Nightlife Impresario Bryan Rabin Is Bringing Back Giorgio’s and a Bit of Disco Decadence to New Year’s Eve in L.A.
Image
In the fall of 1990, inside a fully functional second floor magic shop located above a methadone clinic on Hollywood Boulevard, Bryan Rabin made his first splash on the Los Angeles nightlife scene (alongside his partner, the late actor Jimmy Medina) with a traveling, if extralegal, after hours club called The Lounge. “It was the Wild West. We’d just drive around at night and look for spots. I was 20 years old, full of moxie, and we’d just tell people we wanted to throw a bar mitzvah in their space,” recalls Rabin, noting the club migrated from photography and film studios to empty lofts and attracted everyone from Billy Idol to Thierry Mugler and Wolfgang Puck to dance there. “We moved every week to keep away from the police and had to call or fax everyone the day of each party.”

From there, he opened Prague in a Czechoslovakian meeting hall on Western Avenue,...

New York City’s Music in the 1980s at Museum of the City of New York Exhibit
Image
The new exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York, located along Manhattan’s “Museum Mile,” features Madonna, MTV, Run-dmc, Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, John Zorn, Liquid Liquid, Max Roach, Fort Apache Band, and much more.

“During the Eighties, there was a community-driven musical renaissance in New York City. It was an era of creativity and genre-defying performance that, in my mind, stands as one of the most influential in musical and cultural history,” says Sean Corcoran, the museum’s curator of prints and photography. “That wide range...

‘Susanne Bartsch: On Top’ Review: Behind the Gay Nightlife Queen Who ‘Picked Up Where Warhol Left Off’
“Susanne Bartsch picked up where [Andy] Warhol left off,” RuPaul Charles says of his friend, the woman he says set him down the path to become Supermodel of the World. He’s not the only one: Performance artist Joey Arias credits Bartsch with encouraging him to try drag, transgender pioneer Flawless Sabrina speaks of her in the same breath as Warhol, and fashion historians trace London style’s expansion to New York and Tokyo in the ’80s to Bartsch.

As for the woman herself, she’s still throwing parties.

While dressing for one of her fabled Tuesday night parties at Meatpacking district club Le Bain, Bartsch was fretting over the colors for one of her outstanding looks: “It’s not really pink,” she says. “I mean, I know it’s pink, but it’s not a pink that I feel pink in.”

"...shooting to fame in the 1950's with her fetish modeling and racy pinup photos, 'Bettie Page' continues to enchant and inspire multiple generations of women (who continue to emulate her jet black hair, blue eyes and trademark bangs) and men (who long for her).

‘After Louie’ Trailer: Alan Cumming Is An AIDS Activist With A Younger Lover In This Moving Gay Drama — Watch
Après Louie (2017)
Thanks to the members of Act Up (The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), being HIV-Positive is no longer a death sentence. But what happened to survivors of the initial wave of the AIDS epidemic, those members of the lost generation we never lost? Does the younger generation afford these survivors the respect they deserve, and could it ever be enough? These are the questions at the heart of “After Louie,” a moving new film from original Act Up member Vincent Gagliostro.

Watch Fred Armisen's Tribute to David Bowie on 'Saturday Night Live'
Saturday Night Live (1975)
During the Adam Driver-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live, the long-running sketch comedy series paid tribute to David Bowie by having former cast member Fred Armisen return to reminisce about a memorable 1979 episode of SNL where Bowie served as musical guest.

"When I was in high school and living in Long Island, I stayed up to see David Bowie play on Saturday Night Live. Watching him, for me, was a life-changing experience," Armisen told the audience. "David Bowie transformed whatever space he was in, whatever medium he was using,...

Is There Life on Mars?
I was gutted by the news shared by playwright/producer Jeff Cohen as he and I walked our dogs in Riverside Park early this morning. The Thin White Duke was no more. I struggled to understand the implications of losing a music hero. Rushing home, resigned to reality, I watched his two new videos, the one above and the ablum's title track which I featured on this website last week, both from his 28th studio album, ★(Blackstar), released this past week on January 8th, 2016, the date of Bowie's 69th birthday. As I watched "Lazarus" again, it all made sense.

"Lazarus" is clearly Bowie's epitaph, his final prophetic performance on this mortal coil...

Look up here / I'm in heaven I've got scars that can't be seen I've got drama that can't be stolen Everybody knows me now...

The coins on his eyes, the pallor of his skin, his frail body wrapped in a fashionalbe shroud.

3 NYC Theater-Makers Awarded ‘Genius Grant’
Theater-makers Mimi Lien, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Basil Twist were among the 24 2015 MacArthur Fellowship, or “genius grant,” recipients announced Sept. 29, by the MacArthur Foundation. Each of these exemplary talents is due to receive a “no-strings-attached” $625,000 grant to continue creating and showcasing their work. Tony winner Miranda has been enrapturing sold-out audiences of late with the premiere of his hit Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” in which he stars; in addition, he wrote the book, music, and lyrics. As he did with 2008’s Tony-winning “In The Heights,” Miranda expands the Broadway genre, telling the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and infusing it with the American immigrant narrative—mixing in hip-hop, R&B, jazz, blues, and classic showtune-style songs for good measure. Puppeteer Basil Twist is an already established name in the arts, known for his breathtaking underwater puppet show, 1998’s “Symphonie Fantastique.” His work can next be seen alongside legendary downtown performers Julie Atlas Muz...

Stage Door: Christmas With the Crawfords
Feeling the holiday spirit yet?

Jose here. It’s Christmas Eve in the Crawford household, and Joan (Joey Arias), and her children Christina (Chris March of Project Runway) and Christopher (Adam Davidson) are getting ready to receive a very special guest: Miss Hedda Hopper (Sherry Vine) who will broadcast a holiday special live from their home. As the perfectionist actress stresses to her children how important it is that they make a good impression - no wire hangers to be seen anywhere! - it becomes obvious that the holidays here are a truly special occasion, as many famous guests show up throughout the night (most of them mistakenly ringing the Crawford bell on their way to a party at Gary Cooper’s house).

Last seen in New York, twelve years ago, Christmas With the Crawfords is a hilarious parody that will certainly appeal to actressexuals who don’t mind their favorite divas being ridiculed.

This Week on Stage: ‘Newsies’ opens in N.J.
Disney’s 1992 cult musical finally has an official stage version. And it’s good. Read the highlights below (click on the bolded titles for the full reviews).

Morning Meme: "Husbands" Doesn't Want To Be Britney, Hugh Jackman Trains Shirtless, and Is "Gossip Girl" Going Gay?
While we didn't see the rash of teen suicides this fall that 2010 brought, all is still not well for gay teens growing up in America. 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer has taken his own life after enduring years of bullying. No child should ever get to the point where they feel there is no hope, because then society has failed him. And Jamey went from hopeful enough to record an It Gets Better video to taking his own life in five months.

Disney has licensed Avatar from Fox and plans to create a large attraction for their theme parks centered around Pandora, with James Cameron consulting.

In a move that surprises me and well, everyone else, Madonna is reportedly recutting her movie, W.E. in response to critics at the festival screenings. Is she mellowing as she ages?

As someone who enjoys being single, I'm more than happy to celebrate National Single and Unmarried Americans Week.

Pen to Paper: New York Stories
Arias With a Twist New York City: arguably home to more artists than any other city in the world, it's fair to say that it provides more than its fair share of muse-level inspiration. Films aren't shot in New York City nearly as often as they used to be, with tax credits making alternatives like Toronto seem more and more attractive to pennywise production companies. But there still is something magical about filmmaking in New York - or so the panelists at Pen to Paper: New York Stories panel led us to believe. Moderated by NY1's Budd Mishkin, the panel boasted a whopping six panelists: Joey Arias, a major proponent of drag-as-high-art, and the star of Tff '10 doc Arias with a Twist; Bobby Sheehan, major photographer and commercial director, the director of the Arias doc; Hill Harper, one of the stars of CSI: NY; Chris Messina, who stars...

Tribeca '10 Podcast: Joey Arias, Basil Twist & Bobby Sheehan
Photographer-turned-filmmaker Bobby Sheehan began his career documenting the late-'70s NYC punk scene, which was around the time that he befriended cabaret singer and drag artist Joey Arias (also memorably seen in Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and Wigstock: the Movie). However, it wasn't until Arias found and shared his biggest success with puppeteer extraordinaire Basil Twist—their wild 2008 stage collaboration "Arias with a Twist"—that Sheehan decided to turn his camera on the both of them in Arias with a Twist: The Docufantasy:

This euphoric documentary explores the dynamic creative relationship between Arias and Twist, but it also takes us on a tour of downtown New York's club, art, fashion, and performance scene starting in the late '70s, a time when these worlds were in constant dialogue, constantly inspiring each other. Director Bobby Sheehan has unearthed never-before-seen footage from the era of Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Keith Haring,...
