Manchester United are set to make their first big summer signing come the opening of the transfer window. Memphis Depay has reportedly signed a deal worth £25-30 million with the Red Devils (subject to a medical) and looks certain to rejoin former national-team mentor Louis Van Gaal for the 2015/16 Premier League season.
This surely must be seen as fantastic news for United and a warning to their rivals, given the incredible potential of the Psv star. There are few clubs that polarise opinion like Manchester United. Love them or loathe them, you can never ignore them. United have been one of the biggest clubs in the world for decades and are one of the best supported clubs in the world.
Naturally, a club of United’s stature are nearly always linked with players from all over the world.

Tottenham Hotspur have spent a hell of a lot of money in recent years.
Despite not achieving an awful lot (one trophy and one Champions League campaign since the turn of the millennium), Spurs are amongst the Premier League’s big spenders – although it should be pointed out that, thanks to their equally prolific selling, their net spend is nowhere near as high as the majority of the bigger teams in the Premier League.
That said, that doesn’t change the fact that their outgoings on player purchases has been extremely high and, as a result, they’ve had some very productive and high-performance professionals at White Hart Lane – but they’ve also had their fair share of expensive flops.

This is a relatively new development, given that just 20 years ago, when the division first began in 1992, only a total of 13 players from outside the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland made appearances during the league’s first round of fixtures.
