One of the most underrated legal comedies of the past two decades is officially heading to Netflix as its new streaming home.

Franklin & Bash is coming to Netflix next month, and fans barely have to wait to start streaming the fan-favorite series on the platform. All four seasons of Franklin & Bash will be available for streaming on Netflix beginning Sept. 1.

Jonathan Kaplan, who directed Jodie Foster to a best actress Oscar in The Accused and received five Emmy nominations for his work as a helmer and producer on ER, has died. He was 77.

Kaplan died Friday at his home in Los Angeles after a battle with liver cancer, his daughter, Molly Kaplan, told The Hollywood Reporter. “He was a loving, supportive father,” she said.

Kaplan, whose parents both worked in show business and whose uncle was Oscar-winning actor Van Heflin, served an apprenticeship with famed B-movie producer Roger Corman and then directed the blaxploitation classic Truck Turner (1974), starring Isaac Hayes, Yaphet Kotto and Nichelle Nichols.

Kaplan also guided Michelle Pfeiffer to a best actress Oscar nomination in the 1960s-set Love Field (1992), and his directing résumé included the Shirley Muldowney biopic Heart Like a Wheel (1983), starring Bonnie Bedelia and Beau Bridges; Bad Girls (1987), the distaff Western starring Madeleine Stowe, Mary Stuart Masterson,...

Justina Machado is headed back to TV with a new role on Matlock!

The 52-year-old actress has been tapped for a major recurring role in the CBS drama’s upcoming second season, according to Deadline.

This will reunite her with Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman, who also heads Matlock, as well as Jane‘s Yael Grobglas, who recurs on the legal series.

The latest update on Matlockseason 2 confirms the return of an unexpected character. The breakout hit legal dramedy ended on a note of uncertainty for Kathy Bates' titular Madeline Matlock. Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) has figured out her secret. But heading into Matlock season 2, which premieres later this year on CBS, Matty may have bigger problems to contend with.

Matty's home life is at a bit of a crossroads, whether that relates to her grandson Alfie or her marriage. There are no immediate answers about how either of those questions will be resolved, but the wait for answers just got a bit shorter.

The official Instagram for Matlock on CBS has shared a cast photo to celebrate that season 2 is now in production. The photo features all the core actors, including Jason Ritter, David Del Rio, Leah Lewis, Sam Anderson, Beau Bridges, and Aaron Harris, who plays Alfie, along with Marshall and Bates.

Matlock star Skye P. Marshall was surprised by country music superstar Dolly Parton, during an interview at Newport Beach TV Fest. A gender-flipped remake of the classic 1980s legal drama, Matlock follows Kathy Bates in the role of Madeline "Matty" Matlock, who joins a prestigious law firm to investigate the death of her daughter.

The show was a success on CBS, and in October 2024, Matlock season 2 was renewed. Marshall plays Olympia Lawrence, a junior partner at Jacobson Moore law firm who is Matty's boss, and who has an initially frosty relationship with her. Marshall has received acclaim for her performance, and is looking forward to starring alongside some big names next season.

When it comes to the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards, Kathy Bates may break a record, and her Matlock castmates have something to say about it. Bates stars as the titular character in the CBS series. At 77 years old, Bates would be the oldest nominee for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series if she snags a nomination for the role.

Emmy voters are currently voting on all of the Emmy submissions. Nominations will be announced after those votes are tallied on July 15. The winners will then be announced during the televised ceremony on September 14.

Mark Brokaw, a prolific director of Off Broadway, Broadway and regional stage productions who beginning in the 1990s worked with some of the brightest emerging playwrights including Douglas Carter Beane, Kenneth Lonergan, Nicky Silver, Paula Vogel and Lynda Barry, died Sunday, June 29, following a battle with cancer. He was 66.

His death was confirmed by the actor Camryn Manheim on social media. “My beautiful friend Mark Brokaw lost his battle with cancer this morning….Today, we lost a beautiful, gifted, beloved friend, artist, husband, and son. The entire theater community is grieving today. I will miss him terribly.”

Raised in Illinois, Brokaw graduated from Yale Drama school and received a fellowship from the Drama League in New York. He soon met Carole Rothman, artistic director of the Second Stage Off Broadway theater, and was hired as her assistant director on Tina Howe’s Costal Disturbances in 1987.

Both were born into performing families; Bridges is the son of Lloyd and brother to Jeff Bridges.
