“Andhera enters the dark zone with confidence and keeps you hooked” – A Subhash K Ja Review
Image
Andhera, directed by Raaghav Dar (who once upon a time directed My Friend Pinto for Sanjay Leela Bhansali), enters the dark zone with confidence. At times, the narrative amble is obstructed by poor writing (although there are six writers on board). But the series keeps you hooked, if you are into occultist experience whittled down to a game of cat and mouse with a “presence” called Andhera, no relation to Sarkata, although Andhera moves in equally mysterious ways, intercepting phone calls, inciting suicides, causing big movies to bomb at the box office.

Okay, I made up the last, just for some comic relief. Humour is not a favoured flavour in Andhera. Everyone is dead serious.

Or simply dead. I kid you not. The aura of eeriness is all-pervasive. And contagious. Sometimes it actually gets to you, like the sequence where this zany ghostbuster Rumi (Prajakta Kohli) and her possessed pal...

‘Andhera’ Ending Explained & Series Recap: Is Tama Dead Or Alive?
Image
Directed by Raaghav Dar, Andhera is quite an ambitious project, and there is no denying that the subject matter had a lot of potential. In my opinion, it fell short of delivering the impact it could have, largely because of overcrowded subplots, the inclusion of unnecessary twists and turns, and the lack of suspense, because of which the screenplay felt extremely flat and mundane after a point. That said, let’s find out what happened in the series and who was plotting humanity’s downfall.

Spoiler Alert

Maurice Pialat in Sous le soleil de Satan (1987)
Intended or not, the Criterion Channel’s programming of Maurice Pialat and Michael Roemer pairs two auteurs who spoke the same death-riddled language. August’s lineup will bring nine features and one short from the former, four features and one documentary by the latter, while series on Sammo Hung and Bigas Luna will combine the misery with something poppier, sexier, more violent––the perfect way to close out summer.

On the series side, “’90s Soundtrack Movies” finds the overlap between Lost Highway and Pump Up the Volume; a highlight of Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project features major works like Kalpana and Chess of the Wind; and a new anime program starts with Ghost in the Shell and Paprika. Criterion Editions feature The Red Balloon, Prince of Broadway, Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, Trainspotting, Eastern Condors, and Deep Cover. No matter how repetitive some action films feel, leave it to Vijay Sethupathi to make a very ordinary film look good. It’s your usual mastermind protagonist who starts off poor and gradually works his way out of poverty by bringing powerful people down. But what makes Ace better than a substandard film is undeniably Vijay Sethupathi’s screen presence and his effortless charm. The actor goes out of his way to deliver some brilliant action sequences, and he even sells the romantic angle better than most actors could. Birthday Special: Dimple Kapadia’s 6 Finest Performances
Image
To celebrate the iconic actress’s birthday, Subhash K Jha lists the six films featuring Dimple Kapadia’s best performances. As a bonus, we hear from directors, actors, and more on what it is like to work with her reel and real!

Kaash (1987):

Mahesh Bhatt’s powerful drama about an estranged couple coming together for the sake of their dying son, had Dimple pulling out all stops. Says Mahesh Bhatt, “Dimple Kapadia is the most generous Indian actress I have worked with. Our journey began with an unusual film called Kaash, which dealt with the bitter truth of life, that ultimately, you have to part with all that you love. The story revolved around a separated husband and wife (played by Jackie Shroff and Dimple Kapadia) who come together to fulfill the last three wishes of their terminally ill child, and how their relationship evolves through this painful experience.

Revisiting David Dhawan’s Biwi No 1 As It Clocks 26 Years, David Speaks
Image
Subhash K Jha takes a look back at David Dhawan’s Biwi No 1 which released 26 Years ago and we hear from the director about his thoughts on the story today.

David Dhawan’s Biwi No 1 released on May 28, 1999 was meant to be a fun take on adultery. Fun and adultery in the same breath is probably an oxymoron for the morons.

Nobody was supposed to take David’s droll take on adultery seriously, especially since the the titular role was played by a horribly miscast Karisma Kapoor, dolled up in Kanjeevarams and gajras trying to look like Kalpana Ranjani from the original Tamil film Sathi Leelavathi.

Karisma missed the bus. The very point of the original—that the husband goes out and has an extra-marital affair as he finds his wife frumpy, unattractive, and unsophisticated—is lost on Karisma’s portrayal of the Biwi. No.1 or not.

What makes Biwi No.

Sanjay Suri On 24 Years Of Daman
Image
Sanjay Suri talks with Subhash K Jha about his film the hard-hitting drama Daman, which starred Raveena Tandon, which released 24 years ago.

How did you land a role in Kalpana Lajmi’s Daman?

I still remember it was very early in my career after Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi and Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya that I got a call from Kalpana Lajmi. I was very excited to hear from her. I had loved Rudali and wanted to work with her and Bhupenda (Hazarika).

How did your meeting with Kalpana go?

On one call, I visited her office in Lokhandwala office, where she met me and said he really liked me in Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi and had a role to offer in her next film called Daman. I was super excited.

Daman was not a mainstream film, and still you wanted to be part of it so early in your career?...

Alia Bhatt, The Birthday Girl Whom Success Hasn’t Changed
Image
It takes a lot of willpower and grace to remain oneself even after stardom hits you. I have seen success affect actors in two ways. They either change completely or pretend not to change.

Alia Bhatt is the exception. She has not changed one bit since she sashayed into sight in swirl of girlie poise in Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year in 2012. Alia was not only Student Of The Year — She was the whole school. Endowed with the kind of natural talent and fresh beauty that I saw in Lucille Ball and Sridevi, Alia was just the antidote to the syntheticity that had crept into Bollywood ever since the norm and benchmark for feminine persuasiveness became how much and how frequently an actress is seen on social media.

Like Tiger Shroff, Alia Bhatt was treated as a bit of a joke on social media when she started. I...

A look back at Madhu Mantena’s Stunning Ghajini starring Aamir Khan As It Re-opens In Theatres
Image
As Aamir Khan turns 60, a slew of his best known films are back in the movie theatres. Ghajini, in some subverted way, is indicative of our traumatic times. The brutal cocksureness with which the villain Ghajini (Pradeep Rawat) murders Kalpana (Asin) and pounds Sanjay Singhania’s (Aamir Khan) head to a memory mess is a telescopic view of what the sociopath can do to civil society. No one is safe from criminal attack. Not even the super-elite like Sanjay Singhania.

Ghajini, produced by Madhu Mantena and directed by A R Murugadoss, is not for the squeamish. The violence is prolonged, sadistic and often done with the elaborate abundance and eye-catching elan of a staged opera (Ravi Chandran’s camerawork glistens and bristles with optimum optical glory). And yet women in the audience seemed to love the film. Ghajini is, at heart, a love story of a cocooned tycoon who discovers love in a working-class environment.

Ammu and the Portrayal of Toxic Masculinity in Regional Cinema
Image
In the vibrant world of South Indian cinema, Ammu stands out as a compelling narrative that delves deep into the shadows of toxic masculinity and patriarchal norms. Directed by Charukesh Sekar, this Telugu-language drama thriller, released on Amazon Prime Video in October 2022, offers a raw portrayal of domestic abuse and a woman’s journey to reclaim her life.

Challenging Societal Norms and Patriarchy

Ammu introduces us to Amudha, affectionately known as Ammu, portrayed by the talented Aishwarya Lekshmi. Her marriage to Ravi, a police inspector played by Naveen Chandra, initially appears idyllic. However, the facade soon crumbles, revealing Ravi‘s descent into abusive behavior—a manifestation of deep-seated patriarchal attitudes and toxic masculinity.

The film doesn’t shy away from depicting the harsh realities many women face in patriarchal societies. Ammu‘s initial silence and endurance reflect the societal pressure on women to maintain familial harmony, even at the cost of personal suffering.
