For Daniel Donato, Horizons is more than just the title of his latest album. It’s also the location where the guitar wizard and his unique brand of “cosmic country” currently reside — right on the edge of the earth.
“It’s where any one person is standing in their life, where the land meets the heavens,” Donato tells Rolling Stone. “Psychologically, it’s the level that you understand or realize something, where your capacity meets the next level, in which you can discover more.”

Today we live in a certain type of monoculture which, as evidenced by the "Harry Potter" reboot series, has gone nostalgia-mad. But otherwise, things have never been more fractured. We're all on our own cultural journeys, becoming immersed in various subcultures facilitated by the internet and social media. It's for this very reason that Hollywood doesn't hold the kind of cultural sway it once did, as the rise of streaming platforms has sent the industry into a scramble to keep up with the public's increasingly fragmented attention. When you consider the fact that, in 2025, Nielsen confirmed YouTube had become the number one distributor of TV content in the U.S.

James Gunn’s love for music isn’t just a hobby; it’s the pulse running through every frame of his films and shows. Long before he made Guardians of the Galaxy or Peacemaker, Gunn played in bands, wrote songs, and performed, experiences he still credits for shaping his storytelling instincts. Reflecting on that time, he said during a chat with Nick Viall (via The Viall Files),
I loved playing music. Like, I played in bands. That’s what I did when I was young. That’s what I wanted to do.
Music, for Gunn, is never an afterthought; as he shared,

"The Simpsons" has surely featured the best guest stars of any TV show in history. Some of that is simply by virtue of having run for a full 36 seasons, but in the early years especially, the show had so much cachet as a cultural force that big-name stars simply couldn't stay away. Though there is one type of guest star "The Simpsons" has yet to land, the long-running series has hosted everyone from A-list actors such as Michelle Pfeiffer to musical icons such as Johnny Cash.
As such, Richard Dean Anderson of "MacGyver" and "Stargate Sg-1" fame might not seem like the most notable guest appearance. But the actor's cameo on "The Simpsons" was about more than simply securing yet another celebrity to add to the long list of guest stars. Coyote vs. Acme is officially back from the dead, and it’s heading to theaters around the world on August 28, 2026. The announcement came during a lively panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where cast and crew celebrated the movie’s surprising return.
The hybrid live-action and animation film, originally made by Warner Bros., was shelved in 2023 as part of a tax write-off move. It seemed like the movie would never see the light of day. But that changed when Ketchup Entertainment stepped in and bought the worldwide rights for around $50 million.
The company had also rescued another abandoned Looney Tunes film, The Day the Earth Blew Up, which ended up making over $15 million worldwide.
Paul Scheer, who hosted the Comic-Con panel, poked fun at the movie’s rocky journey. “This movie wasn’t supposed to come out,” he said. “I heard Warner Bros wouldn’t release the film — I’ve never heard of Warner Bros!

Coyote vs. Acme has officially locked in a global release date: August 28, 2026. The announcement came straight from San Diego Comic-Con, where the cast and creators gave fans a first look at what’s to come from the long-shelved live-action and animated hybrid.
During the panel, actor and moderator Paul Scheer joked about the wild journey the movie’s had, saying, “This movie wasn’t supposed to come out,” and followed up with, “I heard Warner Bros wouldn’t release the film — I’ve never heard of Warner Bros! This is really an Acme decision and I’m saying that for legal purposes.”
Scheer later added, “Ketchup is single-handedly saving the Looney Tunes. Mr. Ketchup, we salute you.”

If the long, twist-filled “Coyote vs. Acme” fight for a release was “It’s a Wonderful Life,” then Ketchup Entertainment would be all the townspeople at the end (79-year-old spoiler) chipping in to make sure George Bailey doesn’t go under. That’s as far as the analogy goes, though film fans can easily guess who is Mr. Potter in this scenario.
Regardless, the townspeople have won the day, and “Coyote vs. Acme” is indeed on its way — finally — with a theatrical release set for August 28, 2026. To sum things up as quickly as possible: the $70 million live-action/animated movie was one of a few (paging “Batgirl”) that were shelved in 2023 as tax write-offs for Warner Bros. (to the tune of $30 million), even though the movie had tested well. After a fan outcry, the film was put up for sale to other studios… but then it quickly was dead in the water again,...

Director Sean Ellis has had an unusual career; if it seems like his fellow Brits, David Mackenzie and Kevin Macdonald have been genre-agnostic, Ellis has taken things a step farther. He remains best known for the deeply affecting drama Metro Manila, which is essentially a foreign-language film. But a few years ago, he tried his hand at horror. He directed the werewolf movie The Cursed, starring Kelly Reilly and Boyd Holbrook, and while the film didn't make much of a dent at the box office, it's climbing up the streaming ranks following its Netflix debut.
According to FlixPatrol, The Cursed was the sixth-most-popular film on Netflix in the United States on July 20, beating the likes of Brick, Penguins of Madagascar, Despicable Me 4, and The Old Guard 2. That's quite a diverse slate of titles for any film to outperform, let alone one that barely got a theatrical release despite being designed for one.

In a career immersed in rock & roll photography, the late Jim Marshall was long associated with certain iconic images: Johnny Cash flashing his middle finger at San Quentin, Bob Dylan and Suze Rotolo walking the streets of Greenwich Village, Jimi Hendrix thrusting his left arm out during his soundcheck for Monterey Pop.
But Marshall’s ongoing documentation of the Grateful Dead embodied a unique bond between photographer and subject. Marshall, who moved back to his native San Francisco in 1964 after two years in New York, met the band soon after it formed.

As discussed in Gold Derby's 2025 Oscars halftime report, Sinners is sitting pretty with just under six months to go for the rest of the year. Of the films that have had theatrical releases thus far this calendar year, it's the easy frontrunner for Best Picture, and it's cultural footprint is about to become even larger as it heads to Max on July 4.
At this point, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Ryan Coogler's period vampire thriller will be a contender in year-end awards.
But which year-end awards?
There is an interesting possibility for Sinners when it comes specifically to its placement for the Golden Globes, which divides up the major film categories between drama and musical or comedy. If you assembled a focus group of today’s country artists and asked them to list their biggest influences, a few names would probably rise to the top: Johnny Cash and Hank Williams; Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. More contemporary icons like Shania Twain and George Strait would come up, and even underappreciated legends like Billie Joe Shaver and Tanya Tucker. But even if you sat this focus group down and locked them in a room for 24 hours, it’s likely not a single one of them would utter the...

Leonard Nimoy’s name is almost instantly associated with Star Trek, and it’s hard to imagine the show without thinking of the venerable Vulcan fans know and love. While most fans know that Nimoy appeared on a variety of television shows before and after Star Trek, what they might not know is that he also enjoyed singing. During the 1970s, he attempted to establish himself as a singer and even released several albums. Let’s take a look at this odd phase of Nimoy’s career and how it happened.
Mr. Spock’s Music From Outer Space
Paramount approached Charles Grean, who worked for Paramount’s Dot record label, about making an album connected with Star Trek. Grean’s young daughter, a Star Trek fan, suggested that an album connected with the show should have Mr. Spock on it. When Grean approached Nimoy about participating, the actor was eager to do so,...

Dating back to more than 2,000 years, a sculpture of Nike, the Greek goddess of conquest, known as the Winged Victory of Samothrace is believed to have been created as part of a larger ancient monument. Since its discovery in the 19th century, it’s come to represent important triumphs, especially in war.
In stark contrast, “Winged Victory,” a track on Willi Carlisle’s album of the same name, is about dead-end jobs, daffodils, and farm animals. In fact, the song’s title refers not to battle, a divine entity, or a work of art, but a donkey. Yet Carlisle sings with such fist-pumping ferocity about America’s unsung workers that he elevates them to the level of myth, and offers an affectingly simple explanation as to why: “I believe in the impossible/That no one is expendable.”

In addition to being a living legend of country music, one of the other things that Willie Nelson has been known for over the years is his love of smoking weed. However, based on the latest updates from the legendary singer, he quit the habit altogether for a surprising reason. So, what did he have to say?
Willie Nelson Is A Living Legend
When people think of the legends of country music, Willie Nelson is one of the names that pops up for the vast majority of listeners. Some might say Johnny Cash first, and rightly so. Musicals can feel like a tough sell with their flashy songs and dance routines, but some films break through with gripping stories, sharp wit, or raw heart. These movies win over even those who cringe at spontaneous singing, feeling more like great cinema than stagey spectacles.
We’ve selected 10 movie musicals that ditch the Broadway fluff, ranked from captivating to unforgettable. Here’s why these films will hook you, even if musicals aren’t your vibe.

9-1-1: Nashville released a suspenseful new trailer!
ABC just dropped the promo for the newest spinoff series of the 9-1-1 franchise. In the clip, firefighters appear to be chasing a flaming tornado while a cover of Johnny Cash‘s “Ring of Fire” plays.
Meanwhile, executive producer Tim Minear recently explained the choice behind the show’s setting.
“There were a lot of possibilities that had been talked about. I think that it’s a really interesting city with its own personality. It’s very unlike Austin. We did kind of a red state 9-1-1, but Austin is a very blue town. Nashville felt even a little bit more Southern. It also has the country music industry, and it just felt like it could be a fun place to set a piece of the franchise,” he told TVLine.

Appropriately set to a cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire”, ABC has released an explosive new teaser for 9-1-1: Nashville, which shows fiery tornados racing across Music City, apparently the spinoff’s first disaster for the city’s emergency response team.
As in previous iterations of 9-1-1, the new spinoff is an action procedural about heroic first responders, which also weaves in a family saga of power and glamour set in Tennessee.
9-1-1: Nashville stars stars Chris O’Donnell as Captain Don Sharpe, along with Jessica Capshaw, LeAnn Rimes and Kimberly Williams-Paisley.
9-1-1: Nashville is produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television. Murphy, Minear and Rashad Raisani will serve as executive producers and writers, with O’Donnell, Brad Buecker, Brad Falchuk and Bassett also executive producing.
Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group, spoke with Deadline last month about the upcoming spinoff.

Neil Young: Coastal, directed by Daryl Hannah, received a one-night‐only theatrical release on April 17, 2025, with select weekend screenings thereafter. The film documents Young’s July 2023 solo tour of outdoor arenas along the U.S. West Coast—his first live performances in four years and his first since the Covid‐19 hiatus.
At 79, Young stands as a lodestar of North American rock culture, and this documentary captures that moment when a storied artist returns to bare‐bones touring without a backing band.
In global terms, folk‐rock icons from Johnny Cash to Joni Mitchell have travelled beyond their national roots, resonating with international audiences who find universality in acoustic storytelling. Coastal situates Young within this lineage: stripped of layered studio production, he relies on plain guitar and harmonica, his vocals cutting through open air.
