While Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, the new Disney Pinocchio remake failed to understand the key message of the original. The Italian fantasy story was meant to teach children relevant life lessons, mainly about being honest — with others and oneself. The 1940s Disney classic stuck closely to the roots of the original story. This new live-action remake, like so many others that came before it, is a bland interpretation of what it once was.

The live-action Pinocchio started off strong with a vibrant cast including Tom Hanks as Geppetto, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, and Luke Evans as The Coachman — along with so many others. While the film had some elements that were new and interesting, they didn’t add to the original message of the story. Fabiana the puppeteer girl, played by Kyanne Carthy, was a new and refreshing addition to the story.

When caught in that perennial dilemma of going head-to-head with an identical-sounding movie (meteor threatens planet; volcano threatens city; Truman Capote makes friends), it’s probably comforting when a filmmaker can tell himself his competitor is a nobody whose film won’t be a real concern. What you don’t want is for the other movie to be made by Guillermo del Toro — especially when the subject is one the Mexican auteur was practically born to interpret.

But Robert Zemeckis’ live action/CG hybrid version of Pinocchio wouldn’t be in a great spot even without a second ambitious adaptation coming soon. A well-intentioned work that largely falls flat, it arrives today as just another widget in Disney’s “remake ’em all!” agenda, one whose pedigree offered the hope of something better. Even when experimenting with the latest new-fangled technology, Robert Zemeckis is, at heart, a storyteller of the classical variety. While some recent gambles (The Walk and Welcome to Marwen) didn’t match the high marks of Flight and Allied, they still exuded a peculiar attraction, wondering what made the director precisely interested in pursuing these stories in the first place. Coming off his Zaslav tax write-off The Witches, a familiar yet entertaining remake, he once again goes to the well of cinematic refurbishing for Pinocchio. As the third of four adaptations of Carlo Collodi’s story in recent years, unlike the oddities that make up much of his recent career, the curiosity surrounding this project mostly has to do with why Zemeckis felt the urge to revisit the material. Unfortunately, by film’s end, an answer isn’t any clearer.

As the Summer box office slowly begins to cool off, it may be time for another entry in one of Hollywood’s most lucrative franchises. Now, we’ve got to wait a few more weeks for the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, the much-anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Oh, but you’re very close as this new film is from another ‘branch” of this huge studio “Redwood”. Nope, not that “galaxy far, far away” either. This springs from the fountain that helped form the Disney dynasty. You see, when the MCU began its climb to multiplex majesty, other studios combed their libraries to cultivate their own “multiverse”. Why are filmmakers so enamored of “Pinocchio”?

Yes, Carlo Collodi’s 1883 tale touches on some timeless themes, like love, loss and lies. But its goal is to teach children by terrifying them. From a modern-day perspective, the concept is weird at best and creepy at worst.

So how come we’re still getting so many versions? There have been at least 65 adaptations, going all the way back to a silent version in 1911 and up to this year, where we have three more in 2022 alone. These variations are rarely successful, and yet new tellers are always convinced they’ve somehow cracked the code.

At this point, complaining about Disney’s deathless drive to cannibalize its entire library of animated classics into live-action remakes can feel as futile as complaining about capitalism itself. The studio has immense IP resources to exploit, a hungry well of content to fill, and a commercial imperative to introduce new generations of kids to the characters they’ll soon be expected to recognize on merch and in theme parks. Disney+’s upcoming live-action Pinocchio has just released a new trailer, poster, and photos ahead of the film’s September 8, 2022 (“Disney+ Day”) premiere. The new two-minute trailer shows the moment when the wooden toy surprises his dad, Geppetto, by walking, talking, and acting like a real boy. The second trailer also shows the start of Pinocchio’s adventures as he leaves the safety of Geppetto’s toy shop, heads to school, and winds up with Stromboli’s puppet show.

Such is the haunting question at the center of Disney+’s “Pinocchio,” premiering September 8. Co-written and directed by Academy Award winner Robert Zemeckis, the live-action/animated hybrid retelling of the beloved classic tale stars Tom Hanks as Geppetto and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the titular wooden doll who dreams of becoming a real boy.

Yet as “Honest” John (Keegan-Michael Key) lures Pinocchio, a talking puppet, into performing as the “eighth wonder of the world,” it’s up to Geppetto, the Blue Fairy (Cynthia Erivo), and Jiminy Cricket (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to guide the boy built with “no conscience.”

The global celebration of Disney+ Day will return on Thursday, September 8, 2022, leading into D23 Expo: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event presented by Visa in Anaheim, CA.

Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis are back together again.

The Oscar-winning “Forrest Gump” collaborators, who also made “Cast Away” and “The Polar Express” together, have reunited for a new take on “Pinocchio.” The project will stream on Disney+ later this year.

Disney has set the release date for its remake of classic tale “Pinocchio,” starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto, exclusively on Disney+.

The film, a live-action version of Disney’s 1940 animated classic, will premiere on Disney+ worldwide on Sept. 8, 2022. That’s timed for Disney+ Day, the Mouse House’s celebration of the streamer that it first produced last year. In addition to “Pinocchio,” Disney will announce more Disney+ Day premieres from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic “in the coming months,” the company said.
