- In his most comic roles, he deliberately makes himself sound as if he were talking through his nose, although he avoided doing this in his most popular film, La Mélodie du bonheur (1965).
- Engaged for several months of 1943 to Maria Riva, daughter of Marlene Dietrich. Many years after Haydn's death, Riva spoke with great affection (in her biography of her mother) of his kindness and warmth.
- Almost as well-known in Hollywood for his passion for gardening as for his acting. His friend (and sometime next-door neighbor) David Niven once joked that Haydn only took acting roles in order to pay for the planting of his famous garden's flora and fauna.
- Reprised his Edwin Carp character on an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show.
- [after watching an unsuccessful audition]: What a future that girl needs!
