Did You Know Braveheart 2 Came Out In 2020? It's Not What You'd Expect
Image
Robert the Bruce was released in 2020, an unofficial Braveheart 2 that continues the story in an unexpected way. While Braveheart ended with the death of William Wallace, the sequel picks up with another actor from the original movie in the main role. Angus Macfadyen reprises his role as Robert from the critically acclaimed 1995 epic, in the earlier moments of Roberts life before the final battle of Bannockburn. Where Braveheart follows the life of Gibson's William Wallace, Robert the Bruce follows the life of Macfadyens downtrodden Robert before his rise as king.

Similar to Mel Gibson's Braveheart, which the star also directed, Robert the Bruce was written for the screen by Macfadyen alongside writer Eric Belgau. Although not a direct sequel to Braveheart, Robert the Bruce operates as a sequel in its own right as it details Scotlands ongoing war with England as they fight for their independence. Both films...

Isaiah Mustafa
Murder at Yellowstone City Review: A Character-Driven Western Murder Mystery
Isaiah Mustafa
Nobody in the Montana Territory circa 1881 watches a former slave like Cicero (Isaiah Mustafa) walk into town without keen interest. That goes for friends and foes alike. Luckily for him, Yellowstone City is a progressive settlement in many ways. It has its fair share of racists and bigots to be sure, but you can’t help feeling heartened as far as seeing a saloon owned by a gay couple (Richard Dreyfuss’ Edgar and John Ales’ Mickey) who act as fathers to wayward souls like the young Dakota native working the stables (Tanaya Beatty’s Violet) or the Latina den mother of their brothel (Aimee Garcia’s Isabel). If anyone is willing to open their doors to Cicero, these are the folks. But they’re not the only ones drinking today.

Director Richard Gray and screenwriter Eric Belgau’s Murder at Yellowstone City takes pains to ensure everyone is at attention this Sunday.

‘Murder at Yellowstone City’ Review: A Well-Crafted Mix of Traditional Western and Murder Mystery Elements
Image
The first tip-off is the title: “Murder at Yellowstone City” is not your standard-issue shoot-’em-up. Rather, director Richard Gray’s well-crafted and handsomely mounted indie is as much a solidly constructed mystery as it is it a conventionally satisfying oater, with much to recommend to fans of either genre who rarely get to sample such a mix. Indeed, outside of Henry Hathaway’s “Five Card Stud” (1968) and the lamentably short-lived 2003 TV series “Peacemakers,” it’s hard to recall many other scenarios that suggest what might have resulted had Zane Grey and Agatha Christie bellied up to the bar and swapped ideas.

Only gradually does it emerge that Thomas Jane’s Thaddeus Murphy is the sagebrush sleuth of the piece, as his character — prodded by Anna Camp as Alice, his astute wife and partner — demonstrates surprising pathological skills while attempting to prove the innocence of a suspected killer. Surprising, that is,...

‘Murder At Yellowstone City’ Is A Forgettable, No Fuss Western [Review]
Image
“Truth” and “justice” are noble ideals to fight for, clear enough in their meaning to give a story some purpose, and malleable sufficient for one-dimensional characters to masticate under the illusion of gravitas. Try as he might, screenwriter Eric Belgau’s earnestly articulated thematic intentions for “Murder At Yellowstone City” are immediately undone by its title. This meat and potatoes western delivers what’s promised on the box and nothing more.

Robert The Bruce – Review
Angus Macfadyen
Angus Macfadyen as Robert the Bruce, in the historical drama Robert The Bruce. Photo courtesy of Screen Media.

Robert The Bruce is a historical drama that follows up on Braveheart, Mel Gibson’s epic about William Wallace, about the contender for the Scottish throne who finally won Scotland its independence and became its king. A legendary figure in Scottish history, Robert the Bruce was a great king, one known for his great heart and his devotion to his people.

This sequel of sorts to Braveheart stars Angus Macfadyen, who played Robert the Bruce in that film, and is being released video-on-demand on various platforms starting April 24. The film has no connection to Mel Gibson or his film beyond the subject matter, and Angus Macfadyen, but it would be natural to expect this historical follow-up to also be an epic, filled battles and the sweep of history, in the style of Gibson’s film,...

Mel Gibson in Braveheart (1995)
“Robert The Bruce” Never Brings The Past To Life
Mel Gibson in Braveheart (1995)
Historical epics are a dime a dozen. Even on an independent budget, they litter the cinematic landscape. So, there needs to be something for one of these efforts to distinguish themselves with. In the case of Robert the Bruce, it’s an attempt to pick up where Braveheart left off. Other films like Outlaw King have tried a similar approach with the character, to varying degrees of success. Here, the result is a bit of a letdown, as the singular focus doesn’t serve the title character well. Now on Digital, it’s an option for those of you who dig these sorts of period pieces, but it’s unlikely to satisfy your craving. The results just aren’t really there for this project. The movie is a period piece/historical epic, centered on the title character, Robert the Bruce (Angus Macfadyen). Specifically, it covers the time after William Wallace’s victories depicted in Braveheart,...

Angus Macfadyen in Robert the Bruce (2019)
‘Robert the Bruce’ Review: Angus Macfadyen Reprises His ‘Braveheart’ Role for a Flat and Unfocused Sequel
Angus Macfadyen in Robert the Bruce (2019)
The best thing about “Robert the Bruce” — that finds Angus Macfadyen reprising his role from that Oscar-winning epic — is that it doesn’t find a role for Mel Gibson. Alas, the worst thing about this generic follow-up is that it almost makes you wish that it had.

Despite forsaking the massive scale and maniacal egotism of Gibson’s blockbuster in favor of something a bit more life-sized and contained (read: cheaper), Richard Gray’s medieval family melodrama could use some of the dick-swinging bellicosity that “Braveheart” kept under its kilt. It could use some of that movie’s fire and bloodlust, and maybe even a smidgen of the smirking charm that allowed Gibson to leverage the First War of Scottish Independence into a vanity project for the ages. It could use any kind of animating force whatsoever.

Mel Gibson in Braveheart (1995)

Braveheart Actor Angus Macfadyen Reprises His Role as Robert The Bruce in New Movie
Looks like we are getting a new historical action drama based on the Scottish warrior Robert The Bruce. The film is called Robert The Bruce and stars Angus Macfadyen, who reprises his role from Mel Gibson’s classic movie Braveheart.

Chris Pine recently took on the role in the Netflix film Outlaw King, which was pretty good. This new film “explores the lost months during a long, harsh winter when Robert, injured and pursued across the Highlands by his enemies, takes shelter with the steely Morag and her fearless children. Restored to health and spurred on by this humble family’s resilience and courage, Bruce finally finds the resolve to rally his people and lead his country to hard-fought independence.”

I love that after all these years Macfadyen is playing this character again and this is what he had to say in a statement:

“Robert the Bruce rose from the...
