The world of streaming never stops surprising viewers. Just when it feels like every option has already been tried and tested, another one quietly slips in with something fresh. Roku has now entered the ring with a new service called Howdy. At first glance, it might look like another low-key platform, but it’s already grabbing attention for one reason—affordability.
For just $2.99 a month, Howdy hands over a catalog filled with hundreds of movies and TV shows, all completely ad-free. That makes it a smooth alternative to the usual free but ad-heavy picks like Tubi or the Roku Channel. And while plenty of streaming services throw around endless titles, Howdy’s library hides some gems that are worth pressing play on right away. Here are five of the most bingeable shows now sitting on its shelf.

Released on August 10, 1984, Red Dawn became an instant Cold War classic — blending teenage rebellion, survivalist grit, and patriotic fervor. Long before The Hunger Games or Stranger Things, the late Patrick Swayze was facing down Soviet paratroopers with a hunting rifle in the snow. Nearly four decades later, this cult favorite still leaves its mark on pop culture.
The Premise: High School Meets Guerrilla Warfare
Set in the fictional town of Calumet, Colorado, Red Dawn imagines an alternate 1980s where the United States faces invasion by Soviet, Cuban, and Nicaraguan forces. With NATO gone, America stands alone.

Crime procedurals are a genre of show that translates across borders and cultures, with South Korean television, or K-dramas, particularly prolific in producing crime thrillers. One particularly interesting crime show to come out of Korea within the past several years is a remake of the long-running American procedural "Criminal Minds." Also carrying the title "Criminal Minds," the K-drama version of the hit show premiered in 2017 and ran for a Korean-standard single season of 20 episodes. Despite this truncated length, compared to the American version's 18-season run, the K-drama "Criminal Minds" has plenty of similarities to the original while putting its own spin on the material.
The Korean "Criminal Minds" sees veteran criminal profiler Kang Ki-hyung (Son Hyun-joo) return to active duty after an extended hiatus following a bombing that left most of his team dead. Ki-hyung leads a quirky younger team to track down serial killers across Korea, with each bringing...

Francis Ford Coppola’s never been one to play it safe, but his demand on the set of The Outsiders took things to a whole new level. In one of the film’s most intense sequences, what was meant to be a carefully choreographed blaze quickly spiraled into a genuine hazard.
Crew members were reportedly on edge, and the set turned chaotic. The 71%-rated film still holds its iconic status, but that one moment almost burned more than just the scene.

Francis Ford Coppola literally lit The Outsiders on fire. During the intense church-burning scene, Coppola shouted for “more fire,” pushing for realism. But that craving nearly sparked disaster when the controlled flames flared up into a real hazard.

The sun typically makes for a welcome sight in horror; sunrise often chases away the boogeyman, after all. But not always…
Sometimes, the scorching hot summer sun compounds the horror. It’s not just a menacing threat characters will face, human and inhuman alike, but the harsh elements that further dwindle survival odds. Broad daylight also leaves nowhere to hide, making for intense thrills and chills if done well.

Patrick Swayze was one of a kind. He’s the only actor I can think of who was as comfortable cutting a rug on the dance floor as demolishing a room full of bad guys with his fists of fury. When he passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009, we lost an icon who was never really recognized as the legend he is in his time. In the years since many Patrick Swayze movies have become cult favourites, and with a Road House remake recently a hit, we decided now would be a good time to pick the five best Patrick Swayze movies.
Red Dawn (1984)
John Millius’s cold war “what if” thriller goes down in the history books as the first-ever PG-13 movie. It was also Patrick Swayze’s first major leading role, with him best known up to this point for a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders.

Chris Hemsworth's rise to stardom was just about as swift as it gets. Unless you're from Australia, you'd likely never seen the handsome young actor before he up and stole the opening scene of J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" in 2009. Two years later, he would become a global superstar as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Thor. From there, it's been smooth sailing for the hotsy-totsy Aussie.
Interestingly, had it all gone according to schedule, "Thor" wouldn't have been Hemsworth's first starring role. In 2009, prior to the release of "Star Trek," Hemsworth was cast as the hunky, jockish Curt in Drew Goddard's "Cabin in the Woods." The hilarious genre mash-up was really more of an ensemble piece, but Hemsworth came on strong -- which was completely intentional given the character's surprising death early in the film. Had Goddard's movie been released as originally planned on February 5, 2010, Hemsworth's profile would've sharply ascended in Hollywood.

This post contains spoilers for "The Walking Dead" seasons 7 and 8.
Introduced in season 3 as Tyreese's (Chad Coleman) cool, tough sister, Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) quickly gets thrown through the ringer: She nearly dies from the flu, gets captured by cannibals, her boyfriend gets eaten by said cannibals, her brother Tyreese gets bitten by a walker, and then she has to watch as her new boyfriend is beaten to death with a bat.
While poor Sasha never caught a break, season 7's big villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) was able to catch her. By the end of the seventh season, Sasha is taken prisoner in Negan's camp, and she realizes that Negan will use her as a hostage to further control Rick's (Andrew Lincoln) group. Sasha thusly asks the cowardly double-agent Eugene (Josh McDermitt) to sneak her a weapon to use against Negan, but Eugene only offers her a suicide pill.

Francis Ford Coppola, one of cinema’s most influential auteurs, was honored with the 50th AFI Life Achievement Award on Saturday at a star-studded gala at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Seated alongside Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, his filmmaker son Roman Coppola, and granddaughter Gia Coppola, the visionary behind The Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now, and The Conversation was celebrated in a way only he could inspire: with reverence, love, and a whole lot of family.
The night was a retrospective of the Academy Award-winning director, writer, and producer's career, highlighting friendships with Harrison Ford, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Ralph Macchio, Diane Lane, Dustin Hoffman, and C. Thomas Howell, among others.
Speaking to Gold Derby on the red carpet before the gala, Coppola reflected on a constant in his creative process: connecting with actors before cameras roll.

The first celebrity to take to the Dolby Theatre stage to celebrate filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola becoming the 50th recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award was an actor that has actually never worked with the iconic director. Still, Morgan Freeman, himself an AFI Life Achievement Award winner in 2011, set the tone for what the rest of Coppola’s colleagues and family members would highlight from his storied career.
“Francis Ford Coppola is still the independent filmmaker, believer of dreams on a dime, teller of tales that cost and lost millions,” said Freeman. “But tonight, fuck the bankers and the backers. We’re here to celebrate art.”
Though she was not at the event in person, his daughter Sofia Coppola, an Oscar-winning filmmaker in her own right, filmed a retrospective interview with the AFI honoree that served as a framework for the event.

Francis Ford Coppola was celebrated Saturday night at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles as he received the 50th AFI Life Achievement Award, the highest recognition from the American Film Institute. The evening brought together many of Hollywood’s most respected names, including Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Harrison Ford, Adam Driver, Morgan Freeman, and Spike Lee.

Nowadays, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise are household names. However, in the early '80s, they co-starred in the coming-of-age film The Outsiders when they were just getting started, and the film had a lasting impact on Cruise.
Tom Cruise is one of the most famous and popular action stars, mostly thanks to his long-running franchise, Mission: Impossible. The actor has never shied away from doing all kinds of risky stunts in the name of art, and one of his most iconic moves is his run. During an appearance on the podcast Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade, Lowe revealed Cruise might have learned his tricks from Estevez's trainer.

Going undercover at a Las Vegas pool party isn’t your typical mission — but then again, the heroes of Obliterated aren’t your typical government agents.
From the trio behind Cobra Kai, Netflix’s opens with a sun-soaked, booze-fueled pool party at Drai’s dayclub, but, as the above sneak peek reveals, several of the partygoers aren’t who they initially appear to be.
They’re actually a multidisciplinary team from several different government branches — CIA, Navy, Nsa — who are tracking a deadly nuclear device that could level the entire city. The squad consists of leader and CIA intelligence officer Ava Winters (Shelley Hennig), tactical lead and Navy Seal Chad McKnight (Nick Zano), fellow Seal Trunk (Terrence Terrell), Marine sniper Angela Gomez (Paola Lázaro), Nsa tech genius Maya Lerner (Kimi Rutledge), bomb-defusing expert Hagerty (C. Thomas Howell), and Air Force pilot Paul Yung (Eugene Kim).

It’s fair to say that season 2 of1923 has been nothing short of heartbreaking, frustrating, and intense. It’s also arguably the best season of the Paramount+ series so far, and we can’t take our eyes off it. We’re already five episodes in, and while much has happened to move our story forward, just as much has happened to stall it in place. With the finish line near, you’ll want to be sure and catch the impending fate of the Dutton family in the last episode. So when can you watch?
The 1923 season 2 finale premieres Sunday, April 6, 2025 at 12 a.m. Pt on Paramount+. That is season 2 episode 7, "A Dream and a Memory." This season is one episode shorter than season 1, however the super long run time definitely makes up for it. According to Collider, the last episode comes in at almost two hours! We're in for a long night.

This is a full scene-by-scene recap of 1923 Season 2 Episode 5, “Only Gunshots to Guide Us.” For a full episode discussion, please visit our 1923 Season 2 Episode 5 review.
Father Renaud is panicking as cowboys run a herd of cattle through town. He’s pressed against a door to keep himself safe.
He’s on the way to the Cattlemen’s Club, a saloon and steakhouse, to peer into the windows. The nasty marshal is talking with Anders (C. Thomas Howell has a name!) inside about Teonna.
(Lauren Smith/Paramount+)
The marshal is waxing poetic about the lack of evolution the Native Americans have chosen, calling Teonna a bridge between the two worlds. She decided to remain an animal, lusting for the kill, and like the wolf, must be erased from this planet.
Anders hasn’t seen her, despite what the cowboy who rode with him said. Now, the cowboy changes his tune.

The patron saint of taciturn, road-worn men with good hearts and troubled minds smiles on Spencer Dutton in this week’s 1923.
After weeks of violent misadventures, Jake and Cara’s nephew winds up on a train bound for home during the episode. We’re not saying he’s in the clear — because he’s already run into trouble on the rails once this season — but he’s a lot better off than when he was trying to stay up all night in a boxcar full of sketchballs, no?

Episode 5 of the second season of 1923 offers the hope of winter's end but, as the title indicates, "Only Gunshots to Guide Us," spring will arrive with a bang. As Father Renaud (Sebastian Roche) and Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) continue to hunt for Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves), Pete Plenty Clouds (Jeremy Gauna), and Runs His Horse (Michael Spears), both Alexandra (Julie Schlaepfer) and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) remain on arduous journeys to reunite.
After Episode 4, Alexandra seemed to be in a better position than Spencer, but it quickly becomes clear in the latest episode that the opposite is true. There's no real information about the Duttons in Montana in "Only Guns to Guide Us," but with Spencer getting closer to home, war appears imminent.
The plight of women during the early 20th century and how it manifests itself in different settings is evident, as is the ever-present class divide, in episode 5 of 1923's second season.

Paramount+’s 1923 season two episode five finds Alexandra enduring yet another devastating event in her journey to reunite with Spencer. Meanwhile, Spencer’s luck finally changes, and his trip to Bozeman takes a few steps forward. Episode five, “Only Gunshots to Guide Us,” doesn’t check in on the Duttons as they endure the winter at the Yellowstone Ranch but does show Teonna’s pursuers are closing in on her in Texas.
The following is a recap, so there are plenty of spoilers ahead!
Marshal Kent (Ross Crain) and Father Renauld (Sebastian Roche) question the men from Ja Ranch about Teonna’s whereabouts. The boss, Anders (C. Thomas Howell), is reluctant to admit he’s seen Teonna but does so only when Father Renauld confirms Kent’s story that Teonna murdered two nuns in their sleep.

War has been one of the quintessential experiences of human life on the planet since the beginning of time, and this is why the war movie genre continues to produce a plethora of cinematic hits. War movies usually depict historical battles in terms of which side was victorious and which side was defeated—the men or women who earned medals pinned to their uniforms, and the ones whose names are engraved on memorial walls. In the end, it's about the winners and the losers.
But war is rarely reduced to such simple terms and is, in fact, devastating, brutal and senseless. Some of the most beloved and watched war movies of all time completely capture this reality. They show that war often takes too many innocent lives, erases entire cultures and indigenous peoples, and exacts a heavy toll on even the most courageous heroes.

C. Thomas Howell is all set to join 1923? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
The wild frontier of television just got a little wilder with the return of Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater in 1923, the Yellowstone prequel that keeps expanding its rugged universe.
Alongside her, Michael Spears saddles up as Runs His Horse, while Jeremy Gauna rides in as Pete Plenty Clouds. Their latest chapter takes an unexpected turn when Teonna’s father unknowingly strikes a deal with the ranch workers they had been bunking with, leading to an uneasy alliance.
A Brief Stay for C. Thomas Howell?
As fate would have it, the family’s paths cross with a new face on the ranch, C. Thomas Howell, who steps into the role of foreman Anders. But before fans get too comfortable, there’s a catch! IMDb only lists him for a single episode, thus making his stay uncertain in the series.

In any conversation about the greatest film critics of all time, lists that would include such prominent voices as Paulene Kael and Leornard Maltin, would have to also include Roger Ebert. Alongside fellow Chicago film critic Gene Siskel, Ebert brought film reviews to a national audience on his various television shows, and his books of film criticism are some of the best of all time.
One of the things that made Roger Ebert one of the most entertaining film critics of all time was that it was equally interesting to hear him discuss films that he loved as it was to listen to him tear into the ones that he hated. One of the genres of movies that Ebert could be the harshest on were horror films, and his least favorite movies in the genre were often ones that cared more about being shocking and gross than being interesting.

On top of telling a story about rodeo life, Jake Allyn’s Ride (now streaming on Paramount+) pushes viewers into its bruising highs and devastating lows. As both director and star, Allyn delivers a film that mixes the raw intensity of the sport with an unflinching look at addiction, family, and sacrifice. With veteran actors like C. But does it manage to stay on its feet, or does it stumble under the weight of its ambitions?

Action shows have been one of the most popular sources of entertainment for decades. Action TV series have been produced on a regular basis — some focusing on long-term, serialized stories of heroes while others have taken a shorter approach more suitable for a binging session. All things considered, however, the genre is almost as popular on TV as it is in the movies.
The action genre has produced incredibly memorable shows that can hold their own with blockbuster counterparts like Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible franchise. The genre has also proven to be incredibly versatile and has experimented with a range of formats, including real-time seasons, anthologies, and merging with other genres. All of these have combined to create brilliant shows that have thriving fandoms years if not decades later.

The Outsiders was bursting with future star power, including Ralph Macchio, when it was released in 1983. Alongside Macchio, the Francis Ford Coppola-directed film starred a slew of major Hollywood actors including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, and Diane Lane. The Outsiders is based on the seminal 1967 novel by S.E. Hinton, and follows two gangs of young people — the poor greasers and the more wealthy Socs — as they fight for dominance in Tulsa, Oklahoma during the 1960s.
The film was a box office success, earning over $25 million against a $10 million budget (via Box Office Mojo) and critical acclaim. In the years since its release, The Outsiders spawned both a 1990 sequel TV series and a Tony Award-winning 2023 Broadway musical. The 1983 movie's impact also extends to its stars, as just one year after its release, Ralph Macchio would go on to play Daniel Larusso in 1984's The Karate Kid.

Francis Ford Coppola is responsible for half a century of onscreen leading men. The greatest Hollywood actors of the later 20th century, from Al Pacino to Robert De Niro to Robert Duvall? They also got their big break in one of the first two "Godfather" films. That's not to say these actors wouldn't have been stars without Coppola's movies (none of them are exactly one-hit wonders), but the New Hollywood truly put several artists in the right place at the right time to produce classic films.
In 1983, Coppola did it again with "The Outsiders," adapting S.E. Hinton's 1967 coming-of-age novel about several low-class teenage "Greasers" in 1960s Oklahoma. Beginning in the late 1960s and spreading into the 1970s, American cinema was revolutionized by the New Hollywood movement. At the forefront of this movement was a crew of directors from different entertainment disciplines who spoke to the exploding youth counterculture with classics like "Bonnie and Clyde," "The Graduate," and "M*A*S*H." The world felt like it was going mad, but the movies were somehow helping us make sense of this descent. Before moviegoers could adjust to this newfangled mode of motion picture art, the film brats arrived. Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg rattled the industry's cage in wildly different ways. It was a glorious time. Then studios, with the perhaps unwitting assistance of Lucas and Spielberg, locked in on a formula: They could make hundreds of millions of dollars off a single movie if they hit the right commercial buttons.

Here's the backstory behind Criminal Minds serial killer Cat Adams, played by Aubrey Plaza. CBS historically has good luck when it comes to producing hit procedurals, from CSI to NCIS and their many, many spinoffs. One of their most popular arrived in 2005 with Criminal Minds, which follows an elite team of FBI profilers who hunt down vicious serial killers.
Most episodes saw the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) having to deal with a new killer (or killers) with unique motives or methods, including the nightmarish likes of Tim Curry's "Prince of Darkness" or C. Thomas Howell's George Foyet, Aka "The Reaper." However, among all the Criminal Minds guest stars, one of the most well known remains Aubrey Plaza. Plaza's character, Cat Adams, is one of the most popular UnSubs to have appeared on the show - especially since she was the intellectual rival of fan-favorite Bau agent Spencer Reid.

One of the prolific young actor ensembles in Hollywood in the 1980s was the Brat Pack. A label coined by journalist David Blum in 1985, the Brat Pack was a play on the term, the Rat Pack, led by Frank Sinatra in the '60s. The core group consisted of Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, and Andrew McCarthy. By Blum's definition, the Brat Pack was composed of the main young actors in the two successful 1985 movies "The Breakfast Club" and "St. Elmo's Fire."
The actors in the Brat Pack would appear together in a number of films throughout the '80s and early '90s, including projects before 1985. A fan-favorite Western film starring the iconic Burt Lancaster will arrive on Prime Video soon. 1971's Lawman will hit the streaming platform on December 1.
Directed by Michael Winner, Lawman follows Lancaster's Jared Maddox, a marshal from Bannock trailing five cowhands from Sabbath, who shoot up his town, leading to the death of an elderly citizen. Maddox demands Sabbath's Sheriff hand them over, threatening to murder them in cold blood if they fail to surrender to him in twenty-four hours. However, the culprits work for one of the town's wealthiest men, Victor Bronson, who attempts to pay off Maddox. The Bannock marshal cannot be bought, inevitably leading to an epic showdown only the best Westerns can deliver.

Red Dawn, Patrick Swayze's epic historical action film, will be streaming on Prime Video starting Dec. 1. The film follows a group of teenage guerilla warriors during a fictional World War III.
Red Dawn stars Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson and Jennifer Grey. The film is set in an alternate reality in the 1980s where the United States was invaded by the Soviets, Warsaw Pact and Communist Latin American forces. Swayze and his friends became the "Wolverines", fighters who resisted the occupation of their small town in Soviet-occupied Colorado. The film was the first to be released in the U.S. with a PG-13 rating after the Motion Picture Association modified its rating system in 1984. The revised film ratings came after complaints of violence and gore in PG-rated films, including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins.

Emilio Estevez made his big screen debut at the age of 11 in the film "Badlands," Terrence Malick's mood drama starring Emilio's father Ramón Estévez, who was better known by his screen name Martin Sheen. When Emilio was 14, he flew with his father to the Philippines for another film shoot. Sheen was playing the lead role in Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now," and the young Emilio was hired to appear as an extra. Sadly, his scenes were cut, but Estevez was inspired by his experience to write a play called "Echoes of an Era," and perform in the lead role. He was officially an actor like his father.
After graduating high school, Estevez eschewed college and entered show business. What followed was a decades-long and prolific career that brought him into the center of the Hollywood mainstream. In the 1980s, Estevez was part of a generation of rising actors...

Fact: E.T. is a Halloween movie. Make no mistake about that. The landmark Steven Spielberg blockbuster primarily takes place in October with the most iconic sequence — that being the moon-tinted bike ride, which has become the literal logo for Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment — goes down on All Hallow’s Eve. So, consider this episode a timely treat.
At last month’s Creep I.E. Aftermath in Ontario, California, Halloweenies executive producer Michael Roffman and Scare You to Sleep creator Shelby Scott presided over an E.T. reunion panel featuring stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, C. Thomas Howell, and Matthew De Meritt. Together, they share personal anecdotes on the film’s shoot and reflect on the way the film went on to shape modern Americana — seemingly overnight.

The 1980s were full of sweet and relatable romance films set in high school, and many of them have held up over the years, making it easy to revisit their compelling tales of love. John Hughes is an undeniable force in '80s coming-of-age films, approaching them as a writer and director with a care and understanding for their subjects. Other directors joined Hughes in creating beloved '80s teen romance films that could be thoroughly enjoyed years later, including Cameron Crowe and Martha Coolidge.
The best romance films set in high school utilize social cues and adolescent feelings to provide obstacles for their main characters. The pressure to fit in with others, the insecure feelings associated with unrequited love, and social cliques that seem impossible to diffuse are all foundational concepts for teen romance films.
