At the University of Missouri he claimed to be the first student at the first school of journalism in the world.

Began writing magazine articles for Butterick Publications (then edited by Theodore Dreiser) after failing English in his senior year of college.

Said after the publication of his first novel that he was paid in postage stamps.

Became stranded in India at the outbreak of World War One while on an around-the-world tour he was making on behalf of several American magazines. Unable to reach his sponsors, a friend (Mae Belle Savelle) was finally able to cable funds for his return. The following year (1915) they were married.

Gave himself the title "Two Gun Croy, The Law West of 125th Street".

Was a frequent contributor to the Saturday Evening Post.
