One of the most prolific passing quarterbacks in Bowdoin College's (Brunswick, Maine) storied athletic history. Hayes played football for the Polar Bears and holds records for Career Passing Yards, Passing Touchdowns in a Season, Career Passing Touchdowns, and Longest Pass Completion.

He was named after noted actress Helen Hayes, who was married to playwright-screenwriter Charles MacArthur.
