Had one son with André Morell: actor Jason Morell.

She provided the evil voice (uncredited) of the Great Tyrant in Barbarella (1968).

Her full name is often given as Joan Mary Waller Greenwood, although the name "Mary" does not appear on either her birth certificate or her birth registration. This indicates she may have adopted it later in life.

Chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history (#63) (1995).

Greenwood passed away at her home in Chelsea, London, on February 28, 1987, less than a week before her 66th birthday on March 4. Initial reports of her death suggest she died from a heart attack, however her entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (which cites her death certificate) gives her cause of death as "acute bronchitis and asthma".

She appeared in Le chien des Baskervilles (1978) while her husband André Morell appeared in Le Chien des Baskerville (1959).

Her fluency in French saw her cast in London in a production of The Imaginary Invalid when she was 18.

In 1960, Greenwood appeared as the titular character in a production of Hedda Gabler at the Oxford Playhouse. Starring opposite her as Judge Brack was the actor André Morell. They fell in love and flew in secret to Jamaica, where they were married, remaining together until his death in 1978.

She appeared on stage in a sketch with Robert Morley two weeks before her death.
