As of August 2024 she is the seventh-earliest surviving recipient of a Best Actress Oscar nomination (tied with Julie Christie), behind only Leslie Caron, Carroll Baker, Joanne Woodward, Shirley MacLaine, Sophia Loren, and Julie Andrews. She was nominated in 1965 for L'obsédé (1965).

She is the daughter of Muriel Olga (Palache) and Ralph Alfred James Eggar, a British Army brigadier. Her mother was from a Jewish family, from Amsterdam, Netherlands, and was of Sephardi and Ashkenazi descent.

She was in a relationship with Albert Finney until August 1964.

She trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.

She at first studied fashion design, but soon preferred drama.
