Crime procedurals are a genre of show that translates across borders and cultures, with South Korean television, or K-dramas, particularly prolific in producing crime thrillers. When he passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009, we lost an icon who was never really recognized as the legend he is in his time. In the years since many Patrick Swayze movies have become cult favourites, and with a Road House remake recently a hit, we decided now would be a good time to pick the five best Patrick Swayze movies.

Red Dawn (1984)

John Millius’s cold war “what if” thriller goes down in the history books as the first-ever PG-13 movie. It was also Patrick Swayze’s first major leading role, with him best known up to this point for a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders.

Chris Hemsworth's rise to stardom was just about as swift as it gets. Unless you're from Australia, you'd likely never seen the handsome young actor before he up and stole the opening scene of J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" in 2009. Two years later, he would become a global superstar as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Thor. From there, it's been smooth sailing for the hotsy-totsy Aussie.

Interestingly, had it all gone according to schedule, "Thor" wouldn't have been Hemsworth's first starring role. In 2009, prior to the release of "Star Trek," Hemsworth was cast as the hunky, jockish Curt in Drew Goddard's "Cabin in the Woods." The hilarious genre mash-up was really more of an ensemble piece, but Hemsworth came on strong -- which was completely intentional given the character's surprising death early in the film. Had Goddard's movie been released as originally planned on February 5, 2010, Hemsworth's profile would've sharply ascended in Hollywood.

Introduced in season 3 as Tyreese's (Chad Coleman) cool, tough sister, Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) quickly gets thrown through the ringer: She nearly dies from the flu, gets captured by cannibals, her boyfriend gets eaten by said cannibals, her brother Tyreese gets bitten by a walker, and then she has to watch as her new boyfriend is beaten to death with a bat.

The 86-year-old legendary filmmaker was honored with the 50th annual AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, which is given to someone “whose talent has in a fundamental way advanced the film art; whose accomplishment has been acknowledged by scholars, critics, professional peers and the general public’ and whose work has stood the test of time.”

It’s fair to say that season 2 of1923 has been nothing short of heartbreaking, frustrating, and intense. It’s also arguably the best season of the Paramount+ series so far, and we can’t take our eyes off it. After weeks of violent misadventures, Jake and Cara’s nephew winds up on a train bound for home during the episode. We’re not saying he’s in the clear — because he’s already run into trouble on the rails once this season — but he’s a lot better off than when he was trying to stay up all night in a boxcar full of sketchballs, no?

Episode 5 of the second season of 1923 offers the hope of winter's end but, as the title indicates, "Only Gunshots to Guide Us," spring will arrive with a bang. As Father Renaud (Sebastian Roche) and Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) continue to hunt for Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves), Pete Plenty Clouds (Jeremy Gauna), and Runs His Horse (Michael Spears), both Alexandra (Julie Schlaepfer) and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) remain on arduous journeys to reunite.

After Episode 4, Alexandra seemed to be in a better position than Spencer, but it quickly becomes clear in the latest episode that the opposite is true. There's no real information about the Duttons in Montana in "Only Guns to Guide Us," but with Spencer getting closer to home, war appears imminent.

The plight of women during the early 20th century and how it manifests itself in different settings is evident, as is the ever-present class divide, in episode 5 of 1923's second season.

Paramount+’s 1923 season two episode five finds Alexandra enduring yet another devastating event in her journey to reunite with Spencer. Meanwhile, Spencer’s luck finally changes, and his trip to Bozeman takes a few steps forward. Episode five, “Only Gunshots to Guide Us,” doesn’t check in on the Duttons as they endure the winter at the Yellowstone Ranch but does show Teonna’s pursuers are closing in on her in Texas.

Thomas Howell), is reluctant to admit he’s seen Teonna but does so only when Father Renauld confirms Kent’s story that Teonna murdered two nuns in their sleep.

The Outsiders was bursting with future star power, including Ralph Macchio, when it was released in 1983. Alongside Macchio, the Francis Ford Coppola-directed film starred a slew of major Hollywood actors including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, and Diane Lane. The Outsiders is based on the seminal 1967 novel by S.E. Hinton, and follows two gangs of young people — the poor greasers and the more wealthy Socs — as they fight for dominance in Tulsa, Oklahoma during the 1960s.

The film was a box office success, earning over $25 million against a $10 million budget (via Box Office Mojo) and critical acclaim. In the years since its release, The Outsiders spawned both a 1990 sequel TV series and a Tony Award-winning 2023 Broadway musical. The 1983 movie's impact also extends to its stars, as just one year after its release, Ralph Macchio would go on to play Daniel Larusso in 1984's The Karate Kid.

Before moviegoers could adjust to this newfangled mode of motion picture art, the film brats arrived. Then studios, with the perhaps unwitting assistance of Lucas and Spielberg, locked in on a formula: They could make hundreds of millions of dollars off a single movie if they hit the right commercial buttons.

A fan-favorite Western film starring the iconic Burt Lancaster will arrive on Prime Video soon. 1971's Lawman will hit the streaming platform on December 1.

Directed by Michael Winner, Lawman follows Lancaster's Jared Maddox, a marshal from Bannock trailing five cowhands from Sabbath, who shoot up his town, leading to the death of an elderly citizen. Maddox demands Sabbath's Sheriff hand them over, threatening to murder them in cold blood if they fail to surrender to him in twenty-four hours. However, the culprits work for one of the town's wealthiest men, Victor Bronson, who attempts to pay off Maddox. The Bannock marshal cannot be bought, inevitably leading to an epic showdown only the best Westerns can deliver.

Red Dawn, Patrick Swayze's epic historical action film, will be streaming on Prime Video starting Dec. 1. The film follows a group of teenage guerilla warriors during a fictional World War III.

Red Dawn stars Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson and Jennifer Grey. The film is set in an alternate reality in the 1980s where the United States was invaded by the Soviets, Warsaw Pact and Communist Latin American forces. Swayze and his friends became the "Wolverines", fighters who resisted the occupation of their small town in Soviet-occupied Colorado. The film was the first to be released in the U.S. with a PG-13 rating after the Motion Picture Association modified its rating system in 1984. The revised film ratings came after complaints of violence and gore in PG-rated films, including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins.
