- Dignified German theatre actor and director, trained at the Reinhardt Seminar in Berlin and on stage in diverse classical roles from 1921. Long-standing ensemble member of the Munich Kammerspiele, from 1934 until his death. Acted in films from 1939, invariably as éminences grises or otherwise high-ranking personae: chancellors, ministers, bishops, generals, and so on.
