Netflix Reteams with ‘Eternaut’ Star Ricardo Darín on New Movie as Streamer ‘Doubles Down’ on Argentina
Image
Netflix has unveiled a new film with “The Eternaut” lead Ricardo Darín, Argentina’s biggest star, and another by popular director Marcos Carnevale (“Elsa and Fred”), starring Oscar Martínez (“Official Competition”).

“Lo dejamos acá” stars Darín and Diego Paretti, another big Argentine player, in a movie about a pragmatic psychoanalyst (Darín) who begins to distrust traditional psychological methods, crossing ethical lines with his patients. Everything seems to work – until a creatively blocked writer (Peretti) enters his practice.

Produced by Darín’s label Kenya Films, in a pedigree creative package “Lo dejamos acá” is helmed by Hernán Goldfrid, who directed Darín in box office hit “Thesis of a Homicide” and co-directed “Caught” as well as one of HBO Latin America’s best series ever, “The Bronze Garden.” It is written by Emanuel Diez, who co-wrote Juan José Campanella’s “The Envoys” and Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat’s “El Encargado” (“The One in Charge”) and “Nada,...

Disney’s Latin America Execs Did Not Expect Robert De Niro to Love Argentina’s ‘Nada’ Script
Image
Even Robert De Niro could not resist the great script for Disney mini-series Nada.

Leonardo Aranguibel, VP, head of production operations & strategy at Disney for Latin America, and Mariana Pérez, VP, head of development & production for the same patch, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss what they called their “mission” for The Walt Disney Company in Latin America – but not before explaining how the veteran actor was brought aboard the Argentinian comedy drama.

Nada, which premiered on Disney’s streaming service Star+ in October last year, follows wealthy food critic Manuel Tamayo Prats (Luis Brandoni) who faces crisis after the death of his housekeeper. Set in Buenos Aires, the series is narrated by Manuel’s old friend, Vicent Parisi (De Niro), who eventually travels to the city to help his old friend.

“We sent the script to Mr. De Niro,” Aranguibel says at the international market and networking...

Image
With Halloween right around the corner, viewers have plenty of seasonal titles to choose from in October. Beyond that, we’ll be getting big new movies, including one of the year’s most-anticipated films from Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon...

Robert De Niro in Funny Trailer for Hulu's 'Nada' Series from Argentina
Image
"Let's see how this tastes..." Hulu has revealed the official trailer for a new streaming series called Nada, created by the Argentinian filmmakers Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, who last made the fun meta film Official Competition and the series "El Encargado". In this Argentine dramedy, Manuel is the quintessential Buenos Aires native. A food critic, aesthete, and all-around provocateur, Manuel has lived for decades with a woman who handles nearly all the tasks in his daily life. But when she passes away, everything changes – and Manuel begins to discover that he doesn't know how to do anything for himself. "A story about culture and life, and about how a change in your routine can lead you on a surprisingly tender adventure." Luis Brandoni stars as Manuel, and Robert De Niro makes an appearance as his old friend from New York, who joins him in Buenos Aires to walk around the city and chat.

Weasel’S Tale – Review
Image
A scene from Weasel’S Tale.

The Weasel’S Tale (“El Cuento De Las Comadrejas”) is a subtitled Argentine dramedy about a cluster of past-their-prime film celebrities that perfectly nails the sweet spot for presenting elderly protagonists as real, if eccentric, people. Most films or TV series starring seniors make them overly feisty or clever, presumably to attract younger viewers. For every Cocoon, there are scads of Grumpy Old Men or Golden Girls for laughs, or action films like Red that features retired spies who can still kick an outrageous amount of younger bad guy butts.

Some of those have been entertaining; others have ranged from condescending to absurd. But the age-consistent course of events here makes this one a rare treat. Think of Sunset Boulevard without a sycophant butler.

Former screen diva Mara Ordez (Graciella Borges) lives in a rundown mansion, surrounded by reminders of her former glory, including her...

Watch Clip from Ricardo Darin’s Toronto-Bound ‘Heroic Losers’ (Exclusive)
Daniel Aráoz, Carlos Belloso, Luis Brandoni, Rita Cortese, Ricardo Darín, Verónica Llinás, and Chino Darín in Heroic Losers (2019)
Variety has been given access to an exclusive clip and poster from Toronto Special Presentation “La Odisea de los Giles” (“Heroic Losers”) which, starring Ricardo Darín, has just scored in is native Argentina a standout opening weekend of Peso 58.8 million ($1.1 million) and 316,300 admissions for Warner Bros. Pictures.

With “Heroic Losers” having released on Thursday Aug. 15, that four-day first weekend bow is two-to-three times better than any other national title of the year, putting “Heroic Losers” well on track to become the highest-grossing Argentine movie of 2019 in Argentina.

The news would be if the film hadn’t made that kind of box office. It has been released in prime mid-August box office real-estate, when local audiences now expect a big Argentine movie.

Rarely, moreover, has an Argentine movie weighed in with such a pedigree package. A feel-good revenge heist comedy-thriller, studded with tragedy which gives the film momentary harder edges, “Heroic Losers” features the star,...

Ventana Sur: Ugc Distribution Closes Market Hit ‘4 x 4’ (Exclusive)
Buenos Aires — Ugc Distribution has beaten out all other suitors to clinch what had became by Friday morning the most anticipated deal of this year’s Ventana Sur market: All rights to France on Argentine Mariano Cohn’s “4 x 4,” sold by Latido Films and distributed throughout Argentina by Disney.

After mounting speculation about which distributor would finally win out on France, the deal was closed by Ugc’s Thierry Decourcelle and Latido Films Juan Torres.

The sale vindicates Latido and the producers’ decision to bring “4 x 4” onto the market at a private screening at Ventana Sur, attended this year by more than 100 French executives.

Stoking the drama of Thursday’s screening, it took place in torrential rain, but top-class screening conditions.

One of the biggest new titles at Ventana Sur, sitting in the mid-ground between arthouse and mainstream – it’s a thriller but makes caustic social comment about the vindictiveness...

Toronto: Juan José Campanella’s ‘The Weasels’ Acquired by Latido Films (Exclusive)
Latido is bringing onto the Toronto market “The Weasels,” the first live-action film from Argentina’s Juan José Campanella since he won a foreign-language Oscar for “The Secret in Their Eyes” in 2010.

Latido will introduce the film to buyers via what Latido head Antonio Saura describes as a “pre-trailer.”

“The Weasels” reunites the sales agent and most of the high-pedigree production team behind “The Secret in Their Eyes:” Campanella’s Buenos Aires label 100 Bares and top Argentine network Telefe, which is a Viacom Intl. Media Networks company, produce the pic, in co-production with Spain’s Tornasol (“The Man Who Killed Don Quixote”) and Argentina’s Jempsa, whose late head, Jorge Estrada Mora, produced five of Campanella’s films.

“The Weasels” returns Campanella to the semi-comedic mode, but hardly same comic tone, of 2001’s Oscar-nominated “The Son of the Bride.”

Based on an Argentine classic, 1976’s “Los muchachos de antes no usaban arsénico,...

Gastón Duprat
‘My Masterpiece’ Director Gastón Duprat On Comedy, Fine Art and Balancing Tone
Gastón Duprat
While “My Masterpiece” zigzags from buddy comedy to biting satire to sober reflection on age and illness – and does so in an order one wouldn’t quite expect – the film always remains buoyed by director Gastón Duprat’s appealingly light approach.

That same light touch enlivened the Argentinian filmmaker’s previous effort, 2016’s “The Distinguished Citizen”, which took home the Volpi Cup at Venice that year and would become Argentina’s foreign language Oscar submission and a modest box office hit.

Premiering Aug. 30 out of competition, this art-world satire hopes to launch with similar aplomb. Produced by Televisión Abierta, Aleph Media, and Mediapro, and sold by Latido Films, “My Masterpiece” focuses on the relationship between jaded Buenos Aires gallerist Arturo (Guillermo Francella) and irascible painter Renzo (Luis Brandoni), a nightmare of a client and Arturo’s oldest, dearest friend.

Whereas up to this point you’ve worked closely with collaborator Mariano Cohn,...
