Roar Uthaug is one of this generation’s most underrated genre filmmakers. The Norwegian filmmaker got started with short films (as many directors do) before making their feature debut with 2006’s Cold Prey, arguably the most effective international slasher movie of the entire century (even if I’m partial to the excess of Cold Prey 2). Just as Uthaug revitalized the slasher formula, 2015’s The Wave radically revamped what a disaster movie could be. The Wave is seriously tense stuff, and in our review, we even wrote, “The Wave is a modern-day masterpiece that succeeds in continuing to add huge momentum to Roar Uthaug’s already surging career.”
Naturally, Hollywood scooped Uthaug up, and he helmed 2018’s lackluster Tomb Raider reboot. Luckily, it was an outlier, since Uthaug subsequently helmed Troll, one of the best Netflix original movies of all time. Not just that. Troll is the most-watched Netflix movie not in English…...

The Monster Movie That Is A Must-Watch For Godzilla Fans(Photo Credit –Netflix)
If you thought you’d seen every version of a city-flattening creature stomping its way through terrified crowds, you have to think again. While Godzilla may be the undisputed king of kaiju, Netflix’s 2022 hit Troll, directed by Roar Uthaug, delivered a fresh twist by hauling Norway’s mythical giants out of folklore and into modern chaos. It’s the kind of film that Godzilla fans will instantly vibe with, thanks to its towering threat, intense destruction, and surprisingly emotional core. With a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film blended Nordic legend with blockbuster thrills, earning its place in the kaiju hall of fame. Now, with Troll 2 officially arriving December 1, 2025, there’s never been a better time to catch up on the original.

Vuelve el gigante que conquistó Netflix. © Netflix

Fans of kaiju movies are always on the lookout for new giant monster movies to make their day, and fortunately, this is a great time to follow this genre. Apart from Japan's steady output of amazing films like Takashi Yamazaki's sublime "Godzilla Minus One," other countries have been upping their game considerably in the last decades. Hollywood has long since recovered from Roland Emmerich's 1998 "Godzilla," which was so awful that Toho's "Godzilla: Final Wars" gave its hated monster a humiliating second death in a fight against the real Godzilla. Between Matt Reeves' "Cloverfield," Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim," and Legendary Pictures' ongoing MonsterVerse franchise, Tinseltown has been establishing itself as a reliable hotspot of kaiju entertainment, and in 2006, Korean director luminary Bong Joon Ho of "Parasite" and "Snowpiercer" fame put his own spin on the theme with one of the greatest monster movies ever made, "The Host.

This is not your latest musical “Trolls” franchise installment. In fact, it’s disturbingly far from it…
Following the 2022 Norwegian film “Troll,” Netflix is all-in on its own troll-based franchise, with “Troll 2” set to arrive on the streamer later this year. The films blend the mythical lore of trolls into a classic monster movie packaging. The original “Troll” film was the most-watched non-English film ever to be released on the platform at the time. The core characters of Nora, Andreas, and Kristoffer are all back for the sequel, as is director Roar Uthaug.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “When a dangerous new troll is awakened, unleashing devastation across Norway, beloved adventurers Nora, Andreas, and Captain Kris are thrust into their most perilous mission yet. To stop the creature’s ruthless rampage, they must enlist new allies and delve into the country’s ancient history, searching for answers. As...

Netflix has announced the creation of Troll 2, the sequel to its globally acclaimed Norwegian monster movie, which will be released in 2025. The news follows the original film’s success, which enthralled international audiences and broke streaming records.
The first Troll film, which aired in December 2022, was a watershed moment for Netflix. It grossed an incredible 103 million views and became the platform’s most-watched non-English language film. Roar Uthaug, who developed the concept over two decades, will return to direct the sequel.
The film will have a new ensemble cast, including Sara Khorami, Jon Ketil Johnsen, and Gard B. Eidsvold. While precise narrative details remain unknown, the original film’s idea revolved around a huge 150-foot troll rising in the Norwegian highlands and destroying the country’s capital.
“The first film deliberately left room for further exploration,” said producer Kristian Strand Sinkerud, who had previously hinted at a possible sequel.

Lara Croft, the iconic heroine of the Tomb Raider video games, has long been considered a feminist icon. Yet, the new series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, is the first time the games are being adapted by a female creator. Tomb Raider has been adapted into live-action movies three times in the past. Angeline Jolie was the first to portray the character on the big screen. The franchise was then given a big-screen reboot in 2018 when Alicia Vikander portrayed the updated iteration of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, directed by Roar Uthaug.

Netflix has reaffirmed its commitment to Scandinavian originals, on Thursday an upcoming slate of productions from Sweden, Norway and Denmark that, according to Jenny Stjernströmer Björk, VP of Nordic Content at the streamer, is Netflix’s “most diverse and ambitious to date.”
Netflix has commissioned more than a dozen new and returning Nordic series, with highlights including disaster drama La Palma, about a Norwegian family whose Canary Islands’ holiday is disrupted by a volcanic eruption; The Helicopter Heist, a dramatization of a daring real-life cash depot robbery in Sweden in 2009; and Danish mystery The Habitat, which follows the mysterious disappearance of a young Filipino au pair in an affluent Danish neighborhood.

Netflix is very close to crowning a new streaming champion and it's a very recent title. Under Paris, the 2024 French-language survival thriller from The Divide director Xavier Gens, now ranks second overall in all-time viewership on the streaming service's non-English movies chart with 99.9 million views to its name thus far. All it needs is another 3.1 million views to overtake Roar Uthaug's acclaimed Norwegian monster movie Troll for the top spot, which seems very doable given Gens's feature is only three months removed from its release. However, due to a difference in runtime, it's still a ways off from passing the leader in hours watched, Society of the Snow (239.7 million).

Under Paris ranks second on Netflix's all-time viewership list for non-English movies with 99.9 million views. The film needs 3.1 million views to overtake Troll as the most-watched non-English movie. Mixed reviews could affected Under Paris, but its environmental themes and excitement could propel it to the top spot.
Under Paris climbs Netflix's all-time viewership chart in an updated top two ranking. Co-written and directed by Xavier Gens, the French-language survival thriller follows a mourning marine biologist who must confront her tragic past in order to prevent a massacre in Paris after a giant shark emerges from the Seine. Brnice Bejo leads the Under Paris cast alongside La Lviant, Nassim Lyes, Anas Parello, Anne Marivin, Nagisa Morimoto, Aurelia Petit, and many more in supporting roles. When the movie premiered on Netflix, it was the most-watched movie across the platform globally, in any language, for two straight weeks.

Given their close-knit relationship as global entertainment industries, gaming and the movies have long had a symbiotic connection. Movie tie-in games, for instance, have been a popular feature in gaming for decades, with numerous short-form releases over the years attempting to distil linear, cinematic storylines into interactive ones — albeit with varying success.
A Brief History of Gaming and the Movies
Of course, it’s not been uncommon over the years for studios to churn out poor quality movie-tie in titles that barely represent the characters and narratives we’ve fallen for on the big screen. However, there have been some outright successes and unexpected releases in alternative gaming genres.

This holiday season’s release of Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is cause for celebration amongst slasher fans. It’s been a hot minute since mainstream horror audiences have been able to watch a wide-release slasher that feels gruesomely throwback *and* is based on a wholly original concept. Thanksgiving is a contemporary reinterpretation of cheesy 80s midnighters about masked killers and juicy, rubbery effects that hoists holiday horror back into the limelight. It’s also fair to speculate how Thanksgiving signals a possible shift in overall genre trends, but labeling Thanksgiving as the rebirth of the slasher subgenre is a bit misleading. Roth’s ooey-gooey ode to holiday horror with all the trimmings certainly sticks out in today’s horror landscape, but that’s only on surface-level evaluations.
Heck, it wasn’t even the only holiday-themed slasher in theaters this season.

Survival expert Hazen Audel breaks down a scene in 2018's Tomb Raider in which Alicia Vikander's Lara Croft pulls a wooden shard from her abdomen. Audel awards the scene a low accuracy grade of 3 out of 10, explaining that the best course of action would have been to keep the shard in the body and seek medical attention. A planned Tomb Raider sequel was scrapped due to a rights issue and Amazon is now rebooting the franchise, but Vikander's take on Croft showed promise and was deserving of further exploration.
