Even though The Waterfront seemed to be one of the more promised new Netflix original series of this summer, the streamer opted to cancel the modest freshman hit rather than giving it a second season. The Buckley family's dark and dangerous business dealings with drug dealers won't continue in spite of a chilling season 2 twist being teased at the end of season 1.
In the weeks following the show's release, The Waterfront season 2 seemed all but guaranteed. The series spent three consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the top 10 most-watched English TV List, and in the US, the show stayed put in the top 10 most popular shows ranking for over a month.

When "Scream" creator Kevin Williamson's latest television series, "The Waterfront," hit Netflix on June 19, 2025, it struck many critics as an entertainingly pulpy crime drama that would likely stick around for at least another season. The series stars Holt McCallany as Harlan Buckley, the patriarch of a prominent North Carolina family that essentially runs the fictional coastal town of Havenport. A couple of heart attacks have forced Buckley to cede control of the clan's various businesses to his wife Belle (Maria Bello) and son Cane (Jake Weary), but they have only succeeded in accruing crushing debt. So, Harlan risks his life to step back in and right the ship, which...

The Waterfrontcreator Kevin Williamson responds to the show's surprising cancellation with a heartfelt message. Debuting on Netflix in June, and consisting of 10 episodes, The Waterfront focused on the dysfunctional Buckey family and their fishing empire that almost doubles as a drug-running scheme.
With an impressive Waterfront cast that includes Holt McCallany, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, Brady Hepner, Maria Bello, and Topher Grace, the crime drama seemed to be trending in a positive direction. It made it all the more surprising, this past week, when Netflix cancelled the series.

There will not be a second season of Netflix's crime drama series The Waterfront, despite its strong global streaming presence. The show's creator recently shared some of his initial plans for where the story was headed.
The Waterfront creator Kevin Williamson spoke with TVLine about the potential Season 2 plot after the series aired its action-packed Season One finale. Williamson revealed there was still plenty of drama left in store, although now it seems unlikely to see the light of day. One of the key story threads revolved around Harlan (Holt McCallany) and Cane (Jake Weary), who grew closer after the murder of Grady (Topher Grace). Williamson shared that the...

Netflix has made its decision about The Waterfront, the Kevin Williamson–created family crime drama that arrived in June and quickly drew comparisons to Yellowstone. Despite strong viewership in its debut month, Deadline reports the streamer has opted not to move forward with a second season.
The news comes just two months after the show’s June 19 premiere, during which it spent five consecutive weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language series — including a rare three weeks at No. 1. At its peak, the series pulled in 11.6 million views in its first full week, topping the debut numbers of some newbie dramas that have already been renewed, like Ransom Canyon...

Netflix has done it again. Back in June, audiences were raving about the streamer’s new number one show and fans believed that the next Yellowstone-esque family saga had begun. Now, The Waterfront has been canceled after just one season, and it has become the same old story for fans who have started to feel that it is not worth investing time in any new show that comes along.

When Netflix first greenlit The Waterfront, it felt like the platform’s closest attempt at finding a successor to Ozark (until it was canceled). Like Jason Bateman’s Emmy-winning series, Kevin Williamson’s Southern noir centered on a morally compromised family tangled in crime, corruption, and small-town politics. But only two months after its June 19 release, Deadline confirmed that the streaming giant has pulled the plug on The Waterfront.
Williamson personally informed the cast and crew that there would be no Season 2, even though the show wasn’t a flop. The crime drama stayed in Netflix’s global Top 10 for five weeks straight and even held the No. 1 spot for three weeks in a row.

“While I’m say the Buckleys won’t be back for Season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was Season 1,” he wrote, referring to North Carolina’s powerful Buckley family at the center of the series starring McCallany, Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist and Maria Bello.
Williamson thanked fans who had watched The Waterfront as well as his “dream cast and crew” who worked on the show in North Carolina and Los Angeles and the studio behind it, Universal Television, where he is under an overall deal.

Netflix's Ozark replacement show has been canceled after season 1. The crime drama series starring Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner ran for four seasons from 2017-2022 and is still considered to be one of Netflix's most binge-worthy shows.
Since Ozark ended in 2022, Netflix and fans of the show have been searching for a new original series that could be a worthy successor. While no true replacement emerged in 2023 or 2024, a new show released on the streaming platform in 2025 seemed like it might be the answer, although it has now been brought to a premature end.

It’s one and done for The Waterfront, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming that Netflix has quickly canceled the crime drama after one season.
The show, created by Scream and Dawson’s Creek mastermind Kevin Williamson, only debuted all eight of its episodes on Netflix on June 19, but seemingly failed to find the audience to justify a renewal.
The Waterfront told the story of the Buckleys, a North Carolina family that turns to crime to save their fishery. The show starred Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly Gonzalez, Danielle Campbell, Brady Hepner and Topher Grace.
The Waterfront had earned comparisons with other popular Netflix family crime dramas Ozark and Bloodline, however, its scores on Rotten Tomatoes were good but not great, with a critics’ score of 68 percent and an audience score of 66 percent. The 2025 box office might be thriving thanks to Superman, Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Jurassic World Rebirth, but earlier this year, things weren’t looking nearly as bright. One of the biggest disappointments from that rocky first quarter was Flight Risk, the Mel Gibson–directed action thriller that paired Mark Wahlberg with Downton Abbey and Defending Jacob star Michelle Dockery.
Despite its modest $25 million budget, Flight Risk underwhelmed on release, grossing just $48.7 million worldwide — with $29.7 million domestically and $19 million from international markets.
The movie follows Wahlberg as a pilot caught in a dangerous standoff midair, while Dockery delivers what many fans have praised as one of her most intense performances to date.

Matt Damon has long been recognized as one of Hollywood's most bankable stars. His debut came in Mystic Pizza (1988), but his breakthrough arrived nearly a decade later with Good Will Hunting (1997), co-written with Ben Affleck. The film's success, crowned by an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, launched him into stardom.
Building on this momentum, Damon quickly established himself as a versatile leading man. He delivered a chilling performance in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), embodied action hero Jason Bourne in a franchise that reshaped the genre, and charmed audiences as Linus Caldwell in the Ocean's trilogy, securing his place among Hollywood's most reliable draws.

The dark 2025 thriller, released on January 24, has quickly climbed the charts on Starz, proving that audience love can beat bad reviews. And right now, it’s #3 on the streamer.

Actor Topher Grace has officially joined Buddy, a unique horror movie from Too Many Cooks and Adult Swim Yule Log director Casper Kelly, per THR.
Grace joins previously announced star Emmy-nominated actor Cristin Milioti (“The Penguin”).
Naturally, plot details are being kept under wraps at this time, but it’s described as a “new experience in horror.” Kelly co-wrote the script with Jamie King, who previously worked on the Disney+ family movie World’s Best. Considering Kelly’s attachment, it feels safe to assume that Buddy will live up to its “unique” descriptor.

Will Smith has been absent from the big screen since last summer when he reprised his role as Mike Lowrey in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, but one forgotten thriller from the star has returned to streaming charts nearly 20 years later. Smith stars alongside Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka) and Woody Harrelson (True Detective) in Seven Pounds, the tragic mystery following a man with a fateful secret who goes on a life-changing journey altered by seven strangers. Seven Pounds is streaming on Rakuten TV globally, where it’s become one of the most popular movies on the platform in several countries, including Estonia. The film was panned by critics who rated it a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it landed a respectable 75% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It also grossed $169 million at the box office against a $55 million budget.

The 2025 box office has been a mixed bag. Despite a summer packed with successes, from Universal's How to Train Your Dragon remake to Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch, and most recently the all-conquering Jurassic World Rebirth, the first half of the year was stuffed with box-office misfires. One of these financial misfires came in the form of the action thriller Flight Risk, which teamed up Mark Wahlberg with director Mel Gibson, following their work together on 2022's Father Stu.
Sadly, despite being made for a reported $25 million,Flight Risk fell short of the all-important $50 million mark, finishing its theatrical run with just $48.7 million. Split between $29.7 million domestically and $19 million from overseas markets, Flight Risk buckled under the pressure of its box-office competition, from the 2024 overspill in Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, to the later arrivals of Captain America: Brave New World and The Monkey. Fifteen years ago this week, Predators dropped into theaters like its cast of Earth’s deadliest misfits—uninvited, unexpected, and fully armed. Directed by Nimród Antal and produced by Robert Rodriguez, the film was a gritty throwback to stripped-down action horror, released with a modest $40 million budget and going on to make $52 million domestically and $127.2 million worldwide. Not a bomb, but hardly the monster hit it deserved to be, especially for a then-new Predatorfilm.
Let’s be honest: the premise rules. Eight of the most dangerous people on Earth — soldiers, killers, mercs, and one suspiciously soft-spoken doctor — wake up in freefall, dropped onto a lush, alien jungle planet. Surprise! They’re not alone, and they’re not the hunters this time.
It’s basically The Most Dangerous Game meets Predator, with a little Battle Royale tossed in for good measure. “I’ve always loved the concept of some of the...

George Lucas is the visionary behind the Star Wars franchise, a globally renowned and beloved space opera saga that remains popular to this day. Over the years, Lucas directed several installments in the franchise and oversaw most of its creative direction until selling its rights to Disney in 2012.
Given Lucas’ involvement with the franchise, he rarely directed movies outside the space opera saga, which is such a shame, given the director’s unique visual style and filmmaking abilities. Here are five movies I wish Lucas directed outside Star Wars that could’ve become glowing additions to his filmography, and here’s why.
5. Contact (1997) A still from Contact (Credit: Warner Bros).
Contact is a sci-fi movie directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on the 1985 novel of the same name, written by Carl Sagan. It follows Dr. Eleanor “Ellie” Arroway, who is chosen to make first contact after discovering evidence of extraterrestrial life.

The zombie movie is as popular as ever right now, thanks to Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's 28 Years Later, albeit with the franchise not technically featuring any zombies. With this in mind, many are finishing their watch of the first of an upcoming trilogy, and looking into the streaming archives for some more undead, brain-eating fun. In doing so, it seems some are stumbling across a forgotten zombie comedy from ten years ago, that stars both The Office's Rainn Wilson and The Lord of the Rings icon, Elijah Wood.

Following his reprisal of Eric Foreman in the long-awaited sequel seriesThat '90s Show, the brilliant Topher Grace set his sights on a new project, made in the shadow of the Western genre's recent renaissance. That series was The Waterfront, created by Scream mastermind Kevin Williamson, which, like many others, has ridden the coattails of Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone and found fair success on streaming.
Starring the likes of Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Melissa Benoist, and more alongside Grace, that series debuted and shot straight to the top of Netflix’s global viewership rankings, helping plenty of the main ensemble, including Grace, receive even further-reaching notoriety. In doing so, some have dived deeper into Grace's filmography to find similar performances in dramas with just as many thrills and spills, including the forgotten 2011 thriller The Double, which also starred the likes of Richard Gere, Stephen Moyer, and Martin Sheen.

A recent flop on Mark Wahlberg's resume has taken off on streaming after struggling to impress critics and audiences during its theatrical run. The Lionsgate action thriller, Flight Risk, has been soaring on the Starz movie chart months after its initial release.
Per Flix Patrol, and at the time of writing, Flight Risk is ranked third on Starz's movie chart, outperforming notable films such as For the Love of Money and Expend4bles. The film trails the acclaimed horror movie, M3GAN, in second place, and the war film, Dirty Angels, in the number one spot.
Flight Risk is the latest Wahlberg film to hit its stride on streaming in 2025. Uncharted, another panned film featuring the actor and current Spider-Man franchise lead Tom Holland, peaked at number two on the Netflix movie chart in February. Additionally, his comedy drama, Instant Family, also featuring Superman's Isabela Merced, became a worldwide hit on Netflix in May.

Netflix streaming charts have a new ruler this week. Just days after its long-awaited premiere, Squid Game season 3 has rocketed to the top of the streamer’s global TV charts. Not only did it top the chart, but it also dethroned the rising crime drama The Waterfront. The Ozark replacement had held the No. 1 spot for almost a week.
Released on June 27th (12 a.m.), the third and final season of Squid Game quickly took the #1 spot in 93 countries, according to Fixpatrol. Its return was never in doubt. The franchise remains Netflix’s most-watched show of all time. But the speed at which it climbed the chart speaks to its enduring global pull.

Netflix's latest attempt to replicate the explosive success of Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone has already hit a major speed bump. Netflix’s The Waterfront, a gritty family-crime drama led by Kevin Williamson, had viewers hooked with its first season. Set in a struggling coastal town, it explores the moral decay of a powerful fishing family as they drift deeper into the drug underworld. But now that The Waterfront Season 1 is out, the big question is—will there be a Season 2? In this article, we’re diving into the show’s renewal status, what happened last season, what we can expect next, who’s returning (and who’s not), and when we might see new episodes.
Will there be a Season 2 of The Waterfront?
Officially, Netflix hasn’t greenlit Season 2 yet. But Kevin Williamson has made it clear—Season 2 is already outlined, and he’s thinking beyond that too. He’s reportedly mapped out a three-season arc. If the current viewership numbers and critical attention keep up, a renewal feels like only a matter of time.

Kevin Williamson’s return to television feels less like a homecoming and more like an archaeological dig—one where the creator of Dawson’s Creek and the Scream franchise excavates his own family’s buried secrets. The Waterfront, his eight-episode Netflix drama, emerges from the specific crucible of Williamson’s North Carolina childhood, where his fisherman father supplemented dwindling catches with contraband runs during the Reagan-era economic squeeze of the 1980s.

Netflix's The Waterfront Episode 4 revealed why Bree Buckley hated her younger brother, Cane, all these years, and there is a deeper reason. As the eldest Buckley daughter, Bree has had a tumultuous journey in the eight-episode family drama series. The Waterfront began in the middle of Bree's sobriety journey while she attempts to reconnect with her son, Diller. However, as the season progressed, it was clear that Bree had a longstanding rift with Cane that blew their brother-sister dynamic apart.
Created by Kevin Williamson (Dawson Creek), The Waterfront follows the story of the Buckley family as they decide to be involved in drug-smuggling due to struggling with their legitimate fishery business. The series boasts an incredible cast led by Holt McCallany as Harlan, Maria Bello as Belle, Supergirl star and Arrowverse alum Melissa Benoist as Bree, Jake Weary as Cane, Danielle Campbell as Peyton, Brady Hepner as Diller, and Topher Grace as Grady.

The Waterfrontcreator Kevin Williamson wrote the villainous character of Grady with actor Topher Grace specifically in mind. Williamson, known for projects such as Scream, Dawson's Creek, and The Vampire Diaries, among others, has brought a new TV series to Netflix. The Waterfront follows the powerful Buckley family, who run a fishery and restaurant in a small town in North Carolina. To escape their debt, the Buckleys get back into the drug trafficking game with a supplier named Grady (Grace), who turns out to be dangerously unpredictable.
During an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan for The Waterfront, Williamson explained that he wrote the character of Grady with Grace in mind. "I wanted someone who was so darn likable," the screenwriter said, "someone we knew to be so darn cute and funny and winning." Williamson went on to say that he enjoys characters that are really funny but do terribly evil things.

Flight Risk may not have had a smooth takeoff at the box office, but the Mark Wahlberg-led thriller is climbing the charts now – at least on streaming. The Lionsgate action flick, directed by Mel Gibson, is currently sitting at #2 on Starz, marking a surprising turnaround for a film that struggled to find its footing when it debuted in theaters.
Despite a promising cast – including Wahlberg as a psychotic pilot, Michelle Dockery as a no-nonsense Air Marshal, and Topher Grace as a nervous fugitive – Flight Risk barely made it past $42 million worldwide. With a critical score of just 30% on Rotten Tomatoes and box office returns that disappointed even modest projections, most had already written the film off as a mid-budget misfire. But streaming audiences seem to be giving it a second chance.

[This story contains Major spoilers from the season finale of The Waterfront.]
Kevin Williamson had a crazy childhood — and not all of it was captured on Dawson’s Creek. For starters, the creek was not shark-infested waters.
Netflix’s The Waterfront takes the drug-smuggling aspect of Williamson’s youth up a few notches. It also features a tremendous heel turn by Topher Grace (That ‘70s Show). The rest of the cast, which also includes Holt McCallany, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Maria Bello and Dave Annable, among others, are quite capable as well.
The Waterfront sees the Buckleys, a successful and affluent coastal North Carolina family on the brink of losing it all, turn to drug-running. As can happen with smuggling, violence follows — a lot of violence. The biggest bang comes in the season finale; if you don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading right here.
For the rest of you, our Q&a with Williamson is below.
