As a youngster Bedford's favorite actor was Gene Autry. Later he became a fan of Margaret Lockwood, James Mason, and Jean Kent. As an adult Jeanne Moreau became his favorite.

He was nominated for a 2001 Joseph Jefferson Award for Actor in a Principal Role in a Play for "The School for Scandal" at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in Chicago, Illinois.

He was nominated for a 2004 Joseph Jefferson Award for Actor in a Principal Role in a Play for "The Moliere Comedies" at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in Chicago, Illinois.

Received seven Tony Award nominations for Best Leading Actor in a Play, winning once in 1971 for "The School For Wives." He has more Tony Award nominations than any other actor except Jason Robards, who has eight. Bedford was also the recipient of six Drama Desk Awards and an Obie Award.
