After last week’s big Red John episode, ‘Black Cherry’ took The Mentalist back to its traditional case-of-the-week format on Sunday – with a little bit of Jane’s (Simon Baker) nemesis thrown in for good measure.
The case was fairly standard. The idea of a man trying to escape his past is not a new one by any means, but certainly one that I enjoy. It doesn’t hurt that it shares thematic elements with our favourite Cbi consultant, either. Also, as is seemingly the case a lot these days, I didn’t guess the killer correctly. Well, I did, but I didn’t guess that there were Three killers. As soon as a corporate retreat was mentioned along with a local paper from the same area, I knew the murder would have something to do with ‘what happened’ there.

I can't decide if this episode is rather run-of-the-mill because of the case, or because my attitude toward Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) is already ho-hum. Whatever the reason, mob bosses, Jane's usually trickery and Van pelt roaming about in the woods with the ghosts of her past didn't add up to a riveting episode. Lisbon (Robin Tunney) is worried about Van Pelt's coping skills when the necklace her ex-fiancé and Red John groupie, O'Laughlin (Eric Winter) gave her shows back up from evidence. Since Van Pelt has been playing "angry girl" all season since killing him, I'd say Lisbon's worry should have been more immanent a few months ago. Cho (Tim Kang), Jane (Simon Baker) and Van Pelt are sent out to the mountain home of the Gabriel Porchetto (Joaquim de Almeida), a Hispanic crime lord dying of kidney cancer. His sons were throwing a party, complete with womanly entertainment,...

Rarely does the team get to interact with the victim in their cases, and have the victim actually interact back. But in this case, they might have been better off if the intended victim, Doc Dugan (Craig Bierko) were actually dead. At the very least, he'd have been less annoying. Doc Dugan is a former football quarterback who was once an amazing athlete, and now he suffers from has-beenitis. He's still mega popular, however, and maybe not in a good way because outside his bar, his SUV blows up… with him inside. Team Lisbon (Robin Tunney) arrives and Jane (Simon Baker) seem to be the only one there who doesn't know (or care) about who Dugan was. There is a charred body in the car, but it's burnt beyond recognition. After interviewing the two guys who kept Dugan going, his agent Sudko (Christopher Gartin) and his manager Penn (John Eric Bentley...

A marine is run over, but he is already stabbed and dead. McGee (Sean Murray) removes sprinkles from a donut. Tony (Michael Weatherly) stood him up, they were meant to meet at a bar at the Air and Space Museum. Ziva (Cote de Pablo) asks if they're both dating now. Tony comments he should buy one without sprinkles, huffing and puffing "trying to blow the coffee down." McGee calls Tony to cancel, they're done. Ziva: "seven year bitch?" Tony: "Itch." Ziva thinks they're like an old married couple. Gibbs (Mark Harmon) doesn't agree, they're still speaking. Ducky (David McCallum) finds the Vic was stabbed with a big knife. Moss walked into the street and Ducky says loss of blood led to disorientation. This isn't their Cs. Tony and McGee follow the trail. Tony: "You were funnier when you were fatter." Well McGee could say, so was Tony when he was younger and less fatter too.
