The four screenplays, selected via a blind reading process by industry insiders, are How I Learned to Die by Manya Glassman, Mandingo by Terrance Daye, Punter by Jason Adam Maselle and Sweetwater by Cassidy Batiz.

Prominent filmmakers whose work was included on past editions of the Purple List, now in its 14th year, include Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals), Judas and the Black Messiah‘s Shaka King, Cathy Yan (Succession, Dead Pigs, Birds of Prey), Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behavior, The Miseducation of Cameron Post) and The Starling Girl’s Laurel Parmet.

Nineteen of the 58 scripts showcased in past editions of the list, founded by alumni Ashim Bhalla and Shandor Garrison and faculty member John Tintori in 2012, have been turned into finished feature films.

Second Annual Nyu Purple List Announced
Last year, in order to spotlight the talents emerging from Nyu’s graduate film program, students Ash Bhalla and Shandor Garrison created the Purple List, the university’s answer to the Blacklist. The notable success of the 2012 Purple List was Shaka King’s stoner comedy Newlyweeds, which premiered this January at Sundance and was picked up for distribution by Phase 4 Films. The 2013 list was announced this morning, and was chosen by a panel of judges including Sundance Labs’ Rachel Chanoff, Ifp’s Amy Dotson, actor Peter Dinklage, filmmaker Karyn Kusama and cinematographer Andrij Parekh. The scripts honored by the 2013 Purple …...

The Purple List Showcases Nyu’s Best Unproduced Student Screenplays
We’ve already got the The Black List, which highlights Hollywood’s top unproduced screenplays as voted on by those in the business. In an effort to dig deeper for more independent hidden talent, New York University has recently announced The Purple List, showcasing the top production ready feature screenplays written by students or recent alums of the Grad Film Program.

As voted on by a number of people in the industry, such as Jodie Foster, John Sayles and Karyn Kusama, could the below be the next Sin Nombre, Pariah, Circumstance or Gun Hill Road? Check out the list, which was founded by thesis students Ash Bhalla and Shandor Garrison. There is more on their official site, via indieWIRE, who also provide a quote from Nyu Grad Film Creative Director Spike Lee:

“The movie industry has long taken notice of the talent that comes out of Nyu Grad Film,...

The Indie 'Black List'? Nyu Announces 'Purple List' of Best Unproduced Student Screenplays
Jodie Foster
Graduating film school doesn't necessarily guarantee a break into the industry. But as a way to boost its students' profiles, New York University has announced the creation of the Nyu Purple List, their own annual version of Hollywood's Black List of unproduced screenplays. Chosen by a panel including actress-director Jodie Foster, writer-director John Sayles, writer-director Karyn Kusama and other industry professionals, the screenplays on the Purple List are production-ready or in pre-production and seeking financing. Different judges will be selected every year for the panel. The Purple List was created by graduate film students Ash Bhalla and Shandor Garrison. "There’s finance available for independent films but there’s a disconnect between emerging filmmakers and financiers," said Bhalla, “Filtering projects and giving them industry credibility pushes these scripts to the top of the stack." “The movie industry...

Tribeca 2011: Short Film Round-Up 1
Despite being in the online age of video, it seems the short film is still somewhat neglected when it comes to a proper outlet, so today I'll be shining the spotlight on a handful of the 60 short films playing at this year's Tribeca, many of them from some fine regional talents. Selection films will also be available to watch online through Tribeca's website.Shandor Garrison's Nightlife chronicles an evening in New York City, when two teens from very different sides of town strike up a friendship. The performances from Adam Soto and Olivia Whelan are nice and nuanced; they are lonely youth who just need to know that they matter to another, even if just for a few fleeting hours. Garrison as writer and director...

Tribeca Film Festival unveils short films line-up, includes Ian McKellen, David Duchovny, Joseph Fiennes
Organisers of the Tribeca Film Festival have announced this year's line-up of 60 short films, 22 of which are world premieres.

The international festival was founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, producer Jane Rosenthal and real-estate investor Craig Hatkoff to help revitalise Manhattan's Tribeca neighbourhood following the 9/11 terrorist attack.

The 2011 event - presented by founding sponsor American Express - will run from April 20 to May 1. The 60 shorts represent 21 countries, including the UK, and feature stars from around the globe.

In a new development this year, the recipient of the Tff Best Narrative Short award will qualify for consideration in the Short Films category of the Oscars without the standard theatrical run, provided the film otherwise complies with Academy rules.

The short film program, drawn from 2,862 submissions, will be presented in eight thematic programs, which are detailed below.

There is a broad spectrum of styles and storytelling, from zombies taking over Manhattan to the humanitarian effort in Haiti.
