Orca (1977) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Happy 50th anniversary Jaws. You are undoubtedly one of not only the greatest summer blockbusters of all time but a landmark horror film that lives on in both its quotable lines and music that nearly everyone will know when heard but also its legacy. While we have covered the series nearly to death in almost every fashion possible, I don’t think we have looked at what it did for the movie world as much as we could. While there are knockoffs that try to directly capitalize on the very name that built the foundation, looking at you Cruel Jaws/Jaws 5, there are so many wonderful copycats that were produced that live on in their own special ways. My plan is to cover a few of them over the next couple months and while there are many to discuss either on the merits of so bad they are good or genuine uniqueness,...

7 Jaws Knock-Offs and the Revival of the Creature Feature
Image
When Jaws became the biggest movie in the world, there was no doubt that directors and producers would take the wrong lessons. Single-handedly reviving the creature feature in popular culture, Jaws led to a series of particularly violent movies about other animals on a rampage. Below, we’ve highlighted seven of the best Jaws knock-offs and why they’re fun in their own right.

Jaws Knock-Offs to Watch 7. Mako: The Jaws of Death (1976)

Directed by William Grefe

Deciding that sharks were enough to get audiences into the theater, Mako: The Jaws of Death is one of the more blatant Jaws knock-offs in the era. However, it’s a far stranger movie than you might expect. A man not only realizes he has a telephatic connection to sharks, but he grows emotional bonds to them. When others threaten his shark friends, the man uses the sharks to eliminate the threats. Mako...

A 'Tommy Boy' Sequel Pitch Was Rejected by David Spade
Image
Released in 1995, Tommy Boy has gone on to become a comedy movie staple and cult classic. Starring Saturday Night Live castmates and close friends David Spade and Chris Farley, the film played off of their undeniable chemistry and likely wouldn't work if one person were taken out of the equation. This could be why a sequel never came to fruition, given the passing of Farley in 1997 from a drug overdose at the age of 33. Still, that didn't stop Spade from receiving a pitch for a sequel, and he's now revealing his response to a potential Tommy Boy follow-up.

During an appearance on Theo Von's podcast, This Past Weekend, Spade reveals that he was pitched an idea for Tommy Boy 2, and it's something he turned down without hesitation because he can't imagine a sequel without Farley. Not only were Spade and Farley co-stars in the film, they also shared the...

Canceled Marvel Movies We Still Want To See
Image
Marvel, and specifically the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has dominated the zeitgeist for nearly two decades at this point. There's always plenty of talk as to whether general audiences are getting tired of Marvel movies, and while the MCU may not be as infallible as it once was, there's still ample interest. 2024's "Deadpool & Wolverine" crossed the $1 billion mark, and "Daredevil: Born Again" has been largely viewed within a positive light. Sure, every so often you get a "Captain America: Brave New World" that underperforms, but superhero movies will always have a place within the cultural landscape.

Some might argue that there are already too many Marvel movies, but they're could've been plenty more. For every Marvel project that winds up in theaters, there are numerous others where a script was written or even went into pre-production but got cancelled for one reason or another. Honestly, some of these cancelled...

Tommy Boy Director's Favorite Chris Farley Memory Involves A Classic Movie Star Impression And Some Car Chaos [Exclusive]
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the 1995 comedy classic "Tommy Boy," and while a handful of moments in it don't hold up to modern comedy sensibilities, the film is still largely a hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt story about a lovable loser tasked with saving his family's small-town auto parts company. Though Chris Farley had appeared in a handful of movies already, "Tommy Boy" was the first starring role for the "Saturday Night Live" superstar on the big screen, and despite the intense pressure of their schedules, he and fellow "SNL" star David Spade carry the film on their shoulders as their characters trade insults and ultimately go from annoyed acquaintances to genuine friends over the course of the story.

Since "Tommy Boy" was his first big movie, Farley wasn't prepared for the level of mental stamina required to lead a feature film.

‘Orca: The Killer Whale’ 4K Uhd Review
Image
Stars: Richard Harris, Charlotte Rampling, Will Sampson, Bo Derek, Keenan Wynn, Robert Carradine, Scott Walker, Peter Hooten | Written by Luciano Vincenzoni, Sergio Donati | Directed by Michael Anderson

Orca: The Killer Whale, directed by Michael Anderson and released in 1977, is a unique and polarizing entry in the animal horror genre. Riding the wave of killer animal thrillers that followed the massive success of Jaws (1975), Orca seeks to differentiate itself by focusing on one of the ocean’s most intelligent creatures, the killer whale. Despite its potential, the film never quite rises to the heights it aspires to, blending melodrama with ecological themes in ways that often clash.

The story revolves around Captain Nolan (Richard Harris), a fisherman who becomes obsessed with capturing a killer whale for profit. When his attempt to trap a male orca results in the death of its pregnant mate and unborn calf, the whale seeks revenge in...

How Ghosts Can't Do It Earned Donald Trump His First Razzie Award
Image
Donald Trump has enjoyed the perks of fame and money for a long time. Life was especially good for him in the 80s as it was in this particular decade that he made his first appearance on the Forbes list and ventured into many significant businesses. New Yorks Trump Tower synonymous with the former Presidents brand opened in 1983, while his semi-memoir, The Art of the Deal, was published in 1987, becoming one of the best-selling American non-fiction books of all time. The tycoon also purchased or became a major investor in many businesses, including the New Jersey Generals and the Eastern Air Lines Shuttle.

Taking advantage of his growing popularity, Donald Trump fulfilled his dream of starring in movies and TV shows. He made his first on-screen appearance playing himself in a 1985 episode of The Jeffersons titled Youll Never Get Rich, before featuring in the miniseries Ill Take Manhattan. He then...

Every Movie With A Donald Trump Cameo
Image
Children of the 1980s understand how deeply weird it is that Donald Trump is now considered a politician. 40 years ago, Trump was a clownish pop culture figure more than anything. He was often described as a real estate mogul in the press, but he was more often parodied on sitcoms and in comic strips as the world's worst millionaire, a caricature of a pseudo-celebrity, and the central symbol of Ronald Reagan's aggressively wicked yuppie class. He was a whimsical punchline more than he was a respected businessman and his financial failures were just as notorious as his successes. I personally recall a joke from Mad Magazine that said Trump was working on a book about his personal success ... but that he was stuck on Chapter 11.

Trump served as the template for multiple villains in other media, including Gordon Gekko from "Wall Street," C. Montgomery Burns from "The Simpsons," King Koopa in "Super Mario Bros,...

10 Canceled Marvel Movie Characters We Want To See In The MCU After Deadpool & Wolverines Gambit
Image
Following Channing Tatum's appearance as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, it's possible that many other canceled Marvel movie characters could finally make their live-action debuts in the MCU. Channing Tatum first auditioned to play Remy LeBeau's Gambit for 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, but the role was cut, and he was replaced in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Although Tatum's much anticipated solo Gambit movie never came to fruition, Marvel Studios gave him a chance to play the Cajun hero in Deadpool & Wolverine, and other canceled Marvel characters could get the same treatment.

Over the years, many movies based on characters from Marvel Comics have been planned, but not all of them have managed to get out of the planning stages. There have been a huge number of unproduced Marvel movies, some of which would have starred high-profile actors as some iconic heroes and villains. Marvel Studios' exploration of...

Jason Voorhees Was Secretly Laughing During His Arsenio Interview
Image
It’s Friday the 13th, that special time of the year when flights are cheaper (thanks to our collective stupidity) and everybody celebrates the murderous exploits of Jason Voorhees. The iconic slasher first showed up, albeit very briefly, in 1980’s Friday the 13th, before later taking Manhattan, and eventually journeying to outer space, where he went on a Holodeck killing spree.

In addition to the roughly 5,000 Friday the 13th movies, Jason has also occasionally popped up here in the real world — not to disembowel horny camp counselors, but to sell stuff, like the time he visited his local RadioShack.

But no doubt the most famous of Jason’s promotional appearances was the time he guested on The Arsenio Hall Show. Yes, back on July 28, 1989, the late-night host welcomed Bo Derek, Ursula Andress and an axe-wielding undead monster.

Remaining in character for the entire interview, Jason didn’t say a word.

‘American Masters’ celebrates Blake Edwards
Image
There really hasn’t been a filmmaker quite like Blake Edwards. He could go from the silly-billy comedy of his “Pink Panther” comedies starring Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau to “Days of Wine and Roses,” a devastating drama dealing with alcoholism to the gender-bender musical comedy “Victor/Victoria” starring his wife Julie Andrews to the underrated Western “The Wild Rovers” with William Holden and Ryan O’Neal. Edwards even turned the diminutive British comedian Dudley Moore into a leading man thanks to his 1979 romantic comedy “10.” And let’s not forget the extraordinary collaboration he had with composer Henry Mancini who earned four Oscars including best song “Moon River” from 1961’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and the title tune from 1962’s “Days of Wine and Roses.”

Still, there was no love lost between Edwards and Hollywood.

In my 2003 Los Angeles Times interview with Edwards, who had personality to spare, said “I have been a...

‘The Fall Guy’: Five Ways in Which the Movie References the Original Series
Image
(Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Fall Guy movie.)

Yes, The Fall Guy is based on a TV series.

If you weren’t aware of that, it’s likely because you’re of a younger generation that wasn’t alive or old enough to remember the series, which hasn’t exactly re-entered the zeitgeist in the four decades since it went off the air. (An unscientific scan of social media shows more than a few folks who had no idea of the original IP.) But for moviegoers of a certain age, there are references to the series that inspire nostalgia.

The show, which aired from 1981-86, starred Lee Majors as a stuntman who moonlighted as a bounty hunter. The movie stars Ryan Gosling in the lead role, who is also a stuntman. While the movie is not an exact copy of the show, there are several ways in which the film...

When Jason Voorhees and Arsenio Hall Delivered the Best Horror Movie Marketing of All Time [TV Terrors]
Image
For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit one of the most iconic bits of horror movie marketing of all time: when Jason Voorhees took “The Arsenio Hall Show“!

The first time I ever saw the teaser for Jason Takes Manhattan was on the weekend of July 5, 1989. My dad had taken my little brother and I to see Weekend at Bernie’s, and while we were sitting through the trailers, Jason Voorhees suddenly popped up. It was that famed teaser that everyone remembers with Jason looking out onto the cityscape, promising a Friday the 13th sequel wherein Jason would quite literally slice and dice his way through New York City.

Although my parents strictly forbade us from watching Friday the 13th films at the time, I was utterly enamored with Jason Voorhees at just six years old. The teaser didn’t scare me, but it excited me, and ended...

Deadpool Fans Are Convinced One Taylor Swift Lyric Is An Easter Egg Just For Them
Image
Taylor Swift has conquered the world of music, and it's long been rumored that the next step in her career is the movies.

She has her own eponymous production company, for one. In 2020, she starred in the documentary "Miss Americana," and in 2021, she directed a short film adapting her song "All Too Well," starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien. Aside from a handful of supporting roles in several films, she also took the 2023 box office by storm with the "Eras Tour" concert film.

Swift has a passionate fanbase, one that is famous for finding (or creating) supposedly hidden messages across her lyrics. Now, her newly released 11th album, "The Tortured Poets Department," has whipped up a new Swiftie theory.

The last track of "The Tortured Poets Department" — "Clara Bow" — concludes with the line: "The future's bright and dazzling." Fans jumped to the obvious conclusion; of course, Swift is hinting to...

Meghan Markle discusses Netflix short film ‘The After’ with Misan Harriman and David Oyelowo: Watch the full Q&a [Exclusive]
Image
With the shortlist voting period for the 2024 Oscars now open, Netflix has revealed a new video of Meghan Markle moderating a post-screening conversation with filmmaker Misan Harriman and star David Oyelowo for the live-action short film hopeful “The After.” An exclusive premiere of the 30-minute discussion can be found below.

“The After,” which is now streaming on Netflix, is about a London rideshare driver (Oyelowo) who “has to reconnect with himself and society after witnessing a devastating random attack in the capital.”

The short film is Harriman’s directorial debut, following years of success as a photographer, activist, and cultural commentator.

“When Covid hit, my second daughter was born just before lockdown started and the whole process, then George Floyd was killed. And I had this moment of deep retrospection recognizing that I’m not okay,” Harriman told Markle in their conversation, which took place last month at a private residence in Montecito,...

This Isn't the First Time Taylor Swift Has Been Connected to Dazzler
Image
Deadpool 3 is expected to feature various cameos. Taylor Swift is rumored to play the mutant Dazzler in the film, but this isn't the first time she's been connected to the character. With all her recent acting credits, it might be the right time for Taylor Swift to take on the mutant role.

Deadpool 3 is set to have a lot of cameos, many of which will likely be humorous fanservice. Likewise, some of these Easter eggs will exist to allow fans a final goodbye to the Fox X-Men movie universe. The potential is endless for how these cameos might manifest, but one of them might involve a prominent pop star who's ironically been "tied" to the X-Men before.

Taylor Swift is rumored to be playing a version of the mutant Dazzler in the third Deadpool movie. But these same rumors were present around the time that X-Men: Apocalypse was released.

The Whales Are Revolting Against Humanity And A Forgotten Jaws Rip-Off Warned Us
Image
A wannabe "Jaws" rip-off theorized what would happen if a killer whale wreaked revenge on humanity -- "Orca" was a warning. Let's be honest: it's kind of a surprise that it's taken this long for killer whales to revolt against humans. We've poisoned their oceans, killed their young, and forced them into a life of showbiz in cramped theme park pools. Humans had a good run but it seems that orcas are the new mammals in charge.

Sailors working off the coast of Western Europe have reported a series of attacks by a group of orcas they said seemed to be "coordinated." This included striking and sinking a number of boats, although no human casualties have been reported. Some scientists said spikes in aggression may have been started by a female orca nicknamed White Gladis, who is believed to have suffered trauma after a collision with a sailboat.

Pour One Out: Cannes Says “Au Revoir” to a Bartending Legend
Image
For the past 40 Cannes Film Festivals, Alexandre has been putting on a show.

As the head bartender at the Mondrian Cannes — the établissement formerly known as The Grand — he’s been mixing cocktails and charming post-premiere revelers since 1983. Alexandre — it’s always “Alexandre,” no last name, like Prince or Madonna — is, for festival regulars, as familiar and welcome a sight as Cannes’ iconic red carpet. With a tall, lean frame and sharp Gallic nose, he darts between tables like a more elegant version of Monsieur Hulot, instantly recognizable with his striking bald head and those playful eyes that spring open in delight and surprise at every new guest.

Over the years, Alexandre has served festival grandees and Hollywood royalty. Johnny Depp and Jim Jarmusch, Francis Ford Coppola and Robert De Niro. Isabella Rossellini.

He has his stories.

“Sitting right there: Tony Curtis. And there, Bo Derek,” Alexandre begins. “He goes over,...

The Marvel Crossover Movies That Almost Happened
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe really gives us a novelty that took forever for comic book movies to fully embrace. The idea of superhero properties crossing over and building to a much wider world is something that’s in the DNA of the source material. Outside of the Lou Ferrigno Hulk rubbing elbows with half-realized versions of Thor and Daredevil, it’s something that we never truly got to see until Nick Fury stopped by Tony Stark’s house after the Iron Man credits. Before that, the closest thing we had was J. Jonah Jameson referencing the existence of Doctor Strange. Even their rivals at DC Comics couldn’t give us more than a Superman reference in Batman and Robin or a Batman and Robin reference in Steel.

But we did have some close calls over the decades. Some closer than others. Movies and sequels that would have brought together various...

Auberge Resorts’ The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern Debuts in Santa Barbara Wine Country
Image
The Santa Ynez Valley — one of California’s most inviting wine regions — now has something new to offer: its first bona fide luxury resort.

The storied The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern (from $950 per night, more booking options at Expedia.com and Hotels.com) in Los Olivos, California, has been meticulously modernized by design firm AvroKO and has just been opened under the management of luxury hospitality titan Auberge Resorts Collection. The new resort cements Santa Barbara County’s once-under-the-radar wine country destination — where past and current residents include Bernie Taupin, Noah Wylie, Bo Derek and David Crosby — as a vibrant vacation spot.

A former 1800s stagecoach stop between San Francisco and Los Angeles offering food and lodgings for travelers needing a recharge, Mattei’s Tavern reigned as the roaring social hub of the Santa Ynez Valley for over a century. Over the years, the spot had a host of iterations under various owners,...

Sidney Poitier Set to Receive Icon Tribute at 2022 Gotham Awards – Film News in Brief
Image
The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced that late filmmaker, activist and Academy Award-winning actor Sidney Poitier will receive the Icon Tribute posthumously during the 32nd annual Gotham Awards ceremony on Monday, November 28 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

The announcement of this year’s Icon Tribute follows the release of critically-acclaimed documentary film “Sidney,” which had its world premiere during a gala presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released on Apple TV+ in September. The documentary has since won best biographical documentary at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards.

The Gotham Awards Advisory Committee started the Gotham Icon Tribute in 2021, seeking to call attention to the boldness, artistry and impact of a filmmaker from a historically-excluded community whose work has not been previously recognized by the organization. Playwright and filmmaker Kathleen Collins was honored the tribute last year.

There's One Marvel Superhero Almost Famous Director Cameron Crowe Would Be Happy To Adapt
Image
We have movies for most of the Marvel Comics characters, don't we? Oh ... wait, no. No, it appears that we don't. There is one major character missing from the MCU, and she's pretty fabulous. People have been fan-casting this role for years, and if a movie about them ever happened, it could be really visually interesting. This is especially true if a certain director helmed a film about her.

In a recent interview with director Cameron Crowe, Rolling Stone proposed something that would be right up his alley in terms of his body of work, and now that it's been talked about, it is absolutely something that has to happen.

As you know, Crowe is the director of "Almost Famous," which is about the music industry. Is it becoming clearer? Do you have a guess? She's sparkly...

It's Dazzler! Crowe might have been (and probably was) joking here, and I...

Jerry Maguire Director Wants To Make X-Men Movie About Obscure Mutant
Image
Jerry Maquire director Cameron Crowe wants to direct a Marvel movie based on the X-Men character Dazzler. Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the X-Men film franchise at 20th Century Fox built its own shared universe of characters that helped pave the way for other superhero films. Before Disney bought the rights to the X-Men, Dazzler appeared in a cameo in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Starting with Phase 4, the MCU has started to tease the arrival of Mutants with characters such as Ms. Marvel, Professor X, and Namor. Characters who are often associated with being Mutants like El Águila and Mr. Immortal also made appearances on the TV series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, where the X-Men themselves were also name-dropped by the titular hero. In connection to the original X-Men film series, Deadpool 3, is set to have Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman returning the reprise their roles...

Designer Jenni Kayne Lists Santa Ynez Ranch for 6M (Exclusive)
Image
Click here to read the full article.

As a kid, fashion and home designer Jenni Kayne used to visit the Santa Ynez Valley with her family. “I have such amazing memories of summers and long weekends there,” says Kayne regarding the wine-growing region northwest of the city of Santa Barbara.

In September of 2020, Kayne purchased a 3,860-square-foot home in the valley — where celebrity residents have included Noah Wylie, Bo Derek, tennis great Jimmy Connors and lyricist Bernie Taupin — but the four-bedroom house was not exactly move-in ready.

“I spent time looking for the right property in Santa Ynez, and came across this home that had been abandoned since the 1970s. It was near disrepair, with caution tape across the sinks and toilets and animals living inside,” says Kayne, who nevertheless could see the potential of the space as a showcase for her Jenni Kayne Home collection and as a place...

‘The Ghost of Richard Harris’ Review: Larger-Than-Life Actor Remembered Ruefully and Gratefully
Richard Harris
The word “legendary” gets tossed around pretty easily when discussing important actors, but there’s a huge difference between starring in a lot of important movies, and starring in a lot of movies while leaving everyone you ever met with an epic, semi-fantastical tale about how incredibly drunk you got.

Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, Adrian Sibley’s documentary “The Ghost of Richard Harris” tells the story of — you guessed it — Richard Harris, but also his ghost. The Irish actor, musician and poet who starred in films like “This Sporting Life,” “The Field,” “Gladiator” and two “Harry Potter” entries led an extraordinary existence that’s well worth recording for posterity. And in his wake, he left behind three sons who barely knew their real father, and who seek in his absence a little bit of understanding and maybe some closure.

“The Ghost of Richard Harris” follows actors Jared Harris...

‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ Review: Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell Have an Affair to Remember
Image
These days, with rappers singing about “wet-ass pussy” and Ana de Armas simulating a presidential blow job in “Blonde,” it’s hard to imagine a world in which a couple four-letter words are enough to get a book banned. In the case of D.H. Lawrence’s notorious 1928 novel “Lady Chatterley’s Lover,” it was more than just the sex talk that riled the censors (the 1955 French film version was banned because it “promoted adultery”), although the book certainly seems tame by the standards of “Fifty Shades of Grey” and whatever gynecological surprises an un-Safe Google search might turn up.

How then to approach Lawrence’s controversial classic today, when audiences have seemingly seen it all, but still find themselves surfing for titillation on Netflix (judging by the streamer’s T&a-skewing Top 10 lists)? In an admirable bid to make “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” at once respectable and arousing, French director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre...

“Taking the risks to do things your way can be scary. You gotta be brave.”

So says Shania Twain in a voiceover to open the trailer for her new Netflix documentary Not Just a Girl as a yellow convertible cruises down a road against the backdrop of snow-dusted mountains, presumably in Switzerland where the music superstar has lived for years. The career-spanning doc hits the streamer July 26 and features the Grammy winner opening up about her life and career.

“She was the first person to break that door open and go across the music genres,” says Lionel Richie in the doc. “She was that trailblazer.” In addition to interviews with Twain and Richie, the trailer features such faces as Diplo, Orville Peck, Kelsey Ballerini, Bo Derek and more. In one flash of a scene, Twain is seen speaking to Taylor Swift on FaceTime.

On the Scene as Julie Andrews and ‘The Sound of Music’ Share the Honor of AFI Life Achievement Award
Image
“Welcome to the 48th, 49th, and 50th AFI Life Achievement Award” joked Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO, who kicked off the last night’s event in honor of Julie Andrews by first giving the other award of the night, the 2022 Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal, to “Coda” director and AFI alum Sian Heder.

It was a direct address of how the event, which had to take two years off due to the pandemic that is still affecting everyone’s schedules, travels, etc., was now back as a somewhat more humble affair. After a three-course meal, the audience was treated to a bit of theater, with the first presenters being the child stars from “The Sound of Music,” Angela Cartwright, Duane Chase, Nicholas Hammond, Kym Karath and Debbie Turner, all grown up and leading a sing-a-long of “Do-Re-Mi.”

Next was the first of what would be multiple video segments played between each presenter,...

Carol Burnett, Steve Carell Toast Julie Andrews at AFI Life Achievement Gala: “A Great Dame In Every Sense of the Word”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

After a two-year pandemic delay, Julie Andrews was finally honored with AFI’s Life Achievement Award on Thursday, in a star-studded celebration that included Carol Burnett, Steve Carell, Gwen Stefani and Cynthia Erivo.

The 86-year-old star of The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and The Princess Diaries made a rare public appearance at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood to receive the honor, telling The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the event, “I’m still taking the wonder of it in because it’s such a huge evening.”

And living up to that, the evening kicked off with a spectacle, as a woman in costume as Mary Poppins descended from the ceiling and flew around the theater, followed by an onstage Sound of Music cast reunion with the film’s child stars, including Angela Cartwright, Debbie Turner, Duane Chase, Kym Karath and Nicholas Hammond, now all grown up.
