His only son, Edoardo Agnelli, committed suicide by jumping off a bridge in Turin. Edoardo never married, but had an illegitimate son whom Giovanni refused to recognize.

As the head of the Fiat Group, he oversaw 4.4% of Italy's gross national product, 3.1% of the industrial workforce, and 16.5% of industrial investments in research.
