Jonathan Kaplan, Director of ‘The Accused’ and ‘ER,’ Dies at 77
Image
Jonathan Kaplan, who directed Jodie Foster to a best actress Oscar in The Accused and received five Emmy nominations for his work as a helmer and producer on ER, has died. He was 77.

Kaplan died Friday at his home in Los Angeles after a battle with liver cancer, his daughter, Molly Kaplan, told The Hollywood Reporter. “He was a loving, supportive father,” she said.

Kaplan, whose parents both worked in show business and whose uncle was Oscar-winning actor Van Heflin, served an apprenticeship with famed B-movie producer Roger Corman and then directed the blaxploitation classic Truck Turner (1974), starring Isaac Hayes, Yaphet Kotto and Nichelle Nichols.

Kaplan also guided Michelle Pfeiffer to a best actress Oscar nomination in the 1960s-set Love Field (1992), and his directing résumé included the Shirley Muldowney biopic Heart Like a Wheel (1983), starring Bonnie Bedelia and Beau Bridges; Bad Girls (1987), the distaff Western starring Madeleine Stowe, Mary Stuart Masterson,...

Jennie Snyder Urman is reuniting with another of her Jane the Virgin alumni in the law offices of Jacobson Moore. According to Deadline, Justina Machado is coming aboard in Season 2 of the creator's smash-hit legal drama series Matlock at CBS. Technically it’s 21, because the Smothers Brothers did it twice. Sue us.

Tommy and Dick Smothers graced Studio 8H twice, in 1982 and 1983.

‘Matlock’ Boss Teases New Character Joining Season 2 With Ties to Beau Bridges’ Senior
Image
There’s a new face coming to Matlock Season 2, and we’re not talking about the man claiming to be Alfie’s (Aaron D. Harris) dad. But showrunner Jennie Snyder-Urman says there are several new characters to be debuted in Matlock Season 2. She shared specific details about one of them with TV Insider. Snyder Urman tells us that Julian’s (Jason Ritter) former stepmother will be making her debut in Season 2, and she wasn’t his first stepmother. “There are a lot of interesting new characters coming. You’ll meet Senior’s [Beau Bridges] third ex-wife who he married because she was smart,” Snyder Urman says. “That’s a mistake he vows he will never make again. You’ll meet her,...

"I Was Worried About That": Matlock Villain Actor Candidly Talks About The Backlash From Its Finale Twist
Image
Warning! Includes spoilers for the Matlock season 1 finale!!

Matlock may have wrapped its first season, but the finale twist was quite a shock to many, including the show's villain, Jason Ritter (Julian Markston). The finale delivered a bold narrative risk that left many viewers divided, especially since it seems like Markston's the one who's been hiding the Wellbrexa documents. Now that it's known that Markston is a true villain, this cliffhanger has left fans on the edge of their seats.

During an interview with Variety, Ritter, along with his TV dad, Howard "Senior" Markston (Beau Bridges), sat with the publication to talk about the finale and the ongoing mystery of who had these files. For Ritter, stepping into such a polarizing role came with real concern about fan reactions and how they would respond to such a dramatic shift in tone and motive.

Beau Bridges and Jason Ritter on Their Complex ‘Matlock’ Relationship, Career Parallels and Following in Their Fathers’ Footsteps
Image
Casting Beau Bridges and Jason Ritter as father-and-son attorneys on “Matlock” was a stroke of genius — and perhaps an inevitability. Both were born into performing families; Bridges is the son of Lloyd and brother to Jeff Bridges. Ritter is the grandson of Tex Ritter and son of the late John Ritter, who, ironically, was often mistaken for Beau Bridges during his early career, even to the point where people asked him to sign the wrong headshot.

The two actors have even shared a role: Ritter participated in a 2007 reading of the play “The Trial of the Catonsville Nine,” taking on the part that Beau had originated in 1971. While Bridges had a different part at the reading, it was there that the two actors first met in person.

Now, the legacy actors are sharing scenes in the CBS hit, created by Jennie Snyder Urman and starring Kathy Bates as the eponymous attorney,...

Guest acting Emmy odds: See how Kaitlyn Dever, Jeffrey Wright, Martin Scorsese, Bryan Cranston, and other hopefuls stack up
Image
Last week, the four guest acting categories were added to Gold Derby's Emmy predictions center, and we now have a snapshot of the initial odds.

For Best Drama Guest Actress, The Last of Us holds the top two spots with Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, a vengeful soldier in the zombie apocalypse, and Catherine O'Hara as Gail, a therapist who has a run-in with Pedro Pascal's Joel. Dever has yet to win an Emmy Award, while O'Hara is a two-time champion for starring on Schitt's Creek (2020) and for writing Sctv Network (1982).

For Best Drama Guest Actor, Jeffrey Wright is in the lead for playing Isaac on The Last of Us, the former Fedra soldier in post-apocalypse Seattle who switches sides in explosive fashion. FBI: Most Wanted star being eyed for role in Matlock season 2
Image
Fans of Kathy Bates’s Matlock series, as well as FBI: Most Wanted, may get to see a familiar face crop up on the series. FBI: Most Wanted recently finished its run on CBS, leaving the actors involved open for other projects.

One of these actors is Edwin Hodge, who played Special Agent Ray Cannon from season 4 until the show’s finale in season 6. Before the series ended, he told a fellow agent, Nina Chase (Shantel VanSanten), that he and his wife were expecting a baby together. This was a nice way to cap off Hodge’s time with the series, and another series is already looking to sweep him up.

In response to a question from TVLine, showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman discussed wanting to cast two guest stars who are familiar to two of the stars of the series, Jason Ritter and Skye P. Marshall.

‘Matlock’ acting Emmy submissions include Kathy Bates and Skye P. Marshall, plus these 3 guest stars
Image
CBS will submit nine cast members from Matlock Season 1 for Emmy consideration, Gold Derby has learned.

Kathy Bates is entering the Best Drama Actress category for playing Madeline Kingston, a wealthy woman who's masquerading as a kind-hearted lawyer named Madeline "Matty" Matlock. Madeline uses her manipulation skills (and an assist from Werther's Originals) to try to uncover which partner at Jacobson Moore covered up evidence that could have prevented the opioid epidemic that led to her daughter's death. Bates, an Oscar winner for Misery (1990), has already won two Emmys in her career, for Two and a Half Men and American Horror Story: Coven, but this would be her first lead Emmy victory.

Five performers are campaigning in the two featured categories: Sam Anderson as Edwin Kingston, David Del Rio as Billy Martinez, and Jason Ritter as Julian Markston in Best Drama Supporting Actor; and Leah Lewis as Sarah Yang and...

‘Matlock’ Star Says the Cases of the Week Will “Mirror” Season 2’s New Story
Image
CBS's modern take on Matlock was the breakout hit of the season for the network, thanks in part to casting Kathy Bates in a role that's much deeper than just a gender swap of Andy Griffith's classic attorney. Matty Matlock, aka Madeline Kingston, spends Season 1 seeking truth and justice for her daughter, who died as a result of the opioid epidemic. Viewers follow her as she makes friends and seeks clues among those in the law firm Jacobson Moore in hopes of finding who hid the critical evidence against the pharmaceutical company Wellbrexa that could've saved her daughter's life. Between this, however, is a case-of-the-week formula for Matty and the team that hearkens back to the show's predecessor. According to Skye P. Marshall, that element isn't going anywhere either as the show changes focus in Season 2.

Speaking to TV Insider alongside her co-star Jason Ritter, Marshall opened up...

Clint Eastwood And Steven Spielberg Once Teamed Up For A Classic, Influential TV Show
Image
Steven Spielberg is often regarded for his invaluable contributions to cinema, but there's an argument to be made for his place in television. After his short film "Amblin'" made waves with Sid Sheinberg, the former head of Universal, Spielberg spent the late '60s and early '70s directing a number of shows including "Columbo" and "Night Gallery." Though his focus would cater toward the glamour of big screen adventures, he never lost sight of the medium that gave him the opportunities to flex his chops. Most of Spielberg's later television career consisted of executive producer credits, but there were some shows that he had an active hand in developing, with one that made a considerable splash in the mid '80s.

"Amazing Stories" was Spielberg's foray into the world of anthology television, as each episode spanned the genre-scope of fantasy, science fiction and horror. Invoking the series will undoubtedly...

Pedro Pascal, Allison Janney, Steve Carell, Kaitlyn Dever, and the great Emmy category mystery
Image
Studios and campaigners have until May 8 to finalize their 2025 Emmys submissions, and this year in particular, there seems to be more behind-the-scenes strategizing (and last-minute second-guessing) than ever before. After all, deciding whether a performer contends in lead vs. supporting vs. guest can mean the difference between winning a trophy — and being snubbed completely.

Two of the most talked-about Emmy category mysteries that still remain involve Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) and Allison Janney (The Diplomat).

Warning: this article contains massive spoilers for both of their shows, so read at your own risk!

Caution: This article contains Spoilers for the Matlock season 1 finale

All season, Matlock has revolved around Madeline (Kathy Bates) working at the law firm of Jacobson & Moore. Matty is hiding how she’s searching for evidence the firm buried documents that would have gotten opioids off the street, saving thousands of lives, including Matty’s daughter.

The penultimate episode had Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) uncovering Matty’s secret. While there was obvious tension about Matty’s deception, Olympia joined Matty in her quest for answers. Matty believed that Olympia’s ex-husband Julian Jr. (Jason Ritter) had hidden the documents with Olympia trying to prove his innocence.

"We Didn't Want to Anticipate Anything": 'Matlock' Star Reveals When the Cast Learned Who Hid the Wellbrexa Documents [Exclusive]
Image
Editor's Note: This article contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Matlock.

At long last, Matlock is providing the answer viewers have been waiting for. Season 1 of CBS's smash-hit reimagining of the Andy Griffith classic has followed Matty Matlock (Kathy Bates), aka Madeline Kingston, as she navigates the ins and outs of Jacobson Moore to find out who within the law firm hid the evidence in a high-profile pharmaceutical case during the opioid epidemic that could've saved her daughter's life. Suspicions have pointed towards Beau Bridges's managing partner, Senior, as the show unfolded, as well as his son Julian (Jason Ritter), who had a mountain of evidence stacking against him by the show's penultimate episode. The finale finally unveils the truth, and according to star Skye P. Marshall, the cast was right there with the audience, trying to piece everything together until the end.

‘Matlock’ Creator Breaks Down That Big Finale Reveal, Teases ‘New Directions’ in Season 2
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Matlock” Season 1, Episode 18.

After a season full of anticipation, “Matlock” finally delivered the answer to the mystery being pursued by Kathy Bates’ Madeline Matlock.

In the Season 1 finale, Matty is forced to show her cards to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), laying out her suspicion of Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian (Jason Ritter), for concealing a study that would’ve taken opioids off the market years earlier. Olympia thinks she’s cleared Julian’s name after not finding a payout in his bank account — which she rejoices about with Matty — but when she finds the Wellbrexa study in his safety deposit box, it’s apparent it was Julian who hid the documents.

While creator Jennie Snyder Urman admitted there were some debates about who could be culpable — Julian or Senior (Beau Bridges) — she and the team knew it had to be Julian.

“We realized that it...

The Matlock Season 1 Finale Reveal Leaves Every Characters’ Fate Hanging in the Balance
Image
There are cliffhangers, and then there is this traumatic mess that Matlock has left us with. All in all, though, that was one hell of an epic ending to the premiere season.

Truth be told, it did not go as I expected at all. I thought it would be like the end of Clue, with Kathy Bates breaking down all her discoveries. However, what we got was so much better.

One thing about Matlock that I pondered was. “How will they keep the story going once the Welbrexa culprit is caught?”

(CBS/Screenshot)

What no one anticipated was that the big reveal would happen in secret, with the culprit’s consequences resting in the hands of someone other than Matty.

Also, let me go ahead and get this out of the way right now: I was dead wrong about what went down with the Welbrexa documents. Well, technically speaking, I was half “dead wrong.

Jason Ritter Explains His "Sort of Painful" Experience With Beau Bridges' 'Matlock' Role
Image
As Season 1 of CBS's Matlock gears up for its supersized finale, Jason Ritter is looking back at his time working alongside three-time Emmy winner Beau Bridges. The veteran actor, known for his roles in The Fabulous Baker Boys and Norma Rae, has been a recurring presence throughout the show's first run as Senior, the cold father to Ritter's Julian, and managing partner at Jacobson Moore, who initially was at the top of Matty's (Kathy Bates) list of suspects who could've hidden the evidence in the Welbrexa case. Senior's relationship with his son hasn't been the most positive on-screen, but according to Ritter, it's about to hit a breaking point to close out the season. For him, it also hits all the harder because of a personal connection to Bridges and how warm the actor is when the cameras are off.

Walton Goggins
Dreamin’ Wild review – Walton Goggins and Casey Affleck are rediscovered 70s rockers in late-life fame drama
Walton Goggins
Goggins and Affleck play Donnie and Joe Emerson, whose album wins acclaim decades after it was made, but it’s rather a mono film

Newcomer-fans of Walton Goggins, sharing gifs of his stunned expression in The White Lotus, might want a look at this interesting but flawed movie: a heartfelt but frustratingly ponderous true-life story from the music world in which Goggins stars with Casey Affleck. Donnie and Joe Emerson were two brothers from Washington State who self-recorded an album in their teen years in 1978 called Dreamin’ Wild; it bombed, leaving crippling debts for their poor dad (played by Beau Bridges), who’d taken out bank loans to build them a log-cabin recording studio – but the record is then rediscovered 30 years later by vinyl hipster connoisseurs who can hardly believe the Emerson boys’ untutored rock genius.

The film insightfully shows how this deferred fame is not all good news; it...

Skye P. Marshall on What Comes Next After That ‘Matlock’ Cliffhanger
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the April 3 episode of Matlock, “The Johnson Case.”]

Nothing in the pilot that launched the CBS hit show Matlock starring Oscar winner Kathy Bates hinted that the friendship between cunning and wily 76-year-old Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a lawyer with a lot of fight still left in her tank, and the partner-tracked, soon-to-be divorcee mother of young twins Olympia Lawrence would become one of the most compelling elements of the show. But that’s exactly where things are as Matlock prepares to wrap its first season. Now, the audience stake in that relationship hit like a boulder as Olympia confronted Matty at the end of the third to last episode.

“So, who the hell are you, Madeline Matlock?” Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) grilled, as Matty stepped off the bus she regularly takes from cushy Jacobson Moore before meeting her driver and sinking into the back of a limo on her way to her mansion — not a cramped apartment in...

Beau Bridges Had To Create General Landry's Backstory For Stargate Sg-1
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Stargate Sg-1."

In the vast, fantastical world of "Stargate Sg-1," few characters are as blunt and no-nonsense as General Hank Landry (Beau Bridges). The commander of the Stargate Command (after Sg-1 leader Jack O' Neill was promoted to major general at the start of season 9), Landry took over matters after the Sg-1 crew had officially disbanded. The Stargate Command has always been a well-oiled machine, with military officers like George S. Hammond (Don S. Davis) doing their utmost to deal with the wayward threats of intergalactic conflict and invasion. Landry continues this tradition in seasons 9 and 10 of the show, bringing with him a sense of humor that goes hand in hand with his penchant for yelling at his officers. Apart from the usual shenanigans involving the Stargate Command, Landry's arc pushes him towards a meaningful relationship with his estranged daughter, Carolyn (Lexa Doig), who happens...

Kathy Bates would be the oldest Emmy winner in her category’s history (and it’s not even close)
Image
If Gold Derby's Emmy odds are correct, then Kathy Bates is on the verge of making history.

The veteran star is currently favored to win Best Drama Actress for the reimagined Matlock. She would be 77 years old when the trophies are handed out Sept. 14, which would make her the oldest woman ever in the category by 15 years.

Glenn Close (Damages) has held the Emmy record since 2009, and before that 2008, when she won back-to-back Best Drama Actress trophies at ages 62 and 61. Prior to Close, the category's oldest winners were 60-year-old Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters in 2007), 58-year-old Barbara Stanwyck (The Big Valley in 1966), 57-year-old Barbara Bel Geddes (Dallas in 1980), 50-year-old Sada Thompson (Family in 1978), and 50-year-old Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder in 2015).

After winning the Critics Choice Award for Matlock, a shocked Bates thanked showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman "for creating such an amazing role for an old lady like me.

For instance, it wasn’t until “Game Face” that I realized all of Matty’s stories about her “dead husband” were actually stories about Bitsy’s ex-husband, Burt.
