We are back today with another exciting movie recommendation from auteur creator Guillermo del Toro. Today’s pick is a classic actioner that del Toro previously praised via Twitter (it will absolutely never be X to me). The Crimson Peak director has nothing but love for this one. You can scope a quote from the post in question directly below.
While del Toro is surely an enthusiastic fan of the film, he’s far from the only one. The Train has a stellar Rotten Tomatoes critical approval rating of 94% with 18 reviews tallied. Additionally, the flick sits at a very respectable 89% audience approval score on the site.
Critics praised the film for delivering astute commentary on the evils of war and for serving up breakneck action sequences from start to finish.

Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor is said to be a faint inspiration for Sanjay Bhansali’s forthcoming Love & War. The war epic, released on May 25, 2001, recreated the attack on Pearl Harbor in a pulp format.
In a key sequence of Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt tells his cabinet that America must attack Japan in retaliation for the attack on Pearl Harbor. Everyone looks askance. So what does the President do? He throws a metaphysical tantrum. He raises himself out of his wheelchair and bellows, “Don’t tell me it can’t be done.”
Well, it can, actually. The Pearl Harbor incident is something that America and Hollywood just can’t get out of their system. There have been other films on the subject, like Richard Fleischer’s Tora Tora Tora, but none so flashily comic book. Pearl Harbor can comfortably be divided into three parts—the romantic triangle, the attack on Pearl Harbor,...

The Butterfly Effect is a concept that describes how small actions can have big consequences in the distant future. Well, if you believe in fan theories, it seems that’s what happened with Denzel Washington back in 1993, leading to a devastating snub. That year, Al Pacino won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role in Scent of a Woman, and Washington was also on the nomination list.
However, iconic director Spike Lee revealed all these years later that the Oscar should have rightfully gone to Denzel Washington instead of Pacino back in 1993!
The Oscar that could have gone to Denzel Washington
Denzel Washington found worldwide fame and critical acclaim for his role as Malcolm Little in the 1992 film Malcolm X. With a controversial storyline and Spike Lee helming the director’s seat, the film did find unprecedented fame, and Washington received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

The first season of House of David has been a big hit on Prime Video. It’s a mix of both Biblical tales and historical facts, examining the rise of young David from the boy who takes down Goliath to the future king of Isreal in 1000 BC.
The series has become a major draw with good critical acclaim. It mixes powerful drama and action with strong Christian themes while also appealing to mainstream audiences. This is part of a new trend in TV to showcase religious-themed works. So if you enjoy House of David, here are similar shows to check out on streaming!

In this business, legends don’t come much bigger than the great Nicolas Cage. Recently, I had the chance to see his latest movie, The Surfer, at a pretty raucous screening at SXSW. You can read my review Here, but I enjoyed this surreal tribute to seventies Ozzploitation flicks. In it, Cage plays a harried businessman trying to reconnect with his Australian roots, only to run afoul of a local surf gang, run by a magnetic, macho guru (Nip/Tuck’s Julian McMahon in an excellent performance), who launches a campaign against him that challenges his sanity.
Suffice to say, I was pumped when I received an invitation to speak to Cage recently. I’ve interviewed Cage a few times before, and always found him to be an upbeat, friendly guy – and this time was no exception. You can really see in our chat (embedded above) that Cage cares about the film,...

At the outset of the 1970s, John Wayne, arguably the biggest movie star of the 20th century, was making reasonably profitable movies at an impressively decent clip for a man who'd lost a lung to cancer. Though he looked considerably older than he was, he felt obliged to keep making films espousing conservative values for his aging fans and, whether they liked it or not, those goddamn pot-smoking, war-protesting, bra-burning Baby Boomers.
More often than not, Wayne's 1970s movies felt old-fashioned, but the actor, now in his 60s, was willing to tweak his image in order to keep up with moviegoers' changing tastes. After Wayne turned down the lead role in Don Siegel's "Dirty Harry" (a decision he regretted), he starred in the gritty-for-him cop drama "McQ." Netflix‘s April film acquisitions include masterpieces from some of the most revered Hollywood directors of the past 50 years, including Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann. Whether you are in the mood for Nolan’s best superhero film or Mann’s greatest crime thriller, Netflix has whatever its subscribers may be looking for in April. That is to say nothing, either, of the pair of timeless sports dramas that the streaming service also added to its platform this month.
Here are TheWrap’s picks for the seven best movies that have started streaming on Netflix in April.
“The Dark Knight” (Warner Bros. Pictures) “The Dark Knight” (2008)
Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” is still considered by many to be the peak of the superhero genre, and for good reason. Nolan’s 2008 sequel to 2005’s “Batman Begins” is a propulsive, gripping crime thriller that doubles as a battle of wills...

VistaVision is back. Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” not only earned Lol Crawley the Best Cinematography Oscar but has sparked a renewed interest in the format — one that is now being further fanned by unconfirmed reports of the 35mm horizontal format also being used in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” Alejandro González Iñárritu’s untitled 2026 film, and Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights.”
The timing is perfect, therefore, for the TCM Classic Film Festival to screen two rare Paramount VistaVision prints of “We’re No Angels” (1955) and “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” (1957) on April 26 at the Tcl Chinese Theater. What’s more, the movies will be projected with special horizontal projectors, which haven’t been used since the 1950s.
Crawley will introduce “Gunfight,” the Western from director John Sturges (“The Magnificent Seven”), which teams Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday, and Charlotte Barker,...

Many years ago, onlookers watched with bated breath as Wyatt Earp marched out to confront ... Wyatt Earp. It was the mid-'90s, and two rival films about the legendary Wild West lawman were vying for the cinemagoer's buck: First up, on Christmas Day 1993, was George P. Cosmatos's "Tombstone," followed six months later by Lawrence Kasdan's "Wyatt Earp." Twin movies were a regular phenomenon in the '90s: You had "Deep Impact" versus "Armageddon," "Dante's Peak" versus "Volcano," and even "Antz" versus "A Bug's Life." But the dueling Westerns had a lot more at stake, because there was a significant beef between the two productions.
Kevin Costner was set to star in "Tombstone" before falling out with screenwriter Kevin Jarre, moving on to develop his own epic biopic of the frontier marshal with Lawrence Kasdan. Rather than let things lie, however, rumors circulated that Costner had tried using his...

Sometimes it takes ages for an actor to finally get their due -- they spend years grinding until they're considered to have waited long enough to earn themselves an Oscar (often for a bewilderingly subpar film that's far from their best work). But every once in a while, they end up knocking it out of the park and bowling over the Academy so thoroughly that they win an Oscar for their first feature film.
You see it more often with women, for whom writing -- until relatively recently -- tended to be stronger in younger roles and in supporting performances, but these first-time Oscars crop up for all different types of characters. And unfortunately, winning an Oscar for your first movie can be as much of a curse as it is a blessing -- after all, how can you possibly top that? Here are each and every actor who earned...

Italian composer Paolo Buonvino delved deep into the musical heritage of his native Sicily to create the score for Netflix’s sumptuous “The Leopard” series, which has been steadily gaining global fans since dropping in March.
The high-end period piece, which marks the streamer’s biggest splash in Italy so far, is a modern take on the classic Sicily-set novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. Set against the backdrop of social revolution in 1860s Sicily, it was famously adapted into a film by Luchino Visconti starring Claudia Cardinale, Alain Delon and Burt Lancaster. The film, now an Italian cinema classic, won the 1963 Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival.
The series is lead-directed by Britain’s Tom Shankland and stars top model Deva Cassel — who is Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel’s daughter — as Angelica Sedara, the stunning middle-class woman who becomes a catalyst of social disruption and was played by Cardinale in the original.

Countless celebrities have lent their vocal talents to The Simpsons over the past 36 years, including several legit old Hollywood icons such as Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Lemmon and an 89-year-old Bob Hope, whose dialogue was recorded at his Silver Lake home with the help of a young Conan O’Brien.
But perhaps the most prominent Simpsons role to be played by a classic film star was Chester J. Lampwick, the impoverished creator of The Itchy & Scratchy Show’s Itchy, who was voiced by three-time Oscar nominee Kirk Douglas. And really, no scene in Spartacus comes close to the passionate rebellion Douglas showcases as Lampwick while refusing to paint Grampa Simpson’s chicken coop because the corn muffins he was compensated with were “lousy.”
But the late Douglas wasn’t always the easiest person to work with. He was labelled “difficult” by frequent co-star Burt Lancaster, and fought so bitterly with director Stanley Kubrick...

In John Cheever’s expert short story “The Swimmer,” the protagonist announces his intention to swim from a small afternoon gathering to his home, exclusively using an interconnected series of suburban Westchester County swimming pools. What initially presents as a lark, as he eagerly accepts drinks and warm greetings from his friends and neighbors, becomes an ever-darkening 12-page realization on the part of the audience and hero alike that Neddy Merrill’s life has collapsed in ultimately unspecified ways. He has fallen into debt and become estranged from the people he loved. The home to which he has been journeying, in very mythologically tinged fashion, is now empty and uninhabited.

It has been 12 years since Pacific Rim hit theatres, and even though the possibility of a threequel from Guillermo del Toro remains unlikely, this hasn’t stopped fans from reliving the iconic monster/robot spectacle. But amidst its brilliant cast, it’s Ron Perlman, who ends up stealing every scene he is in as Hannibal Chau.

Netflix has had delectable historical fiction dramas from the Western part of the world. Exclusive: Filmmaker Joshua Coates has secured rights to the life story of Abraham Bolden, the subject of the 2008 autobiography The Echo of Dealey Plaza. Bolden made history as the first Black U.S. Secret Service agent assigned to the White House detail, where he guarded President John F. Kennedy who had personally appointed him in 1961.
Coates has written the screenplay for the movie The Unseen Shield and will also direct the film, which is currently in pre-production with his producing partner Fetteroff Colen.
Bolden, a U.S. Secret Service agent stationed in the Chicago office, first met Kennedy while on assignment in that city. Bolden had played a key role in thwarting an assassination plot in Chicago months before JFK was tragically assassinated in Dallas. Thanks to Bolden’s investigation, Kennedy canceled a planned trip to Chicago, where he was set to address supporters of his 1960 election campaign.

Nicolas Cage is one of those actors where you know that even if the movie he’s in isn’t good, it at least won’t be boring. His latest film, The Surfer, had the potential to be something really special — a throwback to an oft-forgotten wing of exploitation cinema. While there are enough intriguing elements to make this worth a watch, The Surfer is a very frustrating experience (albeit purposefully so).
The Surfer Review
The Surfer follows a man who returns to his hometown hoping to surf with his son, only to find himself at war with a local gang of surfers who try to torment him to his breaking point. Inspired by the John Cheever short story The Swimmer (and its Burt Lancaster adaptation), the movie becomes a surreal psychological thriller that feels almost like a drug-free trip.

Netflix’s “The Leopard” is gaining global traction with viewers just as the streaming giant is taking the sumptuous Sicilian series on a tour involving gala presentations in Italian embassies and other institutions in Washington D.C., London, Berlin, Brussels and other world capitals.
The high-end show, based on the classic Sicily-set novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, dropped on Netflix March 5. “Everything must change for everything to remain the same,” Tancredi, Prince Fabrizio Salina’s beloved nephew, says in a now-famous line from Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s novel “The Leopard.” The same philosophy applies to the look and feel of the Sicily-set classic’s Netflix miniseries adaptation, which released globally Wednesday and marks the streamer’s most ambitious Italian original to date.
“The Leopard” chronicles the changes in Sicilian life and society during the 19th-century unification of Italy, known as the Risorgimento. When tasked with telling the story in 2025, the lavish show’s production and costume teams faced a monumental challenge in envisioning a modern take on the sensual Sicilian saga. There would also be inevitable comparisons to “The Leopard’s” first adaptation — Luchino Visconti’s 1963 cinema classic starring Claudia Cardinale, Alain Delon and Burt Lancaster, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival.

World War II movies have been a prominent fixture in Hollywood since the war began. Even as soldiers were charging onto the battlefield to face off against Imperial Japanese soldiers and the Nazis, the industry was producing more theatrical releases. Movies like The Great Dictator (1940), Minesweeper (1943), and Hitler – Beast of Berlin (1939) forced audiences to reckon with the reality of war. Even when World War II ended violently, Hollywood never lost its fascination with the era. It continued to produce more releases with every passing year.
Throughout the 20th century, World War II movies were an essential staple. Every decade had a massive World War II movie released, culminating in Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Schindler's List (1993). Before color films conquered the big screen, however, black-and-white epics...

Long after 1957's Gunfight at the O.K. With an all-star 1990s cast, the film has since gone on to be considered a hallmark of the Western genre. And its hold on audiences remains strong to this day. Netflix pulled out all the stops as it unveiled its hotly anticipated limited series “The Leopard,” based on the classic Sicily-set novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, which marks the streamer’s biggest splash in Italy thus far.
On Tuesday, Netflix held a packed press conference in the frescoed ballroom of Rome’s central Hotel Plaza, which was also used to film one of the show’s key scenes. “The Leopard” will formally premiere in Rome on March 3 with a black-tie gala held in the Eternal City’s Opera Theatre before dropping globally on March 5.

Perhaps more than any other genre, the Western demands a specific, rugged essence from its actors to be believable. For example, character actors such as Ben Johnson, Jack Elam, Chill Willis, and John Ireland possessed a certain aesthetic that allowed them to become part of the iconography of the genre as a whole. However, some Western stars can manage the aesthetics of the genre without the acting chops of character actors.
Cinema's greatest Western stars embody toughness, grit, and self-reliance. They also are able to transcend time, shedding their modern sensibilities and encompassing the spirit of the Old West. Actors such as Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, and James Stewart rank among the best Western stars of all time.

Burt Lancaster was a breathtakingly beautiful man with the build of an athlete and, as an actor, a nose for top-notch material that he could perfectly serve if not elevate (he has nine perfect movies according to Rotten Tomatoes). He was one of the most beloved movie stars of his generation, and he was deeply mourned when he passed away in 1994. though his death wasn't sudden. He hadn't appeared in a film since 1989's "Field of Dreams," which wound up being a lovely little swan song for the kid from East Harlem. It's just that he was Burt Lancaster, and we couldn't imagine a world without a dashingly determined person like him in it.
Lancaster's "Field of Dreams" co-star Kevin Costner was quite taken with the leading man when they shot their two scenes together. How could he not be? He'd grown up watching the man swashbuckle and soldier and seduce.

Throughout the 1970s, audiences couldn’t get enough of disaster movies. The decade began with the all-star blockbuster bomb-on-a-plane thrill ride Airport, based on Arthur Hailey’s best-seller. Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Maureen Stapleton, Van Heflin, Jean Seberg, and Jacqueline Bisset headlined Airport, which became the second-biggest box-office hit of the year and earned nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and winning Best Supporting Actress for Hayes. Airport also established the template for subsequent movies: trapping all-star casts on a plane, a ship, or a high-rise.

When Kirk Douglas died in 2020 at the age of 103 (!), he left behind a massive legacy of over 90 films that even the most stalwart cineastes haven't been able to work their way through. Known for his affable smile and intense performances, Douglas is one of Hollywood's most famous leading men, and was the industry's most profitable actor throughout the 1950s. He was also a producing powerhouse, having started his own production company, Bryna Productions, which handled some of his best-known films. Bryna backed the Stanley Kubrick movies "Paths of Glory" and "Spartacus," as well as "The Vikings," "Seconds," "Seven Days in May," and, later on, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Douglas never lost sight of the evolving nature of film, rarely resting on trends or genres.

Burt Lancaster could be just about anything you needed him to be — except small. He was not towering at 6'1", but he sure made it look that way on screen. Whether smiling or glowering, good natured or pure evil, there was a formidable bearing to Lancaster. But he did not lumber. God no, he was as graceful as a circus acrobat because, well, he was one. How dare a man so sturdy be so damn limber. And golden. And beautiful.
Lancaster's acting career was as remarkable as his absurdly perfect physicality. He made his motion picture debut in a stone-cold classic, and was one of the most popular movie stars on the planet for well over a decade. Lancaster worked too frequently to not slip up on occasion, but he generally exhibited great taste, particularly as a producer. You don't often see the great movies coming. Sure, some classics swagger their way into theaters (like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" did in 2023), but take a look at the vast majority of the movies on your favorites queue and you'll see titles that arrived with very little fanfare. Warner Bros. didn't expect "L.A. Confidential" to take off like it did, and Columbia Pictures was absolutely stunned when "The Shawshank Redemption" rebounded after a disappointing theatrical release to become one of the most beloved motion pictures in the history of the medium.
Then there's Universal and "Field of Dreams." Kevin Costner was a movie star in 1989 on the strength of "The Untouchables," "No Way Out" and "Bull Durham," but two of those three hits were adult-skewing entertainments that traded heavily on his sex appeal. "Field of Dreams" was ... really, what in...

"Uncle, if we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change." Netflix has revealed the teaser trailer for The Leopard series, their new adaptation of this classic Italian novel. "A great story is timeless." The Leopard, also known as Il Gattopardo, written by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, was adapted once before into the acclaimed 1963 film also titled The Leopard starring Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale. The Prince of Salina, a noble aristocrat of impeccable integrity, tries to preserve his family and class amid the tumultuous social upheavals of 1860s Sicily. The series will be a modern exploration of timeless themes – power, love, and the cost of progress. The teaser features Kim Rossi Stuart as the Prince of Salina, who is starring along with Benedetta Porcaroli, Deva Cassel, and Saul Nanni alongside Paolo Calabresi, Francesco Colella, Astrid Meloni, and Greta Esposito. It starkly contrasts the order and...

Police brutality has always been a hot-button issue, one where tragedy is never far behind. While this topic has taken on even more prominence in society over the past few years, it's something that people have been debating for decades, even as far back as 1971, when Don Siegel directed Clint Eastwood in a little movie called Dirty Harry.
Featuring one of the most controversial antiheroes in cinematic history, Dirty Harry stars Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan, a police officer with morals just crooked enough to get the job done no matter what. In the original movie, his job entailed hunting down the murderous Scorpio Killer. In order to capture that maniac, Harry had to resort to tactics nearly as violent and malignant as the man he was looking to stop. What has become the archetypal trope known as the "hard-boiled cop who plays by his own rules" has always been...

Hollywood has seen a variety of acting legends come and go, from classic stars like Cary Grant and John Wayne to modern icons like Gary Oldman and Tom Hanks. As stars age up, some become stalwarts of modern cinema, playing the roles of wise mentors to younger actors, while others see their star fade and transition to lower-budget films. As a result, some actors finish their careers in relative obscurity to younger audiences, while others are lucky enough to go out with a bang.
Some actors and directors are so conscious of their career record that they become incredibly selective when it comes to movies they work on, trying to preserve a near-flawless record. That said, stars can never be certain of how their final movie will turn out, whether an issue of the final production or simply being a miss with audiences. From animated movies to critically acclaimed hits,...

When Quentin Tarantino calls a film one of the greatest of its genre, you pay attention. Ulzana's Raid, the 1972 Western and the third of four films that director Robert Aldrich and movie star Burt Lancaster made together, impressed Tarantino so much that it earned that it earned his praise. "Ulzana's Raid is hands down Aldrichs best film of the seventies, as well as being one of the greatest westerns of the seventies." Tarantino stated, adding "One of the things that makes the movie so remarkable is it isnt just a western; it combines the two genres that Aldrich was most known for, westerns and war films."...

As you’ve probably heard by now, Donald Trump has been spending the final weeks of his campaign cosplaying as people who actually work for a living. First it was a visit to McDonald’s, and then yesterday, he decided to put on a reflective vest and ride around in the passenger’s seat of a garbage truck as it slowly circled an airport tarmac next to Trump’s private plane. You know, typical garbage collector stuff.
He followed it up by appearing at a rally while still wearing the vest. Why? Because a staff member told him it made him “look thinner.”
The ridiculous stunt was Trump’s way of trolling Joe Biden for referring to his followers as “garbage,” in response to Tony Hinchcliffe’s recent Trump rally stand-up set. If it seemed so goofy that it could have been the plot of a sitcom, that’s possibly because...

Burt Lancaster was an Oscar-winning actor who appeared in dozens of movies until his death in 1994. But which titles are among his finest? Let’s take a look back at 20 of Lancaster’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1913, Lancaster got into acting after performing as an acrobat in the circus. He made his movie debut in 1946 with a leading role in the quintessential noir thriller “The Killers” (1946). He earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for Fred Zinnemann‘s wartime drama “From Here to Eternity” (1953), winning the prize just seven years later for playing a fast-talking preacher in “Elmer Gantry” (1960). Lancaster would compete twice more in the category (“Birdman of Alcatraz” in 1962 and “Atlantic City” in 1981).
In the 1950s, the actor decided to chart his own career by forming the production company Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, which churned out a number of successful titles including the Best Picture-winning “Marty...
