- Between 1951 and 1957 he organised and led the South Georgia Survey, an expedition to map the remote islands in the Southern Atlantic. His work proved invaluable during the 1982 Falklands War and he has two places named after him in the region: Carse Point on the east coast of George VI Sound, Graham Land, and of Mount Carse, South Georgia.
- From September 1949 to October 1950 he played the lead role in the BBC radio serial 'Dick Barton: Special Agent', based on the popular character created by 'Norman Collis' , replacing Noel Johnson .
