- Daughter of Verla Jo (née Sanders) and James Y. Sparks who divorced in the early 1930s. Was apparently named Wallace after an aunt on her father's side. Her father remarried and she had a stepsister named Virginia whom she never met.
- According to her daughter, Wallace Earl tried out two stage names early in her career, Eileen Harley and Amanda Ames. Both Eileen and Amanda were names of close friends when she was young. Ames was the name she thought sounded best with Amanda. Later, she began using the surname Harley, which was a real family name on her mother's side.
