research papers that could shake the existing system to the core. Along with some unexpected allies, Akane sets out in search of the truth — even if it means confronting life-threatening obstacles along the way.

Back in 2013, Psycho-pass was merely the latest anime series to gain public traction. Ten years later, a franchise comprised of episodes, films, and sub-series has created a long-standing fanbase that only wants more from its favourite characters. 15 Worst Couples In Shonen Anime, Ranked
Image
Romance often plays a big part in all anime, and that includes shonen. While the genre normally places a greater focus on action, many shonen series still have a healthy dose of romance thrown in. In fact, the genre is home to some of anime's most iconic couples. Of course, not all shonen romances are successful, and many are even downright awful.

Since romance and character-driven storylines aren't normally shonen's strong points, many couples within the genre feel bland, forced, or even toxic. As a result, shonen couples often miss the mark and leave fans underwhelmed. With poor execution and a lack of chemistry, these couples are some of the worst of the genre and don't live up to fans' expectations.

Anime Review: Psycho-pass: Providence (2023) by Naoyoshi Shiotani
Image
As I have mentioned in the past, the “Psycho-Pass” franchise is probably the closest thing we have in the combination of contextual depth and intricate action that the masterful “Ghost in the Shell” first brought in the world of anime, at least until Netflix got its hands on it. The fact is quite eloquently presented in the “Psycho-Pass 3” line, of which “Psycho-pass: Providence” is the latest entry, set in January 2118, two months after the ending of “Sinners of the System” and near three years before “Psycho-Pass 3”, thus providing the missing link between the two.

“Psycho-pass: Providence” arrives in theaters on Friday, July 14 in North America, courtesy of Crunchyroll

For those not familiar with the main premise of the series, the story takes place in a future Japan that has secluded itself from other countries due to its food autarky. The Sibyl System has taken over the judicial sector, by actively measuring the populace's mental states,...

Shonen Jump Just Roasted Jujutsu Kaisen Ahead of Season 2
Image
Warning! Contains spoilers for Akane-banashi Chapter 55!Ahead of the upcoming second season of Jujutsu Kaisen, one other Shonen Jump manga is lampooning it in a hilarious way. That series is Akane-banashi by Yuki Suenaga and Takamasa Moue, which follows a young girl named Akane as she becomes a professional Rakugoka, a skilled performer of a classical Japanese comedy style. Akane-banashi is known for reinventing Shonen Jump tropes, which is why it's such a perfect vessel to lightly parody its own contemporaries. Being based around comedy, it makes sense that the series would excel at parody, but that doesn't make its Jujutsu Kaisen parody any less hilarious.

Chapter 55 of Akane-banashi, translated by Stephen Paul, features Akane going to a Rakugo competition judged by Ikken Arakawa, a legendary Rakugoka who is also an actor. He appears in the show "Yin-Yang Cops", which is currently in its Kyoto Calamity arc. This fake show...

German Open quarters: Chinese shuttler Wang Zhiyi regrets losing points too fast against Yamaguchi
Image
Germany, March 11 (Ians) Top-seeded Akane Yamaguchi from Japan outplayed China’s fifth seed Wang Zhiyi here to secure the women’s singles semifinal spot at Bwf 2023 Yonex German Open.

Yamaguchi smashed an overwhelming 16-2 run at the beginning of the third game against Wang and finally won the match 21-18, 16-21, 21-14, reports Xinhua.

“I was losing points so quickly during the third game. That’s definitely not like what I expected,” said 22-year-old Wang.

After the match, Wang holds a 3-3 record against Yamaguchi, but lost the recent three matches.

“We were very close in the previous encounters. I didn’t win the game because of the key points, the details or the momentum. But this time, Akane led the scores so many that I couldn’t press her anymore,” Wang said.

Speaking of Paris 2024, the Tokyo Olympics contender said it will take a lot of competitions to win the qualifications.

Power Rangers Villains Are Pathetic Next to Their Dark Anime Counterpart
Image
The Power Rangers may be some of the most familiar Kaiju-fighting heroes out there, but they're far from the only ones. The anime series Ssss.Gridman takes the core concept of a Kaiju-creating villain to a radical new extreme unlike any villain the Rangers themselves have had to face.

Ssss.Gridman is actually a part of the Ultraman franchise, another tokusatsu series from Japan that shares a lot of similarities with Power Rangers and its Japanese Super Sentai counterparts. While Ultraman is traditionally live action like Power Rangers, Ssss.Gridman is an anime adaptation of a fairly underappreciated branch of the franchise from the 90s, known as Hyper Agent Gridman. The story revolves around a handful of high schoolers in a bizarre world that's attacked by Kaiju frequently, yet no one ever remembers the attacks--or anyone who died in them.
