Sony’s feature reboot from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson hit theaters over the weekend, landing in third place at the domestic box office with $12.7 million. Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers and Sarah Pidgeon round out the cast for the latest entry in the slasher franchise that kicked off with the original 1997 film of the same name.

A social media user’s post on Saturday asked fellow fans whether they thought Hewitt and Prinze — who reprise their roles from the original movie and its sequel — “filmed their scenes together” in the 2025 installment. “People are starting to notice the ‘cuts and separate shots,'” the post continued.

Like many teens, I was excited by the sudden revival of the teen slasher genre, spearheaded by Scream and its many sequels. The original film, made in 1997, was loosely based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same name, and was a slasher movie in the guise of a morality play – a group of numbskull teens run over a pedestrian and, a year later, are viciously bumped off one-by-one. The cosmic joke of the movie was that, yes, we were rooting for them to survive even if we knew, deep down, that they probably deserved it.

Back in November 2024, Deadline exclusively reported that the Summer I Turned Pretty star and the Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story actor had joined the cast of the slasher sequel.

However, when viewers see the film on the big screen, neither Tung nor Chavez will appear in the movie, despite having filmed scenes.

By the time “I Know What You Did Last Summer” came out in 1997, the slasher-movie genre was 25 years old, and everything that could be done to it had been done. It had arisen, from ragtag nightmares like “The Last House on the Left” (1972), out of the crude raw compost of the drive-in/grindhouse world of the early ’70s. It had shocked and scared and scandalized people. It had been raised to an unnerving level of Hitchcockian art in “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” (1974). It had been mainstreamed with “Halloween” (1978), then numbingly formulized with “Friday the 13th” and its sequels. It had been given a disturbing feminist spin in “I Spit on Your Grave” (1978). And then, in the ’80s, it became a knowingly flamboyant homicidal freak-show burlesque — with the “Nightmare on Elm Street” films, and with a hundred tacky extreme Z-movie knockoffs.

The novelty of “I Know What You Did Last Summer...

The art of art criticism — and yes, it is an art form, thank you for asking — demands that each critic understands themself, intimately and analytically, so that they also understand their own taste, and can explain their taste to others. It’s not enough to have an opinion. We must be confident that our opinion is an honest reflection of who we are and what we really care about, and be able to justify how we came to our conclusions about the art we critique … and ourselves.

It is with that in mind that I state, confidently, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” defies conventional ideas of what a “good” movie is. If it is a “good” movie it’s an incredibly daft one, with storytelling and characters that don’t pass the rudimentary smell test, no matter how witty and self-aware the rest of it is.

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer wants so desperately to be this franchise’s Scream (2022), but it’s a failure by comparison. I’d say act like you’ve been there, but the truth is, I Know What You Did Last Summer has never been on Scream’s level. The original has its fans, but I Still Know What You Did Last Summer feels like a worse version of Club Dread, and let’s not even acknowledge 2006’s unwatchable straight-to-video threequel. Director and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is tasked with rebooting a series that hasn’t been relevant since the late 90s, but she never finds a balance between nostalgia bait and revamped storytelling. It’s worth a few laughs, roasting how outlandish prior knowings of last summerses are, yet the experience is an overlong mess that frustrates far more than it delights.
