From medieval clashes to modern infantry showdowns, these conflicts have been a popular topic of on-screen narratives for decades. Sometimes, these shows reflect the sacrifice of previous generations. But often, they -- like many of the greatest war films of all time -- serve to highlight the horrors and futility of war. 

Either way, these war series don't scrimp on the emotional side of things, not just focusing on actual battle sequences (although we often get plenty of that), but the more intimate ramifications of individuals whose countries are at war. And although the majority of these popular series are, naturally, dramas with a heavy action leaning, there are also a surprising number of sitcoms about war, which frequently use gallows humor or surreal comedy to showcase the inherent absurdity of these conflicts.

Charlotte Cardin and her album 99 Nights lead the nominations for the 2024 Juno Awards, Canada’s version of the Grammys, which were announced on Tuesday.

The Montreal pop singer, who was the big winner at the 2022 Junos where she picked up four trophies, will compete this year for best single, best album, best artist, best songwriter, best pop album and in the Fan Choice category.

Grammy winner Daniel Caesar and Nicholas Durocher, also known as Talk, follow Cardin with five nominations each for the 53rd edition of Canada’s music awards to be handed out on March 24 in Halifax. The ceremony will be hosted by Nelly Furtado.

Caesar and Durocher will both compete in the best single and best album of the year categories against Cardin. Other Canadian artists with three nominations each include Allison Russell, Aysanabee, Connor Price, Dvbbs, Lauren Spencer Smith and Tate McRae.

MrBeast was the big winner at the 2023 Streamy Awards on Sunday night.

MrBeast (real name Jimmy Donaldson) won two awards out of the five he was nominated for: creator of the year and collaboration for his rock, paper, scissors video with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “Surprised he didn’t pick rock every time.”

Kai Cenat won streamer of the year, with show of the year going to Michelle Khare’s “Challenge Accepted” and the international prize going to Spain’s ibai. Chris Olsen was named as the shortform winner.

Other well-known figures who won this year include Jonas Brothers, winners of the crossover category; Logan Paul, who won the creator product prize; Jay Shetty, who won for his On Purpose podcast; and TikToker Dylan Mulvaney, the trans influencer who found herself caught up in controversy after she starred in a Bud Light social media promotion, who won the breakout creator award.

The 2023 Streamy Awards take place on Sunday, August 27 at the Fairmont Century Plaza but, as always, you can watch the ceremony from the comfort of your couch. Internet sensation MatPat hosts the 13th annual event, and he promises to “put [his] own twist on things this time.”

Connor Price has been in the spotlight for a long time.

It would be easy to dismiss Rama Rau’s first non-documentary feature Honey Bee as another melodramatically grim look at the consequences of sex trafficking in North America because it does utilize a lot of narrative convenience as far as driving the plot towards its endgame. Doing so, however, would discount the reason why Bonnie Fairweather and Kathleen Hepburn’s script works this way and why the resulting message is more important than the journey to get there. The whole point of portraying young Natalie’s (Julia Sarah Stone) plight is to provide an example for how the cycle of abuse can be broken. It’s not about piling on the tragedy or sweeping her trauma under the rug for some unrealistic rebirth in the aftermath. It’s about growing, healing, and hope.

The decision to therefore bookend the film with scenes at truck stops is crucial. We must witness...

As if to illustrate the hypothetical “So you think you’re having a bad day?,” Canadian thriller “Hammer” puts its characters through a Rube Goldbergian obstacle course of peril in the immediate hours after a hijacked drug deal. The pileup of disasters is such that this tale might easily have been spun as some kind of grotesque comedy. But .

The result isn’t a knockout, falling between the territories of crime meller and family drama without quite maximizing either element. But it works well enough in that middle ground, making for a succinct, well-crafted suspense exercise likely to satisfy most home viewers who find it via digital and VOD release as of June 5.

Will Patton’s usual authority is a big plus in the role of Stephen Davis, a working-class father who exudes a quietly firm if put-upon fortitude in a household it’s hinted has known too much strife.

It’s easy to tell someone we’ll do anything for family when it’s what we’re supposed to say. That’s the expectation. That’s normalcy. And the majority of us never have to test those words anyway. We don’t all weigh the risk to our lives by donating an organ or financial security by re-mortgaging a home. But those acts do loom above us. So does tough love. “You want to live under our roof? Then abide by our rules.” Enforcing that line is where things get hard because it hurts to put the group above any individual. It just might be the first step to their salvation, though, since you’re neither giving up nor closing the door on a return. You’re simply doing what you think is right and necessary.

Writer/director Christian Sparkes knows such a decision isn’t without regret, however.

Prodigal sons, tough fathers, and the extreme situations that bring them back together once more are nothing new onscreen. It’s a tried and true dramatic formula. Hammer is the latest to give it a shot, crafting a film that mixes drama elements with thriller moments to try and craft something a bit different. Unfortunately, despite a nice performance from Will Patton, the ultimate impact left by the project is far less than you would expect. The ingredients are here for something fairly moving and easily effective, but the folks involved can’t quite pull it off. The movie is a crime tale, mixing dramatic and thriller elements, in telling the story of a father and son. The event will open with The Imitation Game on October 8 and now has set David Ayer’s Fury as the capper on October 19. The pic stars Brad Pitt, Shia Labeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, and Jon Bernthal. Pitt and Ayer are confirmed to attend the closing-night festivities in Leicester Square with screenings to be simulcast to cinemas across the UK. Syfy's version of UK hit "Being Human" gets better and better, and with Season 4 kicking off soon, we have some new promo photos, an update on which supporting characters are returning, and a look at what the roommates use when their wild nights come back to haunt them.

Since last summer's San Diego Comic-Con roundtable interviews, we've known that during the 13-episode Season 4 we'll be seeing returning guest stars Katharine Isabelle (Suzanna), Amy Aquino (Donna), Mark Pellegrino (Bishop), Kyle Schmid (Henry), Connor Price (Kenny), and Deanna Russo (Kat).

Included with the press materials that accompanied the "Roommate Survival Kit" that arrived at the DC offices over the weekend were two more names: Jesse Rath as Sally's brother, Robbie, and Sarah Allen as Rebecca, Aidan's tragic love interest in Season 1. (As an aside... Yay! This writer has been a big fan of Allen since the beginning.)

The Season 3 finale of "Being Human" airs tonight on Syfy, and one of its stars, Meaghan Rath, and guest star Amy Aquino sat down for a chat about what we can expect in the episode, entitled "Ruh Roh," and shared lots of other info from the show.

Q: What can you tell us about what we have to look forward to in the final episode?

Meaghan Rath: I think it's pretty obvious to everybody that things are coming to a head right now, especially for Sally. She's made this decision that she's going to let herself die and decompose. And she's forced to go through Donna's door and face her. So there's a big showdown. And more people are involved than you think. A lot of people are involved.

Q: In the finale are we going to see some new things popping up to possibly carry us into the next season?...

A lot of genre TV series have let us down lately, but one that came through this season with flying colors is "Being Human" on Syfy. So we're anxious to watch the finale, "Ruh Roh," but also sad to see it end. Here are the first four minutes.
