Devon Walker is feeling sanguine about leaving Saturday Night Live. Although he said in an Instagram announcement of his departure that his former workplace could be “toxic as hell,” Walker tells Rolling Stone he’s “grateful” for the experience.

Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly opens with a virtuosic single-take shot, a winding journey through a film set that introduces the small army required to manufacture a single moment of on-screen magic. We land on Jay Kelly (George Clooney), a movie star of the highest magnitude, a product of this intricate system.
The film immediately plants its philosophical flag with a quote from Sylvia Plath: “It’s a hell of a responsibility to be yourself. It’s easier to be somebody else or nobody at all.” For a man who has made a living being somebody else, the responsibility of being Jay Kelly is about to become crushingly apparent.

War Of The Worlds 2025 Climbs Prime Video Charts Despite Harsh Criticism!(Photo Credit –Prime Video)
Few sci-fi stories have stood the test of time as beautifully as H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds. Last month, Prime Video released a new adaptation starring Ice Cube and Eva Longoria. Despite the star-studded cast and a fresh take on the classic alien invasion story, critics largely panned the film, giving it a dismal 2% on Rotten Tomatoes. IMDb users weren’t impressed either, rating it just 2.5/10.

Wednesday Star Luis Guzmán shaded his former co-star Jennifer Lopez during a recent appearance on Hot Ones alongside his castmates, Jenna Ortega, Emma Meyers, Joy Sunday, and Georgie Farmer.
The actor, who plays Gomez Addams in the Netflix series, was asked to describe his former co-stars in one word during the interview. While he described Adam Sandler as “amazing,” he gave a lukewarm response to Lopez, saying only “okay.”
Guzman, who has had a nearly five-decade-long career, has worked with several acclaimed figures of the industry. He has shared screen with Sandler in several movies, including Punch-Drunk Love, Anger Management, and The Do-Over. Guzmán previously worked with Jennifer Lopez in the 1998 film Out of Sight.

This week, with Ryan Lattanzio covering the Venice International Film Festival, David Ehrlich joined “Screen Talk” co-host Anne Thompson from the mountains of Telluride, Colorado to discuss the 60-feature line-up for the Labor Day celebration of cinema.
David gives us early reviews of several films that are already breaking in Venice: He enjoyed Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” starring his usual suspects Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, but wants to see the director get more ambitious next time. He also enjoyed Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly,” in which George Clooney plays a version of himself, but would have liked Adam Sandler to have more to do.
At Telluride, Anne and David are excited to see two book adaptations: Chloé Zhao’s tearjerker “Hamnet” starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, and Philippa Lowthorpe’s “H is for Hawk,” starring Claire Foy, which deal with grief for a lost child and a father, respectively.

As of the publish time of this story, four members of Saturday Night Live’s season 50 cast aren’t returning for season 51, which is set to begin Oct. 4. The departures of Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim and Devon Walker make for the largest cast turnover since 2022, when eight performers left.
It’s also far from unprecedented in SNL’s history — in fact, the show has rarely gone more than a few years without a significant overhaul of its cast. Over the half-century Saturday Night Live has been airing on NBC, cast shakeups have roiled the show numerous times, with some performers leaving of their own accord and others let go for a myriad of reasons ranging from budget cuts to a desire by SNL mastermind Lorne Michaels for fresh faces and perspectives.
“The cryptic hiring protocols extend to staying hired,” writes Susan Morrison in her biography of Michaels, Lorne:...

For the past 10 weeks, KPop Demon Hunters has been dominating Netflix's global chart. This week, it reached 236 million views to become Netflix's most-watched movie of all time, surpassing Red Notice (2021) at 230.9 million views. However, there have been a few Netflix films that have briefly dethroned the animated musical on their weekly Global Top 10 chart.
These titles include Tyler Perry's psychological thriller Straw, Charlize Theron's superhero sequel The Old Guard 2, Adam Sandler's sequel Happy Gilmore 2, which held the top spot for two straight weeks, and, most recently, the romantic dramedy My Oxford Year. However, this week, KPop Demon Hunters took back the first-place spot on Netflix's Global Top 10 chart.

The Academy Awards may be a distinctly American tradition, but nowadays Oscar-spotting starts in Europe. Thanks to recent Palme d'Or-turned-Best Picture winners like Parasite and Anora, the Cannes Film Festival has reemerged an early harbinger of Oscar success. The primary launching pad for awards season, though, is the Venice Film Festival, which kicked off its 82nd edition on Wednesday with a coterie of big stars — George Clooney! Julia Roberts! Emma Stone! — sauntering their way down the red carpet and past the global press corps.

Thirty years ago, Don Ohlmeyer gave Saturday Night Live legends Adam Sandler and Chris Farley the ax. It’s funny how no one will ever make a nostalgic biopic about O.J.’s old buddy.
Naked Gun actor and former It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia guest star Paul Walter Hauser is playing the late comedy great Farley in a forthcoming biopic about one of SNL’s all-time most popular cast members, and the Emmy-winner is doing his due diligence on a role that means so much to so many members of the entertainment community. Despite a rough sinus infection, George Clooney put on a brave face to be at the red carpet world premiere of his new movie, Jay Kelly, in Venice last night.
The infection knocked him out of the festival’s press conference and other media duties, however, and we now understand from sources that he also won’t be able to fly to Telluride where the movie is getting its North American premiere this weekend. Planes and sinus infections are a no-no and he’s under doctor’s orders. Wise.
A spokesperson for Clooney told us: “Unfortunately, because of the sinus and ear infections that George is currently suffering from, his doctors have told him that it would be impossible for him to fly to Telluride to support his new film, Jay Kelly. George Clooney has long been one of Hollywood's most magnetic screen presences, admired for his refined charm and striking looks. He first captured attention as Dr. Doug Ross on ER (1994–1999), earning two Emmy nominations. From there, he transitioned seamlessly into cinema with standout performances in From Dusk till Dawn (1996), Out of Sight (1998), Three Kings (1999), and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000).
Stardom soon followed with Steven Soderbergh's stylish Ocean's trilogy (2001–2007). Clooney's career has also brought critical acclaim, winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Syriana (2005) and receiving additional nominations for Best Actor for Michael Clayton (2007), Up in the Air (2009), and The Descendants (2011). Leading up to the 51st season of "Saturday Night Live" premiere on October 4, 2025, showrunner Lorne Michaels teased a "shake-up" at the late night sketch show (via Puck). After making good on that promise by axing cast members like Devon Walker, the Norm Macdonald-esque Michael Longfellow, and single season featured player Emil Wakim, one of the biggest changes yet came with word that longtime cast member Heidi Gardner would not be returning to "SNL."
Vulture was the first to report on Heidi Gardner's departure from "SNL." As for the reasoning, it's not clear whether Gardner wasn't asked back or if she chose to leave the show after eight seasons. However,...

Julia Roberts defended her new film “After the Hunt” at a heated Venice Film Festival press conference, where the star was questioned about the movie’s statements surrounding the #MeToo movement and cancel culture.
In the thriller, set in the world of higher education, Roberts stars as a beloved college professor who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when her mentee (Ayo Edebiri) accuses a friend and colleague (Andrew Garfield) of crossing a line.
Roberts waved off an early question about whether “After the Hunt” was undermining the feminist movement. The journalist who raised the question said the movie had “caused controversy” among festivalgoers who felt the story “revives old arguments” about believing woman who speak up about sexual assault allegations. Though Roberts didn’t directly address the query, the actor said she wants the movie to bring up difficult conversations.

George Clooney braved a sinus infection and a rainstorm on Thursday night for the Venice premiere of Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly,” which soaked in an 8.5-minute standing ovation.
Clooney walked the red carpet on the Lido with his co-star Adam Sandler, who made a rare appearance in a tux. The two leading men play a Hollywood power couple of sorts in the Netflix film, which judging by the Venice applause-o-meter, could be a major Oscar contender. In “Jay Kelly,” Clooney is an aging movie star and Sandler is his manager who has sacrifices everything for his most precious client.
As the crowd cheered during the ovation, Clooney leaned over and kiss his wife Amal, seated behind him. He hugged Sandler and Baumbach throughout the applause. The film ended at nearly 1 a.m. during a vicious thunderstorm, as the crowd poured into the soaking wet streets in a sea of umbrellas.

Heidi Gardner is leaving “Saturday Night Live” after eight seasons, multiple sources tell Variety.
The news comes amid a shake-up at the NBC sketch comedy series, which this week saw the departure of Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim and Devon Walker ahead of Season 51.
Last season, Gardner was the longest-tenured current female cast member. In Season 49, she appeared in more sketches than any other cast member. She is well-known for her “Weekend Update” characters including the teen movie critic Bailey Gismert and Angel, “every boxer’s girlfriend from every movie about boxing ever.”
Outside of “SNL,” Gardner has appeared in “Shrinking” alongside Jason Segel, as well as “The Other Two” and the Adam Sandler basketball movie “Hustle.”
NBC declined to make producers available for comment.

George Clooney’s Netflix comedy Jay Kelly launched at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday evening and critics are starting to weigh in.
Noah Baumbach‘s new film follows a famous movie actor named Jay Kelly (Clooney) and his devoted manager Ron (Adam Sandler) as they embark on a whirlwind and unexpectedly profound journey through Europe. Along the way, both men are forced to confront the choices they’ve made, the relationships with their loved ones and the legacies they’ll leave behind.
Written by Baumbach and Emily Mortimer, the film’s ensemble also includes Laura Dern, Billy Crudup and Riley Keough.
The critical response so far has skewed positive, with many praising Clooney and Sandler. On the flip side, a couple of outlets have remarked that the film falls on the “soft” side, and one UK national publication had some particularly stinging words.

Take it all with a grain of salt — for now — but the members of Please Don’t Destroy may be heading in three different directions, two of which would affect the future of Saturday Night Live.

In the absence of George Clooney at some of the events of this year’s Venice Film Festival (he is recovering from a sinus infection), it’s fitting that one of co-star Adam Sandler’s favorite lines in “Jay Kelly,” his third film working with director Noah Baumbach is “You’re Jay Kelly, but I’m Jay Kelly, too.”
While it is said in a wildly different context in the film, the line does speak to the already fast-moving awards narrative surrounding “Jay Kelly,” even before the film first screened at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. It may be Clooney who stars as the titular “Jay Kelly,” but it is Sandler who is already getting the most Oscar buzz for his supporting role as Ron, Kelly’s longtime manager and friend.

George Clooney proved again that he’s Hollywood’s consummate professional by fighting back illness to make the red carpet for the world premiere of his new movie, Jay Kelly, at the Venice International Film Festival.
Until he strolled across the carpet, arm in arm with his wife, Amal Clooney, to enter Venice’s Sala Grande Thursday night, it was unclear whether Clooney would make it. He is in town to promote the Noah Baumbach-directed dramedy — in which he plays the titular character, a very George Clooney-esque movie star in the midst of a personal crisis — but pulled out of press and media commitments over the first two days of the festival due to a bad sinus infection.
Clooney missed the Jay Kelly press conference earlier today and cut short some media commitments on Wednesday. He also reportedly bailed on a swanky private dinner with Baumbach and fellow cast members.

It’s been six years now since Benny and Josh Safdie unleashed Uncut Gems on the world. Their ultra-stressful thriller – following Adam Sandler’s Howard Ratner as he makes possibly disastrous financial decisions around the procurement of a precious diamond – was a hugely acclaimed cinematic adrenaline-shot, following up their previous hit Good Time. In the meantime, the brothers have been working on separate projects. Not only has Benny starred in the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, but he’s been hard at work on The Smashing Machine, his biopic of Mma fighter Mark Kerr starring Dwayne Johnson, while Josh has been directing...

Noah Baumbach turned 55 last September. And he works in the movie business, which has been in serious disarray over the past few years. It’s possible he would have made “Jay Kelly” without those two factors, but it’s even likelier that in this case, timing is everything.
“Jay Kelly,” which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday, is suffused with melancholy for a business that seems to be on shaky ground and filled with a nostalgia for times gone by. For people of Baumbach’s age and his star George Clooney’s age (64), it is very much a movie of its time, which lends gravity...

In “Jay Kelly,” George Clooney plays a movie star very much like George Clooney. By that, I don’t simply mean that the outlines of Clooney’s career and that of the character sync up just so (though they do). As the movie is conceived, Jay Kelly, a popular and prestigious Hollywood actor for more than three decades, with an array of crowd-pleasing dramas, high-end action hits, and robust awards films behind him, is a character who has been constructed around the very DNA of George Clooney’s personality. He’s got that same brash feel-good charm, that effortless smooth quickness of mind, and more than that he’s got that quality of finely honed grinning sincerity — the ability to talk to anyone and make them feel like he’s really listening, that he’s eager to connect, not because he’s putting on an act but because that’s just the way he is.

It is not an original idea to make a movie about a movie star. Think Notting Hill, The Bodyguard, Tropic Thunder, America’s Sweethearts, A Star Is Born, Birdman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Bowfinger. I could go on. The greatest film I ever saw about a star was Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s masterful All About Eve, even if that was set on Broadway. It came out the same year as another masterpiece set in the industry, Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard, which showed the dark side of Hollywood when they decided they were done with you. “It’s the pictures that got small,” Norma Desmond utters after declaring she is still “big.”
Both are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year and remarkably are as fresh, even as perceptive, as when they were released. Eve still to this day shares the record for the most Oscar nominations with 14, winning six...

George Clooney has had to scale back his promotional activities at this year’s Venice International Film Festival for his new movie, “Jay Kelly.”
After arriving in Venice earlier this week, the actor missed the festival’s “Jay Kelly” press conference early Thursday. The festival moderator told attendees Clooney’s absence was due to a “bad sinus infection” and that the star was “very sorry” he could not be there. “Jay Kelly” writer-director Noah Baumbach, for his part, noted with a laugh, “Even movie stars get sick!”
The conference’s moderator also told attendees that Clooney “should” still be able to make an appearance at the film’s red carpet world premiere Thursday night.

Adam Sandler has dabbled in enough dramatic roles that audiences often think he’s more reliable in that genre than his career suggests. After performances in films like Punch Drunk Love, Reign Over Me and Uncut Gems, it’s not too out of the ordinary to expect Sandler to sideline his comedic sensibilities for a movie. He will have another serious role in the upcoming Netflix movie, Jay Kelly, which comes from Noah Baumbach. At the Telluride Film Festival, you never know who is going to stroll past you on the street, sit across from you on a gondola or catch a movie next to you in a cinema. This year, it might just be George Clooney, Werner Herzog, Jodie Foster, Jeremy Allen White, Wagner Moura, Claire Foy, Adam Sandler, Colin Farrell, Zoey Deutch, Dustin Hoffman, Riz Ahmed or one of the Skarsgards, father Stellan or son Alexander. They all have films in the lineup — which was announced by the fest on Thursday morning, includes over 60 features and shorts from more than 30 countries, and appears in full at the bottom of this post — and are expected to be in the Rockies over Labor Day weekend, along with subjects of documentaries that will be playing at the fest including David Remnick and E. Fall festivals supply the nutrients for a rich diet of films for the next six months, all the way until Oscar night. Venice launched Wednesday with Francis Coppola paying tribute to his friend Werner Herzog. On Thursday, Telluride revealed its lineup, which plays over the Labor Day weekend.
He’s among the Telluride regulars who return for the summer-camp vibe in the mountains of Colorado. Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy usually throw a party. So does Muppet scion Lisa Henson. Oprah Winfrey is coming this year, even without a film, as are filmmakers Rian Johnson and Jason Reitman.
“Our community is a real community,” said festival director Julie Huntsinger in a phone interview with IndieWire. “And I want everybody to hang out together and have fun and watch.”
This year, Huntsinger wants to avoid the scheduling snafus that led so many loyal badge holders ($780 each) standing in line for hours without seeing the big films.

Film fans in Venice — as well as Netflix’s entire publicity team — breathed a disappointed sigh Thursday as George Clooney was a no-show on the Lido for the first press conference to promote his buzzy new movie, Jay Kelly. The actor also cut short some media commitments the day prior — and reportedly bailed on a swanky private dinner held with his director, Noah Baumbach, and fellow castmembers — due to a bad sinus infection.

A close source to the film tells The Hollywood Reporter that the team still hopes Clooney will recover enough to walk the red carpet for Jay Kelly‘s Venice world premiere, but that he is unlikely to sit through the film and not expected to travel to the upcoming Telluride Film Festival to support its next screening.
