‘Beatles ’64’ director David Tedeschi on working with Martin Scorsese to create something ‘that has never been seen before’
Image
There's been no shortage of material about the Beatles, perhaps the most heavily documented musical group in history. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr's earth-shattering appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 has been recounted in many films and TV specials, most famously Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night, so what more could possibly be said about the iconic moment? For David Tedeschi, director of Beatles '64, there was a lot of meat left on the bone.

As Tedeschi tells Gold Derby, "the seed of the idea was this extraordinary footage" shot by legendary documentarians David and Albert Maysles "which had never really been given its due." The footage "only covered about two-and-a-half weeks of time," documenting the group's first trip to America. "It was a very short trip, but it felt momentous. We thought with this extraordinary footage it could be the beginning of...

The Beatles – A Four Film Cinematic Event taps Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan & Jack Thorne as writers for the Sam Mendes movies
Jez Butterworth in Nadia (2001)
According to Deadline, Jez Butterworth (Ford v Ferrari), Peter Straughan (Conclave), and Jack Thorne (Adolescence) have been tapped to write The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event, directed by Sam Mendes. It remains unclear whether each writer will be responsible for a separate film or if they will collaborate across all four installments.

Sam Mendes’ production company, Neal Street Productions, has partnered with Sony Pictures Entertainment for the movies. This is the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and the members of the Beatles—Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison—have granted the full life story and music rights for a scripted movie. Mendes will direct all four movies, each focusing on a separate band member.

The four films will star Harris Dickinson (Babygirl) as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) as Ringo Starr, Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) as Paul McCartney and Joseph Quinn (The Fantastic Four: First Steps...

This Is the Only Song Monty Python’s Eric Idle Wrote With George Harrison
Image
Monty Python is commonly referred to as the “Beatles of comedy” — or are The Beatles the Monty Python of music? In any case, the two groups did overlap to some extent, thanks to Python fan George Harrison, who famously befriended the comedians and financed Monty Python’s Life of Brian when no other studio would.

The Python member who was most tight with Harrison was Eric Idle. Idle even credited the former Beatle for saving his life and lifting him out of a depression.

Play

Recently, a fan asked Idle on social media whether or not he ever considered working on a musical project with Harrison. Idle noted that, in addition to collaborating on Life of Brian, he also directed two music videos for Harrison, including the distinctly Python-esque video for the 1977 song “Crackerjack Palace.”

Idle also pointed out that he did co-write a song with the music legend: “The Pirate Song.

Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr get back together for mini-Beatles reunion
Image
Paul McCartney had to get Ringo Starr back into his life this week, bringing out his former Beatles bandmate for a mini reunion during the final show of McCartney’s Got Back Tour.

McCartney concluded his tour at London’s 02 Arena after nearly 60 performances across the globe. After leading off the encore with “I Got a Feeling”, McCartney introduced former Beatles drummer Starr to just about as much love as you’d expect from the crowd. Greeting the audience with peace and love, Starr said, “It’s fantastic, playing with me old mate, but there comes a time when we’ve got to go home. All that remains to be said….I’ve had a great night and I love you all.”

Starr played drums for a reprise of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, followed up by “Helter Skelter” before McCartney closed out the set with the Abbey...

All Things Must Be Cast: Joseph Quinn to Play George Harrison in Beatles Biopics?
Image
With a little help from casting directors and the rumor mill, the stars of the forthcoming separate Beatle biopics are coming into view — and could now include two actors from Gladiator II. According to Deadline, Joseph Quinn, who plays Emperor Geta in that film and is also known for Stranger Things, has signed on to play George Harrison in one of director Sam Mendes’ non-doc films on the lives of each Beatle.

Although nothing has been officially confirmed, it appears likely that Paul Mescal (Lucius in Gladiator II) will portray...

Will Joseph Quinn play George Harrison in Sam Mendes’ Beatles movies?
Image
According to Deadline, Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles movies may serve as a major Gladiator II reunion. The outlet has heard that Joseph Quinn is the top choice for playing George Harrison. The actor has reportedly been seen carrying around a guitar while he shoots The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

As we know, Ridley Scott recently let it slip that Gladiator II star Paul Mescal would appear in the Beatles movies, reportedly as Paul McCartney. Ringo Starr has previously confirmed that Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) would be playing him. As for John Lennon, it’s expected that he’ll be played by Harris Dickinson (Babygirl). None of the deals have closed, so anything could still change. The project is very ambitious. Instead of just one movie, Mendes will direct four movies, each telling the story from the point of view of a different member of the Beatles.

Beatles '64 Is A Perfect Reminder To Watch Peter Jackson's Amazing Beatles Documentary With 93% On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Beatles ‘64 is a great new Beatles documentary on Disney+, but Peter Jackson made an even better Beatles doc for the platform, The Beatles: Get Back, three years ago. Produced by Martin Scorsese, Beatles ‘64 examines the impact that the Fab Four had on American pop culture when they first arrived in the United States in the titular year. It uses newly restored footage of landmark moments from the band’s history, like their historic performance on The Ed Sullivan Show, to capture what it felt like when the Beatlemania craze went global.

While Beatles ‘64 is the newest Beatles doc to hit the streaming library of Disney+, it’s far from the first. Earlier this year, Disney dropped a new 4K restoration of Let It Be, the 1970 doc that had struggled to secure a DVD and Blu-ray release for decades. Disney released a doc about the Abbey Road studio,...

"Beatles Are Starving The Barbers": Why Barbers In The US Protested Against The Beatles
Image
Disney’s new documentary, Beatles ‘64, reveals that American barbers protested the Fab Four in the 1960s, and they had a very specific beef with the band. Produced by Martin Scorsese, Beatles ‘64 examines the Beatles’ impact on American pop culture when they made their first trip to the United States in February 1964. It was during this stint that they made their historic appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which introduced the band to U.S. audiences and took the Beatlemania craze worldwide.

Not only does Beatles ‘64 have a great soundtrack; it’s full of fascinating insights into this crucial period in the history of the iconic band. The documentary, directed by David Tedeschi, contrasts footage of contemporary Beatles fans gushing over their new favorite band with footage of the band members themselves, highlighting their interpersonal conflicts. One of the key revelations from the doc is that the Beatles were protested and...

Why Martin Scorsese Appears In Disney's Beatles '64 Documentary
Image
Goodfellas director Martin Scorsese appears pretty prominently in the new Beatles documentary on Disney+, Beatles ‘64, and it’s not immediately obvious what he has to do with the Beatles. While it hasn’t been quite as widely acclaimed as Disney’s other Beatles docs, Get Back and Let It Be, Beatles ‘64 has a great soundtrack, and it’s been well-received by fans. It offers an intriguing insight into one of the most crucial periods in the history of the band, with newly restored footage of some of their most significant performances.

Beatles ‘64 explores the cultural impact that the Beatles had on the United States after their first visit to America in February 1964. It features gorgeously restored footage of the Beatles’ turning-point performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The documentary contrasts footage of the Beatlemania fad with the interpersonal conflicts between the band members. It has a lot of...

Ringo Starr Says Barry Keoghan Will Play Him in Sam Mendes' Four Part Beatles Project
Image
Back in February 2024, Deadline announced that Sam Mendes, the filmmaker behind American Beauty, Road to Perdition, 1917, and the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre, would direct four separate but interconnected films about each member of The Beatles. Now, we have some major casting news from one former Beatle; drummer and sometimes actor Ringo Starr, who told Entertainment Tonight that Barry Keoghan will play him in Mendes' sprawling project. Speaking of the reported casting, Starr said:

"I think it’s great. I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many."

Keoghan may not be the spitting image of Starr, but the two are actually the same height - 5 foot 8 inches. The actor, who was born in Dublin, Ireland, already proved he could pull off a convincing Liverpool accent in Saltburn, so just slap Starr's iconic mustache and long hair, and we may just have ourselves a pretty convincing onscreen Ringo.

Sam Mendes’ Beatles movies rumored to star Barry Keoghan, Paul Mescal & more as the Fab Four (Updated)
Image
Update: It appears that Ringo Starr has confirmed that Barry Keoghan will be playing him in Sam Mendes’ series of Beatles biopics! When Entertainment Tonight asked Starr what he thinks of the idea of Keoghan taking on the role, Starr replied, “Well, I think it’s great. I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many.” Meanwhile, World of Reel reports that Joseph Quinn of Stranger Things may be the top choice to play George Harrison, surpassing the previously rumored Charlie Rowe.

Our original article on the casting rumors, which we posted back in June, follows:

It was announced earlier this year that Sam Mendes was undertaking an ambitious project involving one of the biggest bands in history: The Beatles. Instead of just one movie, Mendes is set to direct four movies, each telling the story from the point of view of a different member of the Beatles.

But when they played The Ed Sullivan Show, for a TV audience of 73 million viewers, they did more than just invade America. They founded a new kind of daydream nation: the United States of Beatlemania.

Image
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of The Beatles’ the’ first visit to the USA in February 1964, Martin Scorsese has put the band back together, so to speak. Scorsese produces along with others including Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison, and Sean Ono Lennon this wildly entertaining and smartly conceived new documentary that liberally mixes footage from the iconic 1964 documentary chronicling the Fab Four’s visit, which was the result of unprecedented access given to directors Albert and David Maysles (Gimme Shelter), plus new interviews including Paul and Ringo, remixed musical tracks and the Ed Sullivan Show appearance and much more.

Beatles ’64 will begin streaming on Friday November 29 on Disney +, which no doubt is trying to replicate its success with Peter Jackson’s landmark 2021 miniseries The Beatles: Get Back, which won five Emmys.

Image
Martin Scorsese is producing a new Disney+ documentary that chronicles The Beatles’ first trip to the U.S. in 1964. The documentary, aptly dubbed “Beatles ’64,” will hit Disney+ on Nov. 29, the streamer announced Monday.

“Beatles ’64” will follow The Fab Four — McCartney, Starr, John Lennon and George Harrison — from the first moment they landed in New York City on Feb. 7, 1964, just two days before 73 million people watched them perform on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

Footage from that historic performance, as well as the group’s first American show in Washington, D.C., will be mixed among clips that show a “more intimate behind the scenes story,” according to a press release from the band.

Scorsese is, of course, no stranger to music or Beatles-related documentaries.

In her office at the Friar Park estate where she and George Harrison lived, Olivia Harrison grabs a piece of correspondence she only recently saw: a handwritten letter from her late husband to his mother when the Beatles were hanging with the Maharishi in India in 1968. “I became famous and made all this material wealth,” the letter reads in part. “That was only to enable me to see that there was more in life … I now know that I’m going to make it to the real top, which is...

Bob Iger Says Top Democrat Urged Him to Run for U.S. President Because ‘You Look the Part’: ‘Give Me a Break’
Image
Talk of Bob Iger launching a bid for U.S. president has swirled for years — with the likes of Oprah Winfrey even publicly backing a potential run by the Disney CEO in 2020. Iger had previously said he considered taking a run at the highest political office in America.

Iger has now revealed that an unnamed powerful member of the Democratic party once encouraged him to run for president. “He said to me, ‘You should run for president,’ and I said, ‘Tell me why?'” the Disney chief said on Wednesday’s episode of podcast “Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa” on SiriusXM. “And his first words out of his mouth were, ‘Well, you really look the part.’ I said, ‘Give me a break. That’s not enough.'”

Iger declined to identify the pol who make the remark, but denied to Ripa that it was Bill Clinton. “I...

Image
Exclusive: Ahead of its world premiere today at the Berlin Film Festival, Cohen Media Group has secured all North American distribution rights to Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger.

Martin Scorsese narrates the film, which is directed by Emmy winner David Hinton.

Cmg negotiated exclusive theatrical and ancillary rights in North America with a planned release in 2024 in an exclusive window prior to TCM’s subsequent TV premiere.

The film puts a spotlight on Brit filmmakers Powell and Pressburger who created some of the most revered films of the British golden age, including The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, A Matter of Life and Death and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. In the words of Scorsese, their films were “grand, poetic, wise, adventurous, headstrong, enraptured by beauty, deeply romantic, and completely uncompromising.”

Sam Mendes is set to tell The Beatles’ story with four interconnected films about each member
Image
When it comes to arguably the biggest acts in rock music history, how does one go about making a film adaptation that lives up to the legend? The King of Rock ‘N’ Roll, Elvis Presley, would get his own flashy, epic treatment courtesy of Baz Luhrmann’s visual flair in 2022. But for a band like The Beatles, how do you truly capture the journey in a feature film? Director Sam Mendes has the answer. You do four feature films. Deadline has the breaking story that the Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty director will audaciously attempt to cover the story of The Beatles with four films, which will each concentrate on a member of the band.

Mendes’ vision involves having each movie tell the story from each Beatle’s point of view and will interconnect with the other films. The 1917 director conceived of this grand idea and had pitched it to Hollywood,...

Sam Mendes, Sony & Apple Corps Set Four Beatles Theatrical Movies On Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison & Ringo Starr
Image
Exclusive: In a move that ought to make fans of The Beatles twist and shout, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Oscar-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes and his Neal Street Productions have set plans to make four separate theatrical films — one on each of the members of music’s most famous and enduring band.

Mendes will direct all four of the films, and this marks the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and The Beatles – Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison – have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film.

Mendes conceived this grand vision. He’ll tell interconnected stories, one from each band member’s point of view. The dating cadence of the films will be revealed closer to the films’ release. I’m told they are locking down writers quickly.

This is perhaps the most ambitious project Deadline has revealed exclusively since...

Martin Scorsese at an event for Golden Globe Awards (2010)
Made In England | Documentary about Powell and Pressburger to screen in UK cinemas in May
Martin Scorsese at an event for Golden Globe Awards (2010)
Martin Scorsese will narrate and present Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger, a documentary about the legendary filmmaking duo. It’s out in May.

In the 1940s and early 50s, filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger made some of the best and most important films to emerge from the UK. Among their most admired works are The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp (1943), Black Narcissus (1947) and The Red Shoes (1948).

Whether they were wartime romances, comedies or dramas with a hint of the fantastical, the duo’s films were beautifully shot uniquely their own, largely because – unusually – they wrote, directed and produced their movies, with almost no studio interference, under their company banner, The Archers.

Narrated by Martin Scorsese, Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger will explore the pair’s singular life and work, with the feature-length documentary running to a generous 129 minutes. Fittingly, given...

The Beatles Release New Song ‘Now And Then’ Featuring John Lennon’s Vocals
Image
The Beatles have released their final song as a band, “Now And Then,” with the late John Lennon’s voice.

Over the summer, Paul McCartney announced the new track, which feature lyrics written and sung by Lennon before he died in 1980.

The creation of this song started in 1994 when Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, gave McCartney two cassettes that Lennon recorded at home in the 70s. McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison played around with the recordings, but because of background noise from traffic and television, the tape was unusable. McCartney still held onto hope that one day, they would be able to figure out how to eliminate the background noise and focus on Lennon’s singing, which brings us to today.

Using AI technology, McCartney and Starr were able to extract just Lennon’s vocals and incorporate them into the track. McCartney detailed how they used the technology that...

The Beatles Are Releasing a New Song in the Year 2023
Image
Who had the release of a new Beatles song on their 2023 bingo card? On November 2nd, the legendary band will return with what is being described as their “final song.”

Featuring all four Beatles — John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr — “Now and Then” began its journey as a home demo of Lennon’s, which was then worked on by the other three Beatles in the mid-90s, during the same period that they made their only other post-breakup songs, “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love.” At the time, though, a loud hum in Lennon’s original recording rendered the demo essentially unusable, and though an effort was made to flesh the song out, it was ultimately abandoned.

Fast-forward to 2021, when Peter Jackson was working on his celebrated documentary, The Beatles: Get Back. For that production, Jackson’s team utilized WingNut Films’ Mal audio AI technology to...

‘The Beatles: Get Back’ Director Peter Jackson Bests Judd Apatow, Amy Poehler For Emmy Directing Win
Image
The Beatles: Get Back director Peter Jackson overcame formidable competition from some Hollywood heavyweights tonight to claim the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program.

His rivals for the honor included Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio for George Carlin’s American Dream, Amy Poehler for Lucy and Desi, W. Kamau Bell for We Need to Talk About Cosby, and Andrew Rossi for The Andy Warhol Diaries.

It was Jackson’s second win of the night at the Creative Arts Ceremony in Los Angeles, after The Beatles: Get Back won Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.

The Disney+ series was built from material originally shot in 1970 for Let It Be, a documentary about the making of the Beatles’ album of that name. Jackson limited himself almost exclusively to footage...

Peter Jackson Wins Two Emmys for ‘The Beatles: Get Back’
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Peter Jackson won his first Emmys, for directing and for outstanding documentary, for The Beatles: Get Back docuseries, which debuted last year on Disney+.

“A big shout-out to the Beatles,” enthused Jackson. For best documentary, winners also included Paul McCartney, Ring Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison.

Get Back is based on material shot in early 1969 for the Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 feature film Let It Be. Both picture and sound went through a meticulous restoration process, building on techniques developed to restore World War I footage in Jackson’s 2018 documentary, They Shall Not Grow Old. Accepting the directing Emmy, Jackson recognized Lindsay-Hogg’s work.

Jackson is now halfway to Egot. He won three Oscars for writing, directing and producing The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Peter Jackson Wins Emmy for Directing The Beatles Documentary ‘Get Back’
Peter Jackson
Three-time Oscar winner Peter Jackson added to his trophy collection on Saturday, taking home the Emmy for best director of a documentary/nonfiction program for his widely acclaimed Disney+ project, “The Beatles: Get Back.” As a producer of the doc, he also won for Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Series.

Accepting his second award of the night, Jackson recalled how old he was when the footage in the documentary was shot in 1969. “I was an 8-year-old in New Zealand, a Boy Scout wearing short pants. But to be a tiny part of The Beatles’ story was a dream come true for that 8-year-old kid.”

The three-part, nearly eight-hour documentary chronicles The Beatles’ 22-day recording of their “Let It Be” album, which was previously understood to be a dark chapter in the band’s existence. Drawing from nearly 100 hours of footage shot in 1969 on a London soundstage and then at The Beatles’ Apple Corps recording studio,...

How the Beatles Invaded the Emmys in 2022
Peter Jackson
A version of this story about the Beatles first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

They formed in the late 1950s, changed the world in 1964 and broke up in 1970. Two of them died, one in 1980 and one in 2001. And now, almost 60 years after the release of “Love Me Do,” can the Beatles really be the hottest thing in the nonfiction categories at this year’s Emmys?

Well, yeah, they can. Peter Jackson’s three-part, nearly eight-hour series “The Beatles: Get Back” rocked its way to five nominations, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program. That includes the first-ever nomination for Beatle Ringo Starr, an executive producer on the series, and the third nom for his fellow Beatle and fellow producer Paul McCartney, whose first two noms came for the specials “McCartney in St. Petersburg” in...
