Vertigo Releasing has acquired U.K. and Irish distribution rights to “Dead of Winter,” the action-thriller starring Emma Thompson that had its world premiere at Locarno Film Festival earlier this month.
The film, directed by Brian Kirk in his first feature since 2019’s “21 Bridges,” casts Thompson as Barb, a widowed fisherwoman who becomes trapped in a Minnesotan blizzard and accidentally discovers the kidnapping of a teenage girl. Realizing she’s the victim’s only hope, Thompson’s character must transform from ordinary woman to unlikely hero.
Reviewing the film for Variety, Jessica Kiang wrote: “‘The Dead of Winter’ entertains, largely due to Thompson’s sturdy portrait of grace clad in a sensible, fleece-lined overcoat of gumption.”
Thompson also executive produced the project alongside her starring role. The cast includes Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca, Laurel Marsden (“Ms. Marvel”), and Thompson’s daughter Gaia Wise (“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim...

From the highly anticipated adaptation of master storyteller Stephen King's first-written novel, and Francis Lawrence, the visionary director of The Hunger Games franchise films, comes The Long Walk, an intense, chilling, and emotional thriller that challenges audiences to confront a haunting question: how far could you go?
The first social media reactions just hit X, and they're all overwhelmingly positive. We know this is often the case with the critics who weigh in on X after early screenings, but taking these at face value, it seems Lawrence has done the near-impossible: he's delivered a sublime adaptation of King's work.
The prolific writer has authored a long list of classic books. However, outside of a few exceptions, most have been poorly handled during the transition from page to screen.

Last year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Lionsgate will be releasing the film on September 12th – and today, we have a batch of first reactions to share with you. They can be seen below, and promise that this is going to be an intense, brutal, and emotionally impactful film.
An adaptation of The Long Walk has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile,...

The Long Walk has been heaped with praise in its first social media reactions. The upcoming movie, which was directed by Francis Lawrence (the Hunger Games franchise) from a screenplay by Jt Mollner (Strange Darling) is based on a Stephen King novel that follows a deadly competition where teenage boys are forced to walk until only one is left standing.
The upcoming The Long Walk features a star-studded ensemble cast. The young actors playing the walkers include Licorice Pizza's Cooper Hoffman, Alien: Romulus' David Jonsson, Jojo Rabbit's Roman Griffin Davis, Karate KId: Legends' Ben Wang, and All the Money in the World's Charlie Plummer.
They are joined by a number of notable performers playing the adult characters, including Mark Hamill as the Major, who enforces the rules of the competition, and Judy Greer as Mrs. Garraty, the mother of Cooper Hoffman's character.

While Peacemaker may have existed in the comics from the 1960s but James Gunn claims that his version is a spiritual sequel to the lowest-rated film of his career, Super. Starring Rainn Wilson in a dark-comical role, Super was written and directed by Gunn in his pre-Marvel and DC days.
However, recently, the movie has started gaining some recognition among niche fans, despite its generally obscure status. In a sit-down session between Wilson and Gunn for Interview Magazine, the filmmaker asked the actor, “You see where Peacemaker is a spiritual successor to Super, right?”
While it was not immediately obvious to Wilson (as might be the case with some fans), one can definitely see the connection once Gunn starts breaking it down. Read on to find out how.

IGN recently gave fans a glimpse of a new R-rated thriller, The Long Walk, but the clip was so intense that the Sdcc decided not to show it in full. The film is based on Stephen King’s novel and tells a story set in a dark future where the U.S. is ruled by a harsh regime.
Every year, teenage boys are forced into a walking contest that sounds simple, but it’s deadly. If a boy drops below three miles per hour for too long, he is killed. The walk continues until only one boy is left alive.

There are several characters on "The Big Bang Theory" who deserved more screen time, but sometimes less is more. Judy Greer's Dr. Elizabeth Plimpton only appeared in one episode of the CBS sitcom -- season 3's "The Plimpton Stimulation," to be exact -- and it seems that she made a big impact on viewers. The episode in question originally aired in 2010, but Greer claims that people haven't forgotten about it yet.
Greer has had supporting roles in many famous films, from "13 Going on 30" to "Jurassic World," with major roles in the "Ant-Man" and "Halloween" reboot franchises. But in an interview with "Big Bang Theory" star Mayim Bialik for the podcast "Mayim Bialik's Breakdown," Greer explained that fans remember her performance as Elizabeth more than most of her other roles. It’s about 85 degrees in my apartment, and my iced latte is melting into a puddle on my coffee table, yet I’m covered in goosebumps watching the new trailer for Dead of Winter, where Emma Thompson unwittingly comes face-to-face with a violent kidnapper in the middle of the Minnesota wilderness. There’s blood in the snow, but that could be from anything, right? There’s plenty of hunting and fishing in these parts, after all.
The new trailer for Dead of Winter drops Thompson into an icy, snowbound nightmare, where a remote cabin, a raging blizzard, and a pair of murderous strangers force her to become the hero no one saw coming.

Move over Nobody's Bob Odenkirk, a new unexpected hero emerges in the first trailer for a "riveting" new action thriller. Acclaimed actress Emma Thompson can be seen in so many different productions, from major films to television shows and on stage. The two-time Academy Award winner snagged the prestigious award in 1992 for Best Actress in Howards End and, in 1995, she won for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sense and Sensibility. While those productions established her as a star in Hollywood, younger supporters know her as Professor Sybill Patricia Trelawney in a few of the Harry Potter films. Throughout her career, Thompson has starred in comedies, dramas, and more, portraying each character with the same fire. In her latest film, Dead of Winter, the actress is in survival mode, not just for herself, but for a kidnapped young woman.

The Long Walk director Francis Lawrence has explained the importance of showing how brutal and violent the Stephen King story is. The filmmaker is no stranger to adapting this type of dystopian survival stories, after previously directing most of the movies in The Hunger Games franchise.
During a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Lawrence addressed how difficult it was to adapt King’s The Long Walk novel due to its violent themes. In order to stay true to the original source material, they made sure that the movie would be rated R, teasing the adaptation’s intense sequences. "I wasn’t going to buckle on that. I knew we were making a tough one. It doesn’t deserve to be PG-13; it deserves to be R," he shared. "Stephen also said it had to be an R. To be truthful to the book, it has to be violent, intense, sad.

There’s a vast world of horror beyond movies out there, especially in the literary space. So much so that novels frequently inspire new horror adaptations, whether brand new publications or enduring horror lit classics.
In a year that’s already delivered an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Monkey and Adam Cesare‘s YA slasher novel Clown in a Cornfield, there’s still plenty more on the way.
Here are seven upcoming adaptations of horror novels that we can’t wait to check out.
The Long Walk – September 12
The first Stephen King adaptation arriving in the back half of 2025 is a doozy based on King’s 1979 novel of the same name. Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) directs from a script by Jt Mollner (Strange Darling). The R-rated film centers on a grim annual contest in which 100 teens must journey, nonstop and under strict rules, until only one is left alive.

"A riveting psychological and emotional thriller." Vertical has revealed an official trailer for a snow survival thriller titled Dead of Winter, also listed as The Dead of Winter, from director Brian Kirk as his third feature. This is actually premiering at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival underway right now in Switzerland, and it will hit theaters later in September for anyone interested. A grief-stricken loner is caught in a brutal Minnesotan blizzard, where she discovers a young woman imprisoned by a desperate armed couple, forcing this unlikely hero into a dangerous fight for her and the victim's survival. Reminds me of Fargo, of course. Starring Emma Thompson, Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca, & Gaia Wise, with Cuan Hosty-Blaney, Dalton Leeb, Paul Hamilton, Lloyd Hutchinson, and Brian F. O'Byrne. The director also adds: "The Dead of Winter is a merciless kidnap thriller, set in the epic snowbound wilderness of northern Minnesota, with a beautiful love story at its heart.

Emma Thompson’s palpable aura of capability and down-to-earth shrewdness has seldom been better deployed than in “The Dead of Winter.” Without the star channelling the blunt good sense and sing-song Minnesotan vowels of “Fargo’s” Marge Gunderson, Brian Kirk’s midwestern midwinter thriller would amount to little more than an episode of “Criminal Minds” with a bigger landscape photography budget.
With her, however, the film just about performs against genre expectations regarding suspense and blood-in-the-snow violence, while also delivering a lesson in the potential for heroism of ordinary older women. Contrary to the impulse — in cinema and in the world — to ignore or at best wildly underestimate this cohort, “The Dead of Winter” regards the wisdom accrued by one such sixty-something, over the course of a decent life lived well and lovingly, as little short of a superpower.

The Minnesota landscape of The Dead of Winter is a void waiting to be filled with violence. Director Brian Kirk opens on an expanse of punishing white, a blank page on which a story of grief will be violently overwritten. Emma Thompson plays a widow on a quiet, somber mission: to deliver her husband’s ashes to a frozen lake that holds the geography of their shared past.
The film’s initial rhythm is meditative, almost funereal. Then, a wrong turn. She stumbles upon a remote cabin, a place that radiates a deep sense of wrongness. The narrative pivots sharply when she discovers a young girl held captive, pulling an ordinary woman from her private sorrow into a brutal ethical dilemma. Her personal ritual is shattered, replaced by an immediate, life-altering choice.

Emma Thompson has gone from snowy landscapes to sunny pastures. The star plays a widowed fisherwoman who travels alone through snowbound northern Minnesota and interrupts the kidnapping of a teenage girl, portrayed by Laurel Marsden (Ms. Marvel), in her latest film, Dead of Winter, directed by Brian Kirk (21 Bridges, The Day of the Jackal, Penny Dreadful). On Friday, though, she discussed the movie in summery Locarno, Switzerland during a press conference at the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival.
In the film, Thompson’s character faces a huge challenge. “Hours from the nearest town and with no phone service, she realizes that she is the young girl’s only hope,” explains a synopsis.
“Why start this action thing when you’re 66?! That’s just stupid,” Thompson told the press in Locarno on Friday, earning laughter.

Filmmaker Kayci Lacob knew she wanted to capture everything about growing up in the heart of Silicon Valley during the early-2000s tech boom for her directorial debut. She also knew that her first film deserved to be in theaters, and so Lacob did what most established auteurs are still hesitant to do (other than Francis Ford Coppola with “Megalopolis”): She is self-distributing her debut “Everything to Me” for a theatrical run and “betting” on audiences to buy tickets.
“Everything to Me” isn’t without star power. “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Ponyboi,” and “You” actress Victoria Pedretti leads the film as Claudia, a woman reflecting on her career trajectory and life choices years after aspiring to be the next Steve Jobs as a Stanford freshman (Abigail Donaghy plays a younger version of the character). Darren Aronofsky’s crime caper Caught Stealing is set to reach theatres on August 29th, with Francis Lawrence’s intense Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk following on September 12th and Scott Derrickson’s sequel to his Joe Hill adaptation The Black Phone (a sequel simply titled Black Phone 2) dropping on October 17th – and today, we have learned that the Motion Picture Association ratings board has given all three of these movies R ratings!

Clint Eastwood debuted his final film last year with Juror #2, but nearly 10 years before he hung up his director’s camera for the final time, he helmed a critically acclaimed docudrama that’s returned to streaming charts. In 2016, Eastwood directed Sully, the disaster biopic starring Tom Hanks (Greyhound) and Aaron Eckhart (Olympus Has Fallen) that tells the story of Chesley Sullenberger, the famous pilot who landed his plane on the Hudson River to save the lives of his passengers and crew. Sully is currently streaming on HBO Max in the United States, but globally, it’s become one of the most popular movies on VOD nine years later. Sully earned scores of 85% from critics and 84% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $243 million at the box office against a $60 million budget.

These days, multi-hyphenate writer/director/executive producer/co-ceo of DC Studios James Gunn is a pretty massive mover and shaker in the entertainment world, but in 2004, he was still just getting his career off the ground. Sure, he had been working with Lloyd Kaufman and Troma Studios for years at that point, having written "Tromeo and Juliet" in 1996 for his very first official gig, and he had written a successful screenplay for "Scooby-Doo" in 2002, but he was far from the professional and pop culture titan he is today. In true Troma spirit, however, Gunn was still hard at work on low-budget projects, and he starred as a version of himself alongside his then-wife Jenna Fischer in her directorial debut, a mockumentary called "LolliLove."
"LolliLove" is as indie as it gets, filmed for about $1,500 and shot in and around Gunn and Fischer's home, with actual footage from their wedding used as B-roll.

James Gunn is now one of the biggest names in Hollywood. As the co-ceo of DC Studios, he’s in charge of shaping the future of the DC Universe.
Before that, he directed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies and is now behind the upcoming Superman. But before superheroes and billion-dollar franchises, Gunn worked on a much smaller, and much weirder project.
In 2004, Gunn starred in LolliLove, a low-budget mockumentary directed by Jenna Fischer, who was his wife at the time. Fischer also co-wrote the movie and played the lead alongside Gunn. The film is a sharp comedy about a wealthy Southern California couple who believe they’ve come up with a genius way to help the homeless: handing out lollipops wrapped in cheerful slogans.
The cast is full of familiar faces. Jason Segel, Linda Cardellini, Judy Greer, and cult filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman all appear, mostly as versions of themselves.

Mel Gibson might be known for charging into battle in Braveheart or directing The Passion of the Christ, but there was a moment in 2000 when he stepped squarely into the world of romantic comedies — and now, that film is making a streaming comeback. The movie stars Gibson as Nick Marshall, a chauvinistic advertising executive who, after a freak accident involving a bathtub and a hair dryer, gains the inexplicable ability to hear women’s thoughts. Mark Hamill rose to fame with his performance as the heroic Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, but his newest role takes the actor to the other end of the spectrum. He plays the villain in The Long Walk, a new dystopian horror film based on a Stephen King story that's coming to theaters on Sept. 12.
Per DiscussingFilm, Hamill was present at San Diego Comic-Con to help promote the film. He spoke about the dark nature of his "sadistic character," referred to in the story as the Major. While Hamill has voiced the Joker for many DC projects, he still feels like playing the Major was very dark in its own way, and that even attracted the actor to the role in the first place.
Mark Hamill tells us about playing potentially the most villainous character of his career in ‘The Long WALK’:“He’s sadistic and all those terrible things.

New Trailer for ‘The Long Walk’ Previews a Brutal Stephen King Adaptation Hitting Theaters This Fall
Lionsgate has just released the official trailer for The Long Walk, a new dystopian horror film based on Stephen King’s 1979 novel, written under his pen name Richard Bachman. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence, known for The Hunger Games series, and it’s set to hit U.S. theaters on September 12, 2025.
The story takes place in a grim future where the U.S. is controlled by a brutal regime. Every year, a group of teenage boys is forced to take part in a walking contest. The new trailer for The Long Walk reveals a better look at the Stephen King adaptation at San Diego Comic-Con. The dystopian film is based on the novel of the same name by King (originally published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman). The film focuses on a group of teenage boys competing in an annual last-one-standing contest where they must keep walking or die.
Adaptations of The Long Walk were attempted and shot down for years, but the first completed version will finally be released in theaters this year and is helmed by Francis Lawrence. The cast is set to include Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Mark Hamill, Ben Wang, Charlie Plummer, Judy Greer, Garrett Wareing, and Roman Griffin Davis.

It’s time for marching orders. Lionsgate dropped a new trailer for The Long Walk today during the pic’s Hall H San Diego Comic-Con presentation Friday. Author of the novel that inspired the film Stephen King introduced the clip via video message, alluding to the Vietnam War and drawing attention to how this story came out long before The Hunger Games and Squid Game.
“It’s got some hard bark on it,” King added of the adaptation.
Based on King’s 1979 dystopian horror novel of the same name, The Long Walk takes place in a disillusioned America that is entertained by a competition called The Long Walk— a challenge in which 50 teenage boys walk continuously without rest. As the journey continues, each competitor must keep walking faster than three miles per hour nonstop or risk being killed. The last boy remaining will earn a prize of their choosing.

At San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that Stephen King was very involved in the casting behind The Long Walk. The story is a dystopian novel that King originally published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. It focuses on the story of a group of boys made to participate in a competition called The Long Walk, where they must continuously walk or risk being shot.
Over the years, The Long Walk has gone through multiple adaptation attempts. First, Night of the Living Deaddirector George A. Romero was approached to direct a version of the book, but that never came to fruition. Over 15 years went by before the rights were secured by Frank Darabont in 2007.
Darabont's rights eventually lapsed when his project never came to fruition, and control over the story went to New Line Cinema in 2018. New Line even announced a director in 2019, marking the third attempt to make the film.

Lionsgate will be releasing the film on September 12th – and today, the film was promoted with a panel at San Diego Comic-Con! Although a trailer was just recently released , Sdcc attendees got to see a new trailer, which was introduced by a video of Stephen King (he’s not at Sdcc). JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray said it’s a “very cool trailer, has the shocking image of seeing Mark Hamill use the F-word. Does a good job...
