Balding, heavy-set character actor, who was a familiar presence in German films of the 1920's and 30's. Best remembered for his roles in La rue sans joie (1925), Pilote malgré lui (1941)) and Ce diable de garçon (1944). He also had a distinguished career on stage in Berlin. His wife, who was half-Jewish, was murdered by the Nazis at the Ravensbrück concentration camp in March 1942.

The actor Karl Etlinger began his film career at the beginning of the 10's. To his earliest movie belongs "Die Bekehrung des Dr. Wundt" (1914).

Karl Etlinger died of a heart attack in May 1946 at the age of 66 in his apartment at Brabanterstraße 16 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. His third wife Anne-Marie Auerbach died two days later of cardiomyopathy.

At the beginning of the sound film era in 1930/31, he worked in Hollywood in films by Jacques Feyder and Wilhelm Dieterle.

Karl Etlinger specialized in the Austrian folk plays by Johann Nestroy and Ferdinand Raimund and received acting lessons from Joseph Lewinsky in Vienna. He made his debut in Wesel in 1898.
