Before making it big, he shared a house with pals Luigi Lo Cascio and Fabrizio Gifuni, who also studied acting.

Changed a lot of jobs before becoming a professional actor: at 14, he's been a tiler in his father's business, while taking evening classes; at 20 he was in San Diego (California), as a baby sitter, a newsboy and a dispatch rider. At 22, back in Italy (Rome), he entered the Academy of Dramatic Arts, while working in pizza restaurants as a waiter for a living.

Had a 3 year relationship with a screenwriter named Bianca (2007).

Three sons, Lorenzo (b. March 22, 2020) , Riccardo (b. November 11, 2021) and Francesco (b. February 11th, 2025) with journalist Nina Verdelli.

Has two brothers: one of them is a priest, the other one is a tiler.
