Like Jason Bateman’s Emmy-winning series, Kevin Williamson’s Southern noir centered on a morally compromised family tangled in crime, corruption, and small-town politics. But only two months after its June 19 release, Deadline confirmed that the streaming giant has pulled the plug on The Waterfront.

Williamson personally informed the cast and crew that there would be no Season 2, even though the show wasn’t a flop. The crime drama stayed in Netflix’s global Top 10 for five weeks straight and even held the No. 1 spot for three weeks in a row.

Soon after Deadline reported that The Waterfront has been canceled Monday evening, the series’ creator Kevin Williamson reflected on Netflix’s decision not to renew the family crime drama for a second season.

In an Instagram message over a photo from the show featuring star Holt McCallany and guest star Topher Grace, WiIliamson chose to focus on the positive.

“While I’m say the Buckleys won’t be back for Season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was Season 1,” he wrote, referring to North Carolina’s powerful Buckley family at the center of the series starring McCallany, Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist and Maria Bello.

Williamson thanked fans who had watched The Waterfront as well as his “dream cast and crew” who worked on the show in North Carolina and Los Angeles and the studio behind it, Universal Television, where he is under an overall deal.

Flight Risk is the latest Wahlberg film to hit its stride on streaming in 2025. Uncharted, another panned film featuring the actor and current Spider-Man franchise lead Tom Holland, peaked at number two on the Netflix movie chart in February. Not only did it top the chart, but it also dethroned the rising crime drama The Waterfront. The Ozark replacement had held the No. 1 spot for almost a week.

Released on June 27th (12 a.m.), the third and final season of Squid Game quickly took the #1 spot in 93 countries, according to Fixpatrol. Its return was never in doubt.
