Before we started shooting L'aigle des mers (1940), I was trying to hold this powder keg on my shoulder. Errol Flynn came along and said, "Hey, kid. This is how you do it." That was really something.

The funniest thing is one night about midnight, they were calling me and saying, "Mr. Dixon, we're sending a car around for you." They got me dressed and to the studio and had me sit in a rumble seat in a car. They helped a girl get in beside me -- I had never seen her before -- and asked me to put my arm around her and embrace and kiss her. The cameras rolled, and after about five minutes they yelled "cut." To this day, I never knew the girl's name, and I never knew what picture it was in.

[Advice to young actors] Study, study, study. And don't go out to Hollywood expecting Mr. Goldwyn waiting with open arms. Play it cool, and never stop studying.
