“A Beautiful Mess”

Filmmaker Stanley Donen had substantial success with his comedy-thriller, Charade (1963), which starred Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. It was hyped and critiqued as “Hitchcockian” in tone and style, especially the light-hearted and glitzy To Catch a Thief (1955). (There are many who mistakenly believe that Charade is a Hitchcock film.)

The studio then wanted to repeat that success with a similar picture, Arabesque, also with Cary Grant in the lead role with Donen directing again. However, Grant felt that the script was “terrible” and passed. Donen allegedly wasn’t too thrilled with the script, either, and he wasn’t too keen on making the picture without Grant.

Then Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren expressed interest in the movie, so Donen acquiesced. Sounds like a fairy tale scenario for the greenlighting of a Hollywood movie, right? The two Oscar-winning stars were cast,...

"Viddy well, little brother." BFI has released a new trailer for their upcoming re-release of Stanley Kubrick's dystopian thriller A Clockwork Orange, first released in 1972. Set in a flamboyantly stylized near-future where gangs of disenfranchised teenagers indulge in narcotic cocktails and revel in acts of "ultraviolence", the film centres on Alex and his band of droogs. A young Malcolm McDowell stars, with a cast including Patrick Magee, Michael Bates, Warren Clarke, Adrienne Corri, and Carl Duering. Adapted from Anthony Burgess' novel. This is definitely one of Kubrick's wilder films, along with Dr. Strangelove, that has extreme violence and craziness galore. But it is still as genuinely brilliant as everything else he's made. As always, if you haven't seen this yet here's a perfect opportunity to experience it on the big screen. Have fun. On May 31, Warner Home Video will honor Stanley Kubrick and the film with A Clockwork Orange 40th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray ($34.99 Srp). The two-disc release includes two newly-produced bonus features: Turning Like Clockwork, a 25-minute documentary about the film's "ultra-violence" and its cultural impact, and a short documentary where Malcolm McDowell reminiscences on working closely with the legendary director. This two-disc edition will also contain the feature-length documentaries, Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures and O Lucky Malcolm! The 40th Anniversary Edition will be packaged in a 40-page Blu-ray book with rare photos and production notes.

Stanley Kubrick is among the handful who come to mind when discussing the greatest directors of all time. Although his career spanned nearly 50 years, he only directed 13 feature films, all of which are considered classics to this day, with titles such as Spartacus, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket. This year, his unforgettable adaptation of Anthony Burgess' novel A Clockwork Orange celebrates its 40th anniversary, and Warner Home Video is honoring this occasion by debuting A Clockwork Orange on Blu-ray for the very first time May 31. The studio is also releasing Stanley Kubrick: Limited Edition Collection on Blu-ray and DVD May 31, a nine-movie, 10-disc collection featuring the director's finest work, a 40-page collectible booklet, and numerous other special features.
