- Especially memorable as the young British officer whose three comrades, and then his fiancée, brand him as coward in Zoltan Korda's Les quatre plumes blanches (1939).
- He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1956 Queen's Birthday Honours List and made a Knight Bachelor in the 1968 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to drama.

- He was cremated at Chichester Crematorium. His ashes were sprinkled around Priory Park afterwards.
