Ari Aster is expanding the fictional town of Eddington into Queens, NY. The auteur is partnering with the Museum of the Moving Image to host the new film series “Eddington City Limits,” highlighting the features that inspired his acclaimed Covid-set Western.
Aster will be in attendance for two out of the five films that will screen; the program ranges from Robert Altman’s iconic “Nashville” to Lars von Trier’s beloved “Dogville.” The series is co-programmed by Aster and MoMI Senior Curator of Film Michael Koresky, and will take place from August 15 to 31. “Eddington” opens in theaters today, July 18.
As the description for the film series states, “Eddington City Limits” will include “movies that both directly inspired or echo the escalating madness of ‘Eddington,’ depicting powder-keg communities ready to spill over into violence or enclosed worlds so given to conspiracy and obsession that there’s no longer any sense of coherent reality.

With last weekend’s “super” domination at the multiplex by one big blockbuster, some filmgoers may be looking for a break from the usual escapist Summer cinematic offerings. Well, that “indie upstart” A24 is always ready to provide a diversion that’s truly “off the beaten path”. And the setting for this flick is “way off” that trail, as an acclaimed, somewhat eccentric filmmaker guides us into a dusty desert town that’s fraught with old feuds and frustrations. Plus, the early 2020 “climate” not only brings everyone there to a “boiling point”, but it may provide the ‘spark” that could ignite the “tinderbox town” of Eddington.
The village that has “seen better days” is in a remote part of New Mexico. The timeline of the tale is May 2020. In the opening scene, the town’s longtime sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) gets into a “dust-up” with two patrolmen from a...

In Eddington, Ari Aster’s latest doom spiral, the proposed building of a data center in nowhere New Mexico provides the catalyst for a long-overdue psychological breakdown. The man in question is Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix), whose perceived list of ills includes a worryingly online mother-in-law (Deirdre O’Connell), a disinterested, catatonic wife (Emma Stone), a woke mayor (Pedro Pascal) with plans to build a state of the art data centre, and the familiar inconveniences of Covid-19. Should even reading that word cause discomfort, it’s nothing if not intended: since rewiring the horror genre with A24, Aster has been repositioning himself as cinema’s patron saint of debilitating anxiety. When it comes to writer/director Ari Aster, the only thing that it seems movie fans can expect is to expect the unexpected. From Hereditary through Midsommar right up to Beau is Afraid, it’s hard to tell what the auteur is going to do. And that trend continues with his newest movie, Eddington.
Set in May of the year 2020 in the town of Eddington, New Mexico, Eddington finds the small community in the midst of a political struggle between the progressive mayor Ted Garcia (The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal) and the town’s conservative sheriff, Joe Cross. Since it’s an election year, and since Joe opposes every idea Ted has, Joe decides to run against him. The political discourse splits the town in half, and everyone’s secrets are about to be revealed.

Not for nothing does Eddington arrive with the tagline “Hindsight is 2020.” Ari Aster’s film looks back at the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic not with the clear vision afforded by retrospection, but from the bottom of the rift that America is still stuck in. It’s a fissure that, as Aster sees it, cracked wide open the moment that polarized politics, social and educational failings, and social media brain rot came up against a make-or-break crisis.
In early 2020, the fictional New Mexico town of Eddington is mandating social distance and masking rules, and much to the chagrin of its asthmatic sheriff, Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix), who thinks the concerns plaguing major metropolitan areas have no business intruding into the affairs of his one-horse burg. But Eddington isn’t as isolated from the problems of modernity as Joe believes. For one, a tech giant named solidgoldmagikarp, with the support...

Josh Trank got a lot of positive attention for his directorial debut, the 2012 found footage superhero movie Chronicle… then nearly destroyed his career with his follow-up, the disastrous 2015 Marvel Comics adaptation Fantastic Four. He came back with the 2020 biopic Capone, which went straight to VOD during the Covid lockdown. Now, Trank is in production on his fourth feature film, an independent horror thriller called Send a Scare, which has Robbie Amell (Code 8) and Victoria Justice (Depravity) in the lead roles. Noah Sacco, production and acquisitions executive at A24, delivered a few opening remarks ahead of the screening of Eddington, the latest film from writer-director Ari Aster. The event took place Thursday at the Directors Guild of America’s Theater One on Sunset Boulevard.
In his introduction, Sacco reflected on Aster’s history of bold choices, offering a glimpse of what audiences can expect from Eddington. His comments served as both a tribute to Aster’s unique vision and a subtle warning: prepare for something daring and unexpected.
“Whether it’s decapitating the protagonist [Hereditary in 2020] halfway through a movie or deeply upsetting pagan sex rituals [Midsommar in 2019] or giant penis monsters [Beau Is Afraid in 2023], it’s just always exciting and inspiring to watch someone challenge themselves as much as [Ari] does,” enthused Sacco, as he communicated his full confidence in the filmmaker’s vision and talent.

Emma Stone says she’s glad she got to rehearse with Joaquin Phoenix before making “Eddington.”
But she’s not always keen on rehearsal.
“We rehearsed. We went through everything,” Stone told me Thursday at the “Eddington” premiere at the DGA in West Hollywood. “Rehearsal is a little bit of mixed bag for me sometimes. Sometimes I really really enjoy it and sometimes I’m like, ‘Oh God we’re just doing it and it’s going to ruin everything,’ but this was one of the good ones.”
Ari Aster’s “Eddington” stars Phoenix as the sheriff of a small New Mexico town during the Covid pandemic who surprises everyone when he announces – including his wife, played by Stone – that he’s going to run for mayor against the incumbent (Pedro Pascal).

A24 has revealed the final trailer for the Eddington movie, the upcoming Western black comedy written and directed by Ari Aster. The film had its world premiere at the main competition of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 16.
Opening in theaters on July 18, the Eddington movie has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for strong violence, some grisly images, language, and graphic nudity.
From writer-director Ari Aster comes a modern Western and paranoid thriller set in the American Southwest during the tumultuous summer of 2020. Isolated and sheltered in place, in a global pandemic, a nation under pressure found itself sifting reality through the haze of social media and lost its collective mind.
Eddington stars Joaquin Phoenix as small-town sheriff Joe Cross, who runs for mayor when progressive incumbent Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) attempts to modernize their dusty hamlet by attracting a new artificial-intelligence data center.

Reteaming with Joaquin Phoenix after the divisive, impressively anxiety-inducing Beau Is Afraid, Ari Aster is back with his fourth feature. His western Eddington, which world-premiered in competition at Cannes, stars Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Cameron Mann, Matt Gomez Hidaka, and Amélie Hoeferle. Ari Aster would like you to go back in time. The writer-director of Hereditary and Midsommar doesn’t need you to travel too far. Just five years. You probably remember a few of the details from May 2020: social distancing, social-media diatribes, swabs being thrust violently into nasal cavities, “I Can’t Breathe,” uprisings in the streets. It’s crazy to think all of this took place half a decade ago. It’s even crazier to ignore the creeping sensation that we’re still trapped in the moment when social stress fractures became chasms,...

Did we all go completely nuts during those unsettlingly strange first months of Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, when cities became ghost towns and people thrust into isolation started gambling with their mental health by living online and buying whatever the social media echo chamber coughed up? That’s the assessment in Ari Aster’s Eddington, which views that collective national trauma through the microcosm of a fictitious New Mexico small town. Essentially a modern Western marbled with a vein of dark comedy, the movie is neither suspenseful nor funny enough to work as either. Mostly, it’s a distancing slog.
After the diabolically well-crafted classic horror of Hereditary and Midsommar, gifted writer-director Aster took a turn into more personal territory with the uneven Oedipal odyssey Beau Is Afraid, a tumble down a rabbit hole of neuroses full of striking nightmarish imagery and poignant confessional moments of crippled masculinity. Ari Aster made his Cannes Film Festival debut Friday with the world premiere of his latest psychological nightmare — this time a Western set in Covid times — on Friday. “Eddington” reunites the “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” filmmaker with the latter film’s Joaquin Phoenix. Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler also star.
Aster has become known as a master of the psychological horror genre following his breakout film “Hereditary,” an intense look at the consequences of inherited family trauma, in 2018. Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler have little to work with in this disappointing dud from the Hereditary and Midsommar director
Ari Aster now worryingly creates a losing streak with this bafflingly dull movie, a laborious and weirdly self-important satire which makes a heavy, flavourless meal of some uninteresting and unoriginal thoughts – on the Covid lockdown, online conspiracy theories, social polarisation, Black Lives Matter, liberal-white privilege and guns.
The movie looks good, courtesy of Darius Khondji’s cinematography, but has nothing new or dramatically vital to say, and moreover manages the extraordinary achievement of making Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix look like boring actors. This is by virtue of its moderate script and by the unvarying stolid pace over its hefty running time which might have suited a 12-episode streamer.

The movie centers on the conflict between small-town sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and local mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) in the fictional town of Eddington, New Mexico, but the first footage reveals that pressures from external factors will only intensify their personal and political standoff, including real-world issues such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.
The tagline that accompanied the trailer on social media read "Hindsight is 2020," referencing the tumultuous year that saw the onset of the global outbreak of the coronavirus disease and the widespread demonstrations protesting racial injustice and police brutality. "Of course, they keep looking at that lab in China. If you look at that lab in Wuhan," a voice narrates over the clips at the beginning of the trailer.

Ari Aster’s fourth film, Eddington, is set in May of 2020 and depicts a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) that, per distributor A24, “sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.” You wouldn’t know from its official logline that the film has any connection to the Covid-19 pandemic. Not so for the film’s first teaser, which depicts Phoenix’s character doomscrolling, as many of us did, during what appears to be lockdown.
Aster’s film, which will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month, also stars Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Cameron Mann, Matt Gomez Hidaka, and Amélie Hoeferle.

Ari Aster’s “Eddington” is already creating buzz, weeks before its Cannes premiere. Aster reunites with his “Beau Is Afraid” star Joaquin Phoenix for the secretive dark comedy. Per scarce plot details, Phoenix plays a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations, who gets into a conflict with the town mayor (Pedro Pascal). The film’s first teaser, below, situates us clearly in 2020 as Phoenix’s character doom-scrolls through images of 2020 involving Covid and Black Lives Matter protests.
Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Cameron Mann, Matt Gomez Hidaka, and Amélie Hoeferle also star in Aster’s fourth feature. When it comes to any TV show, some episodes are stronger than others. Silo season 2 certainly had a strong season, but how do the episodes hold up against each other?
This was a season set in two locations. We saw Juliette make it to Silo 17, learning that her own silo isn’t the only place on Earth, and that her people aren’t the only survivors. Meanwhile, a rebellion threatened to grow in Silo 18, as many in Mechanical believed that Juliette was alive and the air outside was safe.
There were some parts of the story that dragged, but by the end of the season, we were certainly left wanting more. Let’s rank the episodes from worst to best.
Cooper (Matt Gomez Hidaka) and Knox (Shane McRae) in Silo season 2. Image: Apple TV+. Silo season 2, episode 3
I do want to start this by saying that I don’t think there were any terrible episodes.

Quick Links Who Died in the Season 2 Finale of 'Silo'? Iain Glen Died Another Sacrificial Death in 'Game of Thrones' How His 'Silo' and 'Game of Thrones' Characters Compare
Through its two-season run so far, Silo has sadly seen several main character deaths. It started with Allison Becker (Rashida Jones), who sacrificed herself to prove what she thought was the truth. Then, it was George (Ferdinand Kingsley), whose death was the precursor to Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) looking into things at the silo. Deaths continued to abound in Season 1, including Holston Becker (David Oyelowo), Ruth Jahns (Geraldine James), and Sam Marnes (Will Patton).
This didn’t slow down in Season 2 as the body count continued with Judge Mary Meadows (Tanya Moodie), Terry Cooper (Matt Gomez Hidaka), and the latest season finale death that left fans reeling.

Sci-fi shows create unique circumstances where one or more scientific limitations in the present world have been broken. Some of the most bingeworthy sci-fi TV shows just dive into their worlds and provide exposition about the rules of their societies and the laws of nature in their universes. Not all shows go too deep with their lore, though, and some fun and lighthearted sci-fi shows are more invested in exploring the cool consequences of the sci-fi concept instead of focusing on how the sci-fi world works and how it came to be.
But, some sci-fi shows like to spend time on why their worlds came to be and focus on the mystery element of the science fiction. Some of the best British sci-fi shows of all time are all about the mysteries of the Universe. The characters try and figure out the various anomalies that made their world the way it is,...

In Apple TV+'s Silo, where most of the world's population has perished and the rest remain in an underground silo, most newcomers aren't exactly strangers. The exception is Steve Zahn's Solo, a reclusive man living in Silo 17 who Juliette meets on her journey outside Silo 18 in Season 2. Silo hasn't yet revealed much about Solo, keeping his storyline and importance to Juliette's journey a secret. But his one and only line in the official trailer is enough to show he's not a man to be crossed: "You try to open the door again, and I'm gonna kill you."

The more you lie to people, the more the lies unravel. That’s something Bernard needs to deal with in Silo season 2 episode 3. Meanwhile, Juliette just needs some answers.
Caution: This post contains Spoilers from Silo season 2 episode 3
We see in dystopian worlds that as leaders try to hold onto power, they end up causing a rebellion to happen. Bernard knows this is the case. The problem is the world that has been set up within the silo makes it impossible for him to share the truth.
It’s clear that he knows more than he is letting on. Judge Meadows also knows more considering she was once his shadow. She wishes she could forget that—and it does make me wonder why she hasn’t taken this memory loss pill that Sims mentions in the episode. I guess while she wants to forget, there’s a lot that she wants to remember.

The third episode of Apple TV+'s sci-fi show Silo is out now, and it's a doozy. The first season ended with a huge shake-up as Sheriff Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) left the titular undergound Silo and set out into the wider world, only to discover that it was a wasteland. By necessity, season 2 has had to take a lot of time to re-establish the chess board following those events. The first episode, "The Engineer," was all about Juliette's journey into a neighboring Silo, where she found the last survivor of a rebellion that caused the deaths of thousands. The second, "Order," caught us up with everyone Juliette left behind, showing how her home Silo was turning into a powder keg as people demanded answers and the powers-that-be manipulated events to keep things calm.
In "Solo," Silo is finally able to represent all these plotlines and more onscreen in one episode.

Silo had a strong start on Apple TV+, and out of the gate, the second season is just as enthralling. The sci-fi dystopian drama is based on the Hugh Howey set of novels, Wool, Shift, and Dust. The story follows a group of survivors who live in a community underground. The 144-level silo has a hierarchy just like the current world with the top brass on the upper levels and the menial workers down below. Everyone is warned that the outside is a vast wasteland and asking to go outside results in almost immediate death. A camera pointed outdoors proves just that, leaving residents fearful and obedient.
When an engineer from the lower level named Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) starts questioning and investigating to uncover the truth, however, the result is devastating when shes forced to go outside herself. But against all odds, she survives thanks to a very specific modification to her suit.
