10 Things Man Utd Fans Need To Know About Memphis Depay
Dmitry Lovetsky/AP

Manchester United are set to make their first big summer signing come the opening of the transfer window. Memphis Depay has reportedly signed a deal worth £25-30 million with the Red Devils (subject to a medical) and looks certain to rejoin former national-team mentor Louis Van Gaal for the 2015/16 Premier League season.

This surely must be seen as fantastic news for United and a warning to their rivals, given the incredible potential of the Psv star. An explosive winger with great pace and strength, Depay caught the eye of many top European clubs with his cameos from the bench in the 2014 World Cup, before proving his ability with a stellar Eredivisie campaign this year.

Although the signs all seem promising, United know better than anyone the impossibility of predicting just how well an incoming player will do in the Premier League pressure cooker. Just look at Juan Sebastian Veron,...

10 World-Class Players You Didn’t Know Man Utd Nearly Signed
Nigel French/Empics Sport

There are few clubs that polarise opinion like Manchester United. Love them or loathe them, you can never ignore them. United have been one of the biggest clubs in the world for decades and are one of the best supported clubs in the world.

Naturally, a club of United’s stature are nearly always linked with players from all over the world.

For a club that has always looked to its youth ranks for talent, United have never been shy of bringing in star players. Even back in the 1960’s George Best and Bobby Charlton, graduates from the youth team were joined by Denis Law, whose transfer from Torino was a British record.

Fast-forward to the Alex Ferguson era, and the like of Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, the Nevilles and Nicky Butt found themselves rubbing shoulders with Eric Cantona, Juan Sebastian Veron and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

However,...

10 Most Expensive Spurs Transfer Flops
Martin Rickett/Pa Archive/Press Association Images

Tottenham Hotspur have spent a hell of a lot of money in recent years.

Despite not achieving an awful lot (one trophy and one Champions League campaign since the turn of the millennium), Spurs are amongst the Premier League’s big spenders – although it should be pointed out that, thanks to their equally prolific selling, their net spend is nowhere near as high as the majority of the bigger teams in the Premier League.

That said, that doesn’t change the fact that their outgoings on player purchases has been extremely high and, as a result, they’ve had some very productive and high-performance professionals at White Hart Lane – but they’ve also had their fair share of expensive flops.

Moving to a big club in England is never necessarily easy – not even for those players who are supposedly amongst the best in the world (ask Andrei Shevchenko,...

10 Players Who Probably Regret Joining Spurs
Adam Davy/Empics Sport

Failing to deliver the goods in football is an unfortunate reality for certain players, and it’s something that’s hard to shake off once you’re stuck in a downward spiral.

Many players have come and gone throughout world football, some arriving at the biggest clubs in the hope that they would cement their names in the history books, only to see everything slip away from under their feet, and followers of the Barclays Premier League will know this all too well.

Andriy Shevchenko, Robinho and Juan Sebastian Veron are amongst the unlucky few in recent times to have crashed and burned – unable to cope with gigantic transfer fees. Despite arriving for Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United respectively, for a combined £91.9 million, those three showcase exactly how misguided the transfer market can make even some of the most astute deal-makers in world football. Their...

10 Most Expensive Man Utd Transfer Flops In History
Phil Noble/Pa Archive/Press Association Images

As one of England’s most successful football clubs, Manchester United have always chased the biggest and best players in the game, regardless of the price tag.

In 2001, we set the British transfer record to sign Juan Sebastian Veron, while more recently, we broke our club transfer record in landing Juan Mata from Chelsea for a cool £37 million.

But not all of the club’s huge transfer outlays have proved successful. While players such as Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo have graced the Theatre of Dreams, more than a few hopefuls have instead endured nightmares, at both their own, and our expense.

Though United have always seemingly had money to burn, many promising stars have seen their playing careers go up in smoke when attempting to live up to their occasionally-eye-watering transfer value.

And here, What Culture! takes a look at some recent...

Man Utd Transfers: Fergie’s 10 Greatest Foreign Imports
Every year, the global popularity of football becomes more and more apparent as an ever increasing number of foreign players come to ply their trade in the English Premier League.

This is a relatively new development, given that just 20 years ago, when the division first began in 1992, only a total of 13 players from outside the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland made appearances during the league’s first round of fixtures.

Manchester United’s first non-domestic player was an Italian, Carlo Sartori, who made his debut for the club in 1968, the year that the club conquered Europe for the first time. Until 1992, however, he was one of only eight players from abroad to call Old Trafford home.

Since 1992, the club has utilised its scouting networks and success to attract some of the world’s greatest players to the city of Manchester, but to this day the core of the team still remains British,...
