Drea's father was a furniture manufacturer and her mother was a playwright. She was raised in Queens primarily by her grandmother and a Nicaraguan nanny. She now takes care of her nanny, who had a heart transplant.

Her character on Les Soprano (1999) was originally written for only one episode. When she first read for the pilot episode, she was scheduled to play Christopher Moltisanti's girlfriend and thought the series was going to be about opera singers, as she hadn't yet been given a script.
