As a running back for The Ohio State University, he became the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy Award (1974, 1975).

Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

Played for the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals (1976-1982) and USFL's Jacksonville Bulls (1985).

Inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.

Since 1999, the Touchdown Club of Columbus, Ohio has presented annually the Archie Griffin Award, which signifies "college football's most valuable player for the entire season".
