20 Most Underrated Movies from the ’60’s That Are Still Relevant Today
Image
The 1960s gave us cinema classics that everyone knows, but what about the hidden gems? While 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Graduate get all the attention, countless underrated masterpieces from this revolutionary decade tackled themes that feel surprisingly current.

From political paranoia to technological anxiety, these films were way ahead of their time, addressing issues that wouldn’t become mainstream talking points until decades later. Many were box office failures or met with confusion, yet today they feel almost prophetic in their insight.

Let’s dive into twenty forgotten treasures that deserve a spot on your watchlist, movies that somehow predicted the world we’re living in today.

1. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) Laurence Harvey and Leslie Parrish in The Manchurian Candidate (1962) | Credits: United Artists

Talk about a movie that hits different in 2025. John Frankenheimer‘s paranoid thriller about political brainwashing and conspiracy feels like it was ripped from today’s headlines.

The 15 Best TV Shows Of The 1980s
Image
Media in the '80s was full of larger-than-life personalities, and TV was no exception. From high-concept action to star-driven crime solving and even confined comedies, bigger was usually better. Some of the best shows just kept growing, and a couple of the titles on this list of the best 1980s TV shows are still around (or at least have been revived very recently). Those that didn't last nonetheless made their mark on pop culture at large.

While not every show named below is an American show, they are all, to some degree, scripted. Even though the decade spawned many iconic talk shows and nonfiction programming, with hosts ranging from Phil Donahue to Robin Leach, those are best covered elsewhere. These are the stories that kept us coming back to their characters, actors, plots, and wild gimmicks, in a decade where money was seemingly no object, and TV tried to cater to every age group.

Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis star in a trailer with more pop than bubble gum for Freakier Friday
Image
The older I get, the more I realize that neither my parents nor teachers properly prepared me for the wonders and horrors of adulthood. At 44, bills are gobbling my bank account like Pac-Man eats Power Pellets, and a Nintendo Switch 2 costs nearly $900 Canadian. Inflation, baby! If I had switched bodies with an adult back in the day, it could have provided some much-needed perspective about the crushing reality of middle age. Today, Disney is ready to make people across the age spectrum feel the burn with its latest trailer for Freakier Friday, the long-awaited sequel to the 2003 comedy starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis.

The upcoming cinematic romp brings the bodyswap mechanic back with style as the switcharoo magic extends to other members of the Coleman family. In addition to the Freakier Friday trailer, Disney dropped a new poster for the film featuring Lohan and Curtis mugging for the...

Battle Of The Divas: Patti LuPone Says She’s ‘Not Friends’ With Audra McDonald, Disses Her ‘Gypsy’ Performance
Image
Broadway diva Patti LuPone stated during an interview that she and fellow theater star Audra McDonald are “not friends,” and she also appeared to slam McDonald’s performance in the recently revived Broadway musical Gypsy.

During an interview with The New Yorker, LuPone stated that McDonald was “not a friend” and that the two of them had drifted apart a long time ago. The reporter also mentioned that the singer did not care to elaborate.

LuPone was then asked by the reporter what she thought about McDonald’s performance as Mama Rose, the main character of Gypsy, for which she was praised in numerous reviews of this musical’s revival.

Schulman then mentioned that, upon hearing this question, the singer “stared at him in silence for 15 seconds.”

“Then she turned to the window and sighed, ‘What a beautiful day,'” he went on to say.

Since 1959, the role of Mama...

Columbo Inspired A Hit Spin-Off Series With Carrie Preston
Image
Everybody loves a cozy mystery. There's nothing quite like curling up with a warm blanket and a mystery show that wraps things up each episode, following a quirky mystery-solver of one kind or another. Whether we're following someone like murder mystery author Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) on "Murder, She Wrote" or traveling truth-teller Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) on "Poker Face," there's just something about cozy mysteries that soothes the soul. Now, there's another great cozy mystery series that's joined the crew: "Elsbeth," starring Carrie Preston as the titular crime-solver. The CBS show is actually a spin-off of "The Good Wife" and "The Good Fight," on which Preston initially played unconventional Chicago attorney Elsbeth Tascioni. On her own series, however, the character is working with the New York Police Department to solve crimes instead of prosecute them.

"Elsbeth" has been praised by critics for being a fun procedural that uses the...

Loretta Swit holds this Emmy record that may never be broken
Image
Emmy-winning actress Loretta Swit, best known for her iconic portrayal of Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan on M*A*S*H's 11 seasons, passed away on May 30 at the age of 87. Beyond her unforgettable role on the hit series, Swit leaves behind an incredible legacy, including an Emmy record that may never be broken.

From 1974 to 1983, Swit earned 10 consecutive Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, Variety, or Music Series nominations for playing "Hot Lips" — the most consecutive bids ever in this category. This incredible streak also ties Swit with Rhea Perlman for the most nominations in the category overall. However, Swit’s achievement stands out because all 10 of her nominations were consecutive, while Perlman’s 10 nods for playing Carla Tortelli in Cheers were not; Perlman missed a nomination in 1992 before earning her 10th in 1993.

Swit's first of two wins came on her seventh try, but unfortunately she wasn't there to accept it.

The Best Streaming Service To Watch Agatha Christie Adaptations
Image
Sometimes the real world can be a little overwhelming, and there are few things as soothing as curling up with your warm beverage of choice and a cozy mystery. Whether you prefer your detectives to be rumpled little guys with cigars or more refined figures with impeccable mustaches, there's just nothing quite like watching them solve crimes using their skills of perception and deduction. And while there have been a handful of spectacular mystery storytellers over the years, few can compare with the oeuvre of author Agatha Christie.

Over her expansive career, Christie wrote and published 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections. Her two most famous detectives were Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and over the years, dozens of film and TV adaptations were made about them and their exploits. While Christie could be understandably picky about the adaptations, quite a few of them are excellent. And there's great news...

‘Poker Face’ Season 2 Review: Rian Johnson Ups the Chaotic Ante in Peacock’s Comforting Howcatchem
Image
Sleuths, by and large, aren’t given the luxury of lying low. Worn-down beat detectives are always getting called to the next crime scene. Part-time investigators can’t resist a femme fatale’s desperate pleas (or ample pocketbook). But even when you set aside their professional obligations, puzzle-solvers usually don’t know what to do with themselves when the game is not yet afoot. Typically, gumshoes crack cases by compulsion.

Take Rian Johnson’s last “Knives Out” mystery: At the start of “Glass Onion,” Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) has grown frustrated by the pandemic’s stultifying effect on real-world brainteasers. With too much time off (and too much time moping in the tub), he thinks he’s going insane. He’s tried reading books, he’s tried playing games, he’s even enlisted help from a few similarly-minded peers (including Angela Lansbury and “Poker Face” star Natasha Lyonne). But nothing helps.

Audra McDonald Reacts to Her Historic 11th Tony Nomination, Reflects on “Tornado” of a Role in ‘Gypsy’
Image
Audra McDonald became the most Tony-nominated performer in history Thursday.

McDonald earned her 11th Tony nomination for her star role as Rose in Gypsy on Broadway. She had previously held the title in a tie with the late Julie Harris and Chita Rivera, who had 10 nominations each.

The actress is already the most-awarded performer in Tony history, with six Tony Award wins for her roles in 1994’s Carousel, 1996’s Master Class, 1998’s Ragtime, 2004’s A Raisin in the Sun, 2012’s Porgy and Bess and 2014’s Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.

And yet, when McDonald was told by her husband, fellow actor Will Swenson, that she had been nominated and learned she had set a new record, she was in a state of disbelief.

“I’m so grateful, and that’s overwhelming to think about. I’m so lucky. The one thing I always wanted to do growing up,...

Angela Lansbury Played A Beloved Agatha Christie Detective Before Joining Murder, She Wrote
Image
The great Angela Lansbury, winner of five Tony Awards and an honorary Oscar, and nominee for three Oscars and 18 Primetime Emmys besides -- passed away in 2022 at the age of 96, leaving a legacy so large, it cannot be measured by other mortals in the acting sphere. Lansbury was one of the more versatile actresses of her generation, playing innocent girls, scheming villainesses and murderers, heroes, crones, and loving matrons all with equal aplomb.

Lansbury was already a sizable celebrity by 1984 when she took the role of Jessica Fletcher on the long-running detective series "Murder, She Wrote." Fletcher was a retired English-teacher-turned-mystery-author who became embroiled in a series of murders in her small town of Cabot Cove, Maine. It was a cozy and intelligent series, buoyed by Lansbury's personable performance. The series ran for 247 episodes over 12 seasons. Frustratingly, Lansbury won none of 12 Emmys for which she was nominated for "Murder, She Wrote.

How 77-Year-Old Kathy Bates Could Break an Emmy Record With ‘Matlock’ Role
Image
Kathy Bates is winning cases on screen, and might win over Emmy voters next.

Bates, a titan of stage and screen, is poised to make Emmy history this year. If she receives a nomination for her magnetic performance in CBS’s “Matlock” reboot, she will become the oldest nominee ever in the lead drama actress category — at the age of 77.

Bates, born June 28, 1948, would be just two weeks past her birthday when the 2025 Emmy nominations are announced on July 17. Should her name be called — as many believe she’s the current frontrunner in the category — she would surpass the record held by Angela Lansbury, who was 70 when she received her final nomination in 1996 for “Murder, She Wrote.”

In “Matlock,” Bates plays Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a woman who reenters the legal world decades after retiring under seemingly tragic circumstances. The public version of her story is that she was widowed and...

12 Best Agatha Christie Movies, Ranked
Image
There's something very comforting about curling up with a cozy murder mystery. Easy-going, nostalgic, and usually low on violence after an inciting incident, they can be the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. Sure, a few people might get killed, but you know that the bad guys will (almost) always get their comeuppance and order in the movie's self-contained world will be restored by the time the credits roll. Little wonder that the format enjoyed a resurgence during the pandemic with millions seeking solace from the likes of "Murder, She Wrote" and "Columbo." These old shows are so relaxing, their modern-day equivalents like "Poker Face" even helped me beat insomnia a few years back.

Although the term "cozy mystery" didn't exist when she was writing, Agatha Christie is now regarded as the mother of the format. After introducing Hercule Poirot in her first novel, "The Mysterious Affair at...

'Mufasa' Cast and Crew Reveal the Movies on Their Shelf Next to 'The Lion King' Prequel [Exclusive]

What do The Fox and the Hound, Fantasia, and The Manchurian Candidate all have in common? They're all movies the cast and crew of Mufasa: The Lion King would place next to the Disney prequel's physical release on their shelves. Whether for sentimental reasons, a Disney connection, or because they prefer to be neat and alphabetized, each person featured has a different answer for how they're displaying the new release with the movies they own.

The video opens with one of the film's two stars, Kelvin Harrison Jr., who plays Taka/Scar. Considering Mufasa is all about brothers, he thinks The Fox and the Hound...

Popular Movie Opinions That Show People Don’t Understand Movies
Image
I never like telling people they’re wrong about what they think. But sometimes, when I hear people say things, it seems like they’re not telling you what they think at all. They’re repeating observations they’ve heard but haven’t really thought much about. Spend a few minutes digging through those thoughts, and suddenly they no longer make sense.

3 ‘Why Can’t Hollywood Cast Actual Teenagers to Play Teenagers?’

You’ve heard it before: Actors who play teenagers are too old, and that’s stupid. It was silly decades ago with kids on 90210 sporting receding hairlines, and it’s silly now with that one student on Stranger Things hiding deep wrinkles. How about you try casting a real teen for once? Not only will they look more convincing, they’ll act more convincingly because they’re authentically playing someone like themselves.

This 41-Year-Old British Fantasy Film Is Still 1 of the Greatest Gothic Horror Movies Ever
Image
From Snow White to Cinderella, the cinematic world has seen many retellings of these fairy tales over the years. Many of these tales, like Sleeping Beauty and Hansel and Gretel, crossed themselves to the horror genre with a mix of fantasy. One such film from the 80s doesn't just retell the tale of Little Red Riding Hood but turns the classic bedtime story into a dark, haunting and unforgettable cinematic experience. Neil Jordan's The Company of Wolves, rather than showing a colorful, happy fairytale, confronts the darker aspects of desire and fear. The film plunges the audience into its subconscious, revealing the unsettling truths hidden beneath the surface. Even 41 years later, this British fantasy film stands as one of the greatest gothic tales ever told in cinema.

The Company of Wolves is a screen adaptation of British author Angela Carter's 1979 short story of the same name. Carter, who...

Dcu's 'Lanterns' Casts 'Stranger Things' and NFL Star Sherman Augustus
Image
Stranger Things's Sherman Augustus is leaving the Midwest and heading to the DC Universe. The veteran actor and former NFL player recently joined the cast of Dcu's Lanterns, and is set to portray John Senior, the father of Aaron Pierre's character, John Stewart. John Senior is said to be the sort of parent who holds onto the past and is the definition of stubborn. His role will also be recurring, so viewers will see him often throughout the upcoming HBO drama series based on the DC Green Lantern comic. Augustus joins the show's stars, Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler (who will play Hal Jordan), and Kelly MacDonald, who signed on as the series' regular character Kerry (a sheriff who takes her job very seriously).

A team-up that involves a veteran and their new recruit will always be dramatic and action-packed with a splash of humor here and there.

One Of The Greatest Cold War Movies Ever Is Streaming For Free
Image
There was an all-too-brief time in the 1990s when films dealing with Cold War subject matter felt antiquated. With the break-up of the Soviet Union and the spread of democracy throughout Eastern Europe, we had good reason to believe that the West's steadfast example of representative government had won out in the global marketplace of ideas. Countries that had been driven into financial misery by corrupt authoritarian leaders were suddenly eager to get in on the capitalism game. Alas, as most of us already knew, there's not a more corruptible game in town when laws aren't enforced. One look at the daily headlines makes it clear that these Cold War movies aren't just relevant again -- they're grim dispatches from a bizarro world where the West came out on top of this chilling conflict.

It's a hard pill to swallow, and I wouldn't blame you if you're not in the...

Ever Wonder Where “Gaslighting” Comes From? This Oscar-Winning Film
Image
Eighty years before Isabella Rossellini landed her first Academy Award nomination, her mother won her first Oscar.

Ingrid Bergman was named best actress for her turn in Gaslight, George Cukor’s 1944 feature centering on a woman whose husband suggests that she is losing her sanity after they move into the London home where her aunt was murdered a decade earlier. The film also starred Angela Lansbury in her Oscar-nominated feature debut.

The Hollywood Reporter noted in June 1943 that Bergman, who had appeared in Casablanca the year prior, had been cast in Gaslight, Cukor’s first project since his World War II stint in the Army (earlier, he had directed such classics as 1940’s The Philadelphia Story). MGM released Gaslight in May 1944 to box office success and critical acclaim. It collected $4.6 million ($83 million today), and THR‘s review praised the “extraordinary” film as “the job for which Cukor admirers have been waiting.

Revisit the Most Memorable ‘I Am an Actor’ Speeches of the Last 30 Years
Image
What makes an actor? Since the very first Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1995, actors have shared what it means to work in Hollywood with the “I am an actor” speech.

The tradition began with Angela Lansbury, who detailed her accomplishments on screen at the inaugural SAG Awards: “I’ve been Elizabeth Taylor’s sister, Spencer Tracy’s mistress, Elvis’ mother, and a singing teapot,” she said. She reminded her peers that, “at one time or another, everyone loves the opportunity to act,” even a child with a creative imagination for playing pretend. And she embraced the spirit of the SAG Awards as a night dedicated to “the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it.”

In celebration of the 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards streaming live on Netflix on Sunday Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. Et / 5 p.m. Pt, join us on a trip down...

Angela Lansbury’s Oscar-Nominated Performance Makes This Creepy on a Classic Tale on Max a Must Watch
Image
Most millennials probably remember Angela Lansbury best as the voice of Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast, or as mystery writing sleuth Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote. Yet Lansbury's career encompassed many different types of roles, including some that might be shocking to fans who only know her from Disney movies. Case in point: her performance in The Picture of Dorian Gray, which brought her the second of three Oscar nominations as Best Supporting Actress. Lansbury may only have a limited amount of screen time in the 1945 horror fantasy, yet her performance is crucial to the film's central theme, which is that beauty on the outside doesn't necessarily project beauty on the inside.

David Edward Byrd Dies: ‘Follies’ Artist Whose Iconic Psychedelic Posters Spanned Rock And Broadway Was 83
Image
David Edward Byrd, an artist whose swirling, psychedelic, instantly entrancing illustrations gave the rock mecca Fillmore East its signature look and contributed at least two of the greatest, most recognizable posters in modern Broadway history for two beloved productions, Follies and Godspell, died Monday, February 3, at a hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was 83.

His husband, the artist Jolino Beserra, announced on social media. In a recent Facebook post, Beserra described Byrd’s failing health as the poster artist struggled with heart and lung problems, pneumonia and the effects of two bouts with Covid.

Born April 4, 1941, in Tennessee but raised in Miami Beach, Florida, Byrd studied painting and design at Carnegie-Mellon University in the mid-1960s, and from 1970 to 1979 taught at New York’s Pratt Institute.

In 1968, his friend Joshua White – who gave rock shows their distinctive psychedelic aura with his Joshua Light Show – recommended Byrd to rock impressario Bill Graham,...

Before 'Murder, She Wrote,' Angela Lansbury Starred in This Oscar Wilde Horror Adaptation Coming to a New Streamer Next Month
Image
The late great Angela Lansbury will always be remembered as one of the greatest television detectives of all time thanks to her 12-season run on Murder, She Wrote. Playing retired English teacher turned mystery novelist, Jessica Fletcher, she'd become widely beloved as an amateur sleuth using her reasoning from constructing fictional cases to crack real murders faster than the police officers around her in Cabot Cove and beyond. For as beloved as the role is though, it's only one piece in Lansbury's wildly successful career that has seen her become a Tony winner on-stage and achieve acclaim on the big screen, whether in live-action or as a talking teapot. One of her movies before she shot to true superstardom, the classic 1945 adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, is now set to come to Max on February 1.

Why Blake Lively Replaced Katherine Heigl In The Age Of Adaline
Image
"The Age of Adaline" — directed by Lee Toland Krieger and released in 2015 — is, put simply, a movie centered around the idea that Blake Lively is an inhumanly beautiful creature. This makes it hard to imagine that anyone else could have played Adaline Bowman, a woman unstuck in time who's incapable of aging. What you may not know, though, is that "Grey's Anatomy" veteran Katherine Heigl was originally supposed to play the titular role but ended up dropping out ... so what happened here?

Heigl, who originated the role of Dr. Izzie Stevens on the long-running ABC medical drama — and left the series partway through its 6th season — was initially cast in the film against Angela Lansbury, who was supposed to play Adaline's much older daughter, Flemming. Long before the movie came out, Heigl exited the project in 2010, according to a report in Deadline; at first, the outlet said that Heigl's departure was due to on-set strife.

Audra McDonald Dazzles In Broadway’s Revival Of ‘Gypsy’ As The First Black Rose
Image
In multiple outstanding reviews of the newly revived Broadway musical Gypsy, six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald has been applauded for her outstanding performance as the main character Mama Rose.

Gypsy, set during the Great Depression, follows Mama Rose as she desperately tries to support her daughter’s dreams of being a vaudeville star. When her daughter does eventually get her big break, Rose is left feeling abandoned after the success of her efforts.

A historically beloved story often referred to as the “Mt. Everest” of musical theater, the central role of Rose has been passed down through a series of impressive actresses over the years, from Ethel Merman in the 1959 original, and on to Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, Bette Midler and Patti LuPone.

An actress who is known for defying racial typecasting in her career, McDonald broke barriers in the 1994 revival of the play Carousel in which she...

Image
Claude Jarman Jr., who received a Juvenile Academy Award for his heart-tugging performance as the boy who adopts an orphaned fawn in the 1946 MGM classic The Yearling, died Sunday. He was 90.

Jarman died in his sleep of natural causes at his Marin County home in Kentfield, California, his wife of 38 years, Katie, told THR’s Scott Feinberg.

In films released in 1949, Jarman starred with Jeanette MacDonald in the Lassie movie The Sun Comes Up, played the brother of a rancher on the run (Robert Sterling) in Roughshod and reteamed with Yearling director Clarence Brown to portray a youngster out to prove the innocence of a Black man in Intruder in the Dust, based on the William Faulkner novel and filmed in Oxford, Mississippi.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Jimmy Fallon Recreate 'Perfect' Workout Scene
Image
As one of the most beloved actresses of this, or any generation, Jamie Lee Curtis has seemingly done it all. From battling Michael Myers in Halloween to hanging from a helicopter in True Lies, nothing has been off limits. Heck, she even put on a pair of leotards in the 1985 film Perfect to play an aerobics instructor, gyrating her way to stardom along with co-star John Travolta. Now, 40 years later, Curtis recreated the famous workout scene — this time with Jimmy Fallon — and the results are spectacular.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (seen below), Curtis and the late night host shared a laugh after watching the original scene from Perfect, which saw her and Travolta sweating up a storm in an aerobics class. The duo then revealed that there was some behind-the-scenes footage that had never been seen, and presented fans with a humorous recreation of the iconic moment,...

The 12 Best Movies To Watch If You Like The Substance
Image
Over the last few months, the world has gotten hooked on "The Substance." Despite some staunch naysayers (not to mention some nauseous audiences and a stubborn studio), the popularity of director Coralie Fargeat's balls-to-the-wall body horror farce is simply undeniable, from its unexpected box office haul to its virality across social media platforms like Letterboxd and TikTok. As the fervor steadily rose, so too did its awards buzz. The film has exceeded expectations across multiple Oscars precursors, including an unprecedented five Golden Globe nominations, leading awards experts to predict it could go all the way to Best Picture.

With this in mind, when someone falls in love with one film, the first thing they want to do is watch another one just like it. Thankfully, much like how Sue (Margaret Qualley) is derived from Elisabeth's (Demi Moore) spinal fluid, so too is "The Substance" a brainchild of countless cinematic inspirations.

Some of their films have been very dark, with the grimmest scenes depicting a villain's death. Many of these deaths have left audiences wondering if the films are appropriate for children. Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on December 20, 2024: Disney may make family movies, but there's nothing family-friendly about its villains' deaths. From horrific demises to fates worse than death, these are some of the darkest endings for Disney villains. Audra McDonald in 'Gypsy' Hailed as a 'Once in a Lifetime' Performance - See Opening Night Photos!
Image
Audra McDonald should start making room for her 7th Tony Award because it sounds like she might be winning another one, based on the reviews for her performance in Gypsy.

The legendary Broadway star, who holds the record for most acting Tony wins with six awards, celebrated the opening night of her new show on Thursday (December 19) at the Majestic Theatre in New York City.

Audra looked incredible in a red gown on the red carpet while attending the after party with co-stars Danny Burstein, Joy Woods, Jordan Tyson, and Kevin Csolak, among others.

Gypsy, suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, is Broadway’s ultimate tale of mothers and daughters, ambition and fame, and the lengths we’ll go in pursuit of the American dream. Previous actresses to lead Broadway productions include Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone.

‘Gypsy’ Theater Review: Audra McDonald Climbs the Mountain of One of the All-Time Greatest Musicals and Plants a Triumphant Flag
Image
Ask newer fans what the greatest musical of all time is and recency bias probably means the answer will be something like Rent or Les Misérables or Hamilton. Ask seasoned theater folk with wider frames of reference and Gypsy will usually land in the top three. For good reason. The 1959 warhorse is perhaps the ultimate tragicomic depiction of showbiz struggle, which makes it a strong contender for the ultimate Broadway musical.

It’s a cliché to call Rose, the archetypal pushy stage mother at the show’s center, the King Lear of musical theater. But that’s hard to dispute when you watch a consummate performer like Audra McDonald pour her heart and soul and every ounce of her gumption, her supple vocals and finely nuanced acting skills into the titanic role.

The six-time Tony winner humanizes this driven, achingly unfulfilled woman without ever softening her abrasive edges, her relentlessly self-serving determination,...

From ‘The Manchurian Candidate’ to ‘The Day of the Jackal’: Why Hollywood Has an Appetite for Assassination Tales
Image
The recent assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan follows two assassination attempts on president elect Donald Trump over the summer.

In the July attempt on Trump’s life in Butler, Penn., the would-be assassin, armed with an Ak-47, was killed by a member of Trump’s security detail. The second attempt on Trump’s life, in Florida, produced another high-powered rifle and a living suspect with a record of strange political and commercial activities, including a stint as a volunteer fighter in the current Ukraine-Russian conflict.

The primary suspect in the Thompson assassination is a young man of great privilege, a tech whiz with a promising future now ended by allegedly brandishing a ghost gun outside a New York hotel and taking Thompson’s life.

Exactly 50 years ago, Hollywood produced “The Parallax View,” a film that spoke to the anxieties of Americans who had just lived through...

The Murder, She Wrote Movie - Confirmation, Cast & Everything We Know
Image
The 1984-1996 crime drama sensation Murder, She Wrote is getting the motion-picture treatment, courtesy of Universal Pictures’ Amy Pascal-produced Murder, She Wrote movie. The original Murder, She Wrote TV show starred Angela Lansbury in an era-defining role as Jessica Fletcher — the sleuthing murder-solving mystery novelist, as she unearthed foul play in the Maine town of Cabot Cove. Murder, She Wrote was a huge success and influenced almost every crime drama that’s followed since, with Lansbury receiving an Emmy nomination for every season.

Despite the lasting legacy of Murder, She Wrote and how much Lansbury’s Jessica Fletcher is entrenched in the history of fictional detectives, there have been few attempts to reinvigorate the title (save for a canceled 2013 reboot). That all changed in 2023 when it was announced that Universal Pictures were forging ahead with the Murder, She Wrote movie. With Little Women and Spider-Man: Homecoming producer Amy Pascal...
